Open Source AI Editor: First Milestone

June 30th, 2025 by the VS Code Team

Last month we shared our plan to make VS Code an open source AI editor. Today we reached the first milestone: the GitHub Copilot Chat extension is now open source on GitHub under the MIT license.

Why open source?

As we outlined previously, our primary motivation is community-driven innovation and increasing data transparency. We believe AI experiences can thrive by leveraging the vibrant open-source community – just as VS Code has successfully done over the past decade. As AI is becoming an integral part of the modern coding experience, it should be developed openly alongside VS Code itself.

Explore and contribute

Now that the code is open source, what does it mean for you? Explore the codebase and learn how agent mode is implemented, what context is sent to LLMs, and how we engineer our prompts. Everything, from our system prompts, implementation details, to the telemetry we capture, is available in all transparency. In fact, why not use agent mode itself for helping you understand and explore the codebase!

We welcome your feedback and contributions! Feel free to open pull requests and file issues. Note, that we’re tracking issues in the vscode repo, as our long-term goal is to integrate the code from vscode-copilot-chat into the VS Code core codebase.

Have additional questions? Check out our FAQ.

What’s next?

Next, we will carefully refactor the relevant components of the extension into VS Code core. The original GitHub Copilot extension that provides inline completions remains closed source – but in the following months we plan to have that functionality be provided by the open sourced GitHub Copilot Chat extension. Also, we are excited to partner with the open source AI community to make sure our plan covers impactful open source scenarios.

Our core priorities remain intact: delivering great performance, powerful extensibility, and an intuitive, beautiful user interface.

We’re excited to shape the future of development as an open source AI editor, and we hope you’ll join us on this journey to build in the open.

Happy Coding!

Even MAGA Is Pissed Off About Tech Bros’ Dream of Bulldozing Federal Lands to Create New Cities

In recent years, a cadre of tech billionaires have become obsessed with a deeply unconventional idea: the creation of new, privately owned cities. Dubbed the “Freedom Cities” movement, backers say they’d like to create new special development zones in the U.S. that would allow such cities to be built. In these zones, private investors could write their own laws and set up their own governance structures. According to this project’s backers, such communities would be corporately controlled and wouldn’t involve a traditional bureaucracy. Of course, to do all this, developers will need a lot of land.

The “Freedom City” movement found its legislative champion in the form of Mike Lee, a deeply out-of-touch, politically unhinged Senator from Utah. In recent months, Lee introduced a provision to Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” that would have brought tech billionaires’ dream one step closer to reality: Lee’s bill text would have offered up 1.2 million acres of federal land to be sold off by the Bureau of Land Management and then developed for the purposes of “affordable housing” and other private interests. Much of that land, some of which sits adjacent to some of the nation’s most popular national parks, would have been sourced from 11 Western states.

Perhaps aware of how unpopular his proposals were, Lee was attempting to cram through the policy without any sort of public comment. American Progress notes that Lee’s bill required “some consultation with local government, governors, and Tribes” but otherwise offered “no opportunity for public input.”

However, Lee’s effort has officially floundered. Over the weekend, the Senator pulled his provision from the Trump megabill due to ongoing opposition within Congress—including from conservative lawmakers in Western states. Those lawmakers, including Republicans from Montana, Idaho, Washington, California, and Oregon, were planning to torpedo Trump’s whole bill if Lee’s provision remained inside of it. “We cannot accept the sale of federal lands that Sen. Lee seeks,” the legislators wrote in a letter sent last week. Rather than be the reason that Trump’s omnibus legislation floundered, Lee put his tail between his legs and withdrew the provision on Saturday.

“Over the past several weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time listening to members of the community, local leaders and stakeholders across the country,” Lee wrote on X on Saturday. “While there has been a tremendous amount of misinformation — and in some cases, outright lies — about my bill, many people brought forward sincere concerns.”

For the moment, millions of Americans can breath a collective sigh of relief. The National Parks Conservation Association has said that the bill, had it gone through, would have opened up federal lands directly adjacent to national parks for development—a policy that could have resulted in luxury housing or hotels being built right next to iconic vistas like Zion National Park.

Almost nobody wanted this thing to happen. In addition to concerns from Lee’s fellow lawmakers, a recent poll by Colorado College found that, of several thousand people surveyed who live in Western states, a vast majority of them support protections for public lands, and are more interested in conservation efforts than they are in development. Indeed, even Trump voters have come out to decry the proposal. “Strong majorities of Western voters – including self-identified ‘MAGA’ voters – support policies that focus on the protection and conservation of public lands and oppose policies that would open public lands up to drilling, mining, or other development,” the pollsters found.

Viral MAGA influencers—many of whom happen to live in rural communities—had been openly badmouthing Lee’s plan to privatize public lands. Indeed, one Trump-voting hunter and gun rights YouTuber, Cameron Hanes, has been posting long, detailed videos slamming Lee’s bill. “It’s all BS what he says,” Hanes says in one video, claiming that Lee has been spreading “misinformation” about who is criticizing the bill. Hanes notes that it’s “actually both sides of the aisle—it’s left and right” that hate the proposal. Hanes additionally urged his followers to “please call [Congress] and make us impossible to ignore.” He added: “The collective voice of the average American is our only hope.”

It isn’t hard to see why people like Hanes were so critical of Lee’s proposal, as American Progress has noted that “well-loved recreation spots, popular areas for hunting and fishing, prime wildlife habitat, and even sacred or historic sites” could have potentially been privatized under the bill.

Despite aggressive disinterest from a majority of Americans, the lobby to create tech billionaires’ network of libertarian dystopias is still in place, and efforts to deregulate and ultimately develop public lands are still ongoing. That’s concerning, given this is clearly a government that doesn’t care much for the environment. Indeed, the Trump administration recently opened up tens of millions of acres in national forests to potential logging. It just goes to show, you can’t keep a bad idea down (as long as the idea belongs to a billionaire).

Integrating Microsoft Dynamics 365 with Business Applications

Why Integrating Microsoft Dynamics 365 with Other Business Applications is a Game Changer

If you’ve ever worked in a business where sales, finance, operations, and client services each operate in their own siloed systems, you know the frustration. Reports don’t align. Approvals get delayed. Clients have to repeat the same information across different teams. Yet, many still work this way. Why? Because integrating systems sounds like a daunting challenge.

But here’s the truth: integrating Microsoft Dynamics 365 with your existing business applications isn’t just an IT project, it’s a key move that transforms how your organization operates. It eliminates inefficiencies, enhances collaboration, and ensures that your teams have the data they need to make informed decisions in real time. Let’s talk about what’s really at stake, and why companies that embrace integration are setting themselves up for long-term success.

1. Siloed Data Slows Down Service Delivery, Microsoft Dynamic 365 Integration Fixes That

For businesses, delivering a seamless experience often requires coordination between multiple departments—sales, finance, project management, and customer success. But when each team relies on disconnected systems, inefficiencies creep in:

  • The sales team closes a deal, but finance isn’t immediately notified, delaying invoicing
  • Project managers don’t have full visibility into client agreements, leading to scope misalignment
  • Account managers struggle to track ongoing service contracts and renewals

With Microsoft Dynamics 365 integration, your teams get a unified, real-time view of business operations. That means:

  • Sales, project management, and finance teams work with the same up-to-date contract and billing data
  • Client onboarding is streamlined with automated workflows
  • Reporting and forecasting become accurate, helping leaders make strategic decisions faster

Companies that centralize their data see an average 36% increase in operational efficiency. When your entire business operates on synchronized data, service delivery becomes faster, more reliable, and more profitable.

2. Your Clients Expect a Frictionless Experience, Are You Delivering?

Customers don’t care about your internal processes, they just want a smooth, professional experience. But without system integration, issues arise:

  • A client reaches out about a service request, but the account manager doesn’t have access to their history
  • A proposal is sent with outdated pricing because the sales and finance teams aren’t aligned
  • A contract renewal is missed because there’s no automated tracking

Now, imagine the opposite: with a fully integrated Microsoft Dynamics 365 ecosystem, every team has access to the full client journey—from first inquiry to contract renewal. This ensures:

  • Faster response times and proactive client service
  • Accurate billing and transparent contract management
  • Fewer miscommunications between teams, leading to stronger client relationships

86% of buyers are willing to pay more for a better service experience. When your teams have the right data at the right time, you’re not just meeting expectations, you’re exceeding them.

3. Better Data, Smarter Decisions

Businesses rely on data to make informed decisions, whether it’s resource allocation, project profitability, or client retention strategies. But without integration, data is scattered, outdated, or simply inaccessible. With Microsoft Dynamics 365 integration, decision-makers can access real-time insights, answering key questions like:

  • Which clients generate the most recurring revenue?
  • Where are we experiencing project delays, and how can we optimize workflows?
  • Are we hitting financial targets, and if not, where are the gaps?

Additionally, AI-powered analytics within Dynamics 365 can detect trends before they become problems, allowing your business to act proactively rather than reactively. 64% of business leaders say real-time data improves decision-making speed. When your business has instant access to critical data, you gain a competitive edge.

4. Automate the Tedious, Focus on Growth

No company grows by spending time on manual data entry and redundant administrative work. Yet, many businesses still rely on spreadsheets and email chains to manage service contracts, invoices, and project updates. A fully integrated Microsoft Dynamics 365 system eliminates these inefficiencies by automating:

  • Contract approvals and service requests
  • Invoice generation and payment tracking
  • Client communication workflows and follow-ups

Businesses that implement automation see 30% increase in productivity. When repetitive tasks are handled by smart systems, your teams can focus on strategic initiatives that drive revenue and growth.

5. Scale Your Services Without Operational Bottlenecks

Growth in the business landscape isn’t just about acquiring more clients, it’s about scaling operations efficiently. One of the biggest advantages of Microsoft Dynamics 365 integration is that it grows with you. Whether you’re expanding service offerings, entering new markets, or managing a larger client base, an integrated system allows you to:

  • Seamlessly onboard new business units and services
  • Automate complex service workflows as you scale
  • Maintain data consistency across different teams and locations

89% of CIOs say scalable IT systems are critical for long-term success. By integrating your core business applications with Dynamics 365, you’re driving growth.

6. Security and Compliance: A Critical Priority

Businesses often handle sensitive client data, making security and compliance non-negotiable. Microsoft Dynamics 365 offers:

  • Role-based access control to ensure only authorized users access sensitive data
  • Data encryption to protect client information
  • Built-in compliance tools to meet industry regulations

As cyber threats continue to rise, businesses that fail to secure their systems risk reputational damage and legal consequences. Integration isn’t just about efficiency, but protecting your clients and your business.

The Bottom Line: Is It Worth It?

Gone are the days of managing cumbersome manual processes and grappling with disconnected systems that slow down progress. With Microsoft Dynamics 365 integration, businesses can automate routine tasks, eliminate operational bottlenecks, and improve data accuracy, freeing up valuable time and resources for more strategic initiatives.

The result? Smarter decisions, more personalized customer interactions, and stronger client relationships, all of which lead to increased profitability and long-term business scalability.

If your company is still relying on disjointed systems, consider the opportunity cost. How much longer can you afford to maintain inefficiencies and miss out on growth opportunities? The businesses that are embracing integration are reaping significant rewards, and now is the time to ask: Are you ready to be part of that future, or will you continue to fall behind? The choice is yours.

The Silver Lining of a Writer’s Callus: Dedication to Craft

Writers write, right? They spend their days drafting, rewriting, and finalizing and their nights dreaming about perfectly crafted sentences and what’s next. But what writers may not realize is if they go too long without a break, they’ll show signs of their dedication with a writer’s callus.

If you prefer writing outlines and drafts by hand, you may have experienced a writer’s callus before. Also known as nerd bump or writer’s bump, these calluses are caused by repeated use of a writing utensil.

Disclaimer: This is a writing blog and we do not offer professional medical advice. If you’re dealing with writer’s callus or some other condition please consult your doctor for the best course of treatment.

What is a writer’s callus?

According to Healthline, “writer’s callus is an area of accumulated dead skin cells that form as a result of repeated friction against your finger.” If you primarily type rather than use a pen or pencil, this type of callus may not be a problem. However, if you do find yourself writing longform for stretches of time, then this is something to watch for!

Think of a writer’s callus as similar to a blister forming on your foot after wearing new shoes for a while. Your skin isn’t used to the friction and as a protection measure, your body forms a blister. A writer’s callus forms on your hand for the same reason—your body is protecting that part of your hand from damage by forming a bump.

Where can writer’s calluses occur?

Musicians who play stringed instruments often experience calluses on their hands. Guitarists and violinists frequently build calluses where their fingers press against the strings.

If you engage in strength training, you can probably feel the calluses on the soft skin on the underside of your knuckles where you regularly grip your weights.

A writer’s callus can occur on your hand wherever your writing utensil rubs repeatedly. Where the callus appears depends on how you hold your writing utensil. Some people hold their pen or pencil between their index and middle finger while others rest it against their ring finger.

How to prevent a writer’s callus

There are many ways you can work to prevent a writer’s callus before it starts. Here are a few common suggestions to try.

Wear gloves while writing

Lightweight cotton gloves add a layer between your pen and your hand, reducing the friction created from writing. People often wear gloves while raking leaves or lifting weights for this reason, so why not try it for writing as well?

Take short breaks

Short breaks are helpful for many reasons, and one reason is it gives your hands a break. While it’s easy to get into the zone and not want to break the spell, it’s a good idea to take regular breaks to move around, stretch, refill your drink, and then get back to work.

Treat writing like a job

If you don’t yet write full time, try to treat it as if you do. Think about how a day job works—you have regular breaks scheduled throughout the shift, a lunch break, and a quitting time. There’s space between working and not working. There are two full days off each week. Having a schedule for writing (with planned breaks and time off) can also help in preventing calluses from forming.

Set aside your favorite pen

Drastic, I know. Most of us have a favorite writing utensil. Whether it’s a pen we think makes our handwriting look better, or a type of ink that doesn’t smear (I’m talking to you, lefties!), writers are notorious for keeping favorites close. However, switching up the type of pen you’re using to write throughout the day can actually help slow or prevent the form of calluses.  Just something to consider.

Mix it up

If you’re on deadline or have high daily word count goals, then it may be prudent to plan for many writing methods. For example, plan to write freehand for your first block of writing, use speak-to-text software for your second block, typing into a computer for your third block, etc.

I have a writer’s callus, now what?

Once you have a callus, there are a few things you can do to treat it according to the American Academy of Dermatology Association.

  1. Soak in warm water
  2. File with a pumice stone
  3. Moisturize

Keep in mind that your callus has formed because your body is trying to protect the skin underneath it from the pressure of your pen. If you are going to continue writing by hand then you may want to keep the callus until you’re ready to take a longer break.

I say, if you have a writer’s callus then wear it as a badge of honor! It shows that you’re dedicated to your craft.

Commitment to a dream is often the difference between seeing that dream come to fruition, or watching that dream remain dormant. If it takes a few calluses to push your dream into reality, it’s well worth it.

Happy writing, and don’t forget to change up your routine every now and then!
