Digital board game Dune: Imperium is getting the Rise of Ix expansion in July

Earlier this year we got the excellent board game Dune: Imperium in digital form, and it seems it was successful enough that we’re already getting more. “More,” in this case, being a digital adaptation of the formerly meatspace-exclusive Rise of Ix expansion, which broadens the game with six new leaders, new spaces on the board, and new tools in your struggle for Arrakis.

Most notable is a new military asset, Dreadnoughts, which let you cement dominance over your enemies. There are also infiltrators, another route to figure out what and why your opponents are doing whatever they’re doing. Perhaps most exciting is the addition of the long-playing Epic game mode—an all-day affair when you’re playing in person, so perhaps a more approachable addition to a digital version of the game where more people will actually find the time to play it.

here is the code :

public class Player : MonoBehaviour
{
    float moveSpeed = 5;
    public Rigidbody2D rb;
    float jump = 5f;
    bool isGrounded;
    // Start is called before the first frame update
    void Start()
    {
        rb.GetComponent<Rigidbody2D>();
    }
 void Update()
 {
     isGrounded = Physics2D.Raycast(transform.position, Vector2.down, 0.1f);

     float moveHorizontal = Input.GetAxis("Horizontal");
     rb.velocity = new Vector2(moveHorizontal * moveSpeed, rb.velocity.y);

     if (isGrounded && Input.GetButtonDown("Jump"))
     {
         rb.AddForce(Vector2.up * jump, ForceMode2D.Impulse);
     }
 }

VS Code Community Discussions for Extension Authors

October 4, 2022 by Olivia Guzzardo, @OliviaGuzzardo

The true power of VS Code comes from its vast extension ecosystem, which only exists because of our incredible community of extension authors. Whether creating a new language extension to make it possible to program in virtually any language, developing a new theme to help with productivity, or extending the workbench to help with a unique developer workflow, extension authors help millions of people by sharing their creation.

Our goal is, and has always been, to make extension development accessible to everyone. And while we have plenty of documentation for getting started with extension development, sometimes there are questions that documentation just can’t answer. Sometimes, all you need is a friendly hand from someone who has been there, had that question, and figured it out.

Today we’re announcing the official launch of VS Code Community Discussions: a place for extension authors to ask questions, connect with the community, and showcase their work.

A screenshot showing the VS Code Community Discussions landing page

The new GitHub Discussions forum is a place for extension authors to connect with each other and stay up to date on announcements from the VS Code team. We want to be as close to developers as possible, and having a centralized, official community helps to achieve that.

When you visit the Discussions repo, you’ll notice that there are currently 3 categories…

Announcements

This is where you can keep up with all of the latest information for extension authors from the VS Code team. This includes things like recently released features such as “Pre-release extensions” as well as some giveaways we have from time-to-time just for our extension author communities – like free Azure Credits!

Extension Development QnA

Ask your questions related to extension development and help your fellow developers by answering theirs. Questions regarding how to approach a specific problem, looking for more details on certain APIs, and seeking best practices are all great to post here. However, if you find yourself saying “I’ve gone through the documentation, and I am still unable to interact with the VS Code API to achieve the desired functionality…”, then it might be better suited as an issue on the official VS Code repo.

Extension Show and Tell

You’ve put time and effort into creating your extension; here’s your chance to show it off! Share a link to your extension, give the community details about what it does, and get help with promotion. This is also a great place to discover new extensions and connect with developers whose work you appreciate.

Why GitHub Discussions?

While platforms like Slack and Discord are terrific for real time interaction, there is a sacrifice in discoverability. Often, the same questions have already been asked in these places, but they are not easily found with a simple internet search. GitHub Discussions are easily indexed in search results, so the answer to the question that’s been frustrating you all day could be just a quick search away.

We created a new repo to house our GitHub Discussions community, rather than use the existing VS Code repo. People currently go to the VS Code repo to file issues via GitHub Issues, and we saw that the lines would be blurred between GitHub Issues and GitHub Discussions if hosted in the same place. We felt that separating the main repo and the new community was the best way to establish the community as a distinct gathering place.

Join Today!

It is our hope that the VS Code Community Discussions turns into a thriving community, where extension authors can connect with others and show off their hard work.

VS Code is what it is today because of our amazing contributors, and we want to continue to connect with and foster that community. As such, we have several channels where you can engage with us:

  • VS Code Community Discussions for extension author Q&A and announcements, officially maintained by the VS Code team
  • The Extension Authoring section of our monthly VS Code Release Notes where extension authors can learn about newly released APIs
  • VS Code Dev Slack for extension author Q&A, maintained by the community
  • GitHub Issues to file an issue in our VS Code repo
  • Stack Overflow to ask and answer questions tagged with visual-studio-code
  • Twitter for announcements and updates from members of the development team
  • YouTube and TikTok for video content on all things VS Code

Happy Coding!

Beware of These 3+ Scams That Target Freelance Writers

Make piles of money writing from home…even if you don’t have any experience. Yep, hucksters are out there and there are scams that target freelance writers every…single…day.

Have you ever wondered if a freelance-writing opportunity you’re looking at is a scam?

It certainly could be. Scams that target freelance writers are common. Some of these rip-offs are age-old and never seem to go away. New ones are always emerging, too-got a new wrinkle for you in this post.

These scams aren’t all about getting jobs, either. There’s shady activity in PR help for freelance writers, online learning, and more.

Often, freelance writers can be too trusting, as we seek to ply our trade. Sadly, there are plenty of people out there ready to take advantage of our trusting nature for their own gain.

Please don’t get scammed!

In this post, we’re covering three of the most common scams that target freelance writers online

For the full list (Top 10), download this free e-book, where we’ll also send you a Scam Fighting Toolkit.

scams-ebook

1. Writing for free

There are many “opportunities” to write for free online. You’ll get a lot of pitches that your free piece will give you “great exposure.” Most of these offers are a complete waste of your time and energy.

The most common scam is the request to write a free trial article as an audition for a job. Unless you have no clips, you shouldn’t have to do this—prospects can just look at your samples and decide whether to hire you.

All too often, companies fill all their content needs by simply asking many freelance writers to do these “auditions.” These free samples are their whole source of content. They don’t really plan to hire anyone.

If you get asked to write a free sample, ask yourself if it’s worth your time.

A good counter-offer is to write the piece on spec-namely, that if they use the clip you’ll be paid. There’s no justifiable reason why your first piece should be unpaid, if it’s good enough to publish.

2. Pennies for ad-clicks

Somewhat similar to Medium’s formula, you may find sites that offer an “opportunity” to write for what they promise will be pay.

But the pay model is based on how often readers click on the ads next to your posts, or how many views a post gets.

Most of the sites making these offers have little traffic, so no clicks will happen. Also, have you noticed that people generally hate online ads? Real diminishing returns there, in general.

This is a formula that may have worked 15 years ago, but few sites today are good pay-per-click earning opportunities.

There is a legit way to earn based on traffic or ad clicks: That’s with a minimum-pay guarantee, with click or eyeball revenue figured in as a bonus. I earned well writing for Forbes on this formula at one point (sadly, their pay scheme is different now).

Any site that really generates high traffic should be willing to offer you some base pay, since they know you’ll get some traffic. If they won’t pay a flat guaranteed fee in addition to click revenue, I recommend you move on.

3. Pay to play

This is one of the oldest scams out there. It’s so popular that the FTC warns against it.

“Congratulations, your resume shows you are qualified for X contract job! Just pay the $30 application fee and you’ll be hired.” Nope. Total scam.

Legitimate employers don’t ask you to pay to apply or to get hired for their job.

Nuh-uh.

Also, consider this gray area: the websites that promise you unique lists of freelance jobs, if you’ll pay a monthly subscription fee. (Red flag: No samples will be offered, no free trial. No other benefits, just job lists.)

Heads up: Most of those job ads are simply scraped up from the Internet that you could look at yourself, for free. And most of them pay $20 per blog post.

When job listings are worth a fee

A paid jobs list should be unique and high-quality like FlexJobs, which does an impressive job of digging up legit jobs off arcane places you’ll never find on your own.

A time-saving list of high-paying gigs is worth a fee, in my view. Most pay-to-play sites serve up warmed-over junk listings.

Save your money, do your own research—and remember that online job ads are rarely a source of great freelance-writing jobs. That only comes from qualifying and pitching your own prospects, who aren’t sifting through 500 resumes from a mass job ad.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true…it usually is.

It’s your freelance business to run. Be a good steward of your time and resources and do your homework before you jump on any offers, whether they’re for jobs, marketing help, or courses.
Be your own scam-buster!

It’s a great time to be a freelance writer, because there’s a ton of great opportunity out there…but if you waste time falling for scams, it’s hard to earn well. I hope you can use this guide to avoid getting ripped off, so you can spend more time finding great clients.

Detroit police can no longer use facial recognition results as the sole basis for arrests

The Detroit Police Department has to adopt new rules curbing its reliance on facial recognition technology after the city reached a settlement this week with Robert Williams, a Black man who was wrongfully arrested in 2020 due to a false face match. It’s not an all-out ban on the technology, though, and the court’s jurisdiction to enforce the agreement only extends four years. Under the new restrictions, which the is calling the strongest such policies for law enforcement in the country, police cannot make arrests based solely on facial recognition results or conduct a lineup based only on facial recognition leads.

Williams was arrested after facial recognition technology flagged his expired driver’s license photo as a possible match for the identity of an alleged shoplifter, which police then used to construct a photo lineup. He was arrested at his home, in front of his family, which he says “completely upended my life.” Detroit PD is known to have made at least two other wrongful arrests based on the results of facial recognition technology (FRT), and in both cases, the victims were Black, the ACLU noted in its announcement of the settlement. Studies have shown that facial recognition is .

The new rules stipulate that “[a]n FRT lead, combined with a lineup identification, may never be a sufficient basis for seeking an arrest warrant,” according to a summary of the agreement. There must also be “further independent and reliable evidence linking a suspect to a crime.” Police in Detroit will have to undergo training on the technology that addresses the racial bias in its accuracy rates, and all cases going back to 2017 in which facial recognition was used to obtain an arrest warrant will be audited.

In an op-ed for published today, Williams wrote that the agreement means, essentially, that “DPD can no longer substitute facial recognition for basic investigative police work.”

Trepang2 Bladekisser DLC Studies the Blade on July 25

Trepang Studios‘ fast paced F.E.A.R. spiritual successor Trepang2 is getting a new DLC on July 25th.

Titled Bladekisser, this new content drop is part of the Season Pass and it appropriately introduced a very sharp sword to the game, as well as a machinegun and a revolver. New additions to our arsenal are all well and good, but that’s not all, as Bladekisser will also feature two new side missions, nine combat simulator maps, three High Value Targets and new intel for all the lore enthusiasts out there.

For those who don’t own the Trepang2 Season Pass, the DLC will also be sold separately for US$7.99. And if you happen to not even own the base game (you monster!) the current Steam Sale features all editions of Trepang2 for 40% off, which is a pretty tempting deal if you ask me.

Extreme E is now Extreme H, a hydrogen-powered racing series starting 2025

Extreme E, the premium off-road EV racing series, is pivoting to hydrogen. The series announced this week that it’s rebranding to , and unveiled a hydrogen-powered race car it’s calling the Pioneer 25 to usher in the transition. The first season is slated to begin in April 2025 in Saudi Arabia, before heading to the UK, Germany, Italy and wrapping up in the US.

Extreme E , putting electric off-road vehicles to the test of (as you might expect) extreme environments, like the desert. It got some major teams on board, . This year marks Extreme E’s fourth season. In a about the shift to hydrogen, founder and CEO Alejandro Agag said the move is “not just about e-mobility; it’s about creating green power solutions that can be applied anywhere, from remote locations to bustling cities.”

“By launching Extreme H, we’re not only showcasing the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source but also testing the wider hydrogen ecosystem including recharging and hydrogen transportation — as well as helping to create a market for it,” Agag wrote. Pioneer 25, Extreme H’s flagship race car, is powered by a 75kW hydrogen fuel cell.
