Imagine a future where the diurnal cycle, at least in some parts of the world, is adjustable. Where humans are no longer beholden to the 24-hour pattern of daylight and darkness. Instead of being constrained by the physical reality that constrains the sun to its daily cycle, imagine a future where the sun can be turned on and off like a flashlight.

This is the future that Reflect Orbital imagines is possible. The startup is developing satellites that would deploy large mirrors to precisely reflect sunlight onto specific points on the ground. Rings of satellites in sun-synchronous orbit would follow the terminator, or the line that separates night and day, providing additional sunlight before dawn and after dusk.

Their plans generated a lot of ire on the internet. But some of that attention was positive — including from Sequoia investor Shaun Maguire.

Why use a rocket when you could use a giant, miles-long “gun” instead?

That’s the question posed by Longshot Space, a company that’s completely rethinking how to send mass to orbit. The company is developing a kinetic launch system that will gradually accelerate payloads to hypersonic speeds before launching them into orbit. While Longshot’s full-scale system will take up a lot of space, the startup is betting it can achieve very, very low costs to orbit compared to a rocket — as low as $10 per kilogram, which is a staggering reduction compared to the $6,000 per kilogram price of a rideshare on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The company raised a $1.5 million pre-seed round in April 2023; now, nearly 18 months later, Longshot closed a little over $5 million in combined venture funding and non-dilutive funding from the U.S. Air Force’s TACFI program. The new capital will be used to build a massive, 500-meter-long gun in the Nevada desert to push 100-kilogram payloads to Mach 5.

This week in space history

This week we’re celebrating two major achievements in space history: the birth of NASA and the launch of Sputnik-1. Both events have changed the course of space exploration — the former, by establishing the organization that would help ensure America’s place as the world’s primary space power; and the latter, by arguably kicking off the Cold War-era space race between the USA and the USSR.

Notably, the Russians launched Sputnik on October 4, 1957, and less than a year later Congress officially established NASA. America was shocked by the USSR’s success in the space domain. President Eisenhower tried to save face, calling the satellite a “useless hunk of iron.” But he also dedicated even more funding for the domestic space program to ensure we caught up.

Here’s NASA: “Immediately after the Sputnik I launch in October, the U.S. Defense Department responded to the political furor by approving funding for another U.S. satellite project. As a simultaneous alternative to Vanguard, Wernher von Braun and his Army Redstone Arsenal team began work on the Explorer project. … The Sputnik launch also led directly to the creation of National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The Forever Winter Direct Download:

Scavenge and fight for your next day alive under the shadow of gargantuan war machines. Enemies in the game can literally tower over the battlefield. To put it another way The battlefield is unpredictable thanks to The Forever Winter’s Dynamic Encounter system: enemies have their own goals and agendas, operating in coordinated groups, undertaking full-scale battles — and they’ll intelligently react to your actions. The battlefield you leave won’t be the same one you return to. Use your wits, stealth, and skilled gunplay to make it out alive. Choose your path in the shadow of the two great superpowers, loot the dead, and make it out alive. While the warring factions may ignore you at first, the more disruptive you become to their goals, the more they’ll seek to remove you from the equation. Iron Meat

Ecological collapse compounded by runaway technological advancement brought us here: a world choked by 40 years of industrial-scale violence between two military superpowers, unmerciful mass killing by AI automata, human-machine hybrids, and the bleak truth of human nature. There’s two sides to this war, and you’re not on either. Collision needs work. The first map has a couple areas where walking over the smallest rocks suddenly locks you in place and given how often enemies patrol that’s pretty much a death sentence if you can’t spam jump/crouch out in time. Turning is limited. You can’t sprint-strafe like in Helldivers 2 so that took some getting use to. My character feels more like a truck than a human and as such I feel like I am driving my character more than having them sprint.

Raspberry Pi built an AI camera with Sony

AI enthusiasts who like the Raspberry Pi range of products can rejoice, as the company is now announcing its new Raspberry Pi . This product is the result of the company’s collaboration with (SSS), which began in 2023. The AI Camera is compatible with all of Raspberry Pi’s single-board computers.

The approximately 12.3-megapixel AI Camera is intended for vision-based AI projects, and it’s based on SSS’ IMX500 image sensor. The integrated RP2040 microcontroller manages the neural network firmware, allowing the camera to perform onboard AI image processing and freeing up the Raspberry Pi for other processes. Thus, users who want to integrate AI into their Raspberry Pi projects are no longer limited to the Raspberry Pi AI Kit.

The AI Camera isn’t a total replacement for Raspberry Pi’s , which is still available. For those interested in the new AI Camera, it’s available right now from Raspberry Pi’s approved resellers for $70.

Effortless Instrumentation profiling with Persistent Target Selection

Ever wished to assess your code’s performance without repeatedly choosing the target process or executable for each instrumentation profiling session? If so, you’re among many developers who find this task cumbersome and prone to errors, especially when profiling the same target repeatedly.

We understand your frustration and have a solution: Visual Studio 2022 introduces a new feature that addresses this issue. The instrumentation tool now remembers your target selection across runs, providing a seamless experience and enhancing the continuity of your profiling sessions.

Image of a speedometer

With this improvement, you can maintain your specified target across multiple instrumentation runs, eliminating the need for repetitive selection tasks. This means you can focus more on analyzing the performance data and optimizing your code, rather than wasting time and effort on setting up the profiling session.

How does it work?

To use this feature, you need to have Visual Studio installed and the Performance Profiler (ALT+F2) enabled. Then, follow these simple steps:

  1. Launch the Performance Profiler and select Instrumentation as the profiling method.
  2. Click the Target button and choose the process or executable you want to profile.
  3. Click Start to begin the profiling session. Visual Studio will collect and display the performance data in the Diagnostic Tools window.
  4. When you’re done, click Stop to end the profiling session. Visual Studio will show you a summary of the results and allow you to drill down into the details.
  5. Click cancel in the dialog box to reset the persisted selection.

If you want to run another instrumentation profiling session on the same target, you don’t need to select it again. Just click Start and Visual Studio will remember your last choice and use it as the default target. When you add a new method, class, or project, these new targets are automatically selected based on whether their parent was previously selected. This proactive approach ensures that no new additions are missed and helps maintain comprehensive profiling coverage.
You can still change the target if you want to, but you don’t have to.

Image showing items to instrument in Visual Studio

Enjoy the convenience and efficiency of persistent target selection!

Why should you use it?

This feature is designed to help you streamline your workflow and improve your productivity when using the instrumentation tool. By persisting the target selection between runs, you can:

Save time and avoid frustration by reducing the number of clicks and interactions needed to set up a profiling session.

Minimize the risk of selecting the wrong target or forgetting to select one, which could lead to inaccurate or missing performance data.

Maintain consistency and comparability of the performance data across multiple profiling sessions on the same target.

Focus more on the performance analysis and optimization of your code, rather than the configuration and management of the profiling session.

Concluding thoughts

We hope you find this feature valuable for your development journey. Your feedback and suggestions are invaluable to us as we strive to enhance it further. Please share your thoughts through the Visual Studio Developer Community or the Report a Problem tool in Visual Studio.

Thank you for choosing Visual Studio and for your continuous feedback that helps us make it better every day.

Microsoft to face higher competition scrutiny in Germany, including over its use of AI

Microsoft has joined an exclusive club of tech giants that are subject to a special abuse control regime in Germany. The country’s Federal Cartel Office (FCO) confirmed on Monday that the software giant could face restrictions if the competition authority deems an intervention is necessary.

The designation, which lasts for five years, is important, as it lets the German authority take a close interest in how Microsoft wields its influence through its activities around generative AI.

However, the regulator said it has yet to take any decisions on “possible proceedings.”

In recent years, Microsoft’s influence on OpenAI has landed the pair on antitrust regulators’ radars. The cozy relationship even saw Microsoft briefly hire OpenAI front-man Sam Altman and other key staffers last fall during a board dispute.

Although Altman ended up staying at OpenAI, the episode underscored the closeness between the two companies, and Microsoft even got a board observer seat at OpenAI (it gave it up this summer). However, careful structuring of their arrangement appears to have kept it flying for now.

The FCO has already looked at the two companies’ partnership, and it found last November that their relationship did not meet the threshold for a traditional merger review. However, now that the regulator is armed with more proactive and wide-ranging powers to regulate Big Tech, Microsoft’s dealings with OpenAI could face closer scrutiny in Germany going forward.

The FCO’s press release highlights how Microsoft’s Copilot AI assistant is used “in many parts” of its ecosystem. It also links the company’s strength in cloud computing to helping it enter partnerships with “highly innovative suppliers,” as it can “offer their AI models as services on Azure and integrate them into its own products.”

Commenting in a statement, Andreas Mundt, president of the FCO, also highlighted Microsoft’s long history of software dominance, adding: “Today, Microsoft’s ecosystem is stronger and more closely interconnected than ever before, because overarching all of its activities is the increasing use of the cloud and AI, key technologies in which Microsoft has consolidated its strong position by developing its own products and entering into cooperations.

The FCO began investigating whether the tech giant’s market power met the bar for the special abuse controls regime back in March 2023. And this confirmation that the company has “paramount significance for competition across markets” unlocks a range of powers contained in the 2021 update to Germany’s antitrust rulebook. The reform aims to counteract concerns that Big Tech’s market power is hampering rivals’ ability to innovate and compete.

The German law already applies to Amazon, Apple, Google and Meta, and predates the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), a similar ex-ante competition reform that is also being used to clip Big Tech’s wings.

However, the DMA applies operational controls only to named platforms, while the FCO has designated Microsoft as a whole. This means the German authority has greater freedom to impose controls on Microsoft’s activities, including around AI, if it judges the company’s actions are crimping competition.

The EU’s DMA was drafted before the boom in generative AI tools made ChatGPT a household name. Microsoft is designated as a gatekeeper, but only two of its platforms are directly regulated: the Windows operating system and its social network LinkedIn. That limits the European Commission’s ability to intervene in Microsoft’s activities in AI unless they specifically fall within these two “core platform services.”

“Our decision applies to Microsoft as a whole, not only to individual services or products,” Mundt emphasized. “Based on our decision, we can stop anti-competitive practices which are not covered by the DMA.”

Microsoft spokeswoman Sophie Thomas said in an emailed statement: “We recognize our responsibility to support a healthy competitive environment and we will strive to be proactive, collaborative and responsible in working with the Bundeskartellamt [FCO]. Microsoft is partnering with Germany’s most innovative companies, and we’re committed to investing in the growth of its digital economy.”

Overwatch 2 players are banging their heads against a wall after finding out that Blizzard fumbled a Netflix adaptation

One, if not the, best parts of Overwatch has always been its animated shorts, whether that be for a hero release or even the rare story update. But fans have never been able to enjoy more than a fraction of its potential, and now we know why.

During an AMA with Jason Schreier in the run-up to his upcoming book Play Nice: The Rise, Fall, and Future of Blizzard Entertainment, one curious player asked the question many of us have been wondering about for a long time now: “Any insights into why Blizzard hasn’t branched out into Movies/TV/animation?”

Amazon Discounts Region-Free Copies Of The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom

If you haven’t picked up a copy of The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, you now have more places to buy it from. The brand-new Switch exclusive wasn’t available to preorder at Walmart or Amazon, but it’s finally available at both retailers. Walmart has Echoes of Wisdom online and in stores. Amazon’s listing(s), meanwhile, are for imported, region-free editions. At the moment, the online retailer doesn’t stock Nintendo’s releases in North America. But Amazon has made the prospect of buying an imported game, in this case from its official UK Global Store, a bit more enticing by offering a 10% discount on Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Echoes of Wisdom is a pivotal entry in the beloved Nintendo franchise. For the first time in the franchise’s nearly 40-year history, the namesake steps. into the leading role. Well, it’s not technically the first time Zelda has been playable, but Nintendo would probably want fans to forget Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and Zelda’s Adventure, two infamous Philips CD-i games, exist at all.

Thankfully, Echoes of Wisdom is a triumph, an inventive combination of modern and classic Zelda formulas. The sprawling top-down adventure features traditional dungeons of old while giving players the freedom to approach puzzles in many different ways. For more on how Zelda’s debut adventure succeeds, check out our 9/10 The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Echoes of Wisdom is the fifth(!) mainline Zelda game to receive a physical release on Switch, and you can save big on a few of Link’s adventures, too.

Numerous The Legend of Zelda Amiibo figures are back in stock for retail price at major retailers. In Echoes of Wisdom, you can use Amiibo to get extra crafting materials. You can also unlock three outfits for Zelda. These outfits are available in the game, so you won’t miss out by not having any figures to scan, but you’ll get an alternate version of the three outfits with select Amiibo. Here’s a list of the Amiibo available for retail price that will unlock these optional variants:

visual studio – How do I attach a debugger to a compiled .exe file/running process?

I am a new CS student looking to learn more about how computers work. I have some programming experience, but haven’t really used a debugger in the context of coding (I have used them for ROM hacking NES games).

There is a mod for the game “Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora” that enables disk caching. In the comments, someone asked “Any reason why it’s CreateFileW instead of CreateFileA?” and the author responded “Because that is what AOFP uses to access files. Just attach some debugger or anything that can track stack frame. That will explains all.” I would like to learn how to do exactly that.

I read a tutorial on how to attach Visual Studio’s debugger to a running process, but I am not seeing anything remotely resembling “CreateFileW” or any other functions in the view that VS provides, and after hours of poking around the interface and searching Google, I am still no closer to understanding what I need to do or what to search for. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I tried attaching Visual Studio 2022’s debugger to the process and reading the output. Unfortunately, I’m not seeing anything relevant to “CreateFileW”. I would imagine there should be some way to view the code, but I am not very familiar with VS’s interface and there are hundreds of menus to go through.

4 Eye Care Tips for Gamers

A female gamer with headphones on behind a computer screen.

As a gamer, it is quite common to experience feelings of physical unease or suffer mild pain after playing favorite video games for long hours. Nevertheless, it is important not to ignore these signs and symptoms too long because some of them can lead to severe health problems.

This is especially crucial for symptoms related to your eyes and vision. According to The American Optometrist Association (AOA), gamers experience various eye-related symptoms due to gaming for more than eight hours a day.

This includes eye strain, headaches, dry eyes, and blurred vision. Concerningly, the AOA finds that there are more than 227 million Americans who consider themselves gamers. Less than half of these (46%) visit a healthcare professional for a yearly comprehensive eye exam.

As a result, many eye and vision-related concerns are left unmanaged and lead to severe vision and health issues later on. Whether you’re a professional gamer, a Twitch streamer, or only play games casually, eye health experts recommend seeing a doctor of optometry at least once a year to stay on top of your vision and eye health. While it’s important to trust professionals, there are also healthy gaming and screen time habits you can and should adopt to boost eye care.

Below, we’ll be sharing four eye care tips for gamers:

Wear blue light glasses

Often called gamer glasses or computer glasses, blue light glasses help filter out blue light emitted from your screens. This applies whether you like to game on a smartphone or tablet, as well as laptops and computer monitors. Blue light is known to negatively affect melatonin production, which explains why looking at screens close to bedtime can make you sleep and wake up more poorly than normal. Fortunately, wearing blue light glasses helps mitigate this effect by shielding your eyes from both UV and blue light. Online retailer Clearly’s range of blue light glasses features comfortable flat frames like the Coach for added comfort when wearing headphones. Blue light glasses are also a great choice for UV protection outdoors if you don’t feel like wearing shades.

Aside from wearing blue light glasses, you should consider using dark mode on your digital devices. Nowadays, most software and apps like Clipchamp provide a dark or night mode for more visual comfort and reduced eye strain. While this may not be an option in games, you can also play with brightness and contrast settings so your games aren’t too bright or straining for your eyes.

Take Frequent Breaks

Another eye health tip for gamers is to take frequent breaks. It can be easy to lose track of time when trying to reach the highest levels and ranks of your favorite games. However, studies have shown that gamers demonstrate much less frequency of blinking than normal computer users. This may be because grinding your games requires utmost focus and concentration. Unfortunately, this lack of blinking can cause dry eyes, irritation, and itchy eyes, which can be an unpleasant mix of discomfort and pain.

Optometrists suggest that you should take breaks between your gaming sessions to give your eyes a chance to rest and blink which helps in putting some moisture back into them. Alternatively, there is something called the 20-20-20 rule; take a 20-second break every 20 minutes by looking at something 20 feet away.

Invest in Ergonomic Furniture

Besides lighting and eye breaks, you should mind the ergonomics of your gaming setup. When gaming or even generally using your computer or devices, having ergonomic gaming furniture such as chairs or desks helps you to be at a perfect viewing distance. This in turn avoids cases whereby you have to squint or crane your neck because one is too close to the screen hence making it hard to see in game objects or enemies for instance on gaming monitors. Some of the best brands on the market include SecretLab and Herman Miller if you’re looking for a high-quality gaming chair.

And really should consider getting one, as a study on the negative physical effects of long-term gaming emphasizes the importance of ergonomic equipment in helping reduce the risk of digital eye strain and digital visual fatigue. The study is also a stark reminder that, in addition to eye health, long gaming hours without breaks can lead to other physical symptoms like wrist and hand pain, back problems, neck pain, and reduced spine mobility.

Stay Hydrated While Gaming

Finally, it’s important to keep yourself hydrated while gaming. This not only helps keep you alert and energized but also helps keep your eyes lubricated through your tears. This is necessary to keep your eyes moist, remove bacteria, and remove dust particles that can get in the eyes while you’re gaming. When you’re dehydrated, the body doesn’t produce enough water to keep your eyes hydrated and moist, leading to dry eyes, red eyes, itchiness, and irritation.

To help keep you hydrated through long gaming sessions, you may want to consider keeping a clear water bottle over ones with solid colors or designs. A clear or translucent bottle can easily indicate how much water you are or aren’t drinking throughout your gaming grind and can be a visual reminder if you keep it close by or on your gaming desk. Alternatively, you can opt for the HidrateSpark smart water bottle that tracks how much water you drink and glows to signal if you haven’t had enough. You can also keep a cup or glass nearby to reinforce your hydration habit and keep your eyes healthy in the long run.

You Got a Freelance Writing Assignment! Now What?

You’ve spent hours crafting the perfect article pitch letter—and it landed you a freelance writing assignment! Congratulations.

Here are five basic steps to take your freelance writing assignment through to successful completion.

Now you’ve got to deliver the goods. What do you do next?

Get specifics

You received a “yes” from the editor. That means they like what you’ve done so far, and they want more.

Don’t be afraid to ask for specifics. How many words does the editor want? What angle does the editor want you to take? Was there something specific in your pitch they want you to focus on? Anything in the pitch they want to know more about?

You’re a writer, not a mind reader. Your editor would rather answer questions before you get started then request a ton of rewrites after you turn your article in.

Be sure to verify the deadline, too. You’ll want to turn your work in on time.

Sign a contract

As soon as you see the “yes,” get a contract—that’s the surefire way to make sure you’ll get paid.

Ask about the terms, negotiate if you need to, and get it in writing.

Find out whether you’ll be paid on acceptance or on publication and if you need to submit an invoice.

Don’t forget to ask about the “kill fee.” That’s the amount you’d get paid if you do all the work, turn in the assignment, and they decide not to use it.

Remember, editors expect professional writers to ask about contract terms. You’re a pro. Ask.

A man celebrating his first freelance writing assignment. He is sitting at a laptop and holding paper in both hands.

Get to work

Once you know what the editor wants, you can get started. Find your sources. Complete the interviews. Do any additional research you might need, such as finding a recent study or statistic.

Then, write the piece.

Give yourself time to write it, review it, and rewrite it. Check your spelling and grammar. Send it in. Include your invoice so your editor can get the payment process started.

Rewrite as requested

If the editor asks for rewrites, be sure to clarify what they want. Once you know how to proceed, write your revisions and turn them in.

Keep marketing

While you wait to see your byline in print, you can send more pitch letters to new editors. You can also ask the editor you just wrote for whether or not she has any other stories you could write for her publication. Or just send her a new story idea.

It’s a good idea to always be marketing yourself and your writing. Congratulations, again—and good work!
