New Apple Studio Display and Studio Display XDR Don’t Work With Intel Macs

If you still have a Mac with an Intel chip inside, you’re not going to want to pick up one of the new Studio Display or Studio Display XDR models.

According to Apple’s list of compatible Macs, neither model will work with an Intel-based Mac. Apple says that the Studio Display is compatible with a long list of Macs dating back to 2020, but they all have M-series chips inside.

Apple started phasing out Intel Macs in 2020 when it released the first devices with Apple silicon. Intel chips were phased out in the ‌MacBook Air‌ in 2020 and ‌MacBook Pro‌ line in 2021, and other Macs followed. The last Intel Mac was the ‌Mac Pro‌, and the Intel version was discontinued in 2023. Apple hasn’t sold an Intel Mac for close to three years.

With Intel Macs long discontinued, Apple is phasing out support as well. macOS Tahoe will be the final software update for Intel-based Macs, and Intel Macs will not get macOS 27. While Intel Macs will not be updated past ‌macOS Tahoe‌, Apple plans to provide security updates for three additional years.

The new Studio Display and Studio Display XDR will be available for pre-order on March 4 at 9:15 a.m. Eastern Time.

Apple’s Low-Cost Colorful MacBook: All the Rumors

Apple has been developing a more affordable version of the MacBook, and it’s rumored to be launching in under two weeks. This is going to be one of Apple’s most unique Macs, because there hasn’t really been anything quite like it before.

We’ve rounded up everything we know about the low-cost MacBook ahead of its March debut.

Design

Rumors about the MacBook’s design make it sound a lot like the MacBook Air. It will have an aluminum chassis in various colors, and a 12.9-inch or 13-inch display, depending on the rumor.

It’s possible the low-cost MacBook will have a thin and light design because it’s going to use a lower power A-series chip that doesn’t require a lot of heat dissipation, but that’s not yet confirmed. Apple used to have a 12-inch MacBook with a thin design and a low-power Core M chip, and it’s been suggested that this new MacBook could be something of a revival of that machine.

Thinner and lighter typically means more expensive with Apple products, so a super slim design might not be what Apple is optimizing for. Making the low-cost MacBook thinner than the ‌MacBook Air‌ could just confuse the MacBook lineup.

With the low-cost iPad, Apple keeps the price down by using older display technology that’s not as thin, so we could see that same strategy with the low-cost MacBook. A thicker chassis and a super efficient chip could mean a long battery life, which would be ideal for an educational environment.

Colors

The MacBook is going to come in a selection of fun colors, and Apple has tested light yellow, light green, blue, pink, silver, and dark gray, according to Bloomberg. Not all of those colors are likely to ship, but it sounds like we’ll get at least four of them.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo thinks the MacBook will come in yellow, silver, blue, and pink, which would be the same colors that Apple offers for the ‌iPad‌.

A-Series Chip

The most consistent rumor we’ve heard about the MacBook is its planned chip. Rather than an M-series Mac chip, Apple is planning to use an A-series chip. The low-cost MacBook is expected to use the A18 Pro chip, which Apple first debuted in the iPhone 16 Pro.

The A18 Pro uses a second-generation 3-nanometer process. It has a 6-core CPU with four performance cores and two efficiency cores, along with a 6-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine for AI-based tasks. In Geekbench benchmarks, the A18 Pro has an average single-core score of 3451, and a multi-core score of 8572. For comparison, the M4 iPad Pro earns a single-core score of 3694 and a multi-core score of 13732 (Apple’s next ‌MacBook Air‌ is going to use the M4 chip).

The A18 Pro outperforms the M1, which is the chip that Apple kept around in a lower-cost version of the ‌MacBook Air‌ for several years. An A18 MacBook wouldn’t be too far off from the M4 Mac/‌iPad‌ chips in terms of single-core performance, but there would be a difference in multi-core performance.

A MacBook with the A18 chip would be more than powerful enough for day-to-day use like web browsing, document creation, watching videos, and even light photo and video editing. It won’t be ideal for system-intensive games or tasks like 4K video editing and 3D rendering, but it will do almost everything an iPhone or ‌iPad‌ can do.

Apple is developing the low-cost MacBook with students in mind, and it sounds like it will be the Apple equivalent of the affordable Chromebook PCs that are often used by students.

RAM

Macs start with 16GB RAM, but the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro has 8GB RAM, the minimum for Apple Intelligence. We can expect an A18 Pro MacBook to have at least 8GB RAM so it can support ‌Apple Intelligence‌, but it’s possible Apple will give it the 16GB that all Macs have.

Storage

The ‌MacBook Air‌ starts with 256GB of storage, but Apple could possibly launch the low-cost MacBook with 128GB.

Ports

The A18 Pro chip in the ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro models doesn’t support Thunderbolt, so the MacBook will be limited to USB-C (10GB/s) and won’t offer Thunderbolt speeds. That will limit display connectivity, so it’s likely the A18 Pro MacBook will only support a single external display.

Naming

It’s not really clear what Apple will name the low-cost Mac notebook. We have the ‌MacBook Air‌ and the MacBook Pro, so it’s entirely possible it will be called “MacBook.” Apple has used the MacBook name multiple times in the past, and it’s not in use at the moment.

Price

Pricing on the ‌MacBook Air‌ starts at $999, and the low-cost MacBook is expected to be priced much lower.

Apple probably won’t want to undercut its ‌iPad‌ pricing by too much. The low-cost ‌iPad‌ with A16 chip starts at $349, and the iPad Air with M2 chip starts at $599. A price between $599 and $799 could make the most sense because it wouldn’t be as expensive as the ‌MacBook Air‌ or ‌iPad Pro‌, but would come in at or just over the ‌iPad Air‌’s cost.

$599 would be on par with some of the highly rated Chromebook options that people often purchase for school use, while a $699 or $799 price would be in the same general pricing area, but a little more of a premium price tag. $599 is also the cost of the iPhone 16e, Apple’s most affordable ‌iPhone‌ that uses a slightly less powerful A18 chip.

Launch Date

Rumors suggest that the low-cost MacBook will be introduced at or just before Apple’s March 4 Special Experience that’s taking place in New York, London, and Shanghai. Apple could announce the MacBook in a press release ahead of the experience.

Select members of the media have been invited to the mini event, and it’s likely to provide them with a chance to try the new MacBook and other new devices.

MacBook Pro Buyers Now Facing Up to a Two-Month Wait Ahead of New Models

MacBook Pro availability is tightening on Apple’s online store, with select configurations facing up to a two-month delivery timeframe in the United States.

A few 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro configurations with an M4 Pro chip are not facing any shipping delay, but estimated delivery dates for many configurations with an M4 Max chip range from February 6 to February 24 or even later. At the extreme end, all built-to-order 14-inch MacBook Pro configurations with a 16-core M4 Max chip and 128GB of RAM are estimated to be delivered as late as March 17 on Apple’s online store.

The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro was updated with an M5 chip in October, but the wait continues for MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. There were already some signs that might point towards Apple announcing those models as early as this week, and perhaps the extended delivery timeframes further hint at an imminent refresh. However, ongoing RAM supply constraints could also be contributing to the shipping delays.

Apple unveiled MacBook Pro models with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips in January 2023, so there is precedent for a MacBook Pro refresh in January. Apple’s Creator Studio bundle of creative apps launches on Wednesday, January 28, and the company will be holding its next quarterly earnings call on Thursday, January 29.

Generate Apple Music Playlists With ChatGPT

Apple Music is now available as an extension within ChatGPT, meaning you can search for songs, create playlists, and discover new music through OpenAI’s chatbot. Here’s how to set it up and what makes it worth using.

What You Can Do With Apple Music in ChatGPT

ChatGPT’s integration with Apple Music has the potential to change how you discover new music by letting you describe what you’re looking for in natural language. Instead of typing specific search terms like you would in Apple Music, you can ask the chatbot for “upbeat 80s songs for a road trip” or “calm instrumental music for studying,” and ChatGPT will understand the context and mood you’re after.

You can even combine multiple criteria, like “jazz fusion tracks under five minutes with prominent saxophone,” and ChatGPT will accurately unearth what you’re looking for in ways that standard keyword searches simply aren’t capable of achieving.

You can request custom playlists based on specific criteria, ask for song recommendations, or explore music by decade, genre, or artist. And once ChatGPT creates a playlist, you can preview each track, and save the playlist directly to your Apple Music library with the option “Create Playlist in Apple Music.” You can also save individual tracks using the + buttons.

The Apple Music extension requires a ChatGPT account and works with both free and paid ChatGPT tiers. You don’t need an Apple Music subscription to search the catalog, generate playlists, or listen to 30-second preview clips, but you will need an active subscription if you want to save content to your library.

How to Connect Apple Music to ChatGPT

Before you can start discovering new music with the help of AI, you’ll need to connect Apple’s streaming service using ChatGPT’s extension. You only need to do it once.

Open the ChatGPT app and tap your profile in the sidebar.
Under “Account” settings, tap Apps.
Tap Browse Apps, then choose Apple Music in the extensions library.
Tap Connect, then choose Connect Apple Music.
Follow the on-screen prompts to sign into your Apple Account and permit the access request.

If you’re on desktop, you can perform the same steps in the ChatGPT app for Mac. Alternatively, go to https://chatgpt.com/apps in a browser and open the Apps section in ChatGPT – you’ll find the Apple Music extension there. Once connected, the extension remains active across your devices signed into the same ChatGPT account.

ChatGPT can search Apple Music’s catalog and create playlists, but it can’t access your listening history or existing playlists. The integration only has permission to add songs to your library, so your personal data stays private.

Apple’s 2026 Low-Cost A18 MacBook Pro: What We Know So Far

Apple is planning to release a low-cost MacBook in 2026, which will apparently compete with more affordable Chromebooks and Windows PCs. Apple’s most affordable Mac right now is the $999 MacBook Air, and the upcoming low-cost MacBook is expected to be cheaper. Here’s what we know about the low-cost MacBook so far.

Size

Rumors suggest the low-cost MacBook will have a display that’s around 13 inches in size. The ‌MacBook Air‌ has a 13.6-inch display, so the more affordable MacBook will likely be slightly smaller. It’s sounding like it won’t be too far off from the 13-inch ‌MacBook Air‌, though.

There are no details on how thick it might be, but Apple probably won’t prioritize a thin design for a machine optimized for a low price, even though some people are hoping that it will also be ultra thin. Ultra thin usually means more engineering work and higher-cost components for the display and other parts, but it can also sometimes be achieved by removing features. A thinner enclosure isn’t entirely out of the question if Apple cuts features to reduce costs, but at the same time, reducing size leads to lower battery life, and Apple probably wants to have decent battery to compete with or outmatch cheap Windows laptops.

Since the ‌MacBook Air‌ can run fine with an M-series chip and no fan in an enclosure that’s 0.44 inches thick, there’s no real reason for the MacBook to be any thicker than that, unless Apple wants to add a bigger battery.

Design and Display

The low-cost MacBook will have a standard LCD display with no mini-LED technology or ProMotion refresh rate. It won’t be able to compete with higher-end laptops in terms of brightness or HDR support. It’s probably best to think of it like the low-cost iPad, which offer excellent performance but uses much older display technology.

Apple could make the low-cost MacBook in bright colors like the iMac to appeal to children and to clearly position it as a lower-cost device. There are no rumors of this, but it would also make some sense for Apple to return to the plastic casing of some of its original MacBook models.

Rumors suggest the low-cost MacBook Pro could come in colors like silver, blue, pink, and yellow.

A-Series Chip

Apple is planning to use its A18 Pro chip in the MacBook, which is a chip that was first used in the iPhone 16 Pro. The A18 Pro is built on Apple’s second-generation 3-nanometer process, featuring 8GB RAM and support for Apple Intelligence.

It’s fast and efficient, and more than capable of handling day-to-day tasks. In Geekbench 6 benchmarks, the A18 Pro offers single-core CPU performance scores at the level of the M3 Ultra, and multi-core performance scores higher than the M1 chip that Apple used in the first Apple silicon ‌MacBook Air‌. Metal scores that measure GPU performance are also similar to the ‌M1‌ chip Metal scores.

The A18 Pro will be equivalent to the ‌M1‌ for some tasks, and faster for other tasks. Apple no longer sells the ‌M1‌ ‌MacBook Air‌ from its own store, but it has offered the machine through Walmart at a $599 price point.

Capabilities

With the A18 Pro chip, the low-cost MacBook would be able to do anything that can be done on an ‌iPhone 16‌ Pro. It would be a suitable replacement for the low-cost ‌iPad‌ paired with a keyboard, and it would also support ‌Apple Intelligence‌ features.

As of now, an ‌iPad‌ is essentially the only option for a low-cost portable device that can serve as a computer, but the low-cost MacBook will add a solution that runs macOS instead of iPadOS.

Tasks like browsing the web, watching videos, creating documents, editing photos, and even light video editing would be no problem. A low-cost MacBook with A18 Pro chip could play all of Apple’s ‌iPad‌ and iPhone games, including Apple Arcade titles, but it would not work well with high-end system intensive games.

It would also likely run apps like Final Cut Pro, but speeds for things like exporting video would not be as quick as with a more powerful Mac.

Apple probably won’t go all out on ports, and the MacBook is likely to get just a single USB-C port, though two like the ‌MacBook Air‌ is also possible.

The A18 Pro chip is efficient, and there’s a lot of space inside a 13-inch enclosure for a battery, so we could be looking at MacBook Air-level battery life or better. The ‌MacBook Air‌’s battery lasts for up to 18 hours when watching videos, or 15 hours when browsing the web.

Price

There are no specific details on price as of yet, but Bloomberg claims it will cost “well under $1,000.” The ‌MacBook Air‌ is priced starting at $999, so the MacBook will need to be priced lower than that.

Apple has a 13-inch iPad Air that has a display in the same range rumored for the low-cost MacBook, and it’s priced at $799. The ‌iPad Air‌ has a higher-end M-series processor though, so the low-cost MacBook could be priced below the ‌iPad Air‌.

The closest ‌iPad‌ approximation for the chip is the iPad mini, which has an A17 Pro and is priced at $499. A price somewhere between $499 and $799 could make sense looking at Apple’s existing product lineup.

Launch Timing

Apple is expected to launch the low-cost MacBook in the first half of 2026. Updates are planned for the ‌MacBook Air‌ in early 2026, and the low-cost model could launch sometime in that same timeframe.

If you’re thinking about picking up a computer for lightweight tasks like document editing, web browsing, watching videos, and doing homework, you might want to wait to see what Apple has in store before buying a ‌MacBook Air‌, an ‌iPad‌, or a more affordable Windows machine or Chromebook.

Apple Releases First macOS Tahoe 26.3 Public Beta

Apple today provided public beta testers with the first release of an upcoming macOS Tahoe 26.3 update for testing purposes. The public beta comes two days after Apple provided the beta to developers.

After signing up for beta testing on Apple’s beta site, public beta testers can download the updates using the Software Update section in the System Settings app.

We don’t know about any new features in macOS Tahoe 26.3 as of yet, but Apple might introduce new capabilities in later beta releases.

The beta is limited to developers and public beta testers at the current time, but we are expecting Apple to release the update at the end of January.

iOS 26 Code Leak Reveals Apple Smart Home Hub Details

Apple is working on a smart home hub that will rely heavily on the more capable version of Siri that’s coming next year. We’ve heard quite a bit about the hub over the last two years, but a recent iOS 26 code leak provides additional insight into what we can expect and confirms rumored features.

Macworld claims to have access to an internal version of ‌iOS 26‌ that references several upcoming Apple devices, including the home hub. The site said that the code hints at these options:

Camera – The device will have a camera, but it will be limited to 1080p.
Face ID – The home hub will use Face ID for authentication and to identify who is in a room.
Profile switching – With the ‌Face ID‌ feature, the home hub will be able to switch to the profile for the person in the home who is interacting with the device. Apple engineers are apparently using an app to test the accuracy of the system.
Apple Intelligence – It will support Apple Intelligence and the new version of ‌Siri‌.

Other rumors suggest that the home hub will be something of a cross between an iPad and a HomePod. It will have a square-shaped screen that’s around seven inches, and an optional speaker base. We’re expecting the home hub to launch right around the time that the new version of ‌Siri‌ comes out in iOS 26.4, likely March or April.

Macworld also spotted signs of another device, identified as J229. This is apparently a “never-before-seen product” that has multiple sensors that can detect alarm sounds and capture images, but it is an accessory rather than a standalone device. Apple is rumored to be working on a home security camera to go along with the home hub. There’s no word on when the camera could launch.
