Why Migrating from SSRS to Power BI is Essential

In today’s rapidly shifting business landscape, the need for actionable insights is more pressing than ever. Many organizations still lean on legacy reporting systems, and as a result, they’re missing out on the flexibility and innovation that modern tools can deliver. Transitioning from traditional SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) to the dynamic, interactive environment of Power BI isn’t just a technological upgrade, it’s a strategic transformation.

Picture this: Your team pours hours into crafting reports with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), yet the final output feels static, leaving stakeholders wondering, “Where’s the insight?” In an era where data needs to speak in real-time, those static PDFs and rigid tables just don’t cut it anymore. You’re definitely not alone in this challenge. A recent 2024 Deloitte study pointed out that the majority of businesses still relying on legacy reporting tools like SSRS are bogged down by delayed decision-making. Meanwhile, competitors using modern platforms like Power BI are reacting twice as fast to market changes.

Many businesses have already made this shift and seen remarkable improvements. For instance, a UK-based digital bank recently overhauled its reporting process, which was previously slow and manual, making it difficult to keep up with fast-changing business needs. By migrating to Power BI, they automated workflows and cut dashboard creation time by 90%, turning what once took hours into a 10-minute task. More importantly, the shift provided their teams with real-time, reliable insights, empowering faster, smarter decision-making.

If you’re asking yourself how to migrate from SSRS to Power BI, or even just exploring the idea of SSRS to Power BI transformations, you’re in the right place. In this blog, we’ll walk you through the practical steps of migrating SSRS reports to Power BI, sharing insights and tips to help your team make a smooth and impactful transition.

The Changing Landscape of Business Reporting

Businesses today demand more than static, print-ready reports. They crave interactive dashboards, real-time analytics, and intuitive visualizations that speak directly to their operational challenges. Legacy systems, such as SSRS, have long served as the backbone of enterprise reporting. However, the evolving needs of modern businesses have rendered these systems less agile.

When we talk about how to migrate from SSRS to Power BI, it’s not merely about switching tools, it’s about embracing a mindset that prioritizes clarity, speed, and interactivity in reporting. This transformation can empower teams to uncover insights that were previously hidden in data silos, driving faster and more effective decision-making.

Why Migrate from SSRS to Power BI?

Bridging the Old and the New

The inherent limitation of SSRS lies in its static nature. While it has reliably delivered paginated reports for years, it lacks the flexibility demanded by today’s fast-paced data environments. On the other hand, Power BI offers a modern interface with self-service capabilities and robust data integration. This allows end users to slice and dice data in ways that support more nuanced analyses.

Transitioning to Power BI means opening up opportunities for enhanced visualization, improved user collaboration, and seamless integration with other data sources. More than just a technical shift, this migration drives tangible business benefits—accelerating decision-making, reducing the time analysts spend generating reports, and enabling teams to extract insights faster. With real-time data accessibility and automation capabilities, Power BI transforms reporting from a reactive process into a proactive strategy, allowing organizations to stay ahead in an increasingly data-driven landscape

Enhancing Operational Efficiency

According to a recent survey by Forrester in 2024, organizations that embraced modern reporting platforms reported an increase in operational efficiency and faster decision-making processes. Migrating from SSRS to Power BI plays a key role in this transformation, and the stat encapsulates the tangible benefits that come from making a strategic shift in how data is handled and reported.

Best budget gaming laptop deal today: Alienware Aurora 16 5060 is down to just $1,100

Dell’s Black Friday in July sale has knocked the price of an Alienware 16 laptop down to $1,099.99, and while it’s not the perfect machine, it’s a decent price for a reasonably affordable mid-range gaming setup.

This one comes with an RTX 5060, specifically the 8GB version, which isn’t the most future-proof GPU in the world. When James reviewed it, he wasn’t exactly wowed, calling it a modest upgrade at best. But things have settled a bit since launch. Driver issues have calmed down, and performance has been more stable across the board.

To get the deal, you’ll need to configure the laptop with an Intel Core 7 processor (the Core 9 version isn’t discounted), Windows 11 Home, the 8GB RTX 5060, 32GB of DDR5 RAM, and 1TB of M.2 NVMe storage. That’s a fairly balanced spec sheet for the price.

The 16-inch display runs at 120Hz, which is great for fast-paced games, and there are plenty of ports — two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, two USB-C ports (one with Power Delivery), HDMI 2.1, and even Ethernet. Most of them are on the back, which makes desk cable management that little bit less annoying.

It’s not the flashiest setup, but if you’re after a dependable gaming laptop without burning through your savings, this isn’t a bad shout, so long as you’re okay with the 8GB VRAM ceiling.

Still feeling unsure? There’s a $1,100 discount on an Alienware x16 R2 with an RTX 4080 — a stronger GPU with 12GB of GDDR6. Or, if money’s no object, you can save $450 on an Alienware 18 with an RTX 5080 and 16GB of GDDR7, though that’ll set you back nearly $3,000.

As James put it: “The RTX 5060 Ti is a good’un. It’s even been a few weeks since I’ve experienced any driver problems on my RTX 50 testing cards. Yay?” Not exactly glowing praise, but not a dealbreaker either.

Mars Sample Return Rocket Test Goes Off Without a Hitch

Northrop Grumman has hailed the successful test of a rocket designed to bring back samples from Mars’ surface. This latest static fire test confirmed the viability of a new propellant, as well as further showcasing the capabilities of the sample return rocket. This motor is part of the Mars Ascent Propulsion System (MAPS), which is a collaborative effort between NASA and the European Space Agency.

A Mars sample return is considered one of several important steps towards getting human boots on Mars. To that end, NASA handed out a contract in 2021 to Northrop Grumman to develop a rocket that could launch from a rover design and send samples into orbit around Mars for rendezvous, capture, and eventually return to Earth. This rocket is what will get that sample off the surface and into a captureable orbit.

“With this third successful full-scale static test, we have demonstrated a near-flight-ready design using proven space materials and propellants,” said Jeff Bemis, program manager of the Mars Ascent Propulsion System (MAPS) program at Northrop Grumman. “We’ve been to Mars before using materials and propellants such as these. Our materials and propellants have a legacy of proven reliability and are well-suited for the extreme conditions of space and planetary protection requirements.”

Northrop didn’t release much in the way of details about the test but did showcase the video above, calling it “successful.” The new propellant is reportedly one that Nortrop has used in other Northrop motors in the past, as part of its STAR scheme. This latest test is enough to confirm its readiness for use in future ascent propulsion missions, Northrop claims, regardless of the planet or landing method.

The test took place at Northrop Grumman’s Elkton, MD campus, which designs and manufactures solid and liquid propulsion systems and controls for rocket systems.

“The team will continue comprehensive analysis and testing to ensure the flight motors meet future mission requirements, including launch and landing loads specific to planets like Mars, as well as extreme thermal conditions,” Northrop’s MAPS chief engineer, Jonathan Katz, said.

Despite this newfound confidence, though, NASA does not plan for a sample return mission in the near future. Indeed, it may not take place until sometime in the 2040s. However, more details are expected in the near future, with AutoEvolution suggesting NASA will announce more concrete details about the mission in 2026.

Step-by-Step Guide to Buying and Designing Your First Home

Buying and Designing Your First Home

Buying your first home is one of life’s most exciting milestones—and one of the most complex. Between mortgage paperwork, competitive offers, and Pinterest-fueled design dreams, the process can feel like a juggling act of finances, timing, and taste. But with the right plan in place, the journey from securing your loan to styling your living room can be both strategic and deeply rewarding.

This guide walks you through each phase of the process, offering clear steps for navigating home financing, evaluating design potential, and turning a house into a home that reflects both your style and lifestyle.

Step 1: Secure Smart Financing That Works for You

Before you even begin house hunting, understanding your loan options is crucial. Many first-time buyers are surprised to learn how accessible homeownership can be—especially through government-backed financing.

In many parts of the country, government-backed loan programs are making homeownership more accessible to first-time buyers. For example, San Antonio FHA loans help buyers qualify with lower credit scores and smaller down payments. In Denver, Colorado, FHA programs have been particularly beneficial for younger professionals navigating a competitive urban market with high entry costs. Meanwhile, in cities like El Paso, Texas, these loans offer a flexible path to homeownership for growing families looking for space without overstretching their budgets.

It’s also important to recognize what you’re up against. The median price of a home in the U.S. has risen substantially in recent years, putting pressure on buyers to act strategically. According to data from the Federal Reserve, housing prices have been on a steady upward climb, making affordability and smart financing more important than ever.

Step 2: House Hunting with Design Potential in Mind

Once you’re pre-approved, the search begins. But beyond location and square footage, design-minded buyers should look for a home’s underlying potential. Think about natural light, room flow, ceiling height, and renovation flexibility. A property that feels uninspiring at first glance may become a canvas for transformation with the right elements in place.

In fast-moving markets, finding the perfect turnkey property is rare. Instead, prioritize homes where foundational elements are solid—even if the finishes are outdated. With a smart renovation plan, you can unlock major value while creating a space that aligns with your vision.

Understanding the home’s long-term value can also play into your decision-making. Today, tools that integrate AI into property valuation are becoming increasingly helpful for assessing a home’s true worth based on data patterns and regional trends. These insights can help first-time buyers make informed offers and avoid emotional overspending.

Step 3: Close with Confidence—Then Plan Your Design Priorities

Closing day is both a celebration and a checkpoint. While the ink dries on your paperwork, it’s time to shift focus toward your next big decisions: what improvements to prioritize first.

Most new homeowners balance excitement with budget constraints. Think critically about what needs attention now versus what can wait. Paint, lighting, and flooring often offer high-impact changes for relatively low cost—and can dramatically shift how the space feels from day one.

Creating a post-closing checklist with design tasks, shopping lists, and timelines will keep you focused without feeling overwhelmed. Your home doesn’t need to be “complete” on move-in day—it just needs to reflect your first steps toward making it yours.

Step 4: Start with Foundational Design Choices

Interior design can quickly get overwhelming, but starting with core elements helps set the tone. Begin with walls, lighting, and floors. Neutral tones with layered textures provide a strong base for nearly any style, whether you’re going boho, industrial, or minimal modern.

Incorporating smart home features—like thermostats, automated blinds, or lighting systems—can also increase both comfort and resale value. These upgrades don’t have to be expensive and can often be installed gradually over time.

As you develop your style, lean on trusted resources for guidance. It’s also helpful to consider how your lifestyle may evolve in the home over time. Design with flexibility in mind—multi-use rooms, modular furniture, and lighting that shifts with your schedule all contribute to a home that lives with you, not just around you.

Step 5: Make It Yours—Personal Touches That Elevate Your Space

Once the major updates are in place, the personalization begins. This is where your story shines through. Art, plants, textiles, and family heirlooms turn a property into a reflection of who you are.

If you’re coming from a rental, resist the urge to buy everything new all at once. Blend existing pieces with a few intentional upgrades. You’ll appreciate the layered, authentic vibe it creates—and your budget will too.

Thinking long-term? It’s worth exploring whether your home could become a future investment. At some point, you may be weighing whether to sell your home or rent it, and knowing your goals from the start can shape how you style and maintain your space moving forward.

Conclusion

From financial prep to final flourishes, buying your first home is a uniquely rewarding process. With the right loan, a sharp eye for design potential, and a clear plan, it’s entirely possible to build a space that supports your lifestyle and inspires your daily life. Every detail you add—whether budget-friendly or bold—helps transform your new house into a place that truly feels like home.

I’ve tested dozens of cheap portable power stations and this EcoFlow is my favorite

Closeup of EcoFlow River 2

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET

Power banks have given way to power stations.

And while I really like the colossal capacity offered by those behemoths, sometimes I want something I can grab quickly to take with me on a job or in an emergency.

The EcoFlow River 2 fits the bill.

EcoFlow River 2 specs

  • Capacity: 256Wh
  • Net Weight: Approximately 7.7lbs
  • Dimensions: 9.6 x 8.5 x 5.7inches
  • AC Input: 100-120V 50Hz/60Hz, 360W Max
  • Solar Input: 8A Max,11-30V 110W
  • Car Input: 12V/24V, 8A, 100W Max
  • USB-C Input/Output: 5/9/12/15/20V 3A, 60W Max
  • AC Output: 120V 50Hz/60Hz, 300W (Surge 600W)
  • DC Output: 12.6V 8A, 100W Max
  • USB-A Output: 5V 2.4A 12W Max
  • Cell Chemistry: Lithium iron phosphate
  • Cycle Life: 80%+ capacity after 3000 cycles
  • App Control: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Discharge Temperature: -10°C to 45°C (14°F to 113°F)
  • Charge Temperature: 0°C to 45°C (32°F to 113°F)
  • Optimal Operating Temperature: 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F)
  • Storage Temperature: -10°C to 45°C (20°C to 30°C is best)/14°F to 113°F (68°F to 86°F is best)

The striking thing about the River 2 is how light it is — 7.7 pounds feels like nothing after some of the power stations I’ve handled lately. On top of that, the handle is ergonomic and comfortable.

Also: I tested one of the cheapest portable power stations and it made road-tripping a breeze

I could see this being a power station that I’d be happy to carry for a few miles if I needed that sort of power for drones, or cameras if I was on a shoot.

Hand holding handle of EcoFlow River 2

I really appreciate the comfortable carry handle.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET

With a capacity of 256Wh, this is small enough to allow the River 2 to be portable, but powerful enough to run a 100W load for close to 2.5 hours. The AC output can handle a sustained output of 300W (which would drain the River 2 in under an hour) and surge loads up to 600W.

Also: This Anker USB-C power bank solved my biggest problem with portable chargers

The River 2 can use four methods for recharging: AC, solar, 12V in-car, and USB-C. Using AC, the unit can go from zero to 100% in an hour, which means less time waiting for it to be ready.

Using portable solar panels, you could have the River 2 charged up in about 3 hours, which is very respectable.

Worried all that charging and discharging is going to wear out the River 2? Don’t be.

If you were to completely charge and discharge the River 2 six times a week, EcoFlow claims the lithium iron phosphate batteries would last for 9.6 years before their capacity drops to 80%.

Also: The best portable power stations we’ve tested

The unit features a built-in fan to keep things cool when charging and discharging at high wattages. This fan reaches 62db, which is the sort of sound level you’d get from a household dishwasher.

Closeup of fan on EcoFlow River 2

The fan keeps the unit cool when the going gets hard.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET

The River 2 also can be used as a backup device when the power goes out. It can detect that the power has gone out and switch over to the battery in 30ms, so devices will keep running as if nothing had happened. For example, a typical Wi-Fi router draws about 10W, which means this unit can keep the router going for almost eight hours.

The unit is rugged and well-built and shrugs off the inevitable knocks and bumps of regular use.

At $239, this is a very competitively priced power station, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a truly portable power solution.

If your architectural design company is a Fusion 360 user, look for speedy prototyping and stunning 3D product rendering built into the process. That’s a twofer for electronics design and visual narrative.

KiCad 7 – Open source joins 3D design coolness

Open-source can’t hold a candle to the giants, right? Wrong. KiCad has come of age as a legitimate 3D PCB design player, and the new release (KiCad 7) is taking things to an entirely new level.

Why is it a clever choice for agile teams?

KiCad isn’t merely free, it’s absurdly packed with features. It has a schematic editor, an effective layout editor, and a steadily more capable 3D viewer. The wizardry is in its 3D integration: you can see fully-rendered boards, turn and examine components, and even export your design for product rendering or enclosure design in third-party software.

The most recent versions also have STEP file export support, which makes working with mechanical engineers easy. Services that adopt KiCad aren’t only cost-friendly, they’re efficient, flexible, and community-focused.

And, KiCad accommodates:

  • Specialized 3D component modeling
  • Scripting for automation and efficiency
  • Integration with tools such as FreeCAD for enclosure prototyping

Best fit for:

  • Open hardware initiatives
  • Freelance engineers and agile startups
  • Anyone who prioritizes transparency and customization

If your design house is leveraging KiCad design experts, they’re probably agile, quick, and not hesitant to dig deep into customization. Throw in nice 3D visualization, and it’s a very compelling package, particularly for cost-sensitive projects.

Other 3D PCB design software: Worth a glance

Although the top three are at the head of the pack, some other 3D PCB design software packages are worth a look based on your project’s complexity, schedule, or cost:

OrCAD/Allegro by Cadence

Heavy-duty, industry-level performance meets detailed 3D modeling. Ideal for aerospace and automotive, but probably overkill for wearables or IoT gadgets. If your provider uses it, you’re likely working on a very sophisticated design.

DipTrace

User-friendly interface and decent 3D modeling make this a favorite for small businesses and individual designers. It’s not Altium, but it delivers solid results for many mid-range electronics projects.

CircuitStudio

Altium-designed, but cheaper and lighter. Has good 3D visualization service capabilities and is an excellent transition point before fully using Altium.

The importance of 3D PCB design tools for your business

Let’s be real, you don’t have to know all the technical ins and outs of how your electronics are designed. That’s what your design team is for. But knowing the kind of tools they’re using, particularly sophisticated ones like 3D PCB design software, can make a huge difference in what you end up with.

And that makes everything move faster. Rather than having to do several sets of prototypes, you have a real preview upfront in the process. It’s less painful to approve a design when you can actually see how it will look and perform. That reduces iteration time, which generally translates into faster delivery and less pain.

The use of 3D PCB design tools significantly enhances the visual appeal of your product for design engineering services. These advanced tools allow for features such as perfectly aligned USB ports, meticulously fitted components, and an overall look that is much cleaner and more professional. It’s this level of sophistication and attention to detail that can truly captivate customers, investors, and stakeholders alike. Moreover, when discussing stakeholders, it’s important to note that these tools often facilitate the creation of high-quality 3D product renderings.

Such renderings are invaluable for a variety of purposes, whether you are pitching your innovative idea to potential investors, launching an engaging crowdfunding campaign, or developing marketing materials that truly impress your audience. The ability to present a stunning visual representation of your product can make all the difference in showcasing its features and benefits, ultimately contributing to its success in the competitive market.

Better tools mean better results at the end of the day. When your design partner is working with design-for-manufacturing-enabled software and precise real-world geometry alignment, you get rapid development, reduced errors, and a product ready for prime time.

No, you don’t have to be a software guru, but understanding what happens behind the scenes is beneficial.

3D product rendering: Prettiest pictures, too

Envision a photorealistic rendering of your product, complete with the circuit board, even before creating a single prototype. This isn’t just for show; it’s a strategic approach. Services employing 3D PCB software with photorealistic rendering services are able to display precisely what your board will look like in your enclosure. They can model cable routing, connector locations, thermal spacings, and clearances. Additionally, they assist marketing organizations in producing sleek images long before a product launch and develop immersive presentations for stakeholders or pre-sales campaigns. So the next time a provider sends you a stunningly well-lit 3D rendering of your electronics module, don’t roll your eyes.

iPhone 17 Lineup Likely to Be Announced in Week of September 8, 2025

Apple is expected to hold its annual iPhone announcement event during the week of September 8, 2025, with September 9 or 10 emerging as the most likely dates.

The anticipated timing of the iPhone 17 event was outlined in the latest “Power On” newsletter from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. According to Gurman, Apple traditionally schedules its ‌iPhone‌ unveilings for the week following Labor Day in the United States. In 2025, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 1, placing the target week between Monday, September 8, and Friday, September 12.

Apple has consistently avoided holding major product announcements on Fridays, eliminating September 12 from consideration. The company has also refrained from scheduling events on September 11 in recent years. Based on these constraints, Monday, September 8, Tuesday, September 9 and Wednesday, September 10 are the most plausible dates for the event. Gurman believes Tuesday, September 9 or Wednesday, September 10 is most likely.

Gurman’s projections are supported by an analysis of Apple’s event history over the past decade. Of the ten most recent ‌iPhone‌ launch events, five were held on a Tuesday and three on a Wednesday.

Only one occurred on a Monday, in 2024, making that day a less likely candidate despite its theoretical availability in the calendar. The majority of Apple’s fall ‌iPhone‌ events also took place during the second week of September, with the only major deviation being in 2020, when the event was delayed until October due to pandemic-related production issues.

This year’s event is expected to see the announcement of the ‌iPhone 17‌, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ Max, Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. The company typically issues press invitations roughly one week in advance.

Wordle today: Answer and hint #1486 for July 14

Today’s Wordle hint is right here if you need it, ready for use straight from the top but just as helpful further down the board if you like the idea of seeing how you get on first. Using our general tips to refresh your general tactical guessing can help a lot too. And the answer to the July 14 (1486) Wordle is on standby if those green letters refuse to turn up on time.

When my first row only revealed one slightly disappointing yellow letter, I decided I was going to fight back. Every new line was a new battle, every clue a fresh angle of attack. I was so focussed on showing Wordle exactly who was in charge I may have, um, missed an obvious earlier chance to win. Maybe.

Wordle today: A hint for Monday, July 14

This action could be as monumental as reversing a major decision, or as casual as removing a tie. Whatever was done is no more.

Is there a double letter in Wordle today?
