Apple reportedly testing out four different styles for its smart glasses that will rival Meta Ray-Bans

Apple may be late to the smart glasses market, but it could be covering all its bases with up to four potential styles for its upcoming product. According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple could launch some or all of the four styles it’s currently testing for its smart glasses.

Gurman reported Apple is testing out a large rectangular frame that’s comparable to Ray-Ban Wayfarers, a slimmer rectangular design like the glasses that Apple CEO Tim Cook wears, a larger oval or circular frame and a smaller oval or circle option. Apple is also working on a range of colors, including black, ocean blue and light brown, according to Bloomberg.

Internally code-named N50 for now, Apple’s upcoming smart glasses will compete directly with the second-gen Ray-Ban Meta model. While similar, Apple might be differentiating its design with “vertically oriented oval lenses with surrounding lights,” according to the report. Like Meta’s smart glasses, Apple’s upcoming product will capture photos and videos, but is meant to better sync with an iPhone, allowing users to take advantage of Apple’s ecosystem for editing, sharing, phone calls, notifications, music and even its voice assistant, according to Gurman. The release of Apple’s smart glasses could even coincide with the upcoming improved Siri that should arrive with iOS 27.

Gurman reported that Apple could reveal its smart glasses as soon as the end of 2026 or early 2027, followed by an official release sometime in 2027. As for the competition, Meta released its latest model that’s better suited for prescription lenses and offers a more customizable fit.

Next year’s rumored foldable iPhone will showcase an ultra-thin design resembling “two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side,” according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

Writing in the Q&A section of his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says Apple’s first foldable device will be “super thin and a design achievement,” combining Apple’s thinnest iPhone form factor with cutting-edge folding technology. However, this engineering feat is still expected to come with a premium price tag of at least $2,000.

Apple launched its ultra-thin new iPhone Air last week. The device is 5.64mm thick and represents the company’s thinnest iPhone to date, though it’s still shy of the M4 iPad Pro’s impressive thinness at 5.3mm.

Gurman says manufacturing the foldable iPhone will involve Foxconn in China, despite recent speculation about potential production in India. The device remains slated for 2026, dropping around Apple’s traditional fall launch window, “give or take” hedges the Bloomberg reporter.

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously outlined specifications for the foldable iPhone, including a 7.8-inch inner display and 5.5-inch outer screen, with pricing between $2,000 and $2,500. Apple reportedly plans to forgo Face ID in favor of Touch ID integrated into the side button to optimize internal space. The titanium device is expected to include a dual-lens rear camera, with a front-facing camera for both folded and unfolded states.

The foldable iPhone will compete in an increasingly crowded market dominated by Samsung’s Galaxy Z series, establishing Apple’s late entry into the folding smartphone category after years of the rumored device’s development.

Mark Gurman Responds to Last Week’s Apple Device Leaks

Last week, Apple released and then pulled a software tool that accidentally contained identifiers for many unreleased devices and chips, according to MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris. His findings included new models of the Studio Display, Apple TV, Apple Watches, Apple Vision Pro, iPad mini, HomePod mini, and more.

As always, nothing is official yet and Apple’s plans could change.

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman responded to the leaks.

“The findings corroborate a lot of what I’ve reported, including that fresh Apple TV and HomePod mini models will arrive this fall, that new iPads are in the works for next year, and that updated monitors are coming,” he wrote.

Gurman added that he continues to hear that Apple is testing versions of the Vision Pro with the M4 chip, despite the code pointing to a new model with an M5 chip. It is plausible that Apple has considered both options, though, he said.

So, expect the Vision Pro to get an M4 chip or newer. It will be a minor upgrade either way.

The current Vision Pro has an M2 chip.

iPhone 17 Lineup Likely to Be Announced in Week of September 8, 2025

Apple is expected to hold its annual iPhone announcement event during the week of September 8, 2025, with September 9 or 10 emerging as the most likely dates.

The anticipated timing of the iPhone 17 event was outlined in the latest “Power On” newsletter from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman. According to Gurman, Apple traditionally schedules its ‌iPhone‌ unveilings for the week following Labor Day in the United States. In 2025, Labor Day falls on Monday, September 1, placing the target week between Monday, September 8, and Friday, September 12.

Apple has consistently avoided holding major product announcements on Fridays, eliminating September 12 from consideration. The company has also refrained from scheduling events on September 11 in recent years. Based on these constraints, Monday, September 8, Tuesday, September 9 and Wednesday, September 10 are the most plausible dates for the event. Gurman believes Tuesday, September 9 or Wednesday, September 10 is most likely.

Gurman’s projections are supported by an analysis of Apple’s event history over the past decade. Of the ten most recent ‌iPhone‌ launch events, five were held on a Tuesday and three on a Wednesday.

Only one occurred on a Monday, in 2024, making that day a less likely candidate despite its theoretical availability in the calendar. The majority of Apple’s fall ‌iPhone‌ events also took place during the second week of September, with the only major deviation being in 2020, when the event was delayed until October due to pandemic-related production issues.

This year’s event is expected to see the announcement of the ‌iPhone 17‌, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, ‌iPhone 17 Pro‌ Max, Apple Watch SE 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 3. The company typically issues press invitations roughly one week in advance.

Inside Apple, he said that the device is known as the “Glasswing,” in reference to a type of butterfly that has transparent wings.

The new iOS design will pair nicely with the simplistic, all-glass 20th-anniversary iPhone, which is expected to launch in September 2027.

Apple Will Reportedly Be More Cautious About Announcing New Features Well in Advance

Apple plans to mostly stop announcing new features more than a few months before they are ready to launch, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman and Drake Bennett. The pair of reporters revealed this noteworthy tidbit towards the bottom of a lengthy report about Apple’s artificial intelligence shortcomings today.

This alleged change in strategy comes after Apple was forced to delay its more personalized version of Siri, which will be powered by Apple Intelligence. Apple first previewed the promised Siri upgrades during its WWDC 2024 keynote, and at the time it said the features would be available within the following year.

Apple also missed its promised 2024 timeframe for launching next-generation CarPlay, which it first announced all the way back at WWDC 2022. The company finally announced the launch of CarPlay Ultra last week, with the software system rolling out in high-end Aston Martin vehicles in the U.S. and Canada this month.

Apple’s Smart Home Hub Now ‘Postponed’ Due to Delayed Siri Features

Apple has pushed back the launch of its rumored smart home hub due to delayed Siri features, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

Gurman no longer expects the home hub to launch this month, but he has not provided a revised timeframe for the device’s release.

“At one point, the company had hoped to announce this product in March,” he said, in his Power On newsletter today. “But because the device, to an extent, relies on the delayed Siri capabilities, it has been postponed as well.”

This comes a few days after Apple said it needs more time to finish the more personalized version of Siri, which it previewed at WWDC 2024 last June. The promised Siri upgrades will be powered by Apple Intelligence, so you will need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer.

“We’ve also been working on a more personalized Siri, giving it more awareness of your personal context, as well as the ability to take action for you within and across your apps,” said Apple, in a statement shared with Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber. “It’s going to take us longer than we thought to deliver on these features and we anticipate rolling them out in the coming year.”

Gurman said Apple was initially aiming to launch the more personalized Siri as part of iOS 18.4, which is already in beta and lacks any of the promised features. He then said that the features were delayed until iOS 18.5 in May, but Apple’s statement suggests the features will take even longer to arrive. The more personalized Siri will likely debut at some point between iOS 19 in September 2025 and iOS 19.4 in March 2026.

Whenever they launch, the Siri upgrades will include understanding of a user’s personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls. For example, during its WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple showed an iPhone user asking Siri about their mother’s flight and lunch reservation plans based on info from the Mail and Messages apps.

With these new Siri capabilities rumored to be at the core of Apple’s smart home hub, it would make sense if the company has pushed back its internal timeframe for launching the device. It’s not ideal to launch one without the other. This is not an official delay, given that Apple never publicly announced plans to release a home hub, but it is clear that Apple has missed its internal targets for the more personalized Siri and this related project.

Gurman previously said the home hub would be “Apple’s most significant release of the year,” as it represents the company’s “first step toward a bigger role in the smart home.” He said the device will be like a “smaller and cheaper iPad” that lets users “control appliances, conduct FaceTime chats, and handle other tasks.”

The device is expected to be similar to a HomePod with a screen, with rumored features including a 6-inch or 7-inch display, an A18 chip, and Apple Intelligence support. Gurman said it can be attached to a tabletop base with a speaker, or mounted on a wall.

So, when will Apple’s home hub launch? “In the coming year” probably applies here, too.

iPad 11 With A17 Pro Chip and Apple Intelligence Rumor Was Wrong

Apple today updated the entry-level iPad with an A16 chip. Unfortunately, however, the device continues to lack support for Apple Intelligence.

Apple Intelligence is not available on the new entry-level iPad, according to Apple’s tech specs.

In January, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said the new entry-level iPad would be equipped with an A17 Pro chip, enabling Apple Intelligence on the device:

The new entry-level iPads — J481 and J482 — will get faster processors and Apple Intelligence. The current models have the A14 chip and 4 gigabytes of memory. Look for the new versions to have the A17 Pro chip, matching the iPad mini, and a bump to 8 gigabytes of memory. That’s the minimum needed to support the new AI platform.

This rumor proved to be wrong.

A private account on X with a proven track record ended up being correct about the entry-level iPad getting an A16 chip instead.

The entry-level iPad remains the only iPad model in Apple’s current lineup that lacks support for Apple Intelligence. The features are available on any iPad Pro or iPad Air model with the M1 chip or newer, as well as the latest iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip.

Apple’s Rumored Smart Home Hub Still ‘Months Away’ From Shipping

If you have been waiting for Apple’s rumored smart home hub to launch, prepare to wait some more. In his Power On newsletter over the weekend, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said the device is still “months away” from shipping.

Based on that wording, the home hub will not ship until April at the earliest, but potentially not until much later in the year. Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said the device would enter mass production in the second half of 2025, so it is quite possible the home hub will be announced in September or later.

Gurman previously said the home hub will be “Apple’s most significant release of the year,” as it represents the company’s “first step toward a bigger role in the smart home.” He said the device will be like a “smaller and cheaper iPad” that lets users “control appliances, conduct FaceTime chats, and handle other tasks.”

The home hub will run a new “homeOS” operating system with a customizable widget-focused home screen, and revolve around Siri, Apple Intelligence, and HomeKit, according to Gurman. The device could double as a home security system by displaying camera footage, and a built-in camera would allow for FaceTime video calls.

Apple’s hub would compete with products like Google’s Nest Hub and Amazon’s Echo Show. It is unclear if Apple will use HomePod or HomePad branding for the device, or if it will opt for a fully unique name, such as the Apple Home.

Powerbeats Pro 2 Coming Soon: Apple to Announce Them ‘Imminently’

In September, Apple said that it would be launching Powerbeats Pro 2 in 2025, and it appears the wireless earbuds are coming very soon.

In his Power On newsletter today, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman said the Powerbeats Pro 2 are “due imminently.” In addition to Apple filing the Powerbeats Pro 2 in regulatory databases last month, Gurman said Apple is planning to hold product briefings with the media “in a week or so” to go over the new features of the wireless earbuds.

Powerbeats Pro are a sportier, fitness-focused alternative to AirPods Pro with built-in, adjustable ear hooks for a secure fit. Apple’s teaser video last year showed MLB star Shohei Ohtani wearing the Powerbeats Pro 2, revealing a more vertical, slimmer design compared to the original Powerbeats Pro, which are now discontinued.

We previously reported that the Powerbeats Pro 2 will offer heart rate monitoring during workouts. Based on our iOS 18 code findings, you will be able to connect the Powerbeats Pro 2 to gym equipment like a treadmill to measure heart rate, and the data will be visible in the Health app and other supported apps on the iPhone.

We also confirmed that Powerbeats Pro 2 will support Active Noise Cancellation, Spatial Audio, and Adaptive Audio. The earbuds and charging case will be available in Jet Black, Quick Sand, Electric Orange, and Hyper Purple, and the case should have a USB-C port.

Based on other recent Beats headphones, other potential upgrades for the Powerbeats Pro 2 include improved sound quality, longer battery life, and improved cross-platform compatibility with Android features like Find My Device.
