Google Messages Change Complicates Things for Dual-SIM Users

Google is testing a change to its Messages app that could affect how dual-SIM Android users switch between their phone numbers. The update moves the SIM selection option from the message composition field to the conversation details section, which is currently available in the beta version, as reported by Android Authority. That means you’ll have to make a couple of extra taps to select the preferred SIM card.

In the current version of Google Messages, dual-SIM users can easily switch between SIM cards using a prominent icon right there in the message composition area. The app also remembers the preferred SIM for each conversation thread. In this scenario, just tap the SIM selector option, choose your desired SIM, and tap on the message box to start typing the messages; that’s three steps in total.

But in the beta version, the SIM swap icon has been removed from the message composition field, and the setting has been relocated to the conversation details section. Users will have to go to the conversation details to change the SIM card. That’s two extra taps.

As of now, this change is currently limited to the beta version of Google Messages. The stable release has not been affected, and it’s possible that user feedback could influence whether this change is implemented in the final version.

Google continues to test and refine (questionable) its Messages app. Recently, it was seen that Google is testing WhatsApp call functionality directly from Google Messages, which was earlier reserved for Google Meets. Also, it’s getting more secure.
