This Could Be Android’s Response to the iPhone’s Dynamic Island

Google is set to introduce a new feature called Live Updates in Android 16, which may serve as a counterpart to Apple’s Dynamic Island on iPhones. This feature is expected to roll out with Android 16 this year and can improve users’ interactions with real-time information on their devices.

Android 16 Beta 1 has partially implemented support for progress-centric notifications. This new notification style lets developers display the progress of activities such as rideshare pickups, food deliveries, or navigation directions using points and segments on a progress bar, as reported by Android Authority.

Unlike regular notifications that may be collapsed into a compact shelf on the lock screen, Live Updates are expected to be displayed more prominently so that users can easily access important, time-sensitive information without unlocking their devices.

Live Updates may show up as small icons in the status bar and on screens that are always visible. This matches earlier reports about the Rich Ongoing Notifications API, which showed similar features.

The Live Updates feature is still in progress, with only partial implementation in Android 16 Beta 1.

As an Android user, I really love the implementation of Dynamic Island and wish I had something like that on my device. Now, there are third-party apps that can do it, and I actively use one of them, but it is not as smoothly implemented as I would have liked.
