SDK-Style Support for Extension Projects

Starting in Visual Studio 18.5, you can create and build Visual Studio extensions (VSIX) using an officially supported SDK-style project. This brings VSIX projects into the modern build and deployment pipeline, improving incremental build performance and making the build → deploy → debug workflow more reliable. Install the Visual Studio extension development workload to get the templates and tooling and try it out for yourself!

Note: Extensions written using the modern VisualStudio.Extensibility framework already supports SDK-style projects today. This update extends the same SDK-style experience to VSSDK-based Visual Studio extensions.

 What We Are Adding:

  • Official SDK-style support for projects that produce VSSDK-based extensions.
  • Build time reductions of up to 75%! We’ve added end-to-end incremental build support including Fast Up To Date Check and up to date deployment logic. Through internal adoption, we see a reduction of up to 75% in build time in large solutions for small changes or changes confined to a single sub project.
  • Updated in-box templates: SDK-style by default, with the familiar project items (tool windows, classifiers, commands, etc.).

Project Usage

Creating a project is done the same way you are used to, using the “VSIX Project” or “Empty VSIX Project” template:

new vsix project template image

This will yield a much more compact csproj than before: only 20 lines:

<Project Sdk="Microsoft.NET.Sdk">

  <PropertyGroup>
    <TargetFramework>net472</TargetFramework>
    <Nullable>enable</Nullable>
    <LangVersion>14</LangVersion>

    <!-- VSIX settings -->
    <VSSDKBuildToolsAutoSetup>true</VSSDKBuildToolsAutoSetup>
    <VsixDeployOnDebug>true</VsixDeployOnDebug>
    <GeneratePkgDefFile>true</GeneratePkgDefFile>
  </PropertyGroup>
  <ItemGroup>
    <ProjectCapability Include="CreateVsixContainer" />
  </ItemGroup>

  <ItemGroup>
    <PackageReference Include="Microsoft.VisualStudio.SDK" Version="17.14.40265" ExcludeAssets="runtime" />
    <PackageReference Include="Microsoft.VSSDK.BuildTools" Version="18.5.38461" />
  </ItemGroup>
</Project>

Does it impact my extension?

  • If you create a new extension, you will automatically get full SDK-Style support.
  • Your existing MPF style extension will continue to work should you choose not to migrate. This update adds an official SDK-style option; it doesn’t force a conversion.
  • You can update your project to an SDK-style project file to take advantage of these features.
  • Vsixmanifest files included in SDK-style projects now open by default in the XML editor. The old designer is still available through the ‘Open With’ menu.

Migration In Brief

  • When available, you can do this in the project configuration:
    configuration manager image
  • <VSSDKBuildToolsAutoSetup>true</VSSDKBuildToolsAutoSetup> will setup most sensible defaults for you and reduce the size of your csproj. This will setup options like CreateVsixContainer as true, and the legacy DeployExtension to false.
  • <VsixDeployOnDebug>true</VsixDeployOnDebug> Should be added to your csproj if you will add it to other solution files to ensure the deploy checkbox is set automatically.

Agentic conversion

We’re experimenting with ways of making this as easy as possible for you. To that end, we’ve added an agent skill to the vs-agent-plugins repository you can use in conjunction with the Modernize agent. Let us know whether this workflow is helpful, or if you have a different agentic workflow in mind for extension development.

Reference projects

Here are a few extensions that are already converted, so you can use them as references.

The Enterprise Unification Gap

The Enterprise
Unification Gap

Why 87% of IT Leaders Would Switch Productivity Suites

Overview

For years IT teams have closed the gaps in their tech stacks with connectors and add-ons. The result? A “frankentool” environment that’s expensive to maintain and complex to secure.

The data is staggering: only 6% of teams say their productivity suite is seamless. That’s why the next era of enterprise modernization won’t be about adding new features. It’ll be about unifying the tech you have—AI, collaboration, and device management—into a single, cohesive system.

In this new report from Google Workspace and JumpCloud, you’ll discover the full extent of the enterprise unification gap. And how to stop the cycle of tool complexity once and for all.

Grab your copy to learn:

Easily Convert PDF Files to DWG with a Command

PDF is a widely versatile file format, and one often used when sharing CAD drawings. However, the amount of information in a PDF file is far less than that of a DWG file, which contains the necessary data for design.

ARES CAD software can convert DWG drawings to PDF format, and naturally, it can also convert PDF to DWG with a single command – no need to install a separate PDF printer driver. ARES can also convert a PDF file that was originally converted from a DWG file back into a DWG file.

In this article, we explain how to convert PDF files to DWG files using ARES Commander, the world’s No. 1 AutoCAD alternative, as well as ARES Kudo and ARES Touch.

An advantage of ARES is that you can convert files with a single command, without having to install a separate PDF printer driver. To convert a PDF CAD drawing to DWG in ARES, use the IMPORTPDF command. Of course, you can also export the drawing and save it again in PDF format. For more details, please watch this video. PDF Import in “ARES” CAD Software

The ARES Trinity of CAD software comprises three distinct, yet interconnected, software applications: ARES Commander (desktop), ARES Touch (mobile), and ARES Kudo (cloud). All of them are equipped with 2D CAD features, allowing you to freely edit drawings by converting PDF files to DWG files. Watch this video to see the process of converting PDF to DWG with ARES Touch.

For a demonstration of converting PDF to DWG with ARES Kudo, watch the video “Convert PDF to DWG Online.”

What if you have many PDFs to convert to editable DWG files? That could be time-consuming to complete manually. Thanks to ARES Kudo, you can use Online Drawings Automation to convert your PDFs automatically.

With this powerful service, users can schedule many tasks — including batch file conversion — to be handled in the cloud. To see how simple this hands-off process is, watch the video:

Can I convert PDF drawings to DWG for free with ARES?

ARES offers a 30-day free trial. During this trial period, you can convert to DWG for free. The 30-day free trial is available here.

Can I convert PDF drawings to DWG online with ARES?

The online version of ARES CAD software, called ARES Kudo, can be used in the cloud. ARES Kudo can not only convert PDF drawings to DWG, but can also edit DWG drawings online.

What is the difference between ARES DWG conversion and a free converter?

The biggest difference is likely the security issue. ARES is not merely a conversion app; it is a general-purpose CAD application and the No. 1 alternative to AutoCAD, and it has been adopted by world-renowned global companies. ARES provides robust security compared to free converters – it can be used with confidence in a secure environment.

Darkness Looks Good on Overwatch Heroes in New Collaboration

Summary

  • Overwatch x Hatred’s Reckoning is a deliberate clash of hope and darkness that lets both worlds stay true to themselves.
  • Five new Legendary skins reimagine Overwatch Heroes through Sanctuary’s lenses of Hell and chaos.
  • Available April 28–May 18, there will also be returning crossover skins, new challenges, and Twitch Drops through May 10.

Some collaborations are about swapping outfits. Overwatch x Hatred’s Reckoning, running April 28–May 18, is about figuring out how two very different worlds can borrow each other’s clothes—and still feel like themselves.

Overwatch is famously hopeful. It’s full of bright colors and Heroes who look like they believe things can get better, even when they’re knee‑deep in chaos. The world that inspires Hatred’s Reckoning, on the other hand, is all heavy atmosphere and big moods that don’t politely leave when the fight is over. Blending the two didn’t mean dialing either one down, it was about finding the overlap. Being able to bridge that gap without drifting into imitation required intention, restraint, and deep creative trust.

Interpretation was the key. The creative teams quickly realized that beneath the surface, both worlds actually take similar things very seriously: conviction, sacrifice, and what it means to keep fighting when things get grim. Once that clicked, the fun part began—asking what Overwatch Heroes might look like if they’d grown up in a different genre of battle.

Thus, five new Legendary skins were created, each playing with that “alternate fate” fantasy.

Ramattra x Mephisto turns hatred into something slow and inevitable—less explosion, more creeping dread.

Brigitte x Paladin is all about holding the line, faith and steel working together with zero hesitation.

Freja x Rogue keeps things quiet and efficient—clean shapes, quick strikes, no wasted motion.

Lifeweaver x Warlock leans into stark danger, where life and corruption are uncomfortably close friends.

And Mauga x Druid is joyful chaos showing up with muscles, teeth, and a very loud opinion.

Mauga’s skin proved to be a particularly creative puzzle. Turning a shapeshifting Werebear fantasy into a dual‑chaingun bruiser meant solving a lot of questions at once. His bear face, jaw, and eyes had to look great, animate smoothly, and still read clearly during gameplay. It was a balancing act between visual flair, technical reality, and “does this still feel like Mauga?” He’s the perfect example of exactly the kind of challenge the team loves tackling together.

In addition to these five skins, four Legendary skins return to complete the visual dialogue: Pharah x InariusMoira x LilithReinhardt x Imperius, and Sombra x Gilded Hunter. Together, they act as echoes of earlier explorations of Sanctuary.

Alongside the skins, original event challenges return, joined by new rewards like the deliciously deadly Crab with a Knife Weapon Charm and Twitch Drops running now through May 10.

Hatred’s Reckoning proves that when hope and darkness collide, heroes rise—even when they’re wearing borrowed clothes from another world. Overwatch x Hatred’s Reckoning runs April 28–May 18.

Modder upgrades their supposedly ‘vintage’ 2008 ThinkPad with an RTX 4070 Super and I can feel myself crumbling to dust

I can definitely understand the cult following Lenovo ThinkPads have garnered over almost two decades of robust laptops. But as a PC gamer, I am perhaps less convinced by external graphics cards, i.e. eGPUs. Still, I’ve stumbled across a modding project combining the two things that I simply can’t look away from.

It turns out Instagram is a surprisingly good place to discover neat hardware projects. Case in point, user KabutoKunai has brought their 2008 ThinkPad up to date with an RTX 4070 Super. Opting for the chunky desktop version of the card, it will have to run outside of the laptop’s chassis like an eGPU—but how does the modder hook up all of this hardware, released decades apart?

How one venture firm is investing in an increasingly fragmented world

The world today is riven by cultural differences, political divisions, and geopolitical disputes — a challenging environment for any investor hunting for startups that can grow large enough to deliver venture-scale returns.

Kompas VC has developed a regionally sensitive strategy to help it navigate, and invest in, this fragmented world. And it’s putting fresh capital towards this approach with a new €160 million fund ($187.5 million), the firm told TechCrunch.

“We see the world really falling into three main spheres of economic activity, of political activity — the U.S., Europe, and China,” Sebastian Peck, partner at Kompas VC, told TechCrunch. “We certainly see today that these three domains follow very, very different trajectories.”

Kompas has staked its reputation on backing startups that tackle core industrial competitiveness challenges, from manufacturing and supply chains to critical infrastructure and sustainability. Those themes haven’t disappeared, but different regions emphasize them to varying degrees.

“There was a lot of enthusiasm around these themes back in 2021,” Peck said. “In 2026, we’re in a very, very different paradigm. It’s all about AI, it’s all about fast growth, very explosive growth. A lot of big topics that we partially play to but also are not really part of what we stand for.”

“Our focus is in the physical world, anything around producing physical goods,” he added, saying that Kompas focuses on startups working on decarbonization, productivity, and risk management. “We’ve found our niche.”

That niche turns out to be pretty broad. Reshoring is en vogue in nearly every market, and depending on the startup, those markets typically have more than enough scale for a firm like Kompas.

Techcrunch event

San Francisco, CA
|
October 13-15, 2026

Though dwarfed by some venture funds these days, Kompas’s newly raised second fund should give it ample opportunity to lead early stage rounds with checks ranging from €3 million to €5 million.

As a European fund, Kompas has access to a range of founders and startups in the region. But it must weigh how global fragmentation might limit the potential for some to deliver venture returns. Peck cites prefab housing as an example. The approach is widely used in Scandinavian countries, but it isn’t as common in Germany or the rest of Europe, let alone the United States.

“It feels like such an intuitive solution. It’s a product that is effectively an industrial product. It should be highly scalable,” he said. Ultimately, the reason it doesn’t resonate outside Scandinavia has more to do with “cultural conditioning” than the technology itself, he said. “In that industry, if the U.S. isn’t the market you can go to, you need to look very, very carefully at whether there’s a large enough addressable market.”

The fragmentation extends beyond housing. For example, in Europe, sustainability is still broadly attractive, in contrast to the U.S., where the theme doesn’t have the cachet it did several years ago.

Still, a lot can change quickly, Peck acknowledges. “We are investing over 10-, 15-year horizons. That’s a few legislative periods to bridge, and sometimes things swing in unexpected directions.”

The shifting landscape poses a challenge, but also an opportunity for a smaller investor like Kompas. “I think there’s a great space for highly focused, highly specialized, smaller funds like ours to be the first check-in and bring sweep up certain themes and certain founders,” Peck said.

House Buying Companies Empower Home Entrepreneurs in 2026

House Buying Companies Are Creating Opportunities
Deposit Photos

The rise of remote work, side hustles and home-based businesses has changed how people think about property.

For many, a home is no longer just a place to live — it’s a workspace, an investment, and a key part of financial strategy. Platforms like Home Business Magazine highlight how more people are building income streams from home and rethinking traditional business models.

At the same time, the way people sell property is evolving.

A growing number of homeowners — particularly entrepreneurs — are turning to house buying companies as a faster, more flexible alternative to traditional estate agents.

Why Speed Matters for Entrepreneurs

For business owners, time is often more valuable than squeezing out every last pound from a property sale.

Traditional sales can take months, tying up capital and creating uncertainty.

That’s a problem if you:

  • Need funds to invest in a business
  • Want to relocate quickly
  • Are restructuring your finances
  • Are managing multiple income streams

House buying companies offer a different model — one built around speed, certainty and liquidity.

Turning Property Into Working Capital

One of the biggest advantages of fast-sale companies is unlocking capital quickly.

Instead of waiting months for a buyer, sellers can often complete within weeks, freeing up money that can be reinvested into:

  • Launching a new business
  • Scaling an existing venture
  • Paying off debt
  • Diversifying income streams

For home-based entrepreneurs, this can be the difference between waiting… and moving forward.

A Shift in Mindset: From Asset to Tool

Traditionally, property has been viewed as something to hold onto and maximise.

But many modern entrepreneurs are taking a different approach:

Viewing property as a tool — not just an asset.

This means being willing to trade a small percentage of value for:

  • Faster access to cash
  • Reduced risk
  • Greater flexibility

In a fast-moving business environment, that shift in thinking is becoming more common.

How House Buying Companies Fit Into This

House buying companies simplify the selling process by:

  • Removing property chains
  • Reducing reliance on mortgage buyers
  • Streamlining transactions

Some companies, such as Springbok Properties, go a step further by offering multiple sale routes, allowing sellers to choose how quickly they want to complete.

Others focus on direct purchases or investor-backed solutions.

The Trade-Off: Speed vs Maximum Value

It’s important to be realistic.

House buying companies typically offer below full market value, reflecting the speed and convenience they provide.

But for many entrepreneurs, the calculation is different:

  • What is the opportunity cost of waiting months?
  • What could that capital be doing instead?
  • How much is certainty worth?

When viewed through a business lens, the decision often becomes clearer.

Why This Trend Is Growing

The growth of house buying companies is closely linked to wider changes in how people work and earn.

Key trends include:

  • More people working from home
  • Increased interest in side businesses
  • Greater focus on financial independence
  • A shift toward flexible, faster decision-making

As guest blogging and digital platforms show, people are also reaching wider audiences and building income streams more independently than ever.

Property is now part of that ecosystem.

Final Thoughts

House buying companies are no longer just a last resort for distressed sellers.

They are becoming a strategic option for entrepreneurs who value speed, flexibility and access to capital.

For anyone building a business from home, the ability to quickly convert property into opportunity is powerful.

Because in today’s economy, success often comes down to one thing:

How quickly you can act when the opportunity is there.

OpenAI’s Instructions to Codex Have a Weirdly Emphatic No-Creatures Policy

A document posted by OpenAI on Github as part of the open-sourcing for Codex CLI, OpenAI’s most recent flagship coding agent, contains what looks like the entire system prompt for GPT-5.5 in a coding context. And it seems to correct for the model’s past addiction to talking about whimsical creatures both natural and supernatural.

Here’s the relevant section (emphasis added):

“provide the highest-signal context instead of describing everything exhaustively.\n- Tone of your final answer must match your personality.\n- Never talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons, or other animals or creatures unless it is absolutely and unambiguously relevant to the user’s query.”

Evidently this point is so important, the developers bring it up again a bit later:

“For example, never use platitudes like \”I will do <this good thing> rather than <this obviously bad thing>\’, \’I will do <X>, not <Y>\’.\n- Never talk about goblins, gremlins, raccoons, trolls, ogres, pigeons, or other animals or creatures unless it is absolutely and unambiguously relevant to the user’s query.”

It’s not clear why this matters so much. If these were, for instance, canary words inserted into the system prompt as a way to monitor for prompt injection attacks, they would probably be more random, rather than seemingly a whole category of animals.

OpenAI did not reply to a request for comment on Tuesday night.

A Google employee named Barron Roth posted what appears to be a search of his chat logs with some of his GPT-5.5-powered Openclaw agents, showing that at least one had a history of inserting the word “goblin” into messages to the user multiple times in a single day. To my admittedly untrained eye, GPT-5.5 seems to be using it in place of a word like “thingy.”

Nick Pash, who works on Codex at OpenAI, partially confirmed that Roth had hit on the nature of the problem, writing to him on X “this is indeed one of the reasons.”

It looks like other X users also noticed that Codex had taken the goblin talk a little too far.

On Tuesday, this goblin issue became a meme, with users suggesting that some sort of “Goblin Mode,” could be toggled on and off.

Pash eventually added his own post about Goblin Mode:

If this is giving you flashbacks to a year ago when OpenAI was all about Studio Ghibli memes, you’re not alone. Some dared to assert that OpenAI might be doing all this goblin stuff for attention at what is, after all, a somewhat troubled moment for the company.

But according to another post by Pash, “it really isn’t a marketing gimmick.”
