Have you ever had that happen to you? Early on in my Christianity, I learned how to give when you have nothing to give. Giving is something that you do.

If you look up the word ‘give’ in the dictionary, there is not one place in there, that says money. That’s key. You can be a giving person without money. In fact, you don’t even need money to give. Giving is a heart attitude. It is sometimes expressed through money, but a heart attitude has no monetary value. There are simple and creative ways to give back by giving of your time, you can give of your talents, you can give of your resources, etc.

So, while in that homeless shelter, rather than give money to a church I didn’t belong to (long story), I donated my time. I would make dinner for the other women in the shelter. I would clean the bathroom, not a fun job I will fully admit, but it was a way I could give. When someone needs a ride to a place that is 2 hours away, I give of my time and gas and do not accept a payment in return. When someone is sick, I give them oils. When someone is hurting, I give of my time, listening and genuinely caring about their situation. Each Christmas, I give money to people in need. I will get a free  Turkey using coupons, and find someone in our congregation to give it to for Thanksgiving. There are so many opportunities to give that do not require money. Everyone I come in contact with, I try to help in some way or another. In all honesty, the ones that I can’t help in some way, it frustrates me. Like, I WANT to give. I WANT to help.

It’s simple, give of your time.

Then, when you have money to give, give it freely. If you only have $10 that week to give, don’t tell yourself, well, it’s not enough. It’s not worth the hassle, I might need it next week. No, give it. Give what you can, and watch God bless it and grow it. Malachi 3:10 promises He will. And as you can see by the passage above in Matthew, if you give what you can give, and you are honorable in what He has given you, He will give you more. As my income increased, so has my giving monetarily, but I still do not negate my giving of my time as well.

You see, that’s the secret!

The more you spend your money, WHATEVER it is God’s given you, whether it be 5¢ or $10,000, He will bless you with more and more and more and more AS you spend wisely what He gives. I found this to be true in my own life when I was first learning how to spend my money wisely, and God has always used it as something to get my attention. When I am prospering, I am on God’s track, when I don’t seem to be following His path, He allows me to suffer financially. It has become for me personally, a training rod.

The more God blesses, the more I obediently and reverently spend wisely. I don’t care if I have $5,000 in my savings account, I am NOT going to buy that thing that I want that is not a need. Why? Because I make myself EARN it. When I have to earn the money for the thing that I want, the thing that I want really gets put to the test. Is it REALLY worth all that to get? Sometimes not. Sometimes it is, but I work hard to get the things I want. I don’t just spend willy-nilly. I am incredibly cautious.

There’s one more piece of the puzzle.

The title of this article was chosen very carefully. You see, it says “how to give when you have nothing left to give.” The word I’d like you to notice in that title is ‘left.’ Listen, I’ll be frank, if you are giving to God last, giving Him the leftovers, you can never expect Him to give you anything more than what you give Him. He’s not the kind of God (and there’s only one God, let me be clear) that will just settle for and take the last bits of what you have left over and be satisfied with your offering. No. That’s what Cain did, remember. Cain brought the worst choice, the leftovers. Abel brought the first fruits. The top of the line best you can do.

So, when you’re making that budget, be sure to take God’s cut out first. Start with a small amount if you have to, but always pay Him first. Don’t worry about giving 10%. If we compare the Bible to now, we give more like 23%. You see, in the Bible days, the 10% was given to cover everything, because the church was the government. That 10% included taxes and everything else. If we count our taxes, government costs, church tithes now, it comes out to be 23.3%. So, don’t worry about giving 10% if you don’t have it. To some, 10% may be selfish and greedy as they have more to give, yet to others 10% is incredibly above their means and could send them into financial ruin. Just give what you can, according to what YOU are convicted in your conscience to give. Nothing more, but certainly nothing less.

You’re feeling unsure of yourself. Not sure what steps to take.

You can’t make a decision because you keep going back and forth. You can’t seem to figure things out or know what to do concretely. 

You want so bad for there to be solid ground, ground that you can anchor yourself to and believe that everything will be okay, everything IS okay, but you’re just not sure.

You have panic attacks sometimes, feeling stressed and like things are spinning, off-tilter and you’ve tried everything but just can’t seem to cling to something stable and true. And when you do, it only lasts for a minute. Recently, finances are not the same that they used to be. Everything is so much more expensive now and no matter how hard I try to save money or find new ways to save on things I need to buy, I just can’t seem to catch a break or find the answer. Suddenly, the same bills I’ve had for years have gone up double the amount and it’s a struggle. 

Companies and businesses, the world even, is constantly saying NO. They seem to not care that there are financially struggling people in the world. They seem to not care at all that people are hurting and need help. It’s all about money. And I get it, THEIR prices have gone up too and they are struggling too. We all are right now. No matter if you are rich or poor, before this massive economy switch occurred, you’re struggling now. 

I see the rich holding on more tightly to their money, afraid they’ll lose it tomorrow. Becoming more and more stingy and greedy over time, not knowing the path they are traveling on.

I see the poor, having to move in with family, living on meager means, or getting roommates in order to be able to survive. Some working even 3 jobs just to make it through. Feeling bitter that they have to pay 2x-3x the amount of money for something they paid for just a year ago at a much lesser price.

Truly, times are tough right now and if you place your identity on your money, like I sinfully did and didn’t realize it (not as an idol but as a security mechanism), then when your finances change, your whole world changes. You begin to doubt yourself and can really go down a nasty downward spiral not knowing what to do.

Suddenly, your world changes, you change, everything is changing, the rock that you once had your identity resting in, crashed. 

Maybe you place your identity in your marriage and your spouse recently left. I’ve been through that too. My now ex-husband gave me an ultimatum to give up God or he’d leave. I said I wouldn’t give up God for him or anyone else and guess what? He left the next day!

Maybe your children have left home and you’re more alone now as an empty nester and you’re struggling, not knowing what to do. Your whole life was about your kids, taking them places, investing in them, and now they’re gone, making their own decisions, creating their own lives and it’s tough to see them do that. 

On the one hand, you WANT them to succeed, you want them to do well, but there’s that part of you that IS concerned for them. Will they make it? Will they be okay? Will they remember everything you’ve taught them? Will they crash and burn or do well in their life? 

It’s a tough transition. Not because you’re trying to control them, but because you love them and want the best for them.

If you’re struggling right now, I know how you feel because I’ve been there too. I know what it’s like to feel scattered, like no one understands, no one cares, like everyone’s given up on you.

I know what it’s like to have dreams shattered, your whole life taken away from you, massive shifts in your life that change everything in the blink of an eye. 

I know what it’s like, I’ve been there, but more importantly, GOD, our redeemer and friend, knows what it’s like. 

At the cross, Jesus was rejected, despised, spit upon.

He came to help people, to tell them the truth, to save them and they crucified Him.

Imagine the very person you’re trying to save kill you.

Your friend, someone you walked with for three years (Judas), not only turn his back on you but to betray you, turn you in, have you arrested, and ultimately LEAD to your death. 

Every day, there are millions of people rejecting their Maker, rejecting God and His love for them and He wants so desperately to be part of their lives and they don’t even THINK of Him once. They don’t even give Him the time of day.

Can you imagine how that must feel?

God, being rejected day and night, and all He does is create us and want to save us. He wants to love on us, pour out his mercy and grace to us, treasure us, hold us, care for us. 

Truly, God knows, He understands what you’re doing through. He knows your pain, He sees your pain and He, like me, wants to help.

The best thing He can do for you is to get you to see things how they REALLY are, rather than our self-limiting and doubting beliefs (Philippians 4:8).

Because when we can truly make HIM our identity, and place our faith and trust in Him and Him alone, the doubts start to disappear. 

You begin to have a little bit of solid footing and then more and then more and then more. 

Over time, as we realign our thoughts and our hearts to God, He shows us the way, He helps us, He brings us back to Him and holds us, nurtures us, cares for us.

It’s a tough thing to go through for sure, but you CAN get through it. There’s hope. There’s peace. There’s getting to the other side of the tunnel and being okay, clinging so tightly to God, our Rock, to get through.

HE will lead the way, HE will help, He will get you back on track to feeling stable and secure again.

It doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a journey, but if you start now, you’ll get there faster! 

Listen, you’re not alone. Many people right now are facing and experiencing the same exact thing you are. Many more have been through this and have gotten to the other side. There’s hope! There’s always hope. 🦋

Know that it’s not wrong how you’re feeling. It’s not sin to doubt, it becomes sin to STAY in doubt because it leads to other sins like bitterness, rebellion, pride, etc.). You are not rebellious, you’re truly seeking answers. Call on God all the more and don’t stop (Luke 11:5-13), let Him show you the way to peace again. ❤️

It’s normal to doubt yourself at times, but if you’re constantly doubting yourself to the point where it’s impacting your daily life, this can be a never-ending cycle that leaves you feeling paralyzed.

Be encouraged with these prayers…

Day 1: Pray to the Lord to give you a confident heart

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.” – Proverbs 3:5

God wants you to trust Him with every part of your life- even the things that you don’t understand. When you’re feeling doubtful, it’s easy to rely on your own understanding and what you think is best or to see the situation from your angle. But God sees the bigger picture, He knows all and sees all and He knows what’s best for you. So instead of doubting yourself and looking at things from an earthly perspective, ask God to give you a confident heart that trusts in Him. Ask Him to see it from His angle so that you can further trust Him and move forward.

Day 2: Pray to know your worth in Christ

“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” – 1 Peter 2:9

You are precious to God and He has hand-picked you for His purpose. When self-doubt tries to creep in, remind yourself of how God sees you and not how others see you. You are His chosen one, set apart for His good works.

Day 3: Pray to have hope in the midst of your doubt

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” – Romans 15:13

When self-doubt tries to take over, it’s easy to lose hope. But God is the God of hope and He wants you to experience joy and peace. So instead of succumbing to your doubts, pray that God would fill you with hope and the strength needed to endure (Isaiah 40:29).

Day 4: Pray for the Lord to surround you with people who will build you up

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.“ – Hebrews 10:24-25

It’s important to surround yourself with people who will lift you up and encourage you. When you’re feeling doubtful, these people can help remind you of who you are in Christ. So instead of isolating yourself, pray that the Lord would surround you with people who will build you up.

Day 5: Pray to be freed from comparison-itis

“Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.” – 2 Corinthians 10:12

Comparison is the thief of joy, and it can be a never-ending cycle when you’re constantly doubting yourself. So instead of comparing yourself to others, pray to be freed from comparison. Remember that you were uniquely created for His purpose and His plan. There is no one like you and there never will be. You are joyfully and pleasurably made by God!

Day 6: Pray for wisdom in decision-making

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” – James 1:5

Self-doubt can make it hard to make decisions. You feel like you’re spinning out of control and uneasy about your circumstances. But when you’re feeling doubtful, pray for wisdom. God wants to give you wisdom and He will do so generously.

Day 7: Pray to be content with who you are

“But godliness with contentment is great gain…” – 1 Timothy 6:6

One of the biggest lies that self-doubt tells us is that we’re not enough. We’re not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, etc. But the truth is that we are exactly who God created us to be – and He doesn’t make mistakes. When you start to doubt yourself, pray that God would help you to be content with who He made you to be, exactly as you are. Because you’re pretty wonderful! ❤️

Day 8: Pray to really know that your value is not based on your accomplishments

“For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well...” – Psalm 139:13-14

The world wants to tell you that you’re great if you make a lot of money or if you have a lot of certain things. They place more value on beauty, popularity, and things seen with the eye. But your value is not based on your accomplishments or what others may think of you. You are fearfully and wonderfully made, and that will never change. So when self-doubt tries to tell you that you’re not good enough, remind yourself of your true value and where it comes from.

Day 9: Pray for a renewed mind

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2

A lot of self-doubt we experience comes from the lies that we believe about ourselves. Things we’ve been told by others, things we tell ourselves, but we can renew our minds by filling our hearts with truth. So instead of believing the lies of the enemy, pray for a renewed mind.

Day 10: Pray to the Lord to help you overcome your insecurities

“He said, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge, my savior; you save me from violence.“ – 2 Samuel 22:2-3

Insecurity is at the root of self-doubt, but we can take refuge in the Lord. He is our rock, our fortress, and our deliverer. So instead of doubting yourself, pray to the Lord for help in overcoming your insecurities. Ask God to break down all the walls and give you freedom. Because the truth is, insecurities are like chains on your wrists. You carry them with you wherever you might go and they weigh you down over time (Psalm 55:22).

Day 11: Pray to trust that God has a good plan for your life

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11

When we doubt ourselves, it’s usually because we don’t feel like we measure up. But God has a good plan for your life, and He wants you to prosper. So instead of doubting yourself, pray that you would trust God’s plan for your life, submitting to it wholeheartedly.

Day 12: Pray for courage to step out in faith

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6

When we’re doubting ourselves, it’s easy to stay within our own comfort zone, but God is calling us to step out in faith. So instead of staying where it’s safe, pray for the courage to take a leap of faith, to get out there and do what He’s called you to do.

Day 13: Pray to find your identity in Christ alone

“But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing.” – James 1:25

A lot of self-doubts come from trying to find our identity in the wrong things and these things can become idols to us. But when we find our identity in Christ, we will be blessed in what we do. So instead of looking to the world for validation, pray that you would find your identity in Christ alone.

Day 14: Pray for God’s help in learning to love yourself

“And now faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” – 1 Corinthians 13:13

One of the best ways to overcome self-doubt is to learn to love yourself. But it’s not always easy to do. Maybe you feel guilt, shame, or are in the midst of great suffering. Instead of trying to do it on your own, pray that God would help you to love yourself, forgive yourself, and to be able to move on in faith and full freedom.

Day 15: Pray to the Lord to give you wisdom and peace to know how to deal with your doubts

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. ⁶ But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.“ – James 1:5-6

When we’re doubting ourselves, it can be hard to know what to do, but the Lord will give us wisdom if we ask for it. So instead of trying to figure it out on your own, pray for wisdom, grace, mercy, and peace from the Lord (John 14:27). 

Day 16: Pray to be patient with yourself as you learn and grow

“Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.“ – James 5:7

When we’re trying to overcome self-doubt, it’s important to be patient with ourselves. We’re not going to become confident in the Lord overnight. So instead of getting discouraged, pray for patience as you learn and grow and set your affections on God and His precepts. In essence, show yourself grace.

Day 17: Pray that God would give you a positive self-image

“Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.” – Philippians 2:4

One of the best ways to overcome self-doubt is to have a positive self-image, but it’s not always easy to do (usually because of day 5). Instead of trying to do it on your own, pray that God would help you to see yourself the way that He sees you. To align your heart, your thoughts, and your motives up to Him and His perfect will.

Day 18: Pray for strength to keep going when you feel like giving up

“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9

When we’re doubting ourselves, it’s easy to feel like giving up. But God is with us, and He will give us the strength to keep going. So instead of quitting, pray for the strength to keep going, knowing that His power, love, mercy, grace, and longsuffering is being revealed in your situation to others. They see Him taking care of you and working in the circumstance and give Him glory.

Day 19: Pray to be sensitive to the Lord’s leading in your life

“And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.“ – Psalm 9:10

When we’re trying to overcome self-doubt, it’s important to be sensitive to the Lord’s leading. We can’t do it on our own (John 15:5). So instead of trying to figure it out on your own, cry out to Him to help and pray for guidance from the Lord. Submit to Him and ask Him to show you His ways. He will do it!

Day 20: Pray that you would be open to His correction and discipline

“My son, do not despise the Lord‘s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.“ – Proverbs 3:11-12

One of the best ways to overcome self-doubt is to be open to God’s correction and discipline. It’s not always easy to do, but it’s essential for growth. So instead of resisting His correction, pray that you would be open to it, that you would humbly submit to it, in order to get through the circumstance you’re in, because the truth is, things won’t change until you get on the right path with God, until you have learned what He wants you to learn. If you are already on His path, ask Him to confirm it to you so that you know for certain that it’s not anything He’s trying to teach you that you have to learn.

Day 21: Pray that the Lord will help you find joy in the midst of your struggles

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.“ – James 1:2-4

When we’re going through trials, it’s important to remember that the Lord is with us all the more (Psalm 34:18). He will help us through the situation and to find joy in the midst of our roughest battles when we focus on Him and not our situation. Instead of getting discouraged today, pray for joy in the midst of your trials. Pray that God give you true peace and delight in Him and that you are able to make it through this tough time as a beacon of light and hope to all onlookers.

Day 22: Pray for God to hold you up when things are hard

“though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand.” – Psalm 37:24

When things are tough, it’s easy to want to throw in the towel and just give up, feeling like there’s nothing we can do to change our situation. There seems to be no possible way to get through it, no windows, no doors, just hopelessness. But God is with us, and He will help us through. He promises us this in His Word (Hebrews 13:5, Matthew 7:9-11). Instead of quitting and walking away, pray for the strength to keep going. Pray for God to hold you up, to carry you through.

Day 23: Pray to learn to lean on God instead of yourself

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?” – Matthew 6:25

One of the best ways to overcome self-doubt is to learn to lean on God instead of yourself. We can’t do it on our own (John 15:5), so instead of trying to figure it out on your own, pray for guidance from the Lord. Pray that He will make you as strong as a rock, that you may endure this hardship and lean on Him to carry you through. He will surely do it! 

Day 24: Pray to surrender to God’s will for your life

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.“ – Proverbs 16:3

When we’re trying to overcome self-doubt and going back and forth in our minds, it’s important to surrender to God’s will for our lives. In our hearts and minds, we need to want His will, His desires, His outcome, whatever they may be. The reason you may be doubting yourself right now is because you’re trying to control the situation to the outcome you want it to be, and that’s only natural. But we must fight that and place our faith and hope in Jesus, knowing that He loves us so much that whatever comes our way, whether good or bad, it’s for our good and His great glory. Trust in Him today and submit to HIS plan for your life. 

Day 25: Pray to trust in God’s timing

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” – Ecclesiastes 3:11

One of the hardest things about self-doubt is not knowing what the future holds. It can become scary to think about the “what if’s” in life, but we can trust that God has a plan for us (Jeremiah 29:11), and His timing is perfect. Rather than worrying about the future, pray that you would trust in God’s timing and plan.

Day 26: Pray to have hope in the midst of your struggles

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” – Romans 15:13

When we’re going through tough times, especially for a long period of time, we can become weary and drained. Our hope in God and His purposes for us starts to wane. We must continually strive to hold onto our hope (Isaiah 40:31) for our hope placed in Jesus Christ is never wrong and it will never fail us (Romans 5:5). Today, call out to Jesus and pray for increased hope in the midst of your trials.

Day 27: Pray that the Lord will give you peace in times of uncertainty

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.“ – Philippians 4:6-7

When we’re feeling doubtful, it’s easy to start worrying about what might happen, but we can trust that God is in full control. He is sovereign over everything. Rather than worrying, pray for peace in times of uncertainty, ask Him to give you a steadfast confidence in Him and His purposes in order that you might please Him in this trial you’re facing.

Day 28: Pray to have faith when you feel like you’re failing

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” – Philippians 4:13

When we’re struggling with self-doubt, it’s easy to feel like we’re failing. But we can trust that God is with us (Deuteronomy 31:8). He leads the way and is with us all through out the journey, so instead of feeling discouraged, pray for faith to keep going (Mark 9:24). Ask Him to strengthen you and your faith in Him and in His sovereignty. 

Day 29: Pray to trust God even when you don’t understand His ways

“Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.“ – 1 Peter 5:7

When we’re struggling with self-doubt, it’s often because we don’t understand what God is doing or where He is taking us. But we can trust that He knows exactly what He’s doing. His plans and purposes were created before the foundations of the earth, so while you can’t trust in your circumstances, you CAN trust in the One who HOLDS your circumstances! Instead of trying to figure it out on your own, pray for trust in the Lord. Ask Him to reveal His purposes to you, ask Him where He’s leading you, what He’s working on in your life, ask for wisdom (James 1:5-8).

Day 30: Pray that you to be willing to step out in faith

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” – Hebrews 11:1

When we’re struggling with self-doubt, it’s often because we’re afraid to take a leap of faith. But we can trust that God will catch us when we fall. He knew it was coming; it was no surprise to Him and He’s got a plan to take care of it. So instead of staying where it’s safe and leaning on your OWN understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6), pray for the courage to step out in faith.

You are not alone in your doubts and fears. The Lord is with you, and He will help you through this difficult time. Take some time every day to pray for guidance, and ask Him to help you believe in yourself again.
