Here’s five great immersive sims Microsoft didn’t just cancel

The Perfect Dark reboot looked like an excellent addition to the immersive sim genre. Based on Microsoft’s previous shuttering of Arkane Austin, I can only assume that this made Phil Spencer very angry. “Why can I lift massive crates but only fit one rifle in my inventory!”, roared Spencer. Subsequently, both the reboot and studio The Initiative were axed this week by Microsoft as part of their ongoing efforts to ensure their legacy going forward is one of destroying livelihoods, participating in what a UN rapporteur describes as an “economy of genocide”, and forcing Copilot inside that little plastic bit at the end of your shoelaces.

Anyway, here’s a few great immersive sims from the Steam Summer Sale to soothe the bastard wound of Perfect Dark’s cancellation. The bastard wounds inflicted on everything good and real by stakeholder capitalism, I cannot help with. Only Prey 2 could fix that. None of these are especially deep cuts, so do let me know if I’ve missed out anything spectacular.

Ctrl Alt Ego is 55% at £7/$9/€8.50. You play as a disembodied presence, occupying devices to problem solve. It’s the strangest and most creative game on a list filled with them.

Skin Deep is 20% off at £12.50/$16/€15. “A playful and inventive immersive sim, with a few rough edges that can’t prevent plentiful laughs”, reckoned Brendy.

Filcher is 20% off at £6/$8/€7. It’s a noir take on classic Thief.

Psycho Patrol R is 20% off at £27/$32/€31. “Hallucinogenic hypercapitalist critique wrapped in a kevlar jacket of impenetrable irony”, reckoned Brendy, early access reviewishly.

Gloomwood is 25% off at £12.50/$14/€14.50. It’s in our list of best immersive sims for a reason. (The reason is Brendy put it there.)

Bonus mentions: Dread Delusion veers a bit toward the RPG side, but I’m counting it. 20% off. Similarly, Baldur’s Gate 3 is 20% off. Yes, it counts! Deep State isn’t out yet, but I’ve seen it described as “Deus Ex meets Goldeneye”, so in it goes. Ditto Brush Burial 2, but with dominatrix takedowns. These weren’t in Goldeneye, although I suppose you could describe escorting Natalya as a sort of deeply unfulfilling BDSM. Project Silverfish just launched in early access with a 16% discount, and has a demo.

Best of luck to all affected by Microsoft’s slashing and burning. Seems exceptionally callous and short-sighted from where I’m standing, though I am just a simple country lawyer with no understanding to how these big brain business geniuses operate.

OnePlus is in hot water for something that all of our smartphones do

U.S. Representatives John Moolenaar (R, MI) and Raja Krishnamoorthi (D, IL) have convinced the U.S. Commerce Department to look into phone maker OnePlus after alleging the devices are collecting user information “without explicit user consent.”

It’s alleged that a commercial analysis indicates potential unwanted data collection by OnePlus devices, which is then sent to China-owned servers.

Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders Gets Some New Tricks up its Sleeve

Summary

  • Huge update comes to Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders today.
  • New Trick Mode and the return of the beloved Free Ride Mode.
  • Wide range of new accessibility features.

After opening the skiing season of the Lonely Mountains in January with Xbox Game Pass, more than one million riders have already hit the snowy slopes. But our team from Megagon Industries isn’t done yet. Our newest Freestyle update released today not only introduces two new game modes with more than 100 new challenges to the game but also several accessibility improvements. Check out what’s in store.

Overcome new challenges in the new Trick Mode! Ride in style, ramp up points, and pull off as many awesome flips, spins and grabs as you can on your way down the slopes. To achieve the highest score, you need to look at the mountains from a fresh perspective. Your best speedrunning strategy might not be the best route to jump to the top of the leaderboard.

The new update also brings back the belovedFree Ride Mode from Lonely Mountains: Downhill to the snowy peaks of Lonely Mountains: Snow Riders. Free Ride is the ultimate challenge to all speedrunners. Not limited by any checkpoints you can freely explore the mountains and hunt for the ultimate path down to the finish line. However, be cautious, as no checkpoints also means that every crash will send you back to the start.

Both modes come with full leaderboard support and new achievements. The update also addresses one of the loudest asks from the community, as you can now reach the highest player level without the need to participate in multiplayer matches.

In addition to the new game modes, we’re also adding a wide range of accessibility features!

  • You can now turn on auto-break or or auto-accelerate allowing you to play the game with only one trigger.
  • Break, accelerate or crouch can now also be set to toggle instead of the need to hold the buttons allowing you to play the game without the need to hold a button constantly over time.
  • You can now individually map the buttons and keyboard keys to your own liking.
  • You can now play with mouse and keyboard combined.

We hope that the new Freestyle update will allow a much wider audience to enjoy the game and experience the Lonely Mountains.

We wish you all a great time with the new additions, and the whole team is looking forward to watching your best trick videos and crazy free-ride speedruns!

When viewing a Visual Studio Git commit, how to open the local copy of a file?

When viewing a Git commit in Visual Studio (I’m currently using 2017), many times per day I wish to open the local copy of a file that was edited in a commit, but there isn’t a built in option (that I know of) that can do this. Here are the available options when viewing a commit:

enter image description here

Note that the “Open” option opens a read-only copy of the file as it looked in the commit. I would like to open the current version of that file in my checked out branch (usually so I can make edits based on PR suggestions). Today what I do is: switch over to Solution Explorer, type the filename into the search box, wait for it to find it, and then open the file. But this is slow and cumbersome to do hundreds of times per day. I’m thinking there should be another option next to “Open” like “Open Local Copy”.

Is there a way to do this in VS, or using an existing plugin?

Samsung’s Massive Frame TV Is Down 30% and Yes, It Still Doubles as Art

You don’t need to hang a painting when your TV already looks like one. The Samsung 85-Inch Class Frame Series QLED TV is designed to disappear into your space when it’s off and completely take over when it’s on. For Early Prime Day, it’s down to $2,997.99, which is 30% off a display that blends tech with design in a way that’s actually impressive.

This TV delivers true 4K resolution powered by Quantum HDR, which sharpens details and brings colors forward without making them feel overcooked. You get Samsung’s anti-reflection tech too, so even in rooms with big windows or overhead lights, the picture stays clear and punchy. The 85-inch screen size turns your living room into a theater and still manages to look clean thanks to a slim bezel and flush wall mounting.

What makes this model stand out is Art Mode. When you’re not watching, the screen turns into a digital canvas that displays classic art, personal photos, or curated visuals. It comes with a customizable frame so you can match your décor, and it’s smart enough to adjust brightness and temperature to blend in with the room. It’s a rare case where a giant screen doesn’t have to dominate the space.

With this TV, you also get Dolby Atmos for immersive audio, a built-in voice assistant, and access to Samsung’s Smart Hub, which makes navigating streaming services fast and simple. Multiple HDMI inputs and a Slim Fit wall mount make it easy to set up, whether you’re building a full entertainment center or just trying to keep things tidy. This TV was made for people who want their tech to perform and look good doing it.

At $2,997.99, the Samsung 85-Inch Frame Series QLED TV brings size, quality, and actual style to your wall. It’s one of the few TVs that feels as much like a design choice as a tech upgrade.

Google revamps Android’s permission dialogs for a sleeker design

android 16 qpr beta dialog box design refresh

Tushar Mehta / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Google has redesigned the permissions dialogs that appear in Android.
  • This change appears following the June Google Play system update when applied to the latest Android 16 QPR Beta 2.1.
  • Google has dropped the older design in favor of slimmer buttons and better readability.

Even though Google first released a beta for Android 16 last year, its biggest design change didn’t start rolling out until the final beta, just weeks before the final release. With this, Android received an entirely revamped quick settings menu and updated volume sliders, both of which are now widely available on supported Pixel devices running the stable Android 16 update.

However, with subsequent updates, Google is testing minor tweaks to the interface, and we came across one more. Following the June Google Play system update that rolled out earlier this week, we spotted another minor change: the new permissions dialog box. However, the change only appears on devices running the Android 16 QPR beta 2.1 update that was released last week.

The permissions dialog box now has more widely spaced buttons for various options. Instead of a light background earlier, these buttons now use darker colors with white text, allowing richer contrast and, therefore, better readability.

The buttons in the refreshed permissions dialog also feature more rounded corners to align with the other buttons and widgets in Android that have been redesigned in recent months. Below is a side-by-side comparison between the older and the new designs of the permission dialog:

The change is expected to be triggered by the latest Google Play system update, which may need to be triggered manually. If you are running the latest beta and want it, you can head over to Settings > System > Software updates and tap Google Play system update. Once the latest Play system update is installed, you will be prompted to restart your Pixel device, and doing so should enable the new permissions dialog across the system.

Harness the elements in fierce real-time battles while upgrading a crew of fantasy creatures as you search for your family. Wartorn features a systemic, emergent gameplay system using the elements of fire, water, tar, plant, and lightning. Strategically choose your squads to master the elements and environment against hordes of enemies. Water extinguishes fire, tar amplifies fire, electricity crackles across the ranks in wet conditions, and water can heal plant-based units. And that’s just scratching the surface! Ancient Dungeon

Each squad adds new strategic options to your caravan through their different characteristics and unique abilities. Mix and match what squads you bring into battle to truly master a run. Battlefield positioning, squad combos, and skillful usage of abilities can win the day, but be careful, losses cost you morale, and if your caravan loses hope it’s game over. The game’s blend of strategic and roguelite elements offer deep replayability, with each run feeling fresh thanks to emergent gameplay, dynamic squad management, and unpredictable narrative events that can save your struggling band or cost them their lives.

Features and System Requirements:
