In the years my ex-husband was home, we moved over 30 times. You most likely don’t know anyone else that can pack a Uhaul as good as me (if it didn’t fit, I didn’t get to keep it!) nor do you know someone who can put up a home as quick (because I’ve literally done it SO many times!)

Moving is hard and overwhelming. It’s a lot of work, you get tired, it’s physically and emotionally draining. Then you get to the new house, look around at all your stuff and have NO IDEA where to put it all. If you are planning your next move, these tips and strategies will drastically help you know exactly how to unpack a house in two days! 

How to Unpack a House in Two Days

The very first thing you want to do is…

Layout furniture before you move

You have to go to the new house before you move, measure, and figure out where all your big furniture is going to go. Where will you put the couches? Where will the entertainment center fit? On what wall do you want your headboard for your bed? Where will the dresser go?

Related: 

Don’t forget the garage. Where will your garage pantries go? Your shelves? Your lawn equipment, snow shovels, bikes, kids cars?

The more you have planned where it will go BEFORE you move, the EASIER it is ONCE you move.

If you want to put things away super quick after you move, plan out everything. On this move that I just made, I already had a lot lined up where it was all going to go, down to the dishes, bowls, plates, cups, silverware, etc.

You absolutely will get overwhelmed with decisions after you move, so the more decisions you’ve already made, the less stressed YOU will feel and the faster you can put it up, because you already know where it goes!

Take pictures before you pack

Over the years, there have been times where I’ve really needed to remember where I had certain things and I can’t.

A good example is my garage pantries. I have everything in a certain order, so that I know where everything is.

Taking a picture of it BEFORE you pack it with your phone, will greatly help you when you want to put everything back! This one tip alone has helped me SO many times and helps me put things back where they belong super quick!

Refrain yourself from organizing

It’s been three days since I’ve moved at the time that I’m writing this and everything is put up, including my garage. Is everything organized? No!

Here’s the trick. I KNOW that things will move. I had an end table in one spot, and it’s just more convenient in the office than the living room. So, I moved it. I put my glasses in one cabinet, but I find myself hoovering over another cabinet to get them — I will move them!

You don’t have to be set in stone on where things are. Throw all your food in the pantry. Don’t worry about organizing it. Just get all those dishes, cups, glasses, silverware, pots, and pans put up in SOME cabinet or drawer where you think they can fit in best. You can fiddle around with the layout of all that later when you’re settled in and find yourself drawn to one area more than another. It’ll all start coming together.

What you DON’T want to do, is have everything in boxes. You’ll never find ANYTHING like that. Seriously!

Then, as time goes on, start organizing the things how you want them, but at least you’ll know where everything is!!!

Do not pack early

I know this must sound so incredibly crazy, but I NEVER pack anything, at all, before 3 days before I move. Listen, even as a single mom, I can pack my whole house in that time-frame, and so can you.

You don’t want to pack early for several reasons…

1) You’ll forget which box you put something in.

2) You’ll need something you packed and never be able to find it. You’ll go out and buy one to replace it, wasting money and time.

3) You’ll pack wrong items with wrong items. There have been many times where I’ll start filling up a box and because I’ve packed early, can’t finish packing the room, so I go on to somewhere else. Then, the boxes are filled with a mish-mash of everything and nothing makes sense. I’ll lose something because I put that can opener with my kids stuff. LOL. I’ll end up buying a can opener because I can’t find the one and have no idea where it’s at.

Speaking of which…

Don’t let anyone else help you pack

Again, this may sound crazy, but goes along with the logic that YOU need to remember where everything is. Every time I’ve had helpers to pack, I’ve lost things, not known where they are and it’s just a mess. With good intentions, it’s literally sabotaging you.

Note: The only exception is if that same person is helping you put the same boxes they packed away in the new house.

Pack the things yourself, so you know where everything is.

Never take clothes off of hangers

A little known trick is that if you take about 10 articles of your clothing with the hangers in them and fold them in half, only the very middle clothing piece will even have a chance to get wrinkled.

I can get about 20-30 clothes in a 13-gallon trash bag and call it good. At the new house, throw the few wrinkled clothes in the dryer with a wet washcloth and bada-bing-bada-boom, you’re done! If you’re me, you just hang them up and they get the wrinkles out all by themselves…most of the time. Yeah, I’m not an ironer. 🙂

Do this with everyone’s clothes. Seriously, it saves SO much time.

The only thing I would say about this one, is that if you have stairs, roll the bags down the stairs, don’t throw them. It’s much easier to NOT have broken hangers. We always liked to have a soft landing for them like a pillow or something and they all rolled down like a snowball. This will help pack the Uhaul much faster and you will save some energy!

Label your boxes well

For pete’s sake, label those boxes. If you pack misc. items all together, make a list on the box lid. I’ve listed like 10 items on the outside of a box before. You want to know where everything is quickly!

If you’re using a moving company however (especially long distance), it may not be the wisest idea to list valuables on the box covers. You could use a spreadsheet and number the boxes instead. Be sure to always pack your valuables with YOU in YOUR car and not in a moving van. Things that are easily broken like a TV, I always pack in my car too and not in a moving van.

Pack a suitcase

One of the BIGGEST TIPS you need to know is to pack a suitcase for your entire family for 5 days. All clothes, socks, undies, toothbrush, toothpaste, shower stuff, hairbrush, etc. Anything you’d pack to take on a trip or vacation, have it all there in suitcases.

Don’t forget pets! They need a zipper baggy of food for 5 days too, along with two bowls, one for water and one for food. Anything else they may need, like a bed, leash, etc. have them all packed too.

This will ensure that you’re not scrambling after you move to get your kids to school on time or to bed at a decent hour.

Everything is there in the suitcases and you have FIVE days to unpack and find things! This one tip will literally change your moving experience and I can’t recommend any other tip higher than this one! It’s absolutely crucial!

Speaking of suitcases…

Super awesome packing tricks I’ve picked up along the years:

Pack your most fragile/important stuff in suitcases. Things like that $1k vase your great grandma left you. Wrap it up super well with bubble wrap of course, but I always pack my most fragile stuff in suitcases, not boxes. They tend to be taken care of better in transport and you can even put the suitcases in the car with you instead of in the moving van. 

Every single zipper in that suitcase can be utilized for important stuff. Important papers, jewelry you don’t want knocked around, use all the space in that thing and wrap things well. 

Use space saver bags, but if you’re out, use a garbage bag, put a vacuum hose in it and as long as they bag doesn’t have any holes, it’ll keep the air out and save space for a day or two (not a permanent solution).

Wrap your glass cups in clean socks. Just put the socks over your glasses and you’re saving space and it’s a much more Earth-friendly moving system! 🙂 

When packing plates, get creative. You can use newspaper, paper towel, coffee filters, magazines, or even clothes. Think about your daughters clean shirts. They could easily go in between the dishes. One shirt can wrap 2 plates. Be creative when packing so you’re saving space. My ex-husband had a rule, whatever didn’t fit in the moving truck, didn’t go. I lost a lot of stuff that way and started getting super creative to get it all to fit!!! 🙂 

To save space in the kitchen, put spices in stock pots. Fill up each and every thing you can to save as much space. Also, sometimes, I didn’t put stock pots and pots/pans in boxes at all. They won’t break, so you can put them in bags and get away with it. Maybe not the glass lids, but the actual pans you can.

Your big screen TV. Put this in a car, not the moving van and cover it well with one of your kids blankets. No need to buy the packing blankets when you have some already. 🙂 

If you don’t have a knife block, you can put knives in an oven mitt and label it knives. Make sure everyone in your home knows the knives are in there, for safety and put it with other kitchen stuff or in your designated “important stuff” suitcase. 

Here’s one of my favorite tricks! Everyone takes their clothes OFF the hangers to move them. They put them in boxes or bags but when you unpack those clothes, they are all gonna be wrinkled!!! Wanna avoid that? Fold your clothes in a big bunch (think: 10-20 so it’s not a crease) in half and put inside garbage bags. When you have stairs, you can literally throw those down and not have to climb so much stairs. Just make sure there’s no one down there as you throw them down. 🙂

You WILL break a few hangers. Lost: 50¢ to save you a good 15 mins going up and down those stairs for all your clothes. Worth it! 🙂 Best of all, they will NOT get wrinkled that way. Just be sure if you throw them down, you are using quality bags. The cheap-o bags will split as you drop them. 

Avoid boxes from falling out from the bottom. When collecting boxes (from shipments you get, etc.), leave the boxes taped. It’ll save you on supplies and be sturdier in the move. Double tape all boxes that you’ll put heavy stuff in it. And here’s the thing…most people tape the box again at the seam. When double taping it, make a cross symbol. Go vertically and horizontally. It’ll hold up better. Be sure not to overstuff boxes with heavy things, like books. Use smaller boxes for those kinds of things. 

Likewise, if you have too heavy of furniture, consider selling it on Craigslist or Facebook groups before you move. Replace it when you get there with a gently used piece of furniture. It’s a great excuse to “buy something new” too. 😉 Something that matches your new decor better. 

To keep mirrors from breaking in a move, here’s a cool trick. Tape with masking tape each corner to corner (ONE piece of tape) diagonally and press the tape down good. Then tape side to side and vertically in the middle. You should have 4 pieces of tape running through the mirror. This will help the glass NOT break, but if it is bad and it does break, it will keep all the shards together instead of bitty pieces everywhere. 

Zipper bags are your best friend. Blow them up and seal for an instant air pouch protector as needed. 

Moving in the winter? Be sure to have someone snow shovel the driveway and put salt down if needed. Don’t try to move with snow on the ground. You can slip and fall. Also, wear snow boots in such cases and they have traction on the bottom of the shoes to help. 

Moving with pets? I like to use a wire pet crate and put it in the back of the SUV for our dog. It gives him plenty of room and he has his soft bed, a rawhide, and a couple toys so he’s comfortable. Be sure to keep a leash, a bowl for water (and a couple water bottles), plus treats, a food bowl, and a little zipper bag of food as needed that you can easily access. Animals need breaks too! 🙂

First, you’re in shock. You have no idea what’s happening or why. You have no idea what you’ll do if you’re divorced. You have no idea who you’ll be or what will happen.

Everything seems uncertain and your world starts to spin. You want to talk to him, but usually, at that point, he’s not wanting to spill his guts, he just wants out and that’s tough. 

Let’s walk through it one step at a time, together! 🙂

My Husband Wants a Divorce, I Don’t Know What To Do

First off, there’s still hope…

Hope

If your husband has come to you and told you he wants a divorce, SOMEtimes that can mean that he wants to work things out with you. 

If there was no hope of him wanting the marriage, you would have just woken up one morning and all his stuff would’ve been gone. Or he’d leave in the day when you’re out with your friends and you’d not know it. 

Usually, people who don’t want to work things out or want to talk about anything, just leave. No explanation, just, “I’m gone”, type of thing. That’s what happened to me. 

My ex-husband left a couple of times but one of the times he abandoned us was me just waking up to a note that said, “I still love her. I’m going back to her.” Meaning…his affair.

At that point, there’s no reaching them because they are gone. You can’t work it out, because they are not listening. You can’t talk because they won’t answer the phone. There’s not a whole lot you can do except to try to piece your life back together, which is possible. I’ve done it. 🙂 But it’s tough. I’m not going to lie to you…it’s tough.

If he does just pick up and leave, there’s also still hope. Maybe you guys will have separate time for a while, maybe there’s no affair, and you guys get back together later. Maybe even you get fully divorced and then meet a few years later after everything is cooled off and remarry. 

Really, the final death coffin is up to you. 

For me, my ex-husband knew my boundaries. I told him that if he ever had kids with someone else, we would never EVER get back together. I didn’t want to have to deal with a life with kids coming and going and having stepfamilies and all that. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, I know there can be a great blessing in a situation like that, I’m just saying that for me personally, I never wanted to deal with that. It’s a boundary for me. I like things to be simple.

I don’t know that I could treat his kids from another marriage kindly and really be their mom. I would have resentment in my heart toward them and treat our kids better than his other kids. It would be a place of sin in my own life, not treating others how God would want me to and so for me, it’s just something that was a final straw. 

My ex-husband DID end up having kids with multiple women along the way and the divorce was finalized and so it was over. There was no hope there. Really, you are the only one that can determine if there is still hope there or not.

Even if your husband has a physical affair with someone, the Bible DOES condone divorce in such cases (sex = marriage in God’s eyes; see Adam and Eve – there was no Pastor to marry them. No paper certificate and yet they were married). 

However, the Bible doesn’t COMMAND you to get a divorce if there is an affair. God doesn’t say, “Okay, well he had an affair so you HAVE to divorce.” You don’t. It’s completely, 100% up to you. Don’t let anyone tell you it’s not. It’s YOUR decision and you answer ONLY to God for that decision.

In such a case like this, there is no right and wrong. 

It’s not MORE right that you take him back and it’s not more wrong you don’t. It’s not wrong you take him back and right you don’t. Either way, there is no right and wrong with God. You are free to do as you please. It is your decision and there is no command here. 

Legalists will try to INSERT a command here. They will try to say you’re more Biblical if you take him back. But I did that and for me, it was a mistake. We just played ring around the rosies and he cheated many more times, all before the divorce was final. 

Does that mean what happened to me, will happen to you? 

No! And that’s the point. EVERY single situation is different. Every person is different. You cannot know the outcome and so, it is entirely up to you what you do.

The same goes with him abandoning you. Once he’s abandoned you, you do not have to take him back either. You can, or you don’t have to. It’s up to you, but let’s say, he just leaves your family and there’s no affair. He just leaves. 

Same thing here. He leaves and/or he has an affair. Either way, you are free to do as you please. 

How MUCH time he’s left is also up to you and I think it’s a heart matter. 

If he moves out and wants to come back, it’s totally your call. There’s no right and wrong here in this situation. It’s just a matter of your heart and what you want to do before the Lord.

God’s Word and Being Educated

If at all possible, if he is still living with you and he’s not had a PHYSICAL affair, you should do absolutely everything in your power to remain together. Would he consider going to couple’s counseling? Is he open to trying to make it work?

Generally, men who want to divorce, are looking for something to change. Does the situation need to change? Are you guys always fighting about finances? Like, what’s the problem he’s having? If you’re able to determine it, it’s possible that you can save your marriage and work things out. 

You should want and try your best to work things out with your spouse. While you CAN get divorced under certain circumstances according to the Bible (abandonment or affair), you should always want to work things out. 

Sometimes I hear women say they are so sick of the fighting and just want to get divorced. They think that they will have peace if they are divorced. I can tell you from experience, that’s never the case. While you may very well get peace in one way, you’ll have problems in another area. 

Courts.

Lawyers.

His new woman.

His new children. 

Them making your life miserable.

HIM making your life miserable.

Sometimes no child support. 

No one to help you around the house, making your life suddenly harder. 

No one to help with the kids. 

Loneliness. If you thought you were lonely before, after the divorce, you’ll be even MORE lonely and that leads to temptation and sin – sleeping with someone else outside of marriage or living with another man, which leads to sleeping with him. 

If you and your husband fight, you’ll STILL fight after the divorce, it’ll just usually get UGLIER. Less frequent, but still fighting. 

You don’t get out of all the problems you’re facing now and if you do, you are just trading them for a new set of problems. 

Life is never problem-free. If it were, we wouldn’t need Heaven. 

So decide your boundaries. Decide what you want to do, and PRAY a LOT (!!) for God to lead you and guide you in this troublesome time. 

Try to get to the root of things

WHY does he want to divorce?

What does he want to be changed?

Be completely open to talk and ONLY listen.

If he decides to tell you why he wants a divorce, you should not try to solve the problem that day. You should focus ONLY on LISTENING to him. 

He needs to know that you care enough to listen to what he has to say. So listen intently.

Ask him to give you a couple of days to really process through this. Ask him if he’s willing to work things out with you. But listening to him is the first step. 

Listen to him with an open mind, that’s super key too. He needs to feel like you want to make him happy and that you care about him. That you’re not throwing in the towel if you want to save your marriage, because if YOU throw in the towel, he will most likely throw it in for sure!

Seeking Peace

If you’ve tried to work everything out with him and he just refuses, the absolute best advice I can give you is to keep everything 100% amiable. 

Not only for the sake of the kids, you don’t want to make them feel like they have to choose (hint: they love you BOTH!) but also because if you are NOT polite and amiable, you WILL 5,000% open up a can of worms that may never die. 

With how you’re feeling, that’s gonna take a really good muzzle. You really have to bite your tongue so many times and just let things slide. After he’s gone, you’re not a part of his decisions anymore and you have to accept that, even though it’s hard. There’s nothing tying him to you and he won’t generally care what you think anymore like he once did. He won’t listen to you. 

Your relationship changes and you’re no longer accountable to each other, you are acquaintances. 

It’s not an easy situation to tread through at all. It’s rough. But through Christ, you can still walk with the Lord, pleasing to Him as a Christian.

If you ARE still living together, the best advice in that scenario that I can give is to bend. 

Ever watch the Disney classic: Beauty and the Beast? The song goes…”and then somebody bends unexpectedly”. While it’s just a cartoon and we get that, bending is SO vital to a healthy marriage. Over time, married folks just stop bending. Stop compromising. Stop trying to see it from the other person’s angle.

One of the VERY first things I discuss when starting a relationship is the importance of both of us bending toward each other. Making a mutual commitment to do this for the rest of our lives is something I value deeply, and it’s truly beautiful! Seeing this in action every day ALWAYS brings a smile to my face, regardless of who is bending that day. ❤️

Here’s the thing…the Bible says for the wife to submit to her husband but the Bible ALSO says for the husband to LOVE his wife. Look up what love means to God and it’s about putting the other person ahead of yourself. Submitting. In a marriage, you BOTH submit, you BOTH bend to each other.

You can’t force him to bend to you, but you CAN do YOUR part. Bend toward him. See the angle from his point of view. Ask God to show it to you if it’s not readily visible. The point here is that this may not save your marriage, but YOU want to be 100% blameless before the Lord, so that if your marriage DOESN’T end up working, it’s not YOUR fault!!!! 

Some Don’ts To Consider

Don’t argue with your husband.

Don’t prattle.

Don’t try to convince him of anything.

Don’t play the blame game.

Don’t try to get your way.

Don’t nag (he’s not your kid; go to the Lord in prayer instead).

Don’t use the kids against him.

Don’t worry about money.

If you are a Christian, God provides for our needs! That doesn’t mean that you don’t take care of things or find employment, it just means, don’t stress over it and worry yourself to death about it. God knows your needs.

None of this is easy and I get that. But you CAN get through this. However it works out, God has a plan for your life, a plan you do not fully comprehend yet and He uses ALL things, good AND bad for your good. Just remember that. <3

Caraway – Ancient Egyptians used the spice in religious rituals and in cooking to make foods more digestible. Theophrastus recorded a recipe for oysters, eaten with caraway.

Cardamon – used in India as a spice and for medicinal purposes before Christ’s time. Greek philosopher Plutarch described how the Ancient Egyptians used it in their religious ceremonies and added it to their perfumes. They also used it as a diuretic and found it effective against epilepsy, spasms, paralysis, and rheumatic stiffness of joints. They added it to their wines to extract the therapeutic value of the seeds. 

Chamomile – Chamomile was sacred to the Ancient Egyptians, according to Hippocrates, who dedicated it to the Sun because it cured agues (malaria). 

Clove – Cloves were known to the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans.

Fennel – Theophrastus and Pliny preferred fennel over anise. Dioscorides and Hippocrates both spoke of fennel as well. The Romans used it for its digestive properties. The Greeks believed fennel was a slimming herb, as it is slightly diuretic.

Ginger – The Ancient Egyptians grew ginger and used it in their cooking. The Greeks and Romans also used it, both medicinally and in their cooking. 

Lavender – The Romans added lavender to their bath water. Dioscorides, Galen, and Pliny have all mentioned Lavender oil.

Lemon – Greeks and Romans used the peel to perfume clothes and to act as a pesticide.

Marjoram – Dioscorides made a pommade called ‘amaricimum’ with marjoram that was used for nervous disorders. Pliny prescribed it for stomach disorders.

Melissa – The name Melissa derives from the Greek word for bee because the plant is irresistible to bees. Theophrastus and Dioscorides wrote about it. 

Oregano – Theophrastus, Aristotle, Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Pliny revered oregano as a strong antiseptic for the respiratory system and for wounds, ulcers, and burns. They also believed it helped the digestion of food.

Parsley – The Ancient Egyptians and the Greeks used parsley and crowned victorious soldiers with wreaths of it. Pliny and Galen said that no sauce or salad should be without parsley.

Pepper – White and black pepper has been used in cooking and medicine for a long time. It was mentioned in old Sanskrit and Chinese texts in the tenth century BC. Pliny recorded that pepper was more expensive than gold. 

Rosemary – The Ancient Egyptians favored Rosemary, and traces of it have been found in first dynasty tombs. To Greeks and Romans, it was a sacred plant. Theophrastus and Dioscorides recommended it as a powerful remedy for stomach and liver problems.

Thyme – It has been used by the Sumerians as long ago as 3,500 BC. The Ancient Egyptians used the plants in embalming. The Romans cooked with thyme and used it medicinally. Pliny recommended it as a remedy for epilepsy.

Is it okay for Christians to use essential oils?

Wicca practices often incorporate essential oils for various purposes, including ritual, spell work, and creating a specific atmosphere for magical practices. Some Christians think that because it is used in those practices, we, as believers, cannot use them.

This is inerrant thinking. It would be like saying, “Well, non-Christians have sex, therefore, I cannot have sex.”

Non-believers will use the same products that we use. If a Wiccan uses binder paper to write on, does that mean we cannot use binder paper?

It’s absurd, right?! As long as you are not practicing magic (which is sin) or doing anything that the Bible condemns, you’re free to use essential oils as you please. 

In fact, God has commanded some people in Scripture to use essential oils.

God commanded Moses to infuse oil with aromatic spices to make a sacred anointing oil for the priests in Exodus 30:22–38. God also commanded the priests to add scented oil to certain sacrifices to make them a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord in Leviticus 2:1–2. 

Does that mean that WE are commanded to use essential oils? No. We can use them, but we do not have to. It’s our choice. 😊
