Found in the wild: The world’s first unkillable UEFI bootkit for Linux

Over the past decade, a new class of infections has threatened Windows users. By infecting the firmware that runs immediately before the operating system loads, these UEFI bootkits continue to run even when the hard drive is replaced or reformatted. Now the same type of chip-dwelling malware has been found in the wild for backdooring Linux machines.

Researchers at security firm ESET said Wednesday that Bootkitty—the name unknown threat actors gave to their Linux bootkit—was uploaded to VirusTotal earlier this month. Compared to its Windows cousins, Bootkitty is still relatively rudimentary, containing imperfections in key under-the-hood functionality and lacking the means to infect all Linux distributions other than Ubuntu. That has led the company researchers to suspect the new bootkit is likely a proof-of-concept release. To date, ESET has found no evidence of actual infections in the wild.

Still, Bootkitty suggests threat actors may be actively developing a Linux version of the same sort of unkillable bootkit that previously was found only targeting Windows machines.

“Whether a proof of concept or not, Bootkitty marks an interesting move forward in the UEFI threat landscape, breaking the belief about modern UEFI bootkits being Windows-exclusive threats,” ESET researchers wrote. “Even though the current version from VirusTotal does not, at the moment, represent a real threat to the majority of Linux systems, it emphasizes the necessity of being prepared for potential future threats.”

A rootkit is a piece of malware that runs in the deepest regions of the operating system it infects. It leverages this strategic position to hide information about its presence from the operating system itself. A bootkit, meanwhile, is malware that infects the boot-up process in much the same way. Bootkits for the UEFI—short for Unified Extensible Firmware Interface—lurk in the chip-resident firmware that runs each time a machine boots. These sorts of bootkits can persist indefinitely, providing a stealthy means for backdooring the operating system even before it has fully loaded and enabled security defenses such as antivirus software.

The bar for installing a bootkit is high. An attacker first must gain administrative control of the targeted machine, either through physical access while it’s unlocked or somehow exploiting a critical vulnerability in the OS. Under those circumstances, attackers already have the ability to install OS-resident malware. Bootkits, however, are much more powerful since they (1) run before the OS does and (2) are, at least practically speaking, undetectable and unremovable.

On the eve of her prophesied awakening, Simurgh, the goddess of Lantern City, has been kidnapped by The Scientist, and it falls to you—a young girl named Zig who spends a lot of time on her phone—to figure out what’s going on. That’s the beginning of the story in 30 Birds, a gorgeous and unexpectedly funny exploration-adventure that’s out today on Steam.

30 Birds initially caught my eye with its Persian-inspired art style and unusual mix of 2D and 3D visuals: Lantern City is literally a collection of giant lanterns floating in the cosmos, with gameplay unfolding across the surfaces of each. What held my interest, though, is its light, breezy, wonderfully funny writing and low-pressure gameplay. At first glance I expected something relatively serious and sombre, as befits an indie art game, but it’s really more like, well, this:

Zig isn’t alone on her quest to discover the fate of Simurgh. The first step, in fact, is to track down a collection of birds spread throughout Lantern City, each of whom will help in their own unique way. They’re an eclectic mix of personalities: The very first bird you meet is something of a degenerate gambler, who may or may not have had something going on with someone else’s wife. Details aren’t provided, at least as far as I’ve made it into the game (I haven’t finished it yet), but he definitely seems like a character.

It doesn’t matter how much or how little money you have, if your trust is not fully in God, you will worry about it.

People who don’t have enough, are concerned about how they will make it financially each month. Sometimes, even paying for something so many others take for granted, like putting gas in your car or buying laundry soap, is a massive burden.

I know what it’s like to struggle. I’ve been homeless.

It’s demeaning to your character and embarrassing. You somehow feel “less than” everyone else, like somehow you don’t deserve to live a normal life, have nice things, or take time off work when you really need to.

Life can become a struggle. You worry others will treat you badly if they know how much you are really suffering, so you don’t tell anyone. You keep your shame a secret and it becomes to you, your jail sentence. I’ve been there. 

For those who have money, they struggle with worry over losing it. One bad investment, one wrong mistake, one illness in the family, and their cushy life ends and they know it. 

They also deal with people being fake around them, wanting to be their friends, solely because they have wealth. 

They deal with people trying to take advantage of them. I lived in one house worth $300k and I was charged $30/week for lawn care (mowing, etc.) I moved to a much nicer home with a similar lawn square footage but was suddenly charged $75/week by the same company. 

They were charging based on the “niceness” of the home, rather than the actual work. And there are scammers everywhere, whether you have money or not, but those WITH money are more often targets. It’s a sad reality of our world today.

Another big problem with those having money is that they tend to fall into the trap of taking for granted what they have. They can become compassionless for those who are in true need, stingy, not wanting to help others who need help, or they begin to stockpile massive amounts of money away, feeling superior and confident they are financially secure, but showing no mercy to those around them and becoming prideful in their hearts. 

When the Bible says, give me just enough, feed me what I need but not too much or I’ll forget You and if you give too little, I’ll steal and profane your name, it’s very, very true (Proverbs 30:8-9). 

People complain about being middle class a lot, but I’ve been both poor and having many riches and I agree with the Bible. Middle class is best. 

Whatever side of the spectrum you’re currently on, the Bible has a lot to say about money and today I wanted to take a look at some very important verses, so that we learn how to treat our money in a way that glorifies God.

visual studio – Workaround to set default value for a Guid column in a strongly typed DataSet

Steps to reproduce issue:
In Visual Studio, in a new .Net framework app, add a new strongly typed DataSet (xsd). Add a new DataTable. Add a non nullable Guid column, and for the DefaultValue, type in: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 .

When the Custom Tool is run, you see an error in Visual Studio like:

Custom tool error: Failed to generate code. Object of type ‘System.Guid’ cannot be converted to type ‘System.String’. Object of type ‘System.Guid’ cannot be converted to type ‘System.String’.

Are there any workarounds? One could possibly set the default column value manually in the DataSet’s Designer.cs file, but hoping to prevent this as your manual change will get overwritten when the Designer.cs file is regenerated.

Senators Say TSA’s Facial Recognition Program Is Out of Control

A bipartisan group of 12 senators has urged the TSA inspector general to investigate the agency’s use of facial recognition technology, citing concerns over privacy, civil liberties, and its expansion to over 430 airports without sufficient safeguards or proven effectiveness. Gizmodo reports: “This technology will soon be in use at hundreds of major and mid-size airports without an independent evaluation of the technology’s precision or an audit of whether there are sufficient safeguards in place to protect passenger privacy,” the senators wrote. The letter was signed by Jeffrey Merkley (D-OR), John Kennedy (R-LA), Ed Markey (D-MA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Roger Marshall (R-Kansas), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Steve Daines (R-MT), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Peter Welch (D-VT).

While the TSA’s facial recognition program is currently optional and only in a few dozen airports, the agency announced in June that it plans to expand the technology to more than 430 airports. And the senators’ letter quotes a talk given by TSA Administrator David Pekoske in 2023 in which he said “we will get to the point where we require biometrics across the board.” […] The latest letter urges the TSA’s inspector general to evaluate the agency’s facial recognition program to determine whether it’s resulted in a meaningful reduction in passenger delays, assess whether it’s prevented anyone on no-fly lists from boarding a plane, and identify how frequently it results in identity verification errors.
