Updates for C++ developers in Visual Studio 2022 17.12

Visual Studio 17.12 is here and comes with a host of new features for C++ developers. We’ve made improvements across our toolchain, C++ Build Insights, Unreal Engine support, and more. This post gives a quick overview of what’s available; for all the details, see What’s New for C++ Developers in Visual Studio 2022 17.12 on the C++ blog.

Standard Library and MSVC Compiler

As always, you can find all the details about our STL work in the changelog on GitHub. Thanks to everyone who contributed changes for this release!

On the conformance side, we have finished the implementation of C++23’s P2286R8 Formatting Ranges and the multidimensional subscript operator (e.g. my_3d_span[i,j,k]). This release also comes with some new C++26 features:

P2997R1 Removing The Common Reference Requirement From The Indirectly Invocable Concepts
P0952R2 A New Specification For generate_canonical()
P2968R2 Make std::ignore A First-Class Object

You’ll find improvements to several debug visualizers, including those for mutex/recursive_mutex and move_iterator.

We added lifetimebound attributes to min, max, clamp, ranges::min, ranges::max, and ranges::clamp, allowing MSVC code analysis and Clang –Wdangling to detect dangling references in improper usage. See the documentation for warnings C26815 and C26816 for more information about lifetimebound annotations.

Finally, we improved the performance of several types and algorithms. The popcount() function now uses a compiler intrinsic on ARM64. We further improved the vectorized implementations of the minmax_element() and minmax() algorithm families, and optimized the search() and find_end() algorithms. We also overhauled the implementations of condition_variable and condition_variable_any, which has knock-on effects on the timed_mutex and recursive_timed_mutex types.

Set Command Line Arguments for Unreal Engine Projects

For Unreal Engine projects, you can now set the command line arguments to pass to your application directly from the toolbar. This toolbar component will show up by default if you have the Game development with C++ workload installed. If you don’t see it, you can add it by right-clicking on the toolbar and selecting Set Arguments.

We’ll be adding support for this feature to non-UE projects in the future. See Pass command-line arguments while debugging on Microsoft Learn for documentation.

Open Folder for Unreal Engine uproject

We have added an additional entry point to open your Unreal Engine uproject with Visual Studio’s uproject support. You can now open your uproject directly from the File menu by selecting Open > Folder…. This will open your Unreal Engine project in Visual Studio.

Change Signature Improvements

We have updated the Change Signature interface, allowing you to add, remove, and rearrange parameters in the parameter configuration section. Additionally, you can change their order by selecting and dragging them to a new position.

The access methods remain the same: press Ctrl+. to trigger the Quick Actions and Refactorings menu and select Change Signature.

C++ Build Insights

This release of Visual Studio comes with a bunch of quality-of-life improvements for C++ Build Insights.

You can now select a few files, run Build Insights on them, and see exactly how these files impact build performance:

Note that we now truncate paths to make them easier to read.

You can designate a folder to automatically store the reports so you can easily access them during your investigation.

Plex’s new interface is a big step forward, and two steps back

It might surprise you, but Plex is the center of my media consumption. Much of what I watch has been dumped from my Blu-ray and DVD collection and, rarely, collected from the high seas. The platform offers me everything that streaming services don’t — ownership over my media, the ability to watch uncompressed video on my 75-inch television and home theater system, and the option to take it with me on the go.

The refreshed Plex interface keeps most of the functionality and amps up the design.

But the one thing it’s been lacking is a great interface. Don’t get me wrong. The current Plex UI works and does everything you need from it. However, it looks dated, requires more taps than needed to accomplish oft-used tasks, and just doesn’t feel great. As it turns out, Plex thinks the same. There’s a new Plex interface out — on mobile first, but coming soon too other platforms — and I’ve been testing it over the last few days. Oh boy, there’s a lot to talk about here.

Out with the old, in with the new

Plex wasn’t kidding when it said that the new Plex experience was completely reimagined. Pop into the app, and you can immediately observe the night-and-day difference in approach.

It all starts with the homepage, where the higher information density, larger posters, and cleaner titling make everything look more modern, for lack of better words. The all-black backdrop further adds to the visual appeal and makes the media pop.

That renewed visual flair extends deep into the library. Tap a movie or TV show, and you’ll be presented with a large artwork that flows down the page. A lot of the extraneous information, like audio and video codecs, has been removed. Instead, you get much simpler details about the episode, including its air date, episode length, a brief description, and the cast.

The updated library page takes a page out of modern streaming services and removes nerdy bits like codecs.

It’s what you’d expect from a modern streaming service, though I can see die-hard data nerds being unhappy with the change. As a fan of movie and television posters, I’m a bit indifferent to the new approach that can hide away a portion of the artwork. However, it’s not a huge deal to me.

The other very noticeable change is the switched-up navigation. Right now, Plex relies on a series of tabs and hamburger menus that can make one-handed use hard. It’s not very intuitive either and makes it a chore to switch between multiple servers and libraries.

All of that is gone. Instead, the entire interface is optimized for one-handed use. There are no more hamburger menus to switch between libraries. Instead, users are expected to tap the “My Libraries” tab and toggle libraries from the drop-down menu at the top. I’m not a big fan of this change, as it still requires two taps to switch from movies to TV shows. However, Plex is still working on the UI, and I hope this toggle makes it to a more accessible location.

Elsewhere, Plex’s streaming hub ambitions are very clearly on display. Dedicated tabs for collections and playlists, vestiges of the self-hosted origins of Plex, have been swapped out for a Live TV and On-Demand tab.

Personally, as someone who rarely catches Live TV or the assortment of low-quality B-films on Plex, I’d like the ability to customize these buttons. In fact, I can see myself adding dedicated buttons for my movie and TV library. However, that’s not possible here. The collections and playlists that I mentioned earlier? Those have now been consolidated under the library feed. It’s not a bad choice considering both the features were decidedly prosumer-oriented.

The new interface makes it obvious that Plex considers ad-supported streaming and discovery the future of its business.

Another fresh addition is the Discover tab. Yet another Plex venture, Plex Discover lets you, well, discover new media to consume. The idea here is that you add interesting upcoming or ongoing shows to a watchlist. Similar to JustWatch, Plex will let you toggle on all the streaming services you subscribe to. If a show on your watchlist is available on a streaming service, the Plex app will redirect you to that streaming service. Conversely, it can also launch the file if you have it on your server.

Plex Discover has been available for a while, and honestly, I haven’t found much use for it. It’s not how I consume media, and I’d rather track my viewing habits on Trakt anyway. That said, you can’t fault the implementation, and at least on mobile, watchlists look pretty and work well. Moreover, it can be a nifty way to find something new to watch.

Why now?

Plex has been moving away from its local-streaming roots for a while. As such, the move to integrate more of its content aggregation and free streaming service into the app makes a lot of sense. After all, Plex wants more users to tap into its on-demand movie streaming service. That said, as someone who has no interest in either Plex’s streaming component or Live TV, the move is a bit off-putting to me. Much as I like the rest of the interface changes, the new app feels like a significant portion of the interface has been designed to sideline the self-hosted feature that built up Plex’s audience.

The refreshed Plex app is a clear look into the company’s ambitions, and long-time users might want to start looking at alternatives like Jellyfin.

Sure, much of the feature set is still there, but the increasing focus on streaming Plex-first content and discovering new content through the platform doesn’t bode well for long-time users who have built entire ecosystems around Plex. If you’re one of them, you will want to start keeping an eye out for Jellyfin.

That said, I hope I’m just jumping the gun here. The interface, as it stands, is definitely the right step towards modernizing the dated UI. Additionally, the app is only available in preview at the moment, with active development still taking place. So hopefully, there’ll be more options to customize the interface and bring Plex more in line with its streaming roots.

Taste of Success: Zordi Plants AI and Robotics to Grow Flavorful Strawberries Indoors

With startup Zordi, founder Gilwoo Lee’s enthusiasm for robotics, healthy eating, better produce and sustainable farming has taken root.

Lee hadn’t even finished her Ph.D. in AI and robotics at the University of Washington when investors seeded her ambitious plans for autonomous agriculture. Since researcher-turned-entrepreneur Lee founded Zordi in 2020 with Casey Call, formerly head grower at vertical farming startup Plenty, the robotic grower of strawberries has landed its fruits in Wegmans and is now expanding with partner farms in New Jersey and California.

“The most rewarding part is that the fruits you get taste amazing,” said Lee. “You’re able to consistently do that throughout the cycle of the plant because you are constantly optimizing.”

The company has two types of robots within its hydroponic operations. One is a scouting robot for gathering information on the health of plants using foundational models. The other is a harvesting robot for delicately picking and placing fruits and handling other tasks.

Zordi, whose engineering team is based outside Boston, has farms in southern New Jersey and western New York. The company uses NVIDIA GPUs in the cloud and on desktops for training everything from crop health models to those for fruit picking and assessing fruit quality.

Lee aims to deploy autonomous greenhouse systems globally to support regional markets, cutting down on the carbon footprint for transportation as well as providing fresher, better-tasting fruits grown more sustainably.

Having operated greenhouses in New York and New Jersey for two years, the company recently formed partnerships with greenhouse farms in New Jersey and California to meet growing demand.

Zordi is bringing NVIDIA accelerated AI automation to indoor growing that in many ways is parallel to developments in manufacturing and fulfillment operations.

Adopting Jetson for Sustainable Farming, Energy Efficiency

Zordi is building AI models and robots to enable sustainable farming at scale. It uses NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin modules for testing out gathering sensor data and running its models to recognize the health of plants, flowers and fruits, early pest and disease symptoms, and the needs for hydration and nutrition, as well as light and temperature management.

Jetson’s energy efficiency and the availability of low-cost, high performance cameras from NVIDIA partners are attractive attributes for Zordi, said Lee. The company runs several cameras on each of its robots to collect data.

“Jetson opens up a lot of lower-cost cameras,” said Lee. “It lets us play with different cameras and gives us better battery management.”

With its scouting and harvesting robots, Zordi also aims to address a big issue farms worldwide complain about: a labor shortage that affects operations, leaving fruits and vegetables sometimes unattended and unharvested altogether.

Zordi is planning to scale up its growing operations to meet consumer demand. The company expects that it can do more with AI and robotic automation despite labor challenges.

“We want our harvesting robots to do more dexterous tasks, like pruning leaves, with the help of simulation,” said Lee.

Omniverse Isaac Sim and Digital Twins to Boost Operations

Zordi is looking at how to boost its indoor growing operations with AI much like industrial manufacturers do, using Isaac Sim in Omniverse for simulations and digital twins to optimize operations.

The company’s software platform for viewing all the data collected from its robots’ sensors provides a live dashboard with a spatial map. It offers a real-time view of every plant in its facilities so that it’s easy to monitor the production remotely.

What’s more, it analyzes plant health and makes optional crop care recommendations using foundational models so that inexperienced farm operators can manage farms like experts.

“We’re literally one step away from putting this all into Isaac Sim and Omniverse,” said Lee, whose Ph.D. dissertation covered reinforcement learning and sim-to-real.

Zordi is working on gripping simulations for strawberries as well as for cucumbers and tomatoes to expand into other categories.

“With strawberries or any other crops, if you can handle them delicately, then it helps with longer shelf life,” Lee said.

Lee is optimistic that the simulations in Isaac Sim will not only boost Zordi’s performance in harvest, but also let it do other manipulation tasks in other scenarios.

Big picture, Zordi aims to create a fully autonomous farming system that makes farming easy and profitable, with AI recommending sustainable crop-care decisions and robots doing the hard work.

“What’s really important for us is how do we automate this, and how do we have a thinking AI that is actually making decisions for the farm with a lot of automations,” said Lee.

used sdk 8 file for setup but missing Targeting pack from control panel. with re-install or repair as well not able to view targeting pack file.

used Visual studio installer only version available was 2022 used it to install individual component file but still no change

followed this step to update nuget for 4.8

Eyewa now has 150 stores selling eyeglasses in the Mideast, and just raised $100M to add 100 more

Helping consumers find the perfect glasses is a booming global business, spawning giants like Warby Parker in the U.S. and Lenskart in India. In the Middle East, this market is producing its own rising powerhouse: Eyewa.

Eyewa, based in Dubai and Riyadh, sells a wide range of eyewear products, including prescription glasses, sunglasses, blue light glasses, and contact lenses, through a DTC e-commerce and retail platform across five Mideast markets.

Now, the company has raised $100 million Series C round. The round, led by global growth investor General Atlantic, brings Eyewa’s total funding to $130 million since its 2017 launch.

Founded by Anass Boumediene, Mehdi Oudghiri, and Abdullah AlRugaib – all former Bain & Company consultants – Eyewa initially entered the eyewear market as an e-commerce retailer for third-party brands. However, the company soon launched its own brands after identifying unmet needs in the Middle East.

Between 2015 and 2017, co-CEOs Boumediene and Oudghiri led Foodpanda’s regional operations under Rocket Internet and DeliveryHero ownership. Their experience scaling the food-delivery business – which they claim to have grown 50x in three years and taken to profitability – motivated them to start their own company.

“After our time with Foodpanda, we were hooked on entrepreneurship and knew we wanted to start something of our own,” shared co-CEO Boumediene on a call with TechCrunch. “We wanted to find the right problem to solve, so we started exploring ideas and comparing challenges we saw across different regions.”

From delivering food to selling eyeglasses

The founders brainstormed 87 ideas, and after filtering options with a list of 15 criteria and conducting a six-month evaluation, they landed on the eyewear market, a vastly different industry from food delivery.

They discovered demand for eyewear was growing significantly, but the supply wasn’t keeping up. Myopia was rising in the region’s relatively young population (one study shows that the prevalence of myopia and high myopia in the UAE is around 27%). In addition, local eyewear companies were focused on in-store sales, rarely did any e-commerce, and their brands weren’t affordable or tailored to the mass market.

With no prior experience in the eyewear industry, Eyewa started by selling eyewear brands, including Ray-Ban, Gucci, Prada, and Johnson & Johnson, online for two years.

By then, it had enough data on customer behavior, including cart additions, website searches, and purchase patterns, to design and launch its own in-house brands. Now, Eyewa has nine proprietary brands for diverse preferences, from older customers seeking functional eyewear to younger buyers looking for trendy options. Currently, 96% of Eyewa’s revenue comes from these in-house brands, which, according to the company, has been key to keeping prices affordable for the mass market, including smaller cities across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.

Eyewa markets its eyeglasses, even the prescription ones, as fashion accessories, unlike traditional retailers, who tend to treat customers as patients, selling expensive brands like Prada in sterile settings.

“We kind of turned around the way we look at the eyewear experience, where fashion is the thing that customers really care about from a choice perspective,” co-CEO Oudghiri commented on the call. “So that’s what we focus on in the retail experience and the health care aspect, we take care of it. We’re going to give you very high-quality lenses and exhaustive eye tests, and we’ll make sure that you have the best health quality for the eyewear that you buy. But what we want to push in the retail experience is the fashion.”

Eyewa also keeps prices low: In the Gulf states, Eyewa’s entry-level eyeglasses, including lenses, are priced around $100, approximately 50% less than similar products available in traditional stores.

Scaling its omnichannel experience

As an e-commerce platform, Eyewa exclusively served customers who already had prescriptions and knew the glasses they wanted. But that’s not exactly a mass market. So it began opening retail stores in December 2020 as Covid lockdowns slowly lifted.

The move allowed it to reach a broader customer base, as most eyewear shoppers still prefer in-store experiences to try on frames and complete their purchases. This also allowed Eyewa to own the full customer journey by providing eye examinations, which could only happen in physical stores equipped with optometrists and exam rooms.

Eyewa raised a $21 million Series B from several investors, including Nuwa Capital and Endeavor Catalyst, in 2021 to scale this effort, and since then, it has grown to 150 stores, all wholly owned and operated — no franchises. The startup, which now employs 1,300 people, claims to be the largest eyewear brand in Saudi Arabia by store count and the fastest-growing eyewear retailer globally.

To put this growth into perspective: global benchmarks like Warby Parker took seven years to grow from their first store to 100, and Lenskart in India took about six years to achieve the same milestone.

“We’re the fastest growing globally, but even across categories in the GCC, no other retailer in any other vertical did one store to 100 in less than four years. So we really executed super fast,” Boumediene remarked.

Boumediene declined to disclose how much eyewear the company has sold since its launch but did say Eyewa is profitable and growing at over 50% year-over-year in revenues. The company intends to add at least 100 more stores across six countries, including Qatar, its next market, in 2025; it will also open a production facility and fulfillment centre in Riyadh next quarter, said the executive.

With this round, General Atlantic joins a growing list of U.S. investors deepening their presence in the GCC by backing startups and establishing local teams, after receiving capital from the region’s sovereign wealth funds.

“It seems there is a lot of newfound global interest in the region. We’ve had the VC ecosystem develop in the last five years, and many investments happen in early stage,” commented Mehdi. “But it’s great to see now more established growth and private equity funds starting to look at the region and the likes of General Atlantic coming, and hopefully many more that will follow.”

Badwa Capital and Turmeric Capital also participated in the round.
