Nvidia CEO Claims China’s AI Tech Is Hot on His Heels


Nvidia’s CEO, Jensen Huang, is warning that China isn’t far behind the US on AI development at all, and in fact is “very, very close” to delivering competitive products and hardware for the growing AI industry. He went on to praise Chinese tech giant Huawei, calling it “one of the most formidable technology companies in the world,” and primed to rival Nvidia’s own AI chip production efforts. He warned that the country has made tremendous progress in recent years and could prove a real rival for US alternatives.

Until recently, Nvidia was primarily known for its gaming graphics hardware. Now, it is one of the largest companies in the world and at the forefront of AI training and hardware design, with its H200 graphics cards powering some of the most advanced AIs around the world. However, Chinese AI developments made waves in recent months for their capabilities and efficiency, and now Nvidia’s CEO warns they’re catching up on hardware, too.

“There’s no question that Huawei is one of the most formidable technology companies in the world, and they’re incredible in computing,” Huang told reporters, via Business Insider. “They’re incredible in networking technology and software capabilities, all of these capabilities to advance AI they have. They’ve made enormous progress in the last several years.”

This comes amid the US government restricting sales of Nvidia’s China-specific H20 GPUs to the country, over fears it could help accelerate China’s AI developments. Huang’s warning seems to suggest that without Nvidia’s involvement, Chinese companies will fill the gaps instead. At the forefront of those developments is Huawei, a Chinese telecomms company initially rebuffed by Western countries in its attempts to contribute to the 5G rollout. It’s now producing AI hardware, with its CloudMatrix 384 system launching this year, offering alleged competition with Nvidia GPUs in raw performance.

However, while Huawei and other Chinese companies are developing new AI hardware at pace, some analysts point to their lack of established software ecosystems as a potential stumbling block. Where Nvidia’s CUDA has a robust pedigree of software integration, Huawei’s AI chips do not. That could hamper scalability, even if the AI hardware it produces is as capable as it claims.

It’s important to remember, too, that the job of CEOs such as Huang and OpenAI’s Sam Altman is to generate profit for their investors. That happens for Nvidia if it sells more GPUs, or if companies invest in ChatGPT, which may be more likely if Western companies feel China is poised to outcompete them. That’s not to say China isn’t developing AI hardware and that Nvidia and its partners have some stiff competition coming down the pipe. But Nvidia’s goals with announcing this are unlikely to be altruistic.

And traditional clubs in the US and the UK are closing at an alarming rate— casualties of rising costs, lower profits, and, in places, onerous regulations around noise levels, security requirements and closing times. The infinite amount of space available on VR, plus the lack of regulation, allows creators to blissfully ignore the economic pressures that limit nightlife in many places today. WIRED spoke to 12 people who are engrossed in the scene, from trans people who feel safer partying in VR to introverts and seniors who find it more welcoming. It’s even spawning underground VR sex and drug subcultures, with erotic club nights and venues meant to mimic the effect of psychedelics; O’Rourke and other enthusiasts say they’ve clocked up drug-fueled marathon dance sessions all without many of the stressors of traditional club nights.

O’Rourke, an introvert who is self-conscious about his 5-foot-4 height, co-runs a party called Euro-Corp, which resembles a traditional club space, with a narrow, wooden-looking dancefloor and a DJ booth overlooking it all. He says he is putting in so many hours—almost 1,800 at the time of writing—because he feels now is the “high water mark moment” for the scene. “When people look back in 10 or 20 years, they’ll say now was its peak. That’s why I’m partying so hard.”

But he admits he overdoes it sometimes. “I accidentally did a heroic dose [of mushrooms] and it was a bit of a mess,” he says of the March 2024 trip during which he could not distinguish between his hallucinations and the VR world. “I haven’t taken shrooms since because it was a bit heavy.” Since then, he’s decided ketamine “synergizes most with VR” because it enhance the levels of immersion to render the virtual reality more real.

Others, like Heelix, a 61-year-old VR DJ from Berlin who has spent nearly 5,000 hours—the equivalent of 200 days— in VR, struggle to control their drinking. “I think it’s a little bit dangerous,” he says. “I’ve seen people going overboard and [their avatars] suddenly disappearing.” Another VR party promoter says: “Because of the headset, you don’t realize how drunk you are till you take it off.” One partier says he’s has had friends who have needed their stomachs to be pumped after marathon drinking sessions on VRChat.

SSIS Target Version with VS Package Changes On Deployment


I have a package in Visual Studio 2022 that I am deploying into an SSISDB catalogue on a 2019 SQL Server.

Within my package Properties > Configuration Properties > General > Deployment Target Version > TargetServerVersion I have specified ‘SQL Server 2019’ in Visual Studio.

My problem occurs when I deploy this out onto the 2019 server. The dtsx package fails to run and leaves no execution/validation history.

Upon grabbing the package from the server back to my local machine I see that the TargetServerVersion is now showing as ‘SQL Server 2022′.

How can I ensure my packages deploy in the correct version if the specific version doesn’t seem to translate during deployment?

In the Package Property Page, my options for Configuration within the drop down only list "Active(Development)" and "Development". I see no option for "All Configurations" listed as a potential solution in questions similar to this one.

Update: I’ve experimented with opening/deploying new packages out and it looks like, even with completely new and blank projects specified at 2019, they are all deploying at version 2022 instead of 19. This lead me to believe it’s a problem in the configuration of Visual Studio and not the package…but I’m still daft to find where it is going wrong.

This overlooked Florence Pugh Netflix horror movie is a must-watch


It can sometimes feel like Florence Pugh emerged into the world a full-formed movie star. One day, she was getting some light awards buzz for roles in indie roles on the festival circuit; the next, she was headlining major films and strutting down red carpets in designer fashion. Now, for another career milestone: As the top-billed star of Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, Pugh continues to solidify her place as one of the most successful actors of her generation.

If you’ve been paying attention, Pugh’s rise to A-lister status was painstakingly earned. Before her career-making role in the cult thriller Midsommar — which led to parts in major projects like Little Women and multiple MCU installments — she paid her dues with a series of lesser-known movies. Of the bunch, one of the most overlooked and underrated is the horror flick Malevolent, a Netflix original that landed quietly in 2018 but is worth revisiting as Pugh leads a ragtag team to save the Marvel universe on movie screens across the world this weekend.

In Malevolent, Pugh plays Angela, part of a team of phony ghost hunters whose scam runs its course when they’re lured to an actual haunted house. While the group’s scheme mostly relies on technological trickery, Angela appears to have some actual, latent psychic powers. Director Olaf de Fleur reveals these within its first few minutes, showing the world through her eyes as objects mysteriously move and ghosts jump out at her from the shadows (the first of many jump scares Malevolent has in store).

Pugh plays all this with surprising coolness, even as the horror amps up in the film’s final act. There’s an impressive stoicism to her performance: she’s calm and collected, with a clear hint of sadness just below the surface. She doesn’t shriek once, at the most letting out a gasp when she comes face to face with one of Malevolent’s many deformed ghosts.

This type of subtle performance has become a cornerstone of Pugh’s career. You can see the same approach in movies like Midsommar and Dune: Part Two, where she’s able to establish complex characters with just a few sparse lines of dialogue and a soulful look into the camera. It’s a talent that dates at least back to Malevolent, where Pugh conveys more with a simple facial expression than most actors can with an entire monologue. During the movie’s few happy moments, the camera will sometimes linger on Pugh’s smile for one second too long as it falls away to reveal the despair underneath.

That’s also a stylistic choice for Malevolent, as de Fleur makes a habit of holding each shot for an extra second or two, imbuing the movie with a sense of dread that never breaks. He also constructs some impressive shots, including an opening scene in which the camera is framed through the perspective of a young girl. Her father has hired the group to communicate with his dead wife, but as the scene plays out, you can’t see anyone’s faces until they crouch down to speak to the girl directly.

While there are plenty of reasons to praise Malevolent — the synthy soundtrack is eerie without sounding like a Stranger Things imitation, and some of the practical effects are downright terrifying — it’s also far from a perfect movie. Not all the characters get quite enough development for their eventual deaths to resonate, and as the film reaches a somewhat hectic climax, it can be hard to follow the action. De Fleur’s insistence on building mood over noisy jump scares also limits Malevolent’s effectiveness as a horror film. Because sometimes, you really do need the main character to scream bloody murder when the moment calls for it.

At this point in Pugh’s career, it seems unlikely she’ll ever wind up in another low-budget Netflix horror movie, and that makes Malevolent’s existence all the more special. She may not approach the role in typical scream queen fashion, but her skills as an actor more than make up for it. All the building blocks of a remarkable career are on display here, from her subtle, inward performance to a tangible coolness under pressure she is able to evoke. In the years since, Pugh’s added a few more tricks to her repertoire (you wouldn’t know it from Malevolent, but she’s also hilarious). And yet, even in this imperfect, scary horror flick from 2018, there’s no doubt that Florence Pugh was a movie star in the making.

Revelo’s LatAm talent network sees strong demand from US companies, thanks to AI


While many tech companies are mandating that their employees return to their offices, and putting an emphasis on building in-person teams, they are also turning in droves to Latin America to find developer talent — especially for post-training AI models.

Revelo, a full-stack platform of vetted developers in Latin America, is seeing a new surge in demand for engineers that can help with LLM training, Revelo co-founder and CEO Lucas Mendes, told TechCrunch. Revelo has more than 400,000 developers on its platform and facilitates the hiring and payment process for its U.S. customers.

Mendes said this recent surge of demand for Revelo’s talent is driven by the next phase of the AI revolution: post-training LLMs.

“There’s a race for data, and especially expert human data, that can actually help LLMs be better at very specific high-value tasks,” Mendes said. “Coding is one of those tasks. And what happened last year is that we saw a surge in demand from [companies] building foundational models that are looking for engineers that can be effective experts and that can provide that human data to help their LLM code better.”

LLM training hires accounted for 22% of Revelo’s revenue in 2024.

Mendes added that often this demand looks like companies coming to them to find experts in specific coding languages to help fill gaps in the post-training they are already doing.

Revelo is supplying workers to U.S. enterprises Intuit, Oracle, and Dell, among others, including “nearly every major hyperscale AI provider.”

Revelo is not the only company looking to connect U.S. companies to programmers in Latin America; other companies like Terminal, Tecla and Near are just a few with the same goal.

This demand for developers skilled in post-training is just the latest hiring trend that Revelo has been able to ride since it was founded in late 2014.

Mendes said he launched Revelo alongside co-founder Lachlan de Crespigny because the war for talent was tight at the time, and they thought if they created a network of vetted talent in Brazil, companies would be able to find the talent they needed.

The demand was there and Revelo went on to raise more than $48 million in venture funding from firms including Social Capital, FJ Labs and Valor Capital Group. The company also expanded out of Brazil and into broader LatAm.

The Covid-19 pandemic expanded Revelo’s potential reach “massively,” Mendes added. “All of a sudden we started getting inbound from U.S. companies who suddenly realized that you can actually have really high-quality distributed teams and have some of those engineers are in Latin America,” Mendes said. “So what would happen usually is that they would hire one or two and really like the quality and especially the quality cost tradeoff and say, ‘Hey, I want more of these, where do I find them?’”

While the rise of distributed and remote work has largely started to fade as companies return to in-person work, Revelo has still managed to keep growing. Mendes joked that he hates to be the guy that goes against the buzz, but the demand for their LatAm talent has not diminished despite tech’s movement back to the office.

Mendes said he thinks that the demand from U.S. companies for these developers in Latin America has remained because these developers fall more into the “nearshoring” category of workers outside the U.S. as opposed to “offshoring.” He believes the fact that Revelo’s talent is located in the same time zones as their client companies makes these hires a lot more attractive.

Revelo is seeing enough demand that it has acquired five other competitors focused on LatAm talent in the last 30 months including Alto and Paretisa, which were announced in March.

“We’re building that global talent backbone for the age of AI and there will be more acquisitions in the future,” he said.
