3D printing is a fascinating hobby and one that has real-life applications. The idea of being able to build something and print it in your home is a DIYer’s dream. And that’s where the user-friendly 3D printing company Bambu Lab comes in. However, when an update made them less user-friendly, a controversy began brewing, which has only hit its peak now.
To start from the top, last year, YouTuber Louis Rossmann reported a new update to Bambu Lab printers that limited 3rd party software and uses for the printer. It required going through Bambu Lab’s own software, and the company at the time claimed this was to protect its devices. It’s important to note that this change happened after users had already bought and used its devices.
One workaround that people found was an open-source slicing program called OrcaSlicer that allowed users to use their 3D printers as they had prior. However, Bambu Lab reportedly sent a cease and desist letter to the developer behind the project, and they promptly took it down.
Latest Videos From
Bambu Lab cites section 1201 of the Digital Copyright Act, which argues “No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.”
Rossmann points out that this is often cited by standard printer companies when users circumvent locks to use their own ink. Being able to buy ink virtually anywhere makes maintaining printers cheaper, so it has become a pro-consumer standpoint to remove as many barriers to entry as possible on this front. Rossmann’s company, FULU, has been campaigning against laws like it for some time now.
Get fucked, @BambulabGlobal. With permission of the developer to rehost, grab OrcaSlicer-BambuLab here: https://t.co/2V2YZHy2FlMay 12, 2026
The YouTuber notes that AGPL, which is the license Bambu’s software uses, is structured such that anyone who uses the software is permitted to do as they like with it. Effectively, Rossman is arguing that Bambu’s cease and desist could not feasibly win in court.
Bambu Lab’s software (Bambu Studio) is open source and a fork of PrusaSlicer, which itself is a fork of Slic3r. Bambu Lab explained a few days ago that it supports forks of its software, but not OrcaSlicer specifically, due to its nature. Bambu argues that it communicates with its own cloud infrastructure by “impersonating another entity”.
Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.
Rossman argues that the OrcaSlicer fork is using Bambu Lab’s own source code, and “this is interesting to me for a number of reasons, because he [the developer of OrcaSlicer] never actually modified the code. He’s literally using Bambu Lab’s own open-source AGPL code without modifying it.”
The developer declined Rossman’s offer, as they didn’t want a long legal battle, so Rossman uploaded it themselves via GitHub. And that act has become somewhat of a digital rights war cry. Gamers Nexus recently took to its own website to say, “F*** you, Bambu Lab”, as it also posted the OrcaSlicer for anyone to download.
Now, Bambu Lab is in a standoff against opponents with more social media attention, and presumably more cash for legal fees, than before. How it will go is anyone’s guess, but with the backing of YouTubers with over 6 million subscribers total, it’s sure to get eyes on it either way.
Rossmann thanked Gamers Nexus and Geerling for joining the cause and urged even more social media figures to join in. They said:
“Bambu, you can’t sue us all. Or maybe you will. You can sue us all. Maybe you can try to get us all put in federal prison. But maybe you should spend that money making your software a little better or making your users happier. But what do I know?”

A small group of protesters opposed to the Saudi Arabia-led takeover of Electronic Arts staged a “raid”—in the metaphorical MMO sense of players teaming up to confront a powerful boss—at EA headquarters yesterday, demonstrating in front of the Madden field at the center of the company’s campus before attempting to present a petition signed by more than 70,000 people to EA leadership. Unfortunately, the delivery failed: While the protest went off with only one minor hitch, the attempt to serve EA the petition directly was stymied by security guards.
The “hitch” in question was EA’s decision to place barricades around Madden field ahead of the protest, along with a small sign saying the field was closed for a “private function.” Players Alliance, the group responsible for the protest, said it had not been in contact with EA over the matter, but that it believed the barricades were erected specifically to keep protesters off the field.
The protest did occur, directly in front of the barricades, and while it was small—as far as I could see on the livestream that ran yesterday, only about a dozen people were involved—it was enthusiastic and focused.

“Gamers raided EA’s HQ because we’re no longer willing to sit back while private equity firms and corporate executives turn gaming into another industry built on ripping off consumers,” Twitch streamer and Players Alliance HQ member Zefrine said in a statement. “EA placed barricades around the Madden field precisely because the company is afraid of the growing public pressure against this buyout while regulators are still deciding whether to approve the deal.
“The pressure is working, and over 70,000 gamers stand with the Players Alliance to fight back against corporate greed and finally hold these corporations to account.”
EA declined to allow the protesters to deliver those 70,000+ signatures directly, however. A Players Alliance representative said security refused to grant them access to the building, but told them that he would take the petition and “give it to the right people.”
The group also emailed the petition to EA CEO Andrew Wilson and the US government’s Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States.

The EA buyout is controversial for a couple reasons, beyond the usual concerns about media concentration. First, the leveraged buyout—the biggest in private equity history—will leave the company burdened with $20 billion in debt, which could result in layoffs, studio closures, and cancellations as the company seeks to cut costs wherever it can.
There are also worries that the Saudi-led ownership could impose content restrictions on games: EA said not long after the acquisition was announced that it “will continue to be guided by our cultural values,” but its failure to say what exactly those values are was notable.
The acquisition has also drawn the attention of game developers and US lawmakers, some of whom expressed “profound concern about the foreign influence and national security risks” attached to the deal, although they’re generally calling for greater ‘scrutiny’ and promises rather than a halt to the whole thing—which, as we learned from Microsoft’s buyout of Activision, doesn’t add up to much.
But the great likelihood is that those protests and concerns, while entirely valid, will ultimately go nowhere anyway. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia and head of the country’s Public Investment Fund, is a close associate of US president Donald Trump, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is also set to benefit from the deal through his Affinity Partners firm—which the PIF invested $2 billion into not long after Kushner left his White House senior advisor role during the first Trump administration. In 2025, Trump interfered in Netflix’s planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, which eventually went to Paramount Skydance in a deal backed by Kushern’s Affinity Partners.

Prokop Jirsa is the lead designer of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, and now one of Warhorse Studios’ two creative directors. Our Joshua Wolens recently spoke to him about their games’ love of making things difficult for players, but another topic that came up was their systems-driven nature and the role a PC Gamer article played in that.
Discussing the reaction to the first Kingdom Come Deliverance, Jirsa said, “We knew that our systems-driven world works because one of you guys thought that somebody has stolen Henry’s shoes while he was in Talmberg. And we had no system like that in there. The boots just despawned. But he was really searching around the castle, ‘Who actually stole the boots?’ And he was looking at the clothing of the NPCs.”
The article in question was Chris Livingston’s memorable piece, Kingdom Come Deliverance stole my boots, and I’m on a violent mission to get them back. As Chris explained, the saga began because of another system he was unsure of. In a game full of deep simulations of day-to-day medieval life, did he need to take his boots off before going to bed?
Latest Videos From
“Early in the story,” Chris wrote, “I’m told to get some sleep by another character, who also tells me to remove my muddy boots before getting into bed. I happily comply. I don’t know how deep the simulation is in KCD yet: for all I know, if I sleep in my boots the bed could legitimately become muddy, and this character might be annoyed with me for not following his instructions. I aim to please, so I take them off.”
And thus began the delightful Epic Boots Quest, a read I highly recommend. Turns out, the game’s developers were reading, and were delighted. “This is what we aimed for,” Jirsa said. They deliberately layered in so many complex systems “that you suddenly believe that the world is real and anything can happen in the game. And that made us feel like, yeah, OK, that works.”
Stories from other players backed the feeling up. Players would say they came across a confrontation between members of competing factions, and assume it was a bespoke narrative event. “People are thinking, OK, this is some super interesting event that the designers prepared for us,” Jirsa related. “And no, it was just a thing that came up from the systems automatically.
“So all those little stories kinda made us feel that the uniqueness of Kingdom Come is worth it, that it’s worth pursuing further. Because these systems do bring actual value to the players, even though it takes so much time to implement them and make them bug-free.”

And that’s how we ended up with a version of Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 where, as Josh wrote in his 90% review, “I once got chased out of a fortress because I’d absent-mindedly equipped a stolen ring and walked past the schmuck I took it from.”
“I still remember that PC Gamer article,” Jirsa said, “and for that reason specifically I pushed for KCD 2 that we actually had that system. So now in KCD 2 the NPCs—if you, for example, pass out drunk—they will steal your shoes. They will steal your cap, and they will start wearing that. So that was you guys.”

Abiotic Factor is already a massive game; you could easily spend 80+ hours exploring its sprawling, Black Mesa-ish research facility. But that hasn’t stopped developer Deep Field Games further extending the tendrils of its labyrinthine, interdimensional science lab. Last December’s “Holiday Cryosphere” update added a giant, living snowglobe that players could frolic festively around, and its latest patch opens up another strange dimension for your expeditious scientists to investigate.
The Cosmic Companions update invites players to brave the Dunkeltaler Forest, a coniferous portal world home to the Alpen Signal Observatorium. Accessible via a portal in the Hydroplant, the portal world will challenge you to track down the source of the signal picked up by the Observatorium. Mysterious!
As suggested by the update’s title, however, the main feature of Cosmic Companions is Abiotic Factor’s significantly enhanced pet system. Dubbed ‘Pets 2.0’ by Deep Field Games, the system makes pets a much more central part of Abiotic Factor’s play. It adds a “Companion pet slot” to your inventory that enables them to accompany you as you explore. Potential pets now include the game’s foundational “Peccary” enemy, which looks like a dog with no legs and a beak (so not much like a dog at all, being honest). You can also pick up Pets and holster them in your hotbar, meaning you can bring them up ladders, through vents, and anywhere else they can’t reach on their own.

While the pet system and new biome are the headline updates, arguably the most significant change in terms of actual gameplay is the introduction of a chemistry system. This adds two new workbenches—the distillation bench and the chemistry bench—allowing you to brew all manner of ethically questionable concoctions.
Potential brews include strength enhancers, speed enhancers, and, er, size enhancers (no, not like that), transforming your puny scientist into a seven-foot-tall Hercules. Alongside potions, the chemistry system also lets you craft weapon-enhancing coatings and throwable flasks, with effects ranging from healing grenades to, well, regular grenades.
Other additions include improvements to blunt melee weapons for scientists who enjoy solving problems directly, the introduction of a new vehicle: the hovercraft-style Power Chair. And most importantly of all, the update adds the Mop 9,000, an incredibly advanced cleaning device that combines the power of kinetics and moisture to wash away any stains covering your laboratory floor (or, indeed, any floor).
It seems like another excellent expansion to what Morgan Park called “one of the greatest survival crafting games ever made” in his Abiotic Factor review, a declaration I’d eagerly concur with. The game’s also on a 20% discount until Monday, letting you pick it up for $27 (£24).

The banners in Neverness to Everness follow most of the usual rules established by its gacha forefathers, but it has major differences in a few important areas and some changes are more welcome than others. To get you up to speed, I’ve explained every gacha system and currency used in NTE below, along with what the next and current banners are.
Jessica Orr
In the vast sea of gacha spending, from free-to-play planktons to indulgent whales, I am but a lowly goldfish feeding upon the occasional monthly battle pass and $4.99 bundle. I’m pretty careful with my spending, so you bet I’m studying the mechanics of every new gacha. Although admittedly, cosmetics have led me to the edge of dolphin territory in the past. Dangerous terrain to be when Neverness to Everness has so many costumes to collect.
How does the gacha work in Neverness to Everness?
Is the gacha in Neverness to Everness fair or not?
Well, it’s complicated. If acquiring just the character and a decent weapon is all you’re after, then yes, NTE is a lot kinder than any gacha I’ve ever played. However, it’s not as fair as it initially seems if you care about cosmetics. 200 pulls to get an exclusive banner outfit? That’s expensive, even accounting for pulls carrying over into a character’s next rerun. It amounts to the exact same as losing your 50/50 every time, plus an extra 20 pulls.
The bigger issue comes from the way gacha math is displayed on a cheery board game. It’s fun to play, but when wallets can top up dice rolls in seconds, that’s exactly the problem. It’s so tempting to continue when I’m a couple lucky pulls away from an S-Class character just a few tiles ahead. Plus, there are additional pulls and currencies rewarded if you land on certain tiles, so it seems like there’s always some benefit to keep going.
Here’s a breakdown of everything you need to know about how gacha works in Neverness to Everness:

In NTE?
How it works
Character 50/50
❌
You are guaranteed the featured character on their limited-time banner when you pull an S-Class. No dreaded 50% chance, it’s a fixed 100% drop.
Character Pity
✅
Soft pity at 70 pulls (chances of pulling an S-Class character goes from 1.87% to 19.59%). Hard pity at 90 pulls (you are guaranteed to get the featured S-Class character).
Pity carry over
✅
If you pull on one limited-time banner, your pull count carries over into the next one. For example, if Hotori comes after Nanally, your 70 pulls on Nanally’s banner means you’re guaranteed to get Hotori after pulling 20 times for Hotori, as this makes 90 hard pity.
Banner cosmetics
✅
Similar to Infinity Nikki, you get cosmetics exclusive to each limited-time banner for doing 50, 120, and 200 pulls. Pull count for cosmetics carries over to banner reruns. The base chance of acquiring the costume and livery early is 0.33%, and the 50 pull cosmetic base chance is 1.71%.
Character copies
✅
Called “Awakenings” in NTE. Get them from pulling on banners, or buying with in-game currency (Warp Pieces) in the Warp Exchange shop (standard S-Class characters only). Awakenings don’t follow a set path, and you can change them whenever you like. For example, Awakening 6 (A6) can activate before Awakening 1 (A1). However, this means that A6 might not be as powerful as A1.
Beginner’s banner
✅
Is incorporated into the permanent banner (Strange Encounters). 20% discount for pulls until 50. So 10 pulls cost 8 dice. Then at 50, you choose any standard S-Class character for free. You don’t have to do this right away–it sticks around until you claim them.
Weapon banner
✅
Use Tri-Keys in the Arc Research Program shop to pull for Arcs (what NTE calls weapons). A banner system in all but name, but you can only pull using 10 Tri-Keys at a time–no single pulls allowed.
Weapon 50/50
❌
Worse than a 50/50, actually, as there’s only a 25% chance of getting the featured Arc weapon when you pull an S-Class, with a 3% base drop rate.
Weapon pity
✅
Get an S-Class Arc on the 60th pull, get the featured S-Class Arc on the 80th pull.
Weapon pity carry over
✅
Just like the character banner, if you pull on one limited-time weapon banner, your number of pulls carries over into the next one.
Free S-Class weapons
✅
Excluding limited-time characters’ signature Arcs, S-Class weapons are obtainable by just playing the game, but you need to pull with Tri-Keys to get copies of them in the Arc Selection shop. Some are included in banners, others cost a flat 25 Tri-Keys. These flat cost Arcs are limited to one per month, so it takes four months to fully upgrade each one.
Gacha currencies
I’ll stick to explaining the currencies exclusively used on banners, or for acquiring characters and Arc weapons, or else this table might never end. What is it with gachas and their billion currencies?

Hotori is the next banner in Neverness to Everness, running during Phase 2 of version 1.0 (May 13 – June 3). She’s an S-Class DPS/buff character with the Cosmos Esper, and uses a Solid-type Arc.
Everybody’s favorite perpetually drunk time-witch has the usual three cosmetics included in her banner: a glider at 50 pulls, car livery at 120 pulls, and character costume at a steep 200 pulls. Hitori’s signature S-Class weapon will also be available in the Arc Research Program shop during Phase 2.
Upcoming characters
Lacrimosa
Chaos
Lacrimosa and Chaos are up next in version 1.1, which is expected to go live on June 4, the day after Hotori’s banner ends. Lacrimosa should debut first in Phase 1, If NTE sticks with the regular gacha formula of running the earliest character revealed via drip marketing first.

Nanally is the current banner in Neverness to Everness, running until the end of Phase 1 in version 1.0 (April 29 – May 13). She’s an S-Class DPS character with the Anima Esper who uses a Plasma-type Arc. Fun fact: Nanally’s name is censored when you type it anywhere in-game. I’ll let you work out what four letters caused this on your own.
All of the boosted A-Class characters on Nanally’s banner are:
Edgar (Cosmos, Liquid Arc)
Mint (Anima, Liquid Arc)
Adler (Incantation, Synthesis Arc)
The three cosmetics on Nanally’s banner are:
Underboss-of-the-Underboss glider (50 pulls)
Tiger Incoming car livery (120 pulls)
Phoenix Kick outfit (200 pulls)
Current weapon banner
Nanally’s signature S-Class Plasma Arc, Ready-Ready is the current weapon banner in Neverness to Everness. You can pull for this in the Arc Research Program shop, by selecting the bit labeled “Tiger Special” at the top of the Arc Shop.
The other S-Class Arcs available in Nanally’s weapon banner are:
Reality Refuge (Solid)
Youthful Fantasy (Liquid)
Good Boy’s Grand Adventure (Gas)
Camellia Society (Synthesis)
Raging Flames (Plasma)
There are also five A-Class Arcs on Nanally’s weapon banner:
