Revamped Mail App With Built-In Categorization Comes to Mac and iPad

The initial iPadOS 18.4 and macOS Sequoia 15.4 betas that Apple provided to developers today expand the revamped Mail app to the iPad and the Mac.

General macOS Mail Feature
The new Mail app features built-in categorization that organizes incoming emails into different sections. Important emails are displayed in the Primary category, with other emails organized into sections highlighting product orders, newsletters, deals, and social notifications.

A “Transactions” section aggregates receipts, orders, and deliveries to make it easy to find orders that you’ve placed and shipping information for those orders.

In an “Updates” section, you’ll find newsletters, alerts for doctor’s appointments and correspondence, and subscription emails. A “Promotions” category includes emails with offers and deals.

Categories is the default view after updating to the new software, but in the upper right corner of the Mail app, you can swap back to a list view that shows all emails in chronological order, without separation into categories. Devices that have Apple Intelligence support will show priority emails in the Primary inbox, so you can see what’s most important first. Emails in the Transactions, Updates, or Promotions section that have time-sensitive information will also be shown in the Primary section.

Apple already brought Mail categorization to the iPhone with the iOS 18.2 update, but now it has expanded to the Mac and ‌iPad‌ as well.

Apple Seeds First Public Betas of iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2 and macOS Sequoia 15.2 With New Apple Intelligence Features

Apple today seeded the first public betas of upcoming iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and macOS Sequoia 15.2 updates, allowing the public to try out the new features ahead of when the software launches. The public betas come a couple days after Apple provided developers with the second betas.

Public beta testers can download the updates from the Settings app on each device after opting into the beta through Apple’s public beta testing website.

iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and ‌macOS Sequoia‌ 15.2 introduce the next Apple Intelligence features, including the first image generation capabilities.

The update adds Image Playground, a new app for creating images based on text descriptions. You can enter anything you want, though Apple will suggest costumes, locations, items, and more to add to an image. There are options to create characters that resemble your friends and family, and you can choose a photo for ‌Image Playground‌ to use as inspiration to create a related image. Elements added to ‌Image Playground‌ creations are previewed, and there is a preview history so you can undo a change and go back to a prior version.

While ‌Image Playground‌ is a standalone app, it is also integrated into Messages, Notes, Freeform, and more. ‌Image Playground‌ does not make photorealistic images and is instead limited to animation or illustration styles.

The update also adds Genmoji, which are customizable emoji characters that you can create based on descriptions and phrases. Like ‌Image Playground‌ creations, you can base them on your friends and family, with the data pulled from the People album in Photos. You can also make characters using basic elements, and you’ll get multiple ‌Genmoji‌ suggestions to choose from. You can create ‌Genmoji‌ using the emoji keyboard.

‌Genmoji‌ are limited to iOS 18.2 and iPadOS 18.2 right now, and will be coming to ‌macOS Sequoia‌ later.

Siri in iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, and ‌macOS Sequoia‌ 15.2 has ChatGPT integration. If ‌Siri‌ is unable to provide an answer to a question, ‌Siri‌ will hand the request over to ChatGPT, though ‌Siri‌ will need user permission first. ChatGPT will answer the question and relay the information back through ‌Siri‌.

ChatGPT can be used to create content from scratch, including text and images. No account is required to use ChatGPT integration, and Apple and OpenAI do not store requests.

If you have an iPhone 16, there’s a Visual Intelligence feature in iOS 18.2 that provides information about what’s around you. Open up the camera and point it at a restaurant to get reviews, or point it at an item to search Google for it.

Some other Visual Intelligence capabilities include reading text out loud, detecting phone numbers and addresses to add them to Contacts, copying text, and summarizing text.

Apple added Writing Tools in iOS 18.1, but in iOS 18.2, you can more freely describe the tone or content change that you want to make, such as adding more action words, or turning an email into a poem.

‌Apple Intelligence‌ now supports localized English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, and the UK in addition to U.S. English.

Wait List

If you’ve already been testing ‌Apple Intelligence‌ and are opted in, you will have access to Writing Tools, ChatGPT integration, and Visual Intelligence automatically.

There is a secondary waiting list for early access to use ‌Genmoji‌, ‌Image Playground‌, and Image Wand. You can sign up to get access in ‌Image Playground‌ or in the areas where you access ‌Genmoji‌ or Image Wand.

When you request access, you are added to a wait list for all three capabilities and you’ll get a notification when the features are available for you to use. Apple will roll out access over time.

Availability and Compatibility

The public betas are available on all devices, but the ‌Apple Intelligence‌ features require a device capable of ‌Apple Intelligence‌.

Apple is still working on refining the new ‌Apple Intelligence‌ tools, and the company warns that ‌Genmoji‌, Image Wand, and ‌Image Playground‌ can sometimes give you results you weren’t expecting. Apple is collecting feedback on these experiences and will refine them over time.

Release Date

Apple is expected to release the iOS 18.2, iPadOS 18.2, ‌macOS Sequoia‌ 15.2, watchOS 11.2, tvOS 18.2, and visionOS 2.2 updates in early December.

Apple fixes bugs in macOS Sequoia that broke some cybersecurity tools

In September, Apple released the new version of its computer operating system macOS 15, also known as Sequoia, which broke the functionality of several cybersecurity products, including those made by CrowdStrike and Microsoft. 

Three weeks later, on Friday, Apple released the first update to macOS 15, and it claims to have fixed those issues. In the macOS 15.0.1 release notes, Apple says that the update “improves compatibility with third-party security software.”

Apple flagged the update in an email to TechCrunch on Thursday, and a spokesperson did not respond to a follow-up asking for more information. 

Patrick Wardle, the founder of macOS and iOS security startup DoubleYou, and a longtime expert on Apple security and the developer of several free security tools for macOS, wrote on X that the macOS update includes “a fix for the networking issues that plagued the initial macOS 15 release.”

“And to any Apple apologist who blamed 3rd-party vendors, you deserve to be slapped with a large trout as this was an Apple bug reported before [golden master],” Wardle wrote, referring to the first public release of the macOS 15 software.

When Apple first released macOS 15, several cybersecurity professionals said they were unable to use some security tools, such as CrowdStrike’s Falcon and Microsoft Defender, because of an apparent bug in the new macOS operating system. 

At the time, CrowdStrike spokesperson Kevin Benacci said that the company was “waiting for a macOS Sequoia update” to provide official support for its cybersecurity products on Apple’s operating system. 

Ugur Koc, a developer who works as a cloud engineer for for cloud managed service provider Glueckkanja, said on X that the new macOS update “resolves the issue with [Microsoft] Defender for Endpoint and other antivirus software, where the network filter was causing issues with the internet connectivity.”

Neither CrowdStrike nor Microsoft responded to a request for comment. 

iPhone Mirroring in macOS Sequoia and iOS 18: Everything You Need to Know

Apple is expanding how its cross-platform Continuity features work in 2024, introducing an iPhone Mirroring option in macOS Sequoia and iOS 18. As the name suggests, ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring lets you control your ‌iPhone‌ with your Mac.

This guide walks through all of the ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring features and explains how it works.

iPhone Mirroring Basics

After upgrading to ‌iOS 18‌ and ‌macOS Sequoia‌, there’s a new ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring app in the Dock, and that’s how you start an ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring session.

  1. From your Mac’s Dock, click on the ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring app.
  2. Click on Continue at the pop-up informational screen.
  3. Select the ‌iPhone‌ that you want to use if you have more than one ‌iPhone‌.
  4. Unlock your ‌iPhone‌ with a passcode to allow the connection.
  5. Click on Get Started.
  6. Use Touch ID on the Mac to authenticate (alternatively, enter your password).

When you start up ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring for the first time, you can opt to have it require authentication with every connection or to allow a connection automatically. If you choose automatic authentication, you will not need to authenticate with ‌Touch ID‌ or a password to use ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring when your Mac is unlocked.

Otherwise, you will need to authenticate on your Mac each time you want to use ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring. Note that an ‌iPhone‌ needs to be locked while an ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring session is in progress, so you can’t use your ‌iPhone‌ while it’s being mirrored to your Mac.

If your ‌iPhone‌ is not locked and you attempt to initiate ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring from your Mac, you will get a warning that the ‌iPhone‌ is in use.

There is no option for launching an ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring session from an ‌iPhone‌ — it needs to be done from a Mac. While the ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring app icon should be in the Dock, if it’s not there, you can get to it from the Launchpad or the Applications folder, because it is treated as a standard app.

Your full ‌iPhone‌ interface is shown as a dedicated app on the Mac, with your wallpaper and app icons all visible and accessible. You can click in to any of your apps and use it on the Mac just like you would on the ‌iPhone‌.

You can get to your Home Screen by clicking on the bottom bar, and swap between pages with the trackpad or with a click and drag gesture using a mouse. There are menu options for getting to the ‌Home Screen‌ and for bringing up the app switching interface, but most control is done within the ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring window.

iPhone Mirroring Requirements

To use ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring, you need a Mac that runs ‌macOS Sequoia‌ and that has an Apple silicon chip (M1 or later) or a T2 security chip. Macs with T2 security chips are Intel-based and include the following machines:

  • 2020 and later ‌Mac mini‌
  • 2020 and later ‌MacBook Air‌
  • 2021 and later ‌iMac‌
  • 2021 and later MacBook Pro (14 and 16 inch)

Any ‌iPhone‌ that runs ‌iOS 18‌ works with ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring.

Your ‌iPhone‌ and Mac need to be signed into the same Apple ID, and two-factor authentication must be enabled for the ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring feature to work. You will also need to turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and the two devices will need to be near each other.

During an ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring session, your Mac and your ‌iPhone‌ need to be close to one another, essentially in the same room.

Privacy and Security

You need to be signed into the same ‌Apple ID‌ on your ‌iPhone‌ and your Mac for ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring to work. While ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring is active, you do not need to have your ‌iPhone‌ with you, and it does not need to be unlocked.

Your ‌iPhone‌ can remain tucked away in a pocket or a bag while you control it from your Mac, so no one can access it or see what you’re doing with it.

Using a Mouse and Keyboard with iPhone

Your Mac’s keyboard, trackpad, and mouse can be used with your ‌iPhone‌, which is useful if you need to type something lengthy in an ‌iPhone‌ app.

Audio, Camera, and Microphone

If you play a video on your ‌iPhone‌ while ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring is enabled, the audio comes through your Mac. You can’t turn on the Camera app or use the microphone, though.

With ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring turned on, incoming ‌iPhone‌ notifications show up right alongside your Mac notifications in the Notification Center at the upper right hand corner of the Mac’s display.

‌iPhone‌ notifications are denoted with a small ‌iPhone‌ icon, but they otherwise look like native Mac notifications.

You can click on a notification and open up the app on your ‌iPhone‌, interacting with it directly from the Mac.

StandBy

While your ‌iPhone‌ is being mirrored to your Mac, it can be on a charger and in StandBy mode, displaying the time and other information.

Drag and Drop

Later this year, Apple plans to add ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring’s best feature, file transfers. You will be able to transfer files, photos, and videos from your Mac to your ‌iPhone‌ and vice versa using drag and drop gestures.

Apple says that it will work just like dragging files from one Mac app to another.

While drag and drop has yet to be implemented, you can sort of work around this by using AirDrop to move photos and files from your ‌iPhone‌ to your Mac, initiating AirDrop from the ‌iPhone‌ without having to unlock it.

iPhone Mirroring Limitations

‌iPhone‌ Mirroring will not work if the Mac is using AirPlay to stream music or video content to another device, or if Sidecar is enabled with an iPad. Continuity Camera cannot be enabled either, so if you’re using your ‌iPhone‌ as a webcam for your Mac, you can’t use ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring at the same time.

Attempting to watch movies and TV shows from some apps like Hulu and Netflix does not work, with the ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring app showing just a blank black screen, likely due to DRM restrictions.

There is no option to resize the ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring window, and you can’t manually move it into landscape orientation. If an app or a game is displayed in landscape orientation, the window will shift into landscape.

You can delete apps when using ‌iPhone‌ Mirroring by going to the Settings app, but apps cannot be deleted from the ‌Home Screen‌. You also can’t rearrange apps because there’s no option to get into the ‌Home Screen‌ (or Lock Screen) editing interface.

With the new Passwords app in iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, there’s a feature that is designed to allow websites and apps to upgrade existing accounts to passkeys automatically.

Enabled by default, the feature will speed up the adoption of passkeys, which are more secure than a traditional login and password. Passkeys log you in with Face ID or Touch ID rather than a password, and because on-device authentication is required, passkeys put a stop to online attacks like phishing. There’s no password to steal or authentication code that can be intercepted.

Several popular websites and services have implemented Passkey support since Apple started using passkeys in 2022, including Twitter, Google, WhatsApp, TikTok, PayPal, Best Buy, Microsoft, PlayStation, and eBay.

Passkeys are supported in the new Passwords app that’s available in ‌iOS 18‌, iPadOS 18, ‌macOS Sequoia‌, and Windows PCs through iCloud for Windows.
