Ultimate Guide to Rebar Detailing Services for Your Construction Project

If you’re building custom furniture, you need millwork drawing services as documentation, reference, and instruction for the millworker to construct and install the product. A rebar (reinforcement bar) shop drawing is somewhat like a millwork drawing, but for the construction of rebar in a concrete structure. The process of creating the rebar shop drawing is often referred to as rebar detailing.

A reinforcement bar is a mandatory ingredient of concrete, as it can significantly enhance the durability and load-bearing capacity of the structure. Concrete is created by mixing cement, sand, gravel, and water in a specific ratio; while the resulting mixture itself is exceedingly complex and dense, it’s relatively brittle and prone to fail under heavy stress. When used for load-bearing components of a building (such as beams, walls, slabs, trusses, arches, etc.), the concrete is susceptible to rapid cracking. The low tensile strength may even lead to sudden structural collapse. Reinforced concrete solves all those issues.

That said, not every AEC has an in-house professional for the task, which means they must hire one from an external source each time a project necessitates a detailed rebar shop drawing. Some companies outsource the job to the smaller construction firms, while others prefer to hire freelancers. The latter option is often more affordable, but there is the inherent risk of the drawings turning out to be underwhelming, or perhaps worse than the expectation due to poor communication or blatant incompetence. If you have to hire a freelance rebar detailer, at least choose a professional from a reputable platform.

And when it comes to rebar detailing services, a specialized platform like Cad Crowd should be the first choice. Cad Crowd specializes in the AEC industry, with a strict freelancer-screening policy, to make sure that you always get to hire a qualified rebar steel detailer on demand at an affordable rate.

Why you need rebar detailing

Design (including size, shape, and materials) and structural integrity are the two most significant contributing factors to the overall rigidity of a construction. As mentioned earlier, rebar increases the tensile strength of a building’s load-bearing components. While an amateur handyperson can probably install reinforcement bars when building a few simple beams in a tiny-scale project, it’s a whole different story if you want to make an entire structure from scratch. The bigger the structure, the more complex the installation. Rebar detailing is a job best left to a trained professional with in-depth knowledge of construction methods and structural design.

It is possible to simply use the biggest rebar from the building material suppliers, cut or bend the rods to shape, pour wet concrete over them, wait until dry, and consider it a job done. But this is an amateurish practice at best and grossly inefficient at worst. More than just inserting steel rods into a wet concrete mixture, the installation takes precise calculation of the rebar dimension and shape, depending on the size of the load-bearing component itself and the expected weight capacity. Rebar comes in a variety of sizes, shapes, and grades for different design requirements.

One of the primary purposes of rebar detailing is to use the most efficient type and volume of steel rods to achieve greater efficiency without sacrificing structural integrity. Not only do the steel rods have to be in the correct sizes and shapes, but they must be installed and configured in the correct order. Accuracy is of the utmost importance because the rebar shop drawing will also be used as a reference for cost estimation by architectural design firms.

What’s a rebar shop drawing?

Every project comes with a set of construction documents. A rebar shop drawing is a blueprint created as a detailed visualization for reinforced components. It specifies and configures rebars to be placed in the concrete mix of various load-bearing components in a structure.

A rebar detailer creates a shop drawing based on the engineer’s latest design/construction plan. The problem is that in most projects, there’s barely any direct contact between the detailer and the engineer; any communication between them is typically bridged by the general contractor (GC). In case of unclear or missing information in the design plan, the detailer must submit an RFI (Request for Information) to the engineer through the GC. And the standard response time is around two weeks.

Professional rebar detailers are not mere “image editors” who receive a design plan and add rebar visualization to the drawings. They’re problem-solvers to figure out the most effective rebar configuration for the construction. The shop drawings are sent back to the engineers, and if approved, will eventually reach the hands of rebar fabricators and installers. A proper rebar shop drawing must contain at least the following information:

  • Rebar schedule: a comprehensive list of rebars required for the construction project. The list should mention the shapes, sizes, grades, and quantities of reinforcement steel rods. This is to make sure that all the materials are prepared and ready for fabrication.
  • Material specifications: additional information to reiterate the specifications of rebar, concrete elements, and other materials required for the installation. It provides insights into the overall strength, performance, durability, and cost factors of the structure.
  • Rebar details: visualization for the rebar assembly process. The main idea is to provide visual guides to the types and spacing of the rebars. Architectural visualization services may include representation of bends, hooks, and other fixtures. Keep in mind that the visualization is more than a mere image, but a data-driven drawing based on the intended design and strength of the structure.
  • Bar bending schedules: a complete list of rebars to be bent and cut during fabrication. If the bars are already cut and bent to specifications, the construction workers can be expected to finish the assembly and installation processes quickly. Every single bar should fit well in the designated spot without further modification on-site.
  • Clear cover: a visual representation to depict the space between the outer surface of the concrete and the nearest-positioned rebar unit. A safe distance keeps the rebar from corrosion and rust, so the reinforcement remains effective over an extended period of time.
  • Development and lap lengths: an estimation to show how the rebars should be spliced and lapped for a more seamless continuity and to optimize structural strength.
  • Anchorage details: information about the pattern and length of the rebar that must be anchored into the concrete. This is especially important if the anchorage has to be aligned with other structural elements by structural design services.
  • Spacing and location: construction drawings to represent the complete details of rebar placement inside the concrete. Every single rebar (with all the specifications) must be accounted for.
  • Structural notes: a set of instructions for the rebar installers/contractors. It’s filled with specific information such as construction methods and the required structural strength.

During the process of creating a rebar shop drawing, the detailer works closely with the general contractor, the structural engineer, and the fabricator to achieve high accuracy. Well-coordinated teamwork is expected to deliver error-free drawings that simplify both the fabrication and construction tasks.

Common Challenges in Rebar Detailing

Even a seasoned detailer doesn’t always produce accurate rebar shop drawings on the first attempt. Among the most common challenges are listed below:

  • Reinforcing steel clashes: using multiple drawings for separate structural elements makes the configuration susceptible to clashes, for example, rebars interfering with each other or sticking out of the concrete because the drawings aren’t correctly aligned. The good thing is that a unified, data-rich, realistic 3D model can provide a better visualization to help solve the issue for architectural design experts.
  • Intricate design: while there’s nothing wrong with complex designs, inexperienced detailers may find it challenging to interpret the engineer’s construction plan. A thorough analysis of load distribution is crucial to prepare the shop drawing because incorrect interpretation may lead to structural collapse if left unaddressed. It might be necessary to use an in-depth 3D model and structural analysis software to prevent mistakes.
  • Design modification and specification change: In the event that the architect or the engineer makes an alteration, especially concerning the construction plan of any of the structural elements, the rebar shop drawing must be redone. An alteration requires a systematic reassessment to identify potential effects on the rebar specifications, placement, schedule, and budget. It is wise not to commission rebar shop drawings until the design is finalized.

Most AEC companies and rebar detailers still use the conventional 2D imagery for shop drawings, which may not illustrate the placement and configuration of reinforcing steel with precision. 2D drawings are also difficult to interpret, further adding unnecessary challenges to an already intricate rebar detailing task. But the conventional way is slowly growing out of trend in favor of 3D modeling design services and BIM-based shop drawings. A data-rich model delivers a realistic visualization of the rebar with automatic cost estimation and a real-time update feature.

Takeaway

Meticulous planning and accurate cost estimation play significant roles in the success of every facet of a construction project. Among the most crucial aspects of a construction are well-built structural elements, such as foundations, beams, columns, slabs, trusses, and walls. Because all those load-bearing components form the backbone of durable structures, it only makes good sense to be fastidious about how you build them.

In designing load-bearing components, rebar detailing is a pivotal point that will determine the overall structural strength of the building. The rebar shop drawing serves as a blueprint for the configuration and placement of the reinforcing steel within the concrete. It makes sure that the rebar is fabricated to the correct specification and installed in accordance with the specific design requirements of the structure.

Sega Cancels Its ‘Super Game’ Plan

Sega has cancelled its mysterious “Super Game” project five years after announcing it, according to its 2026 fiscal year financial results. The company made the decision following the weak performance of its free-to-play and “games-as-a-service” titles like Sonic Rumble Party. Sega also cited financial struggles with Angry Birds developer Rovio.

It’s never been clear exactly what Super Game was, with Sega previously painting it in hilariously vague terms. In 2023 the company said it involved “the concept of a game that stands head and shoulder above normal games,” after previously describing it as “large-scale, global games.” Super Game also involved online play somehow, with Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform powering development. Sega was planning to invest about $880 million and release it in March of 2026.

Whatever it was, it’s now dead. The company has shifted over 100 people who were working on free-to-play games over to development on games that people seem to actually care about. This includes “mainstay IPs” like reboots of Virtua Fighter, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Crazy Taxi that are still in progress. The company is also focusing on its biggest bright spot of late, movies, with upcoming titles including Sonic the Hedgehog 4, The Angry Birds Movie 3 and adaptations of OutRun, Golden Axe, Shinobi and Streets of Rage, among others.

AI voice startup Vapi hits $500M valuation after winning Amazon Ring over 40 rivals

Amazon Ring, facing a surge in customer-support calls during last year’s holiday season, evaluated more than 40 AI voice vendors before choosing startup Vapi to handle its inbound phone traffic. Today, Ring routes 100% of its inbound calls through Vapi’s platform.

That deployment helped Vapi raise a $50 million Series B led by Peak XV Partners at a valuation of around $500 million after investment, according to a person familiar with the matter.

Ring turned to Vapi in mid-Q4 last year, when it was weighing whether to expand call-center capacity, rely more heavily on traditional automated phone systems, or deploy AI agents that could respond more naturally to customers, Vapi Chief Executive Jordan Dearsley (pictured above, left) told TechCrunch. Dearsley believes Ring chose Vapi because if offered Ring engineers granular control over how the AI agents behaved in live customer interactions.

Jason Mitura, vice president of software development at Amazon Ring, said Ring’s customer satisfaction scores improved after deploying Vapi’s platform and that the company’s teams were able to tune the AI agent experience without depending on engineering. “A lot of AI tools promise great outcomes — Vapi has delivered on them,” he said.

Founded by Dearsley and his University of Waterloo classmate Nikhil Gupta (pictured above, right), Vapi grew out of an AI therapist Dearsley built in 2023 for conversations during his daily walks. The pair, who had gone through Y Combinator with productivity startup Superpowered, found that while few people wanted the therapy product itself, startups were increasingly interested in the low-latency voice infrastructure underneath it. This led them to pivot to Vapi and launch the platform publicly in 2024.

Vapi provides tools for companies to build, deploy, and manage voice agents across customer support, lead qualification, appointment scheduling, and outbound sales.

The startup says it has now handled more than 1 billion calls through its platform, with usage accelerating as enterprises move more customer interactions onto AI systems. Vapi, Dearsley said, currently processes between 1 million and 5 million calls a day, with enterprise customers accounting for the bulk of that volume.

In addition to Amazon Ring, Vapi’s enterprise customers include Kavak, Instawork, New York Life, UnityAI, Cherry, and Intuit. The startup also operates a self-serve developer platform that has been used by more than 1 million developers.

“Because we started from self-serve and had such a wide developer footprint, we were already battle-tested at significant scale before we signed our first major enterprise customer,” Dearsley said.

Other investors participating in the Series B round included Microsoft’s M12, Kleiner Perkins, and Bessemer Venture Partners, bringing Vapi’s total funding to $72 million. The startup is currently at an annual recurring revenue run rate in the “healthy” eight figures, an investor source told TechCrunch.

Vapi is part of a growing wave of AI voice startups that includes Sierra, Decagon, PolyAI, Bland, Retell, and ElevenLabs, as companies race to build systems capable of handling customer conversations with minimal human involvement. Dearsley said Vapi differentiates itself by focusing less on pre-packaged applications and more on the infrastructure and orchestration layer behind voice agents, particularly for enterprises that want greater control over reliability, compliance, and model behavior.

The startup currently has around 100 employees and plans to use the new funding to expand its engineering, infrastructure, and go-to-market teams.

“The golden problem is taking this indeterminate beast that is a model and taming it,” Dearsley said. “If you can do that, then you can provide value to the world.”

Devil May Cry Netflix Creator Has Good Advice For Bloodborne Movie Team

Adi Shankar has had success in adapting video games into animation, having worked on multiple seasons of Castlevania alongside Konami and Netflix, as well as with Ubisoft for Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. More recently, he has been collaborating with Capcom on Devil May Cry, the first season of which launched on Netflix in 2025 to a largely favorable reception.

Now, with its second season, Shankar and team are delving deeper into the story of Dante and Vergil, as the two characters come to grips with their origins, the divergent paths their lives took following a family tragedy, and how their two perspectives shape them and the fate of a world that hangs in the balance. It also embraces Devil May Cry 2, the video game series’ most divisive entry.

Of course, with as much experience as Shankar has in taking video game source material and adapting it for animation, we would be remiss not to get his perspective on the latest high-profile announcement of a similar project: Sony’s adaptation of From Software’s Bloodborne.

Digg Tries Again, This Time As an AI News Aggregator

Digg is relaunching again, this time as an AI-focused news aggregator rather than the Reddit-style community site it recently abandoned. TechCrunch reports: On Friday evening, the founder previewed a link to the newly redesigned Digg, which now looks nothing like a Reddit clone and more like the news aggregator it once was. This time around, the site is focused on ranking news — specifically, AI news to start. In an email to beta testers, the company said the site’s goal is to “track the most influential voices in a space” and to surface the news that’s actually worth “paying attention to.” AI is the area it’s testing this idea with, but if successful, Digg will expand to include other topics. The email warned that the site was still raw and “buggy,” and was designed more to give users a first look than to serve as its public debut.

On the current homepage, Digg showcases four main stories at the top: the most viewed story, a story seeing rising discussion, the fastest-climbing story, and one “In case you missed it” headline. Below that is a ranked list of top stories for the day, complete with engagement metrics like views, comments, likes, and saves. But the twist is that these metrics aren’t the ones generated on Digg itself. Instead, Digg is ingesting content from X in real-time to determine what’s being discussed, while also performing sentiment analysis, clustering, and signal detection to determine what matters most. […] The site also ranks the top 1,000 people involved in AI, as well as the top companies and the top politicians focused on AI issues.

Vin Diesel confirms Fast & Furious is getting a Yellowstone TV-verse

The family is getting bigger — potentially much bigger. On Monday, Fast and Furious franchise star Vin Diesel (The Fast and the Furious, Fast & Furious) announced that no less than four TV shows in the Fast and Furious “universe” are being developed at Universal Television. One of those is a live-action show heading to NBCUniversal’s Peacock, according to Deadline.

Diesel is reportedly executive producing the series adaptation, with writers Mike Daniels and Wolfe Coleman attached to pen the pilot. Daniels previously wrote for vehicle-based shows Sons of Anarchy and Pan Am, and is writing and producing a revival of The Rockford Files, a TV show that regularly featured car chases and driving sequences. Daniels and Coleman worked together on Shades of Blue, the three-season TV series that starred Jennifer Lopez and Ray Liotta about an NYPD detective going undercover to expose her fellow corrupt cops.

Who’d win in a race, Dominic Toretto in his 1970 Dodge Charger or Lightning McQueen in himself?

Two racers, three tracks, one winner

Details on the Fast and Furious TV spinoffs were not announced, but according to Deadline, Diesel hinted that the shows will expand upon the stories of “the legacy characters” of the franchise. That idea presents the Fast and Furious IP holders with a wealth of options. Consider:

  • Young Dom, which could expand upon the younger version of Dominic Toretto as seen in F9: The Fast Saga. In that film, Dom was played by Vinnie Bennett in flashbacks set in 1989. The story of F9 revealed the death of Jack Toretto, father of Dom and Jakob, which leads to the brothers’ falling out and shoehorned-in feud.
  • Fast and Furious: 1923, a period piece in which a gang of horse-mounted thieves steals combination vinyl platter and wax cylinder phonographs from stagecoaches and gradually adopt the automobile over the course of the series. Presumably, the show would tell the stories of previous-generation Torettos and reveal the Toretto family recipe for tuna salad in its final episode.
  • Fast and Furious: Roman & Tej, a show about Roman (Tyrese Gibson) and Tej (Ludacris) doing silly stuff, such as testing Roman’s immortality theory with deadly new stunts each week and Tej doing computer things. (He could hack the mainframe or upload a virus to the firewall, for example.) This would be a concept driven by witty banter.
  • Fast and Furious: SUV, a show where all the cars driven are exclusively SUVs, a power fantasy for people who will not be able to afford gasoline for their own gas-guzzlers by the time the TV shows come out.

While none of the above ideas are confirmed, they are all, of course, excellent spec pitches that producers Vin Diesel, Sam Vincent, Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Chris Morgan, and Jeff Kirschenbaum should reach out to us to option.

With Universal supposedly committing to four Fast and Furious TV shows, it may be positioning the franchise to be the next Yellowstone, CSI, 9-1-1 or Chicago [Blank], with multiple variations on a common theme and ample crossover opportunity. One could certainly see a Fast and Furious show that focuses not on the high-speed street drivers, but the various governmental task forces charged with hunting them down.

The Fast and Furious franchise has already spun off to television with an animated series, Fast & Furious Spy Racers. The kid-friendly series focused on the adventures of Tony Toretto, the younger cousin of Dominic Toretto, and a group of teenage street racers who are recruited to infiltrate a criminal gang. Fast & Furious Spy Racers streamed on Netflix for 52 episodes.

Diesel and company have famously struggled to deliver the follow-up to Fast X, the 2023 film that is meant to serve as the penultimate entry in the Fast and Furious film franchise. The supposed final F&F film, Fast Forever, is scheduled for release on March 17, 2028.

Chrome’s bookmarks bar refuses to stay hidden in new bug

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • A bug in Chrome v148 is causing the bookmarks bar to appear by default on new tab pages.
  • The bar stays, regardless of whether you hit Ctrl+Shift+B, disable the feature in settings, or disable the flag.
  • The bar will only go away once you navigate to a website.

Google recently rolled out an update for the Chrome browser — version 148. Released on May 5, the new version introduces a few changes, such as lazy loading for video and audio. It also seems to introduce a minor, but very annoying bug that prevents you from hiding the bookmarks bar.

Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority?

google preferred source badge light@2xgoogle preferred source badge dark@2x

Chrome users are hopping on Reddit and Google’s support pages (via PiunikaWeb) to report a new issue with the browser. A bug is forcing the bookmarks bar to appear on the new tab page, even if you typically have the feature hidden. If you don’t have any bookmarks saved, the bar will still appear, but it will be empty.

Usually, you can hide the bookmarks bar by hitting Ctrl+Shift+B or by disabling the feature in settings. However, according to the affected users, neither of these methods appears to work. Even attempting to disable flags like chrome://flags/#ntp-simplification-bookmark-bar seems to have no effect.

Fortunately, this bug only forces the bookmarks bar to appear on the new tab page. Chrome will hide the bar as soon as you navigate to a normal website. However, it’s easy to understand why something like this would be vexing for some.

If you’re running into this bug as well and it bothers you, one user offers a few workarounds. You could try installing an extension that overrides the default new page tab, like Tabliss or Infinity New Tab. There’s also the option of downgrading to Chrome version 147, but this is not recommended as older versions are more vulnerable to security risks.
