This HP laptop is a great MacBook alternative – and it’s 50% off for Memorial Day

HP OmniBook 5

Cesar Cadenas/ZDNET

Memorial Day is tomorrow. There are great deals everywhere you look, and if you’re in the market for a new laptop, you’re in luck because I found one of the best. The HP OmniBook 5 is currently on sale at the brand’s official storefront for $530. That’s 40% off its original price.

Also: My favorite Memorial Day deals: Save big on laptops, tablets, and more

This deal is for a specific configuration of the OmniBook 5. It houses a Qualcomm Snapdragon X processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 256GB SSD. HP has multiple other discounted builds on its website. Another OmniBook 5 configuration that I recommend includes an Intel Core i5-1334U, 8GB of RAM, and a 512TB SSD for $460. While it costs a bit more, the second model’s more powerful hardware is perfect for users who plan on multitasking heavily.

When I reviewed the OmniBook 5 last year, I called it one of the most compelling lightweight laptops of 2025, and that remains true even in 2026. It’s a great alternative to the MacBook Air.

At 2.86 pounds, the laptop is incredibly easy to carry around. You can throw a bag on your way to school, work, or some other third place and hardly know it’s there. The OmniBook 5 also boasts a vibrant 2K OLED panel that delivers rich colors, deep contrast, and sharp image quality. Honestly, it feels like something that belongs on a high-end machine.

Review: HP OmniBook 5

Performance is another strong point. During testing, the laptop handled everything I threw at it with ease. It handled heavy multiasking, photo editing, and AI-powered software without any major issues. Combine all this with a long battery life, and the OmniBook 5 stands out as an excellent choice for students, office professionals, and remote workers who want a premium Windows experience on the go.

How I rated this deal

As per ZDNET’s rating system, I grant this deal a perfect score of 5/5. This laptop excels as a productivity-focused device, perfect for school, work, travel, and everyday use. HP’s OmniBook 5 is a great, reliable machine, and it’s among the first that I suggest whenever someone asks for PC recommendations.

PC gaming’s very own indie-themed Smash Bros. just added the guy from Spelunky, who I now know is named Guy Spelunky

My favorite part of Smash Bros. isn’t even really the fighting. It’s seeing how in the hell you take characters like Minecraft Steve, Pac-Man, and that scum bastard dog from Duck Hunt and turn them into viable fighting game characters. If you feel the same way but wish there was more PC gaming representation in the platform fighting genre, I have great news for you: Guy Spelunky is here.

If you don’t know Guy Spelunky, he’s the guy from Spelunky. If you don’t know Spelunky, it’s the game that Guy Spelunky is from. Sorry, I meant to say that it’s the universally acclaimed roguelike platformer we dubbed one of the best platformers on PC—and the guy from that game is now in Fraymakers, an indie take on Smash Bros. with a PC-centric roster. Developer Team Fray first formed while working on the browser game Super Smash Flash 2. Guy’s joining the likes of Octodad, the Impostor from Among Us, and Hat Kid from A Hat in Time.

7 Ways to Simplify Everyday Tasks With AI for Quick Answers

AI Helps to Simplify Everyday Tasks

Finding information online used to be easy. You typed a question into a search engine, opened a few links, and eventually found what you needed.

Now, getting a straightforward answer can take much longer. Ads appear before actual information, articles stretch for thousands of words, and opening tab after tab quickly becomes frustrating. That’s why more people now use an AI chatbot online when they want answers without jumping between dozens of pages.

Instead of digging through long search results, AI tools can explain ideas, summarize information, and help with everyday tasks through natural conversations.

Here are seven practical ways AI tools make problem-solving easier.

1. Get Clear Answers Without Opening Multiple Tabs

One of the biggest advantages of AI tools is speed. Rather than clicking through several websites, you can ask a direct question and get a clear answer in seconds.

This is especially helpful for everyday tasks, as AI can help simplify everyday tasks like writing professional emails, understanding new topics, or finding cooking substitutions while preparing dinner.

For example, instead of searching:

  • “How to write a polite follow-up email”
  • “Professional email examples”
  • “Formal message template”

You can ask:

“Write a short and polite follow-up email after a job interview.”

The response usually arrives instantly and can be adjusted if needed, giving you a usable answer right away so you can move on with your day.

2. Ask Follow-Up Questions Naturally

Traditional search engines work best with separate keyword searches. Conversational AI feels more like an ongoing dialogue.

Imagine you are planning a trip. Instead of searching for:

  • best places to visit
  • weather conditions
  • local transportation
  • budget ideas

You can keep everything in one conversation and ask follow-up questions as you go.

That makes researching, planning, or learning something new feel easier because you don’t have to start over every time. AI chat-based tools remember context, making the experience feel more natural and less repetitive.

3. Summarize Long Information in Seconds

Long articles and detailed reports can take a lot of time to read. If you just need the key points, AI tools can summarize them in seconds.

This is useful for:

  • study materials
  • meeting notes
  • news articles
  • research papers
  • long email threads

Why spend 30 minutes reading an entire document when you can ask AI to explain the most important ideas in clear language?

If a topic feels difficult at first, AI can break it down before you dive deeper into the details. It can also help organize notes and highlight action items.

You still decide what matters most. AI simply helps you get to the important parts faster.

4. Get Recommendations Based on Your Goals

Traditional search results are often too general for your specific needs. AI assistants can tailor suggestions to your goals, schedule, or preferences.

That means you spend less time sorting through generic advice and more time working with suggestions that actually suit your situation.

If you’re trying to improve your health, you might ask for:

  • beginner-friendly workouts
  • healthy meal ideas
  • simple daily habits
  • realistic fitness schedules

An AI personalized fitness plan can turn those ideas into practical routines based on your  goals, available time, and experience level.

You can also use AI to build study schedules, organize travel plans, or create budgeting routines.

5. Turn Rough Ideas Into Clear Writing

Sometimes the hardest part of writing is getting started.

If you’re staring at a blank page, AI can help you turn rough ideas into something easier to shape and refine. This can save time when you feel stuck or unsure how to phrase something.

You can use AI to:

  • draft an email
  • organize a blog outline
  • polish rough ideas into clearer drafts

For example, you might type:

“Write a friendly birthday message for a coworker.”

Or:

“Help me create a simple outline for a school presentation about climate change.”

The first draft may need edits, but it gives you something to work with instead of starting from scratch.

Adding your own tone and perspective still matters. AI just helps get past the hardest part: starting.

6. Use Voice Questions While Multitasking

Typing is not always convenient. If your hands are busy, voice-based AI tools let you ask questions while continuing what you’re doing.

Voice interactions can feel more natural because you can speak instead of type. This is especially useful when you’re cooking, commuting, or multitasking. For example, you might ask:

  • “What’s a quick pasta recipe with tomatoes?”
  • “How long does rice take to cook?”

Voice-based AI is becoming more common at work.McKinsey & Company reports that customer support agents with AI voice assistance resolved about 15% more cases per hour in a Fortune 500 study, highlighting how AI tools can speed up routine tasks and communication.

7. Organize Everyday Tasks More Efficiently

If your day already feels overloaded, AI can help simplify everyday tasks by organizing them more efficiently and reducing repetitive planning.

Rather than planning everything yourself, you can ask AI to create:

  • shopping lists
  • travel checklists
  • study schedules
  • meal plans
  • work routines
  • productivity systems

This saves time because you start with a structure.

For example, a student might ask:

“Create a simple weekly study plan for math and biology.”

A busy parent could ask:

“Make a grocery list for five easy family dinners.”

Even small tasks feel more manageable when you don’t have to organize everything on your own.

Conclusion

When you need instant information, spending 20 minutes opening tabs and filtering search results can feel unnecessary. Traditional search engines still play an important role, but AI tools help you reach useful information faster.

From summarizing documents to organizing schedules, AI can help simplify everyday tasks and make them feel less stressful.

The best results usually come from combining AI support with your own judgment and creativity. The less time you spend searching for answers, the more time you can spend actually getting things done.

Corsair is putting Chinese RAM in mainstream market. It won’t quite end the crisis though

After months of painfully expensive RAM and SSD prices, the memory market may finally be showing signs of pressure from an unexpected direction: China. New reports suggest that Chinese memory manufacturers are rapidly expanding production of DRAM and NAND chips, and that major hardware brands are starting to take notice. The most notable example so far is Corsair, which has reportedly tested DDR5 memory modules using chips from Chinese DRAM giant ChangXin Memory Technologies, better known as CXMT.

This feels inevitable. Memory prices have remained frustratingly high across PCs, laptops, and storage devices for months. So when Chinese suppliers began offering RAM at nearly half the cost of some global competitors, manufacturers were always going to at least explore the option. According to market reports, some CXMT DDR5 modules are reportedly being sold near the $150 range, while equivalent products from larger global suppliers can hover between $300 and $400.

China’s memory push is suddenly becoming very real

CXMT is no longer some tiny experimental player in the background. The company has reportedly grown to control nearly 8% of the global DRAM market while aggressively ramping up DDR5 production. At the same time, Chinese NAND maker Yangtze Memory Technologies (YMTC) has become a major force in flash storage, with estimates placing its global NAND market share at 11%-13%.

That scale matters because memory pricing is incredibly sensitive to supply. Once cheaper chips start entering the ecosystem in meaningful quantities, global brands gain leverage. Even if companies do not fully switch suppliers, the mere existence of lower-cost alternatives can pressure established players into lowering prices.

Don’t expect dirt cheap RAM overnight

That said, this probably will not instantly “fix” the memory market. Performance consistency, reliability, certifications, firmware stability, and long-term supply agreements still matter enormously for PC makers and enterprise buyers. Established suppliers like Samsung, SK hynix, and Micron Technology still dominate those relationships.

But the pressure is building. If Chinese firms continue expanding production faster than demand grows — especially outside the AI server boom — consumers could finally start seeing more affordable RAM kits, SSDs, and laptops again. Just maybe not as quickly as everyone hopes.

Every Major Way Subnautica 2 Improves on the Original

Blog | Feature

With its blend of deep-sea exploration, crafting, and survival sandbox gameplay, Subnautica quickly became a favourite among players when it launched in 2018. Now, Subnautica 2 from Unknown Worlds Entertainment builds on everything that made the original so memorable, adding a wave of fresh ideas to pull returning players back underwater.

As Subnautica 2 begins its Early Access journey, here is how it is already improving on the original experience.

Subnautica 2 on PC

Unreal Engine 5 Brings More Than Just Better Visuals

One of the biggest changes in Subnautica 2 is the move from Unity to Unreal Engine 5. While that shift obviously means a massive visual upgrade, the benefits go well beyond surface-level improvements.

Thanks to Unreal Engine 5’s Lumen lighting system, the ocean feels incredibly dynamic and atmospheric. Bioluminescence casts light convincingly across the environment, while sunlight filters through the water in a way that reacts naturally to movement on the surface. The result is an underwater world that feels richer, moodier, and far more immersive.

The water itself is also highly reactive. Dynamic currents push both players and vehicles around the environment, turning navigation into a much more active part of survival. In some areas, those currents act as a serious hazard rather than just background detail.

The engine also introduces fresh environmental threats, including Bloom zones. These infected areas are filled with thick, murky fog that limits visibility and makes exploration deeply tense, pushing Subnautica 2 closer to survival horror territory.

Subnautica 2 on PC

Multiplayer Co-op Is Finally Happening

For many fans, this is the big one. After years of requests, Subnautica 2 launches into Early Access with multiplayer co-op for up to four players.

What makes this feature especially impressive is how seamless it is. Players can start a world solo and open it up for friends to join later, without needing to build the whole experience around co-op from the beginning.

Shared progression is another major step forward. Blueprints, databank entries, materials, and recipes are all shared across the group, making teamwork feel meaningful rather than inconvenient.

Better still, players aren’t constantly forced to stay close together. Instead of imposing strict distance limits, Subnautica 2 gives co-op groups the freedom to split up, explore, and tackle tasks in their own way.

Subnautica 2 on PC

Base Building Looks Much More Flexible

Base building has received a major overhaul. The rigid modular construction of the first game is replaced by a flexible procedural building system that gives players far more control over how their bases look and function.

Rather than working within fixed room sizes and limited layouts, players can reshape corridors, rooms, and interiors freely. That opens the door to more personal, creative base designs and makes construction feel less restrictive overall.

There’s also more control over the finishing touches. Interior lighting can be adjusted in greater detail, including both colour and intensity, and a wide variety of window options make it easy to create bases that feel practical, stylish, or both.

Subnautica 2 on PC

Biomods Create New Progression Options

Character progression in the original Subnautica was mostly tied to gear upgrades. In Subnautica 2, that system expands in a much more interesting direction through Biomods.

By harvesting DNA from local wildlife and taking it back to a Biolab, players can unlock mutations that affect how their character develops. These upgrades sit within skill trees and offer active and passive benefits that go beyond simple stat boosts.

That means unlocking improved resistance to water pressure, faster swimming, or better visibility in hazardous areas like Bloom zones. It’s a layered progression system that adds another dimension to exploration and survival.

Subnautica 2 on PC

The Ocean Is More Dangerous Than Ever

The creatures of Subnautica 2 aren’t just threatening in appearance; they are highly advanced in how they behave.

New predators, such as the Collector Leviathan, provide large, intelligent threats that actively hunt players, attack vehicles, and flush explorers out of hiding spots. More broadly, the game’s fauna reacts to a wide range of factors, including prey relationships, water currents, and even the time of day.

This makes the world feel unpredictable and deeply alive – exactly what a game like Subnautica needs.

Subnautica 2 on PC

Meet the Tadpole

The original game’s Seamoth is replaced by a new modular vehicle called the Tadpole, and it is a massive upgrade in terms of flexibility.

Instead of relying on a single all-purpose design, players can swap out the Tadpole’s shell chassis depending on what they need for a particular expedition. A faster setup suits exploration, while a bulkier shell prioritises storage and endurance.

This level of customisation gives players complete control over how they approach each dive, making the vehicle system feel incredibly adaptable.

Final Thoughts

From upgraded visuals and smarter creature behaviour to co-op play, deeper progression systems, and more flexible base building, Subnautica 2 is a meaningful step forward rather than a simple follow-up. With all of these ideas already taking shape at the start of its Early Access journey, it is well on its way to becoming the sequel fans have been waiting for.

John-Paul Jones

Scribbling about videogames since 2005, John-Paul Jones first stoked his love for the industry with the Atari 65XE at the age of four before proceeding onto the ZX Spectrum, Amiga and beyond. These days, he finds himself unreasonably excited about Sega’s Yakuza franchise, foreign cinema and generally trying to keep his trio of sausage dogs from burning his house down. Clearly, he is living his best life right now.

Crying over Final Fantasy 10 was one of the moments that inspired the creator of a PS3 classic to make games: “It’s so beautiful and it’s so melancholy”

Jenova Chen – the designer of indie classics such as Flower and Journey – was partly inspired to begin making games in the first place after shedding a few tears over Final Fantasy 10, and who can blame him with a love story that tragic?

Final Fantasy is a series stuffed with emotional moments and scenes that feel like someone’s squeezing onion juice over your eyes, but Final Fantasy 10 still features one of the strongest tearjerker endings in the entire franchise (and in all of gaming, according to Japanese gamers.) Tears generated by the game are so powerful, in fact, that they inadvertently led to the creation of a stone cold PS3 classic.

SolarSquare in talks to raise up to $60M as India’s rooftop solar market draws major VC interest

SolarSquare, an Indian rooftop solar startup that helps households and housing societies adopt solar power, is in advanced talks to raise fresh capital after securing India’s largest solar venture investment in December 2024, TechCrunch has learned.

B Capital and Lightspeed Venture Partners are set to co-lead the Series C round, which could value SolarSquare at between $450 million and $500 million and bring in $55 million to $60 million in new investment, according to multiple people familiar with the matter. That would represent more than a doubling of SolarSquare’s valuation in roughly 18 months — a sign of how rapidly investor conviction is building around India’s residential solar market.

Lightspeed Venture Partners previously led SolarSquare’s $40 million Series B round at around a $200 million post-money valuation in December 2024. This time, according to a source, it’s investing through its growth fund, which has backed names such as Razorpay — India’s leading digital payments platform — and Zepto, the fast-delivery startup.

Existing investor Elevation Capital is also expected to participate in the deal, which is currently in advanced stages and is expected to close next month. The terms could still change as the financing has not yet been finalized. SolarSquare has raised $61.1 million in equity financing to date, per the startup data platform Tracxn.

India has set a target of achieving 500 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2030, with solar expected to contribute more than half of that total. The country became the world’s third-largest solar power producer in 2025, trailing only China and the U.S. Its cumulative installed solar capacity has surged from about 3 GW in 2014 to more than 150 GW in 2026, aided partly by government incentives and subsidy schemes aimed at accelerating rooftop solar adoption.

Mumbai-headquartered SolarSquare, founded in 2015, is positioning itself as a full-stack residential solar platform in a market that remains highly fragmented, dominated by small local installers and dealer networks tied to component manufacturers such as Tata Power, Waaree Energies, Luminous Power Technologies, and Exide Industries. The startup designs, installs, and maintains rooftop solar systems for homes, housing societies (the apartment complexes and gated communities common across urban India), and enterprises, and has installed more than 150 megawatts of solar capacity with a presence across 29 cities in nine states, per its website.

SolarSquare has powered nearly 50,000 homes and around 400 housing societies, according to a source. The startup has also deployed rooftop solar systems for large enterprises including Swiggy, Zepto, and iD Fresh Food.

Residential customers and housing societies now account for a majority of SolarSquare’s business, according to people familiar with the startup’s operations, as the startup has increasingly scaled back lower-margin industrial rooftop solar projects in recent years.

The startup has crossed an annualized revenue run rate of more than ₹10 billion (around $104 million) across homes and housing societies combined, according to a source familiar with the matter. It also aims to reach 200 megawatts in its residential solar portfolio this year, the source added.

SolarSquare declined to comment. B Capital, Lightspeed Venture Partners, and Elevation Capital did not respond to requests for comment.

Apple Preparing New ‘Gen AI’ Website Ahead of WWDC

Apple is readying the subdomain genai.apple.com, according to MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, but it does not yet lead to a live web page. The genai.apple.com subdomain has been added to Apple’s domain name servers a few weeks ahead of Apple’s annual developers conference WWDC, where the company has promised to announce “AI advancements” across its software platforms.

Apple Intelligence General Feature 2
Apple’s website already has an Apple Intelligence page, so it is unclear what the company’s plans are for genai.apple.com at this time. The subdomain certainly is a reference to “generative ai” which has been popularized by ChatGPT and Claude in recent years.

Apple’s next major software releases like iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 are expected to include many new Apple Intelligence features, including a more personalized version of Siri with on-screen awareness. Similar to other chatbots like ChatGPT, a dedicated Siri app will reportedly allow users to have back-and-forth conversations.

Apple Intelligence will power a wide range of new accessibility features, such as automatic captions for videos recorded with an iPhone. In addition, Voice Control is gaining support for natural language, allowing users to say things like “tap the guide about best restaurants” in Apple Maps or “tap the purple folder” in the Files app.

Apple Intelligence will make it easier for users to create shortcuts in the Shortcuts app, and it will power a new “Create a Pass” option in the Wallet app. Safari will be able to automatically name tab groups, and Visual Intelligence will be able to scan food nutrition labels and add information from a business card or paperwork to the Contacts app.

Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote begins on Monday, June 8 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time.
