T-Mobile Just Quietly Killed Its Better Value Phone Plan After Less Than a Year

T-Mobile launched new mobile plans this week by announcing “Nothing,” referring to the new EIP Flex 36 installment plan, with which you can get a new device for zero money down, not even taxes on the phone.

But nothing is also what’s available if you wanted to sign up for T-Mobile’s recent Better Value plan, which the company rolled out in January and just removed on Tuesday when it launched its “2.0” plans.

From the start, Better Value was listed as a limited-time offer, but T-Mobile never provided an end date. It was last available on T-Mobile’s site on Monday, as shown by the Internet Archive.

“Our Better Value plan was a limited-time offer for eligible customers,” a T-Mobile spokesperson said. “Nothing changes for current customers on the plan. With the launch of our new plans, that offer is no longer available to new customers.”

Those currently on the Better Value plan won’t see any change unless they choose to switch to a different plan, such as the similar Experience More 2.0 plan, if they want to take advantage of the new 36-month financing options.

The Better Value plan was very close to the existing Experience More plan, including the price at $140 for three lines, for example. They both included unlimited high-speed 5G data and T-Mobile’s five-year price guarantee.

But a few other features of Better Value were superior to Experience More. You got 250GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data, compared to 60GB. T-Mobile’s highest tier plan, Experience Beyond 2.0, includes unlimited high-speed hotspot data.

When traveling to Canada and Mexico, the amount of high-speed data was a more generous 30GB versus the 15GB of Experience More. Better Value also had T-Satellite service included, whereas that’s a $10 add-on with Experience More.

However, Better Value also had a few serious requirements that seemed designed to pull customer groups from other carriers.

For people switching, it required signing up for three or more lines, two of which had to be eligible numbers ported to the new plan. Existing T-Mobile customers could sign up for Better Value, but they had to have been on a T-Mobile postpaid plan for at least five years.

Types of 3D Modeling in Architecture: Direct, Parametric, BIM & Point Cloud Explained

Now that the world has transitioned to digitalization, the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) sector is no longer confined to traditional, manual flat blueprints. It has now evolved into three-dimensional and interactive models, making a dramatic advance in the competitive markets. It could be overwhelming to adapt to a certain digitalization tool since it is also a strategic business decision.

Choosing a tool can have a direct impact on the project’s success. To do it right, it is best to stick to what the project needs. There are four pillars of modern modeling: direct, parametric, Building Information Modeling (BIM), and Point Cloud Scanning. Each has its competitive strengths and role in the industry, and it could be overwhelming to take it all on. CAD Crowd can help in simplifying this by connecting the businesses to specialized freelancers, suitable for their project needs.

The evolution of architectural visualization

The evolution from hand-drawn sketches to highly detailed 3D digital models has been one of the most remarkable in the field. It has really come a long way and greatly influenced different sectors. Modernization of the visualization tools allows the architects and designers to produce a clear and realistic 3D representation, letting the viewers easily understand how it will look, function, and feel in real life even before the construction starts. It has made life a lot easier, especially for stakeholders who have limited technical knowledge, since they can now visualize it easily instead of trying to fit in all the different 2D drawings.

Defining 3D modeling in AEC

In the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, 3D modeling is transforming all information into a three-dimensional digital representation of the building or structure. Instead of trying to piece together multiple 2D technical drawings, it can now be easily visualized how all elements interact with each other. This is much convenient for both the technical team and stakeholders to grasp even the most complex ideas. AEC can choose whichever modeling tool is suitable based on the project’s needs, such as direct modeling, parametric modeling, BIM, and point cloud. Utilizing 3D models can make the designs easier to understand, create an efficient collaboration, and successfully bring the project to success.

The core methodology: direct modeling

One of the most straightforward modeling techniques is Direct modeling. It is about direct manipulation of the shapes and geometry without reliance on complex rules or parameters. In this approach, one can quickly and directly alter and reshape the model by pushing, pulling, and resizing the elements in real time. Its remarkable trait is its flexibility and how it can be used in an intuitive way, making it easier and more convenient to use, especially at times when fast editing is needed. The downside is that it may not always store detailed data, unlike parametric and BIM, and due to this, this approach is often used alongside it, depending on the project needs.

Advantages of the direct approach

The direct modeling approach has been known to offer several practical advantages, which are more applicable and useful at the early stages of architectural design. Its flexibility allows architects and designers to work quickly and intuitively. This means they can work around the model without having to deal with complex constraints and rules. Its strength and flexibility have allowed designers to easily alter layouts and explore more design ideas based on client feedback. It has remarkably stood out because it is simple and direct, keeping the design smooth and free, and helping in moving forward with ease.

Direct modeling software options

In projects that face tight deadlines in early stages, designers opt to apply Direct Modeling to their work. There are different CAD software programs that can allow them to directly reshape and manipulate 3D models quickly and intuitively, all without having to deal with complex constraints and parameters. Popular software includes Creo Direct, Shapr3D, and other CAD platforms with direct editing features. These tools are easy to learn and support collaboration by making the models easier to share and modify.

The power of algorithmic logic

Algorithmic logic is an approach that makes use of rules, formulas and even advanced programmed instructions to generate design elements. In this approach, certain parameters were set to automate the change in the design instead of manually tweaking and adjusting every model element. Algorithmic logic has a close relation to parametric modeling as it allows design generation that is more dynamic and responsive. This means having an automated update when a certain condition is met. For instance, if there is an update in a dimension, the whole model will adjust.

Generative design and parameters

In Generative Design, designers make use of set rules and parameters such as spacing, size, materials, and even environmental conditions to automate and generate several design options. This is considered an advanced approach since it makes data-driven decisions from the given rules and constraints. One of its strengths is how it has improved coordination between building systems, making it easy to address issues. Due to its complexity, designers have a deeper understanding of how geometry and spatial relationships work, as well as suitable materials and construction methods for the project.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) basics

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is not just about making a 3D model, but it works as an advanced modeling approach since it contains more detailed information about every part of the building and instructions. It doesn’t only contain geometrical shapes pieced together but also includes its materials, cost, and even construction timeline. It is a powerful project management tool used to track the early stages through the post-construction stages.

BIM vs. standard 3D modeling

BIM and standard 3D modeling are sometimes mistaken for being the same since it actually feels similar, since both create a digital representation of the building, but each has a different function and purpose. A standard 3D model is more about how the building will look; it translates ideas and concepts into a realistic model. The Building Information Modeling (BIM) process goes beyond the visualization as it contains deeper information about each building element. It has materials specifications, quantities, and schedule information. BIM is more of a project management tool shared among multiple teams for collaborative work.

Collaborative workflows in BIM

bim-point-cloud-and-parametric-modeling-explained

Since BIM can serve as a project management tool, it can be shared across multiple teams and have them work on the shared model. This makes collaboration a lot easier and seamless since the updates are done in real time, which prevents longer lead times and reduces misunderstandings. It also helps in early detection of clashes and addresses them right away to prevent further issues that could affect the project schedule. BIM stands out because of its multi-disciplinary coordination, making it an organized and accurate design model.

Understanding point cloud technology

Point cloud technology is an approach that captures the exact real-world conditions of a space by using 3D scanning tools or laser scanning. This means it does not necessarily draw from scratch but makes use of what’s already existing and produces a digital copy out of it. From there, the scans can produce not just thousands but millions of points in 3D space, which can form a “point cloud”.  This data is then used as a reference in generating accurate models.

Scan-to-BIM applications

Real-world buildings and structures can be converted into a usable BIM model by using 3D scanning data. This process is called Scan-to-BIM. The data used could be from a point cloud technology; it conveniently connects what already exists into a detailed digital model. To do this, the target space is scanned using laser scanners, catching precise data points. Then, these points are processed and will be converted into a detailed BIM model that the design team can work on. It helps in generating models with accurate real-world information.

Choosing the right tool for the phase

Choosing the right tool can significantly improve efficiency at work since each tool is stage-based. For instance, a project in the early design stage can use direct modeling since it is fast and flexible. It allows easy and intuitive editing. In project development, parametric modeling can be used, which allows control over the relationship of the elements in the building. Once the project progresses into construction planning, more detailed information is carried out and can be stored in BIM. And when there is a need to incorporate existing structures, it can be scanned and converted into a digital model, and point cloud technology is used.

Cost implications of advanced modeling

It is expected that using advanced 3D modeling methods has its cost implications. It could appear costly upfront, but it is a strategic way to increase long-term project efficiency and lessen costs in the project lifecycle. Using design models can help in reducing design errors before construction even begins. This alone can help in minimizing material and resource wastage, lessening rework costs. It helps not only in saving money but also in improving the planning and construction strategy by making it more efficient. Having advanced modeling strengthens confidence and trust with the client, seeing how well the project is handled.

Enhancing client communication

A significant role of 3D modeling in architecture is how it can improve communication between designers and clients. Instead of having the client piece together complicated technical drawings, designers can easily show a clear visual representation, which is a lot easier to understand. It helps better in visualizing the project and speeds up decision making based on the presentations since they can easily give feedback. Using a 3D models enhance not only the communication but also strengthens the relationship between designers and client, making the client feel more confident and involved throughout the project.

The future of digital construction

Now that the world is embracing and adapting to modernization, the architecture and engineering industry leans toward digital construction, wherein most of the planning, design, and coordination is done digitally. This is to prevent costly problems that can be detected during the design phase instead of addressing It during the construction phase. The direction of AEC is towards utilization of more advanced tools to help in delivering more accurate and efficient project outcomes, in the most feasibly and cost-friendly way. It encourages planning, designing, and building smarter, allowing for more efficient project management.

Sustainability and modeling

Sustainability compliance has been one of the priorities some projects targets to. This can be achieved more efficiently by applying digital modeling methods such as BIM, parametric modeling, direct modeling, and point cloud. These modeling tools can help in making smarter design options that can reduce environmental impact while still maintaining good design and functionality. It does not only improve the visual appeal but makes sure that it aligns with sustainability standards.

Structural integrity simulations

In BIM and parametric modeling, structural integrity simulation can be done to test whether the building is structurally stable and safe. Instead of producing prototypes design to test the materials and its performance, a digital test can be done to simulate real-life forces like wind, weight, and earthquake. It can easily optimize materials to make the design a lot safer, more efficient, and more reliable.

RELATED: Features and Benefits of BIM Services for Architectural Design Companies

Materials research in 3D

It could be time-consuming to assess physical materials and evaluate its suitability to the project. Instead of relying on the tedious process, 3D allows designers to explore and simulate material performance under different conditions. This can help them evaluate easily which material works best under heat, pressure, and moisture. This helps designers decide on which materials are not only visually appealing but also durable, safe, and cost-effective.

Real-time visualization benefits

One of the cause of delays in planning and design phase is the long turnaround time for approval and feedback with the design. Real-time visualization allows a more efficient way of collaboration among the team since everyone can immediately see the progress in the design model and they can add in their feedback. Whenever an update is made, it can also be seen by others. This promotes fast and confident decision-making.

VR walkthroughs for architects

Virtual Reality (VR) walkthroughs have given everyone a unique experience by being fully immersive in a 3D environment of the project before it is even built. No more trying to piece together plain technical drawings or 3D images, users can now walk through the interactive space by using a VR headset and feel like they’re physically present inside the design. Through this, they can also visualize how the space, lighting and layout function and provide comments and feedback.

RELATED: Top Tips You Need to Know for Choosing a BIM Company for Architectural Design & CAD Services Firms

AR for on-site construction

Augmented Reality (AR) when used in construction allows the engineers and architects to see how the digital design sits with the actual physical area in real time. This approach is about overlaying the digital 3D model directly onto the real site. It can be done by using tablets or AR glasses. This allows them to see speed up inspections and quality checks since they can see if there are fixes that has to be done. It improves not only efficiency but accuracy in works.

3D printing for architectural models

By using a specialized printing machines, architects and designers can create physical scale models instead of manually building mock-ups. This is called 3D printing. It is a process of direct printing an accurate mini version of the structure from digital models such as CAD or BIM. It helps in creating tangible models that are accurate, making it easier to grasp the architectural concept.

understanding-direct-parametric-bim-point-cloud-modeling

Level of Development (LOD) explained

Level of Development (LOD) is an established system of how detailed and complete a 3D model is at a specific or certain stage. This helps the team to know where they are at and to check if their progresses are on time. It also sets expectations for project outcomes and avoids confusion about design accuracy. It tells how “finished” a certain design is depending on its stage. This serves as a standard to set boundaries and clearly define what stage each part of the model is in.

Cloud-based collaboration platforms

There are instances wherein there’s a limitation to collaboration because of varying work locations. This can be addressed with Cloud-based Collaboration wherein a model is shared, and the team can work together on the same project remotely. This is a more efficient and smart approach to streamline communication and reduce delays. The design progress reflects real-time and avoids software version conflicts. It makes the whole process more organized and easier to manage.

Managing large-scale point clouds

Managing large scale point cloud projects could mean dealing with a massive data to be handled and managed. To make it work, the design team should be able to simplify the 3D scan and accurately capture existing site conditions. It has to be carefully cleaned and organized before converting into design models like BIM. It is a complex process but it can be managed by a professional who knows how to process and cleanup large datasets smartly.

Photogrammetry vs. LiDAR

In doing point cloud, photogrammetry and LiDAR are two commonly used techniques to capture real-life environment before converting into an accurate model. Photogrammetry is more on about taking several overlapping photos of a space. This is a more affordable choice and is often suitable for small scale projects. While LIDAR is a laser scanning tool to capture exact dimensions and generate a highly accurate data. It is much precise and is suitable for large and complex projects.

Lighting design simulations

To simulate lighting natures, digital tools can be done to check the interaction between natural and artificial light inside the building. It is hard to imagine and just visualize how bright or comfortable a space could just by looking at model. It is much helpful and useful to simulate it in a BIM to test and adjust light, whichever is more suitable for the building. Using digital tools to simulate lighting layout helps in predicting and controlling how much light is needed in the space to make it not just appealing but more comfortable.

Acoustic analysis in 3D

Acoustic Analysis in 3D allows designers to explore and simulate how the sound behaves within the space. This prevents reliance to guessing on how sound travels and reflects within the building. Through Acoustic Analysis in 3D, designers would be able to predict and adjust how the sound behaves in the building, making it a lot more comfortable.

Seismic modeling for safety

Seismic modeling makes it easier for the designers to simulate and test how a building can withstand an earthquake. Safety and stability are important in a building, so having it tested is one of the most important processes to ensure that it is ready to be occupied. Although the structural performance can be predicted through calculations, it is reassuring to see how it performs in real-life conditions. In seismic modeling, instead of trying more values to check, it optimizes and adjusts the structural design to come up with a stronger and more stable option.

Urban planning and 3D GIS

architectural-3d-modeling-techniques-for-modern-design

In Urban Planning with 3D Geographic Information Systems (GIS), an entire urban area is visualized in 3D by using digital mapping and 3D modeling tools. This approach helps everyone to understand how the building stands and behaves within a specific area and allows a smarter and more sustainable urban development. It helps in improving the planning decisions based on the geographical date of the city.

RELATED: Why 3D Modeling Is Important For Constructing Architectural Projects By Companies

The rise of digital nomads in AEC

The world has now increased the number of remote workers, and this includes professionals in the AEC industry. Working remotely has been one of the growing trends in the industry and so having cloud-shared model makes it a smarter approach to collaborate. All designers and engineers can seamlessly work on one shared model despite the distances, while maintaining the file secured and safe. It allows multiple disciplines to align within the shared workspace.

Storage solutions for point clouds

One of the challenges in using Point Clouds is how it uses with large storage because it contains millions to billons of scanned points. To address this, it can be efficiently stored by using cloud-based storage platforms or dedicated servers. It is important to know how to handle large storage data to avoid slowing down the system and maintain data management. It keeps the work smoother and efficient and enables access across multiple teams remotely.

Open-source modeling software

There are design tools that allow free usage of available design models that can be used by architects or designers. This is known as Open-source modeling software. Generally, it is a useful platform, especially for beginners and students, since it is readily available and provides a flexible alternative in creating and managing models. It is also cost-effective since it is free and reduces operational costs.

High-resolution texturing

It is possible to apply detailed surface visuals and material finishes in digital models to make it look more realistic and accurate. Doing this digitally creates a simulation of how the building visually look like when constructed. It improves the accuracy of the presentation and helps client understand the look and feel of the material finishes once built.

Traditionally, sustainable design can be done by calculating manually and predicting its energy consumption. Digital models can efficiently provide sustainable design options to minimizing the environmental impact by incorporating it into workflows like IM, parametric modeling, direct modeling, and point cloud-based design. These approaches focus on being able to optimize the materials and building performance during early design stage instead of dealing it during construction or post construction.

Parametric facade systems

Façade can be altered through rules and constraints. This approach is called Parametric facade systems, wherein a façade can be generated by defined inputs and parameters such as sunlight exposure, wind directions, energy performance goals, and even building orientation. It makes the system a lot more flexible to edit in case needed. It explores multiple design options through responsive automation.

RELATED: Cad Crowd Freelance Experts: Transform Reverse Engineering with 3D Scan-to-CAD Services for your Company

Dynamic design parameters

Dynamic design parameters combine BIM and parametric modeling since they treat the model as an adaptive system that can respond based on given parameters. Instead of manually editing and converting it into a 3D model, the designers can set rules and parameters to make it into a model that can be adjusted accordingly by a set of values. This approach significantly reduces redesign work and improves responsiveness to design changes.

Automated quantity takeoffs

One of the most useful features of using BIM is its ability to generate a quantity takeoff of the building. Usually, quantity takeoffs are done by collating all drawings and counting the materials by work packages. This could take a lot of time especially if the project is large-scale. BIM can efficiently generate a takeoff of the materials and reduces human error. It can also update the quantities should there be a design/material change. This is a game-changer since it is a cost-effective tool.

Clash detection algorithms

Sometimes clashes are overlooked and can only be seen during the construction stage, which could mean costly reworks. This can be avoided with Clash detection algorithms, wherein digital tools are used to spot overlaps in the system before construction starts. Most of the systems clashing include structural, architectural, and MEP. The designers of multiple disciplines can work on the shared model space and point out clashes and fix them in real time, reducing costly on-site rework and delays.

OpenAI says it slowed Astra model development over security concerns

OpenAI said Friday it has suspended work on some aspects of its upcoming model Astra after an internal review found it had made significant advancements in agentic coding and cybersecurity — enough to warrant concern over its capabilities.

OpenAI said in a blog post Friday that this model, which is still in development, reached its “critical cybersecurity threshold,” meaning it could independently identify and carry out cyberattacks against traditionally well-protected real-world systems. Under the company’s “Preparedness Framework,” which it created in 2023, this triggered additional safeguards.

“While we continue to benchmark and assess this model, our preliminary evaluations indicate strong enough performance that we cannot rule out Critical capability level at this time,” OpenAI wrote. “Astra is an upcoming model, and was not involved in exploiting Hugging Face.”

The disclosure highlights an unusual moment in the topsy-turvy and still nascent frontier AI labs sector. Companies across every industry hold back products over potential risks, including for safety and cybersecurity concerns. But they rarely announce those decisions publicly when it’s a product that is still under development.

In this case, OpenAI is already under scrutiny after a different unreleased model breached Hugging Face’s systems during internal testing — the first verifiable incident of an AI lab losing control of its model. Since then, OpenAI and AI labs such as Anthropic have disclosed other incidents in which AI models breached their sandboxes and posed threats during cybersecurity tests.

The string of cases — seems like a new disclosure every day now — has triggered varying reactions from cybersecurity experts, lawmakers, and the AI labs themselves. Some express fear and call for stricter oversight. But there’s also a bit of flexing. In certain circles, any AI lab with a model that has that kind of capability will be seen as an impressive advancement.

OpenAI said it was sharing this information because it believes “it’s important to be transparent with the public and the safety and security communities about this potential shift in capabilities.”

The AI lab said it’s also taking action, including enacting stricter security controls and pausing internal activities involving Astra that don’t meet these beefed guardrails. OpenAI said it is working with relevant government agencies and “select AI safety organizations” to test the capabilities for this model.

Chargers are the lifeblood of modern tech, and things have moved along a lot since the days of the small USB-A wall wart that could push out half an amp of power. Nowadays, we want a charger that has multiple ports and can handle hundreds of watts of output.

Also: Duress passcodes explained: How they work and why they can land you in court

Handling all that power means that there’s a lot of effort put into safety and cooling, so modern chargers have a lot of technology built into them to handle this. Then there’s the issue of keeping the user in the loop. When you’re charging multiple devices, it’s good to keep an eye on whether everything is charging as it should.

After all, you might have used a damaged cable or one that’s not as fast as it should be.

You need less of a charger and more of a charging station or, if you want to be fancy, a charging computer. And this is exactly what the Satechi ChargeView 240W charger brings to your desk. I’ve had a chance to go hands-on with this charger before its official release date.

The younger, bigger sibling

The ChargeView 240W is a follow-on from the smaller 4-port ChargeView 140W, and it carries forward everything that was good about the 140W version and brings even more to the table.

Also: The 7 tech travel hacks I swear by – after years of learning the hard way

A problem I have with many high-power desktop chargers is that they are big, brick-like lumps that loom over your desk. Take the Ugreen Nexode 500W charger, a huge charger with a colossal power output. It’s a big, heavy, hulking gray brick. It looks great in a lab-style or industrial setting — or on my desk, where it’s among all the other clutter — but there’s nothing stylish about it.

I love the Ugreen Nexode 500W charger, but it's a big, gray brick.

I love the Ugreen Nexode 500W charger, but it’s a big, gray brick.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET

Also, while the Nexode 500W is a very capable charger, able to squeeze out more than twice the power of the ChargeView 240W, it has nothing in the way of an interface. There’s a light on it to show that it’s on, and there are a bunch of ports.

I’ve plenty of stories of plugging things into this charger only to find that they didn’t charge because I’d done something dumb, like not plugging the cable in right, or I’d charged something at super-slow speeds because I’d used some scabby old cable off my desk.

A cool screen

Where the ChargeView 240W excels is that it has a display that shows real-time data for each port. The display can be configured to show the power output for each port separately or the combined power output for all the ports.

But, and this is something some other makers would learn from, the display powers down after a minute of inactivity, only powering up again when you plug something in or press the button. So, you don’t have a screen facing you all the time (I know how my eye is drawn to any screen in the room, no matter how small).

The screen is neat!

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET

The charger can be used either horizontally or vertically on the desk, and the included stand works great in both orientations. You can switch the orientation of the display using the little button on the top of the unit — yes, a physical button, so you’re not having to mess about with a touchscreen.

There are a lot of companies out there that can make a decent charger, but so many just don’t want to put in the extra effort to make an excellent product.

USB-C only

There are six USB ports on the ChargeView 240W, and all of them are USB-C, so this is a charger built for modern workloads. But if you have the odd USB-A charging cable that you still need to use, you can always use an adapter.

Also: You’ve been using your power bank wrong, and airline rules make that obvious

The six USB-C ports are arranged into three banks of two. The first two are capable of 140W max, the second pair can deliver up to 100W max, and the final two can deliver up to 30W max. When you use more than one port, the charger will output the maximum power that each device can take, up to the charger’s overall 240W maximum.

So, for example, you can have a MacBook pulling 140W from the first port and another laptop drawing 100W from the second, or you can have six devices all connected at once, with the first two ports handling up to 70W apiece, the next two ports handling 30W each, and the last two handling up to 20W each.

If you're 100% USB-C or you have an adapter, this charger has you covered.

If you’re 100% USB-C or you have an adapter, this charger has you covered.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET

I’ve tested all the outputs, and the charger has no problem at all delivering full power.

And since I know that people will ask, yes, 70W is only half of the 140W that a modern laptop can draw, but it’s enough for charging and keeping a laptop topped up during a working day.

Advanced charging

Satechi has also packed this charger with the latest charging tech, with the two high-power ports supporting Power Delivery 3.2, a protocol that supports AVS (Adjustable Voltage Supply) alongside PPS (Programmable Power Supply).

Without boring you with the technical details, what this means is that no matter what device you plug into the charger, you get the best, fastest, and safest charge possible. It also means that it supports the fastest charging possible for the latest iPhone.

The remaining four ports all support Power Delivery 3.0 PPS, making them ideal for all your other power-hungry devices.

As with all modern chargers that have to negotiate power transfer speeds, when you plug in a new device to charge, it’s normal for charging to be temporarily interrupted for a few seconds. I know this worries a lot of people, but rest assured that everything is working the way it should.

Does it get hot?

The other thing that I get asked about a lot when it comes to chargers is heat. And given that I know just how hot some chargers can get, I understand why people worry about this.

Also: I tested a 4TB quantum-resistant USB drive – but you don’t have to spend $3000 for this much security

Yes, but it's nothing to worry about.

Yes, but it’s nothing to worry about.

Adrian Kingsley-Hughes/ZDNET

Yes, I’ve had periods where the charger got warm, but there was never anything to worry about, and it seems very well engineered to dissipate heat generated by the internal power supply and charging circuitry (as long as you don’t do something dumb like bury it under a pile of papers or throw a duvet over it).

But even if it gets warm, it has three built-in modes that allow it to throttle charging to cool the unit down.

Nitpicks

I’m very impressed by this charger, but if you allow me to be annoyingly nitpicky for a moment, there are a couple of things that I’d change. I’d love to be able to keep the display on all the time (I know my eyes would be drawn to it, but it’s cool as long as it’s not used on a nightstand), and I’d also like to see real-time internal temperature readings, again, just because that would be cool.

The competition

The ChargeView 240W isn’t without competition, but I’ve not reviewed anything that overlaps it completely. Ugreen has the Nexode Pro 300W, an 8-port charger (this has six USB-C ports, one USB-A port, and a DC port that I never hear much call for) for $170, and Anker has the 6-port Prime Charging Station (four USB-C ports and two USB-A ports) for $150.

I find the interfaces for both of these busier, either making use of multiple buttons or a knob, and neither can be set vertically. But these do offer different port layouts, so one might suit you better.

ZDNET’s buying advice

The Satechi ChargeView 240 is currently available for preorder and will be released August 11. It’s priced at $150, which is competitive for a charger of this caliber and with this feature set.

Don’t need six ports? Pick up the baby 4-port version for $100, which gives you a pair of 140W max ports (one supporting PD 3.2 with AVS and the other PD 3.1 with PPS) and another pair of 40W max ports (both supporting PD 3.1 with PPS).

For those with a more modest number of gadgets, this will be enough and will save you a good chunk of change (to spend on some decent cables, perhaps?).

Big Walk number puzzle: A few small hints and the full solution

Early on in Big Walk, as you and your pals are scurrying around the world solving puzzles, you might come across a curious sight: a structure near the beach with an oblong prize (here at PC Gamer we call it a nubbin) inside a frosted glass container. Hanging on a hook above it: a sign with some numbers on it. Curious!

You’ve probably already seen a nubbin in a similar container, which could only be accessed when one of your companions held down a button in a nearby location. But what do these two four-digit numbers mean? And where’s the button?

Take-Two CEO says he expects the games industry to be in ‘commercial streaming mode within 3 years,’ which is great news if you hate owning things

During Take-Two’s latest earnings call, CEO Strauss Zelnick said the current computing hardware crisis—you know, the one that’s making it more economical to fly roundtrip from the UK to buy an MSRP GPU at Nvidia‘s QuakeCon booth than it is to buy one anywhere online—is, to quote the man directly, “not a good thing.”

But while the skyrocketing costs of consoles and components are threatening to price customers out of the pastime, Zelnick said Take-Two doesn’t see increasingly inaccessible gaming hardware as an insurmountable problem. In part, that’s because Rockstar’s parent company expects a lot more of us will be streaming games in the near future.

The “advent of streaming,” Zelnick said, is something that Take-Two believes is “right around the corner, in terms of having something that’s low latency and really works well for consumers. Machines that weren’t game machines before will become game machines.”

The Pixel 11 is almost here, but I’m more excited about what could come with it

It’s August, which means one thing if you follow smartphones even remotely closely: new Pixels are almost here. Google is holding its next Made by Google event on August 12, and this year, we’re expecting another packed lineup of phones. The Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold are all expected to take the stage. Yes, that’s the same four-phone lineup Google gave us last year, but the interesting part will obviously be what’s changing underneath. Between the usual camera improvements, new hardware, and whatever AI tricks Google has been cooking up, there should be plenty to talk about.

And the phones may only be part of the story. Google is expected to have a few more announcements up its sleeve, making this one of its biggest hardware events of the year. So, if you’re planning to tune in, here’s when the Made by Google event starts, how you can watch it, and everything we expect Google to announce.

Google’s Pixels are getting their glow on

First up, and probably the reason most people will be tuning in, is the Pixel 11 series. At this point, though, Google may not have many surprises left to pull out of its pocket. The phones have leaked extensively over the past few months, and if those leaks are accurate, anyone hoping for a dramatic redesign might want to temper their expectations. From everything we’ve seen so far, Google appears to be sticking with the design language it established with the Pixel 10 family. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing — I quite like the current Pixel look. Still, the Pixel 11 series probably won’t be one of those upgrades you can immediately identify from across the room. There is one addition that could make it stand out, though. Google has already teased a new light built into the camera bar, reportedly called HiLight or Pixel Glow. It appears to borrow its look from Gemini’s rainbow-like visual language, potentially lighting up while you’re interacting with Gemini or waiting for the AI to finish thinking. But I’m much more curious about what Google does with it beyond AI. Imagine different colors appearing for notifications, charging status, timers, or even incoming calls. If Google gives developers access to it, that little light could end up being far more useful for users.

The bigger changes should be happening inside. Google’s new Tensor G6 chip is expected to power the Pixel 11 lineup, replacing the Tensor G5 from last year. A faster processor is always welcome, but raw performance isn’t really what I’m interested in here. After using recent Pixels extensively, I want to see how the G6 behaves when you’re actually pushing the phone — shooting photos and videos, navigating on mobile data, jumping between apps, or simply using it outside on a hot afternoon. Better thermal management would mean much more to me than another impressive-looking benchmark score. Battery life and charging are equally high on my list. Samsung has finally started embracing silicon-carbon battery technology and faster charging with its Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, so I’d love to see Google make similar progress rather than playing things safe for another generation. A phone can have all the AI features in the world, but none of them are particularly exciting when you’re hunting for a charger halfway through the day. Then there’s the price. Android Headlines has reported that the Pixel 11 Pro could start at $1,099 in the US and €1,199 in Europe. If accurate, that would make the US model $100 more expensive than the Pixel 10 Pro, which launched at $999. The reported colors are Dune, Light Fog, Midnight Haze, and Pine, although those names apparently aren’t finalized yet. Still, with Google’s event only days away, I wouldn’t treat any leaked pricing or naming as gospel. We won’t have to wait much longer to find out what the Pixel 11 series actually costs — and, more importantly, whether Google has done enough this year to justify paying more for one.

Finally, a Pixel for your keys

Next up is easily the announcement I’m most excited about: the Pixel Tag. Google has somehow gone this long without making its own Bluetooth tracker, but if the recent leak spotted by 9to5Google is accurate, that could finally change at this year’s event. And honestly, it’s about time. Apple has had AirTags for years, Samsung has its SmartTag lineup with a third-generation model reportedly on the way, while Pixel owners have largely had to rely on third-party trackers. A proper Pixel Tag could finally fill that rather obvious hole in Google’s hardware ecosystem.

The leaked tracker has an oblong design and is expected to work with Google’s Find Hub network, which would allow nearby Android devices to help locate something you’ve lost anonymously. The feature I’m really hoping makes the cut, though, is Ultra-Wideband. That could give the Pixel Tag much more precise directional finding when you’re close to a lost item — the kind of experience that makes hunting for keys buried somewhere around the house considerably less annoying. There is one slightly amusing design choice, however. The Pixel Tag reportedly won’t have a built-in lanyard hole, meaning Google could follow Apple’s approach of making you use a separate accessory if you want to attach one to your keys or bag. Samsung’s rumored Galaxy SmartTag 3 is apparently heading in the same direction, too. So it’s quite clear that Bluetooth trackers have collectively decided that holes are no longer fashionable. Still, if Google gets the fundamentals right — particularly UWB tracking and tight integration with Find Hub — the Pixel Tag could be one of the smallest announcements at the event, but potentially one of the most useful.

Google’s little circle gets a bigger brain

Of course, it wouldn’t really feel like a Made by Google hardware event without a new Pixel Watch showing up, and this year, that should be the Pixel Watch 5. Visually, Google doesn’t appear to be tearing up the rulebook, but the upgrades happening underneath could be much more interesting. Battery life is the first thing I’ll be watching. The Pixel Watch 5 is expected to squeeze slightly larger batteries into both sizes, which is always welcome on something you’re supposed to wear all day, track workouts with, sleep in, and somehow still have enough juice left for the next morning. It’s also rumored to use a faster version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 chip, which should hopefully make everyday interactions feel quicker and smoother.

Storage could get a surprisingly big bump, too. Rumors point to the Pixel Watch 5 offering twice as much storage as its predecessor. That might sound excessive for a watch, but it starts making more sense when you consider how heavily Google is leaning into Gemini Intelligence. With Wear OS 7 pushing smartwatches toward becoming more contextually aware and capable of handling tasks on your behalf, that extra room could eventually become quite useful. As for the hardware itself, the familiar 41mm and 45mm sizes are expected to stick around, along with the same IP68 dust and water resistance and 5ATM rating. So, if you already like the circular Pixel Watch design, Google apparently sees very little reason to mess with it. Pricing could remain familiar as well. According to GSMArena, the 41mm Pixel Watch 5 is expected to start at $399, with LTE adding another $100, while the larger 45mm model could begin at $429.

But wait, Google might not be done

Those are the announcements I’d put firmly at the top of the list, but Google could still have a couple of surprises waiting in the wings. And this is where things get a little more interesting. Earlier this year, Google confirmed that it was working on a new generation of laptops that would bring Android and ChromeOS much closer together. We haven’t heard much about the project since, but Google previously pointed to a fall launch, which puts us awfully close to that window. I’m not necessarily expecting Google to roll out a laptop on stage on August 12, but a teaser, a name, or even a proper look at what it has been building certainly wouldn’t feel out of place. The interesting bit is that these so-called Googlebooks aren’t expected to replace Chromebooks. Instead, they could sit above them as a more premium option, built around a unified operating system and much tighter integration with Android phones.

Then there are smart glasses, because apparently every tech company has looked at Meta’s Ray-Bans and decided our faces are the next great computing platform. Samsung has already given us a glimpse of its own plans, and Google has been steadily building toward Android XR glasses as well. That makes the Made by Google stage a pretty tempting place to show them off again. I wouldn’t necessarily count on being able to buy a pair immediately, but a fresh demo or even a launch window would be enough to get my attention. And that’s what makes this event particularly interesting. We already have a pretty good idea of what’s coming from the Pixel 11 family, but it’s the things Google hasn’t spent the past few months leaking all over the internet that could end up providing the biggest surprises.

How to watch Google’s August 12 showcase?

All of that sounds exciting, but there’s one rather important detail left: how do you actually watch Google announce everything? Google is doing things a little differently this year — Google will share its announcements earlier in the day before holding the Made by Google show later that evening.

The event takes place on August 12 at 3 PM PT, and you’ll be able to watch the entire thing live on YouTube. So, whether you’re here for the Pixel 11 series, desperately waiting for the Pixel Tag like I am, or simply curious to see whether Google has a surprise tucked away for the end, you can tune in and watch everything unfold in real time. And considering how much hardware could be on the table this year, it might be worth sticking around until the very last announcement.
