Meta reached an $18 billion settlement on Wednesday over a lawsuit brought by 29 U.S. states concerning children’s safety. The settlement is historic in scale as Meta agrees with a group of 52 attorneys general to implement sweeping changes to how minors use Instagram and Facebook.
The settlement “gives the AGs what they want, which is the political story that they’ve extracted a huge amount of benefit for the public from this settlement, including the platform changes,” Jessica Nall, a technology litigator at Withers, told TechCrunch. But Nall noted the settlement’s real-dollar impact is softer than the headline number suggests. “The fact that it’s being paid over 10 years really does blunt the financial impact of the large number, especially compared to Meta’s annual revenue… We’re talking about one of these tech companies where their annual revenue is larger than the GDP of most European countries.”
Indeed, Meta reported more than $200 billion in total revenue in 2025, which puts the $18 billion price tag in perspective. But the bigger story here isn’t the dollar amount. It’s what Meta now has to build: the most detailed child-safety rules any major platform has agreed to, resting on age-verification technology that still doesn’t work particularly well.
Meta hasn’t admitted wrongdoing, even as it settles allegations that it intentionally designed its platforms to keep children hooked — a common tactic for companies looking to avoid a jury trial, where the risk of a worse outcome is higher. A ruling against Meta could also have jeopardized the legal protections that allow social platforms to escape liability for what users post.
“I think it’s wise of them to try to get out of it, especially without a legal finding against them on any of the First Amendment issues and the Section 230 issues, which are still alive,” Nall said. “That could be existential, potentially, not just for Meta but for every tech company that has a product that engages with users, which is almost all of them.”
Meta’s settlement also reignites ongoing concern over age verification measures that are intended to protect children online but can, in practice, create new privacy risks for both kids and adults.
“This is a classic debate around prioritizing safety over privacy,” Dr. Alexis Ingber, a professor of communications at Syracuse University, told TechCrunch. “The perspective is, if we want to keep children safe on Meta platforms, here are all the design things we’re gonna have to do, but we’re gonna have to also do this age verification thing that’s gonna take away from people’s data privacy and will introduce these new data privacy concerns.”
Under the settlement’s terms, Meta has proposed a list of design changes, including a default two-hour daily screen-time limit for app use, plus prompts that appear every 15 minutes to “encourage intentional use.” Accounts that Meta identifies as belonging to minors will also default to being blocked from Meta apps overnight (between midnight and 6 a.m.) and will have notifications muted during school hours (8 a.m. to 3 p.m.). By default, teens won’t be able to see ‘like’ counts on their own posts or others’, among other changes.
“The design changes that were proposed in the settlement seem great on paper, but they are all reliant upon successful, effective, and unbiased age verification technology,” Dr. Ingber said. “You need to be able to identify that that’s a child versus an adult, and the way that we do that right now is not really effective… I’m very curious to see how Meta is going to move forward with trying to do that, given that by and large, these technologies have failed.”
Age-verification technology has evolved well beyond clicking “Yes, I am 21” on a liquor website. Companies now typically verify age through biometric scans (like a selfie), government ID checks, or analysis of behavioral patterns, and each comes with its own flaws. Behavioral analysis can misjudge adults as minors or vice versa, while ID and biometric checks require kids, and adults, to hand sensitive documents over to a third party just to use an app.
Some users also don’t trust platforms to roll out age-verification responsibly. Discord learned this firsthand when it tried to implement global age verification earlier this year and had to delay the rollout after significant user backlash.
Not everyone shares that pessimism, though. “I think the technology has evolved quite a bit in the last few years since these concerns started coming up, and I do think there are ways that [companies] can provide or implement age assurance technologies,” Philip Yannella, co-chair of the privacy and data security group at law firm Blank Rome, told TechCrunch. “I’m not going to say they won’t have potential privacy issues, but they could greatly lessen the privacy issues.”
Yannella added that companies don’t need to store users’ personal information to verify their age.
“There are ways you can verify someone’s age, create a token that would signal that this particular IP is associated with someone who’s below the age of 13, below the age of 16, whatever it is, but discard the personal information,” he said.
Still, Ingber and other experts caution that even if companies don’t retain this data, simply transmitting sensitive identity information online carries its own privacy risk. A breach of ID scans or facial biometric data tied to minors creates the risk of identity theft, and unlike a password, a leaked face or fingerprint can’t be changed.
Meanwhile, as Meta and the 52 state attorneys general finalize these guidelines — which Meta must follow for the next 10 years — the company is framing the settlement not as a concession, but as proof that it’s a leader in children’s online safety. Meta is now running full-page newspaper ads calling on TikTok and YouTube to adopt similar design changes, without mentioning that its own adoption came as part of a legal settlement. Under the agreement, roughly 30% of Meta’s settlement payment depends on whether TikTok and YouTube also comply with these guidelines.
While Ingber worries that Meta and other companies won’t be able to meet these commitments without relying on potentially insecure verification mechanisms, she sees the settlement as evidence of a bigger cultural shift.
“Meta has extraordinary power to create norms through its platform design,” she said. “If you change the way that the platform is designed, you can set new norms. You can make things better.”

What is Extreme Charging?

Extreme Charging is a new Pixel 11 family feature that enables the fastest charging that Google’s hardware supports. In addition to charging at the highest supported wattage, Extreme Charging pauses many apps while charging.
This ensures that your Pixel isn’t getting extra hot while charging (since charging and running lots of apps at once can have that effect) and also means your phone can charge much faster.
Extreme Charging needs to be enabled every time you plug the phone in and when it’s below 50%, but once enabled, it’s a 1-tap action. To get the most out of Extreme Charging, ensure you’re using one of the best fast chargers, preferably at least a 45W model with 21V PPS. You can also use Google’s official charger to ensure full compatibility.
How fast is Extreme Charging?

For most Pixel 11 models, Extreme charging makes little to no difference. I have all three Pixel 11 Pro models in my possession and have drained each to 0%. I then plugged them into a supported 45W Anker charger (like this one) and tapped the Extreme Charging button to enable it (more on how to find it below).

I then set a 15-minute timer and recorded the charging percentage at the end of the timer. After a second 15-minute timer, I recorded that charging percentage. This test is identical to our in-house battery-charging test used for all smartphone reviews. Android Central’s Derrek Lee also performed the same test with his Pixel 11 and the 67W Dual Port charger.
The results were fascinating, but it’s clear that the Pixel 11 Pro XL is the only Pro model that genuinely benefits from Extreme Charging. The other models see a small boost after 15 minutes, and a larger difference is noticeable after 30 minutes, so there is some benefit to Extreme Charging for the rest of the Pixel 11 models, but nothing compared to the Pro XL.

How to enable Extreme Charging on a Pixel 11

Extreme Charging is only available on Pixel 11 phones when your phone’s battery is under 50%. Once your battery is low enough, plug it into a compatible 30W, 45W, or even faster charger, then follow these steps:
1. When your phone’s battery is under 50%, plug it into at least a 30W charger.
2. Open system settings by tapping the Settings icon in your app drawer, or swiping down on the status bar twice, then tapping the gear icon at the bottom of the screen.
3. Scroll down to and tap Battery & charging.
4. Scroll down and tap Extreme Charging Mode.
5. Tap the button to turn on Extreme Charging.

You must enable Extreme Charging every time you want to use the feature, but don’t worry. You don’t have to go through all that nonsense again. Once you enable the option in system settings, a handy shortcut appears on your lock screen whenever your phone is plugged into a charger and the battery is under 50%.
1. When your phone’s battery is under 50%, plug it into at least a 30W charger.
2. On the lock screen, tap the Use Extreme Charging button at the bottom of the screen.
Additionally, you could enable the Extreme Charging tile in Quick Settings by following these steps:
1. Swipe down on the status bar twice. That’s the area at the top of the screen with the clock and battery/connection icons.
2. Tap the pencil icon below the grid of quick toggle buttons to open the edit menu.
3. Scroll down to Extreme Charging and tap the plus button next to it to add it to the Quick Toggles collection.
4. Scroll back up and resize the Extreme Charging button to your liking.

Zillow and Redfin have reached a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and five states, ending a legal fight over a 2025 partnership that the FTC claimed hurt competition in the rental-listing market. The settlement was announced on Monday, just as the case was scheduled to head toward trial this morning.
The case stems from a deal announced last year in which Redfin agreed to display Zillow’s rental listings on its websites rather than compete directly with Zillow for rental advertisers. The arrangement could have kept Redfin out of the rental advertising business for as long as nine years. Redfin owns Rent.com and ApartmentGuide.com, two major rental-listing platforms.
According to the FTC and attorneys general from Arizona, Connecticut, New York, Virginia, and Washington, Zillow agreed to pay Redfin $100 million to keep Redfin from competing with Zillow.
The companies defended the partnership as a way to give renters access to a larger pool of listings. The FTC, however, argued that Zillow was paying one of its largest competitors to stop competing, potentially allowing the company to charge higher prices and provide less favorable terms to property managers. It could have also reduced the quality of rental listings available to consumers.
Under the proposed settlement, Redfin will be required to reenter the rental advertising business. The order also removes restrictions that previously limited Redfin’s ability to compete independently for property-management customers.
The settlement doesn’t completely end the relationship between the two companies. Redfin can continue displaying Zillow’s rental listings, but it will once again be able to compete for its own customers. Redfin will be able to sell advertising, display listings from its own clients, and pursue new rental customers without being required to share sensitive business information with Zillow.
The Zillow-Redfin case comes just months after the DOJ’s settlement with Ticketmaster, another antitrust case involving allegations that a dominant company used its power to suppress competition. However, 26 of the 30 state attorneys general who initially sued Live Nation alongside the DOJ chose to continue pursuing the case and won their lawsuit in April.

The Pixel 11 Pro XL lasts longer, is faster, and has better cameras. That said, it is noticeably costlier, and a majority of its new features are around the software, most of which Google will inevitably bring to the Pixel 9 Pro XL.
Just as good
The Pixel 9 Pro XL is still a great phone in 2026. The design is similar to the 11 Pro XL, the cameras take reliable photos and videos, and it has the same software. You don’t get some of the new camera-focused software tricks, but that alone doesn’t justify an upgrade.
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL vs Pixel 9 Pro XL: Design and display
Honestly, there isn’t much of a difference between both phones. Google retained similar dimensions over the last two years, and the result is that the Pixel 9 Pro XL is nearly the same size and weight as the Pixel 11 Pro XL.
This is easily noticeable while holding the phones next to each other. If anything, I like the in-hand feel of the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Google sent me the all-matte Obsidian model of the 11 Pro XL, and it is dull. I like the matte texture, but the phone itself doesn’t look exciting, and I would’ve preferred the vibrant Canyon model instead.
The one key difference is that the camera bar on the Pixel 11 Pro XL doesn’t jut out as much, so it looks a little more elegant. Both phones have the same IP68 dust and water resistance, so they’re equally good at weathering anything to do with daily use.

Interestingly, the Pixel 9 Pro XL is when we saw the Actua display tech, and Google is using a continuation of the same this year as well. The 11 Pro XL gets brighter, but the 9 Pro XL does a terrific job as well, and the panel has vibrant colors and has zero issues in outdoor use.
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL vs Pixel 9 Pro XL: Hardware and software
The Pixel 11 Pro XL runs Google’s latest 3nm Tensor G6, and it is using new cores and is noticeably better in everyday use than the Tensor G4-powered 9 Pro XL. It has better efficiency as well, and even though both phones have similarly-sized batteries, my Pixel 11 Pro XL is lasting a few hours longer on average.
Where I see the biggest advantage is Qi 2.2 integration in the Pixel 11 Pro XL; having these magnets built into the phone means I can use any Qi 2.2 charger or power bank and get 25W charging, and it genuinely makes a big difference. Look, I didn’t care about this at all in the past as wireless charging was limited to 12W — as is the case on the Pixel 9 Pro XL — but with 25W, it’s close enough to the standard 45W USB PD charging standard that I use it all the time now.

Other than that, there honestly isn’t much to differentiate both phones. While the Pixel 11 Pro XL has a little more power, it still isn’t a gaming phone by any measure, so if that’s what you’re after, you should look at Pixel 11 Pro XL alternatives. It’s a similar story with the software; both phones get seven years of software updates, and outside of a few extras that are exclusive on the Pixel 11 Pro XL, the software is identical.

Both phones have a similar set of cameras: a 50MP main camera, 48MP telephoto lens with OIS and 5x optical zoom, and 48MP wide-angle lens. While the auxiliary lenses are unchanged between both, the Pixel 11 Pro XL has a new 50MP camera with better light intake, and it does a better job in taking photos and videos in challenging scenarios.
However, the best part about using Pixels is the camera software; Google introduced Camera Looks this year, and it gives you much greater control in tailoring the look of the photos.
There’s also Magic Capture, which automagically gives you the best shot each and every time. If you have little children that constantly move about, this mode is definitely handy.
Google Pixel 11 Pro XL vs Pixel 9 Pro XL: Which should you buy?
The Pixel 11 Pro XL is $100 costlier this year, and while it has some new features, the fundamentals are pretty much unchanged from the Pixel 9 Pro XL. Honestly, with the 256GB model coming with 12GB of RAM instead of the 16GB that was standard for the last two years, I’d argue that you’re getting less for your money. If you’re using the 9 Pro XL and are mulling an upgrade, I’d wait — I don’t see enough of a change to make the move.
If you’re on an older phone and are considering an upgrade, however, the Pixel 11 Pro XL could be a good choice — unless you can get a good deal on the 9 Pro XL. While Google launched the 9 Pro XL two years ago, the phone is built to last, and it will get regular updates and new features for at least another five years.

The Pixel 11 Pro XL continues to be a solid phone two years after its launch, and I wouldn’t considering upgrading just yet. If you can get a good deal, just buy the 9 Pro XL.
While Slack already integrates with several coding agents, developers have to interact with them independently to get work done. The aim of Slack Code is to make agents available to multiple coworkers in shared, project-based “code channels.”
“We built code channels to be this multi-player AI experience and bring more development into Slack,” said Sateja Parulekar, vice president of product marketing at Slack. “It’s not just engineers and product managers who are working with the coding agents; it’s the marketers, the product designers who are now able to interact with a coding agent in a safe, governed environment.”
Slack code channels are intended for one-off coding sessions and projects — building a new application feature, updating a web page, or fixing a bug, for example.
When the coding agent is tagged in a Slack channel or DM with a request, it automatically creates a new code channel, adds links to required documents, and invites relevant participants.
The code channel functions just like a normal Slack channel, with participants able to send messages and files as usual, while also letting them interact with a coding agent and track outputs via the channel’s “session artifacts.” These artifacts include “code diffs” that highlight changes to code made by the agent, as well as Slack “canvas” documents and live HTML that displays prototypes and previews created by the agent.
All participants can use natural language to direct the agent, making suggestions and signing-off on outputs, for instance. Any updates are then highlighted in the original Slack channel. And when a task or project is complete, the code channel is automatically archived.
Slack Code channels can also be customized — Slack admins can create guardrails to prevent non-technical workers from shipping code without engineering review, for example.
Code channels adhere to Slack’s existing security and permissions model, the company said, with agents able to access conversations and data based on controls set for a Slack workspace.
At launch, four agents integrate with Slack Code — Claude Code, Devin, GitHub Copilot, and Vercel — though Slack intends to expand the list of options over time. Slack Code is available at no extra cost on all Slack subscriptions.
“Slack Code closes the gap between where work gets done and where code gets written with dedicated spaces built for output along project-based channels right in Slack,” said Wayne Kurtzman, research vice president at IDC. “This furthers the Salesforce goal of making work more seamless and multi-player within the Slack environment, regardless of the other applications the business is using.
“While Slack Code may seem early to market for some companies, others are leveraging the first-mover advantage.”
While software development and coordination work “has happened in Slack forever,” according to Will McKeon-White, senior analyst at Forrester, the new features make it “easier to just stay in Slack only and [open] up who is involved with the actual code creation.”
For IT staffers who enable Slack Code, the immediate consideration involves permissions, he said — “a persistent challenge for anything multiplayer.” McKeon-White cites various approaches: “…Some inherit user permissions based on task, some have persistent permissions with different ‘invoking’ permissions for users, some inherit the permissions of the room. Each has flaws.”
The longer-term challenge, he said, is around multi-agent collaboration.
“Multi-agent collab today in successful environments isn’t very dynamic,” said McKeon-White. “Having true dynamic agents cooperating can create extremely interesting emergent behavior,” he said, pointing to recent Anthropic research on the topic.
While Slack Code is aimed at software development-related tasks, Slack also envisages a similar cross-functional, collaborative approach to AI agent interactions applied to a wider variety of purposes: marketing campaigns, for instance, or legal document reviews.
“That might not involve code per se, but it does involve a very detailed review of a document and tracking changes and a preview of what’s going to be sent out to the customer,” said Parulekar. “In the future, we see this extending to a lot of different teams and use cases for technical and non-technical users.”
Other features announced Thursday include “agent DMs” that allow for individual interactions with an agent and a new “agents tab” where users can view existing agent conversations.
Parulekar said Slack Code feeds into a wider Slack strategy centered on a “multi-player experience” for human workers and AI agents. This includes the recent announcement of Claude Tag, which makes Anthropic’s agent available to teams.
“Whether it’s the user experience that we’re evolving — like the agent tab, or coding channels where you can plan, code, test, and ship inside of Slack — it’s all part of that bigger vision of making Slack a great home for agents and furthering that vision of multiplayer AI,” she said.

Inherent, a London AI lab founded by Google DeepMind alumni, says its AI agent just outperformed much larger models from Anthropic and OpenAI using a fraction of the size.
Of all the startups launched by Google DeepMind alumni, Inherent has gotten relatively little attention. But while better-funded rivals have yet to show the world anything concrete, the London-based team is starting to share what it’s been building.
Just weeks after emerging from stealth with a $50 million seed round, the British startup says its newly released AI agent, Faraday, has outperformed larger, better-known models at a specific task: independently reproducing the findings of published scientific papers without being told the answer in advance.
That may sound like a mere party trick given Inherent’s much loftier goal — building AI that can discover new scientific knowledge and not just verify old results. But paper replication is a standard training exercise for human scientists, too, cofounder and chief scientist Edward Hughes said. “Many PhD students actually start by doing this.”
Beating other AI systems at the task wasn’t the point, Hughes told TechCrunch; how they got there was. “What was most interesting to us about this was not so much the result of beating those frontier agents — which of course we liked — but was actually the way we went about building this.”
Here’s the part that should catch an investor’s eye: measured against Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8 and OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 — both much larger, frontier-scale systems — Faraday runs on a comparatively tiny model called Qwen 3.6 that has just 27 billion parameters. (Roughly speaking, “parameters” is a proxy for a model’s size and, typically, its training costs, as well.) Inherent’s bar for success was also higher than simply accuracy. Beyond replicating results, it wanted Faraday to demonstrate “research taste” — an instinct for what experiments are worth running and how to design them well.
Teaching something as intangible as taste is hard, which is where reinforcement learning comes in. It’s a training method that rewards an AI system for good outcomes rather than spelling out rules for it to follow. Rather than training its agents primarily on the study of how science itself is conducted, Inherent leans on this reward-based approach, betting it will generalize better to its longer-term goal of agents capable of contributing across many scientific fields.
“We’re always guided by that north star of building an AI scientist agent and imbuing our agents with taste,” Hughes said. That focus has also shaped what Inherent chooses not to build. Rather than developing its own coding tool, it had Faraday use OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 Codex instead, much the way human scientists lean on existing software rather than building everything themselves, according to the company.
Inherent is also trying to avoid building agents that simply tell users what they want to hear. Instead, Hughes said, the goal is modeled on his favorite kind of teammate — the kind who comes back and says: “I got curious about this, and I went off and I did these experiments. What do you think of these results?”
That collaborative instinct extends to how Inherent operates as a company. Its dozen employees all work in person out of an office in King’s Cross — the once-rundown London neighborhood that Google DeepMind’s presence helped turn into one of the world’s top AI hubs. “We believe that London is the place to be,” Hughes said.
Hughes is bullish on London’s density of AI talent, but he has also added his voice to calls to end “garden leave” — the practice, common in the U.K., of barring departing employees from joining or starting a rival company for months after they resign. It’s a restriction American researchers generally don’t face, giving U.S. startups a head start on hiring talent who’ve left a prior role. “This is a personal view rather than a company view, but I was affected by the garden leave problem,” he told TechCrunch.
Hughes eventually got around that constraint and started Inherent alongside two other DeepMind alumni and a fourth cofounder. The startup isn’t slowing down either. It plans to grow its headcount to “about 20 to 25” by the end of the year. Given its ambitions in world models as well, and with Demis Hassabis’s new role leaving some DeepMind staff unsettled, Inherent’s hiring push could make it an appealing landing spot for DeepMind employees weighing a move.

I knew Samsung hadn’t changed the design with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, but it was still surprising to see just how similar it is to last year’s model — I had to double-check the box to confirm I wasn’t sent the Z Fold 7 again.
That sums up the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra in a nutshell; at the surface-level, it is indistinguishable from the Z Fold 7. It is just as thin and light, weighs the same, and has the same in-hand feel. I was holding out on Samsung moving to a design with rounded edges — similar to what Google does with the Pixel 11 Pro Fold — but that isn’t the case.
Thankfully, there are a few upgrades. Samsung finally moved to silicon-carbon battery tech, and was able to slot in a bigger 5,000mAh battery in a chassis that’s the same size as last year. There’s also 45W charging, a crease that isn’t quite as noticeable as last year, a new rear camera, and Android 17 with One UI 9 out of the box. But is that enough to warrant a price hike to an eye-watering $2,099? Let’s take a look.
Samsung didn’t make any outward changes to the design, but the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra has a new hinge that feels better to use, and it allows the foldable to be fully flat. It’s another thing that it took Samsung eight years to get to this point while Chinese brands have managed it in less than half that time, but at least there’s some progress in this area.
The other side effect of the new hinge is the crease, which is barely noticeable now. It’s still evident in daily use, and it isn’t quite as creaseless as the Find N6, but there is a difference from the Z Fold 7. Samsung didn’t change the panel sizes this year, so you get a 6.5-inch outer and 8.0-inch inner screen, and they’re a little brighter this year.
What I like is that the inner panel has an anti-reflective coating, and it makes a difference when using it outdoors. It also gets a higher resolution (2504 x 2256), and as I prefer reading to watching media on my phone, I like these changes — that’s one of the reasons I’m using the Z Fold 8 Ultra instead of the Z Fold 8.
There isn’t anything missing when it comes to the internals as well. You get the latest Qualcomm silicon, 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. I think a foldable that costs over $2,000 needs to have at least 512GB of storage, but with the RAM shortages, I’m glad Samsung didn’t move the base model to 128GB and call the 256GB edition an upgrade.

While it has the same silicon as the S26 Ultra, the inherent foldable nature means the Z Fold 8 Ultra is thermally constrained, so it throttles sooner, and tends to get hot in extended gaming sessions. This is the case with all foldables and isn’t something unique to Samsung. I didn’t see any issues with connectivity (thankfully), but the only change in this area is that the foldable has a single SIM slot, with the secondary slot requiring an eSIM.
The one thing Samsung should have changed with the design is the placement of the rear camera module. The Z Fold 8 Ultra has an oblong camera housing that sits to the left, and because the modules protrude quite a bit from the body, you get a constant wobble when using the foldable on a table.
It doesn’t matter if you’re using the phone folded or unfolded, the wobble is ever-present and a routine source of frustration. This is why all other brands have switched to center-mounted cameras; I didn’t see this problem with my Find N6, Vivo X Fold 5, Moto Razr Fold, or the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
I just don’t understand why Samsung continues to be obstinate about this; clearly, this is a major design flaw, yet the brand chooses to ignore it. On that note, the foldable once again misses out on IP68 dust and water resistance. You get IP48 instead, and while it’s decent, it doesn’t prevent dust ingress.
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra uses the same 200MP main camera as last year, and it has a 10MP telephoto and a new 50MP wide-angle lens. Okay, great, but just one question: who uses the wide-angle camera? I take plenty of photos, and I predominantly use the 2x or 3x lenses while framing, and I think Samsung should’ve upgraded the ageing 10MP lens instead — this is the same module that’s being used from the Galaxy S21 days.
Also, the tele lens is particularly useful as a portrait shooter, and I use it all the time because of this. To have a distinctly average tele lens on a foldable dubbed an Ultra is egregious to say the least, and the Z Fold 8 Ultra doesn’t measure up to the Find N6 or the Vivo X Fold 5 in this regard. Shots at 3x don’t have much in the way of definition, and anything shot at 10x and beyond is just a blotchy mess without any detail.
Thankfully, the other cameras are quite good, and you get decent shots with Samsung’s traditional oversaturated look. It does a good enough job in low-light situations as well, and while the cameras aren’t on the same level as regular phones — or current-gen Chinese foldables — they are pretty good for the most part.
Samsung finally started using silicon-carbon batteries, and the Z Fold 8 Ultra gets a 5,000mAh unit. The foldable manages to last a day as a result, and while I still had to plug in before the end of the day at times, it wasn’t anywhere as frequently as previous years.
What I like even more is the 45W charging. It may not seem like a big deal, but the move means the battery gets to a full charge in just an hour, which is 30 minutes less than its predecessor. A 30-minute charge gives you a 40% charge, and it’s just refreshing to be able to get decent charging speeds on a Samsung foldable. However, Samsung once again missed out on adding Qi 2 magnets, so if you want to use a Qi 2 or Qi 2.2 power bank or charger, you’ll need to buy a case.
Just like the physical design, Samsung isn’t changing things too much with One UI 9, its Android 17-based interface. The UI should be immediately familiar if you’ve used a Samsung phone, and while there are a few tweaks, the design as a whole is unchanged.
Galaxy AI (once again) is the key focus, with Samsung shoehorning on-device AI into just about every corner — and there’s Gemini Intelligence as well if you wanted even more AI. The agentic model is designed to take actions on your behalf, but it isn’t quite useful just yet.
You get good fluidity and an exhaustive feature-set, including intuitive multi-tasking modes to maximize the real estate. Just like previous years, the foldable will get seven years of software updates, similar to what Google offers on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold.
It irks me that Samsung calls this foldable an Ultra — the only thing fitting of that moniker on the Z Fold 8 Ultra is the pricing. At $2,099, this is the costliest phone around (at least until the iPhone Fold shows up), and I’m not sure you’re getting anywhere close to a good value.
Of course, this is a moot point in the U.S.; generous trade-in deals and carrier subsidies make getting the foldable a lot easier. That isn’t the case in other regions, and I think the Find N6, X Fold 5, and the Moto Razr Fold are a better all-round deal if you’re ready to move to a foldable. There’s no denying that Samsung has a strong foldable in the Z Fold 8 Ultra, but the pricing makes it hard to recommend, and I’d suggest looking at other choices before making a decision — you’ll be surprised to see just how good the competition is these days.
