Here’s What You Need for iPhone 16 Fast Charging via MagSafe or USB-C

Now that Apple doesn’t include power adapters with new iPhones, you have to supply your own, and it can be a little confusing figuring out what you need specifically to get the fastest charging speeds. Apple added another layer of complexity this year with upgraded MagSafe charging for the iPhone 16 models, a feature that also requires specific hardware.

USB-C

All of the ‌iPhone 16‌ models can charge from 0 to 50 percent in approximately 30 minutes. You need Apple’s $19 20W adapter or better for fast charging, and if you already had an iPhone that could fast charge, you probably have the hardware you need.

iPhones charge fastest when the battery is low, and then charging slows down, so you’ll see the most rapid charging at lower battery levels.

There was speculation that the ‌iPhone 16‌ models support up to 45W charging, but testing from ChargerLAB has proven that to be inaccurate. Charging maxes out at 30W, which is similar to last year’s iPhone 15 Pro charging speeds.

Some people have seen sporadic higher maximum charge levels over 30W, but that seems to happen only when you’re playing a game or doing something else that drains battery quickly. The extra power boost seems to be aimed at making sure the ‌iPhone 16‌ is able to maintain its fast charging speed even when it’s using extra power. With prior ‌iPhone‌ models, charging would slow down if you were doing something that used up a lot of battery.

PhoneArena did a charging test and when playing a game, the ‌iPhone 16‌ was able to charge at up to 39W for a short period of time while it had under 50 percent battery. In other tests where the ‌iPhone‌ wasn’t in use, PhoneArena did not see charging speeds over 20W for the ‌iPhone 16‌ or 27W for the iPhone 16 Pro.

PhoneArena and ChargerLAB didn’t test charging speeds, so we did a quick test. An ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max charged from 0 to 55 percent in 30 minutes with a 30W charger, and from 0 to 45 percent in 30 minutes with a 20W charger. A third test with a 140W charger saw the 16 Pro Max charge from 0 to 56 percent in 30 minutes. Tests all used the USB-C to USB-C cable that comes with the ‌iPhone‌ and Apple’s power adapters.

For the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models, it looks like you can get slightly faster charging speeds with a 30W or better charger, even though Apple only recommends a 20W or better charger for fast charging. Going over 30W doesn’t seem to make much of a difference. The standard ‌iPhone 16‌ models seem to max out at around 20W, so they don’t need a 30W+ charger.

If you’ve already got a 20W charger and have an ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ or Pro Max, there’s no real reason to upgrade. You’ll still hit close to 50 percent in 30 minutes with a 20W charger. If you’re often charging while also playing games, or want to optimize you might want to consider investing in a 30W+ charger for faster sustained charging speeds.

Note that you can also use higher-watt chargers — 20W is just the minimum for “fast” charging.

MagSafe

The ‌iPhone 16‌ models can charge at up to 25W over ‌MagSafe‌, up from 15W. 25W charging via ‌MagSafe‌ is also fast charging, so for the first time, the new iPhones can fast charge wirelessly.

To take advantage of the faster ‌MagSafe‌ charging, you need a 30W or higher power adapter, which Apple sells for $39. Of course, you can use a higher powered power source or a third-party power adapter as long as it delivers at least 30W.

You also need one of Apple’s new ‌MagSafe‌ chargers, which were released alongside the new ‌iPhone‌ models.

Older ‌MagSafe‌ Chargers from Apple will not charge your ‌iPhone 16‌ model at above 15W, nor will older third-party ‌MagSafe‌ chargers. If you have a ‌MagSafe‌ stand or multi-device charger from a company like Mophie or Belkin, it’s now outdated and can’t charge your new ‌iPhone‌ at its maximum wireless charging speed.

The new ‌MagSafe‌ Chargers from Apple will only charge the ‌iPhone 16‌ models at 25W, and while you can use them with your older iPhones, charging will be limited to 15W.

Qi2 chargers are equivalent to the prior 15W ‌MagSafe‌ Charger and can only charge ‌iPhone 16‌ models at 15W.

If you don’t want to read the accessory explanation, here’s what to buy for ‌iPhone 16‌ fast charging:

  • USB-C for iPhone 16: 20W or better power adapter paired with the charging cable the ‌iPhone‌ came with. 30W is better for the fastest speeds, especially if you charge while using your ‌iPhone‌.
  • USB-C for iPhone 16 Pro: A 30W or better power adapter will get you the best fast charging speed.
  • MagSafe: 30W or better power adapter paired with Apple’s new $39 MagSafe Charger.

Bonus: Faster Data Transfers

If you want to transfer files from your ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ to another device quickly, you’re going to want to pick up a USB 3 cable for 10Gb/s transfer speeds.

The cable that comes with your ‌iPhone 16‌ is limited to USB 2 speeds of 480Mb/s.

I have a love-hate relationship with the iPhone 16 Pro Max

Apple just launched the iPhone 16 line, and it’s been quite an upgrade this year. Though the base models got some nice updates, like the A18 chip and some of the best colors I’ve seen from Apple in years, I’m still all about the Pro models. Once you go with 1TB storage and 120Hz ProMotion displays, it’s hard to go back.

This year, things are a little different. Ever since Apple introduced a Pro model, I’ve always gone for the smaller variant. After one year with a Plus model phone, I learned that I simply don’t care for large phones, so I never tried out a Pro Max. I’ve always just gawked at how humongous the size is, and this year, Apple went ahead and made it even bigger with a 6.9-inch display instead of 6.7 inches.

I have been spending some time with an iPhone 16 Pro Max, and while there’s one thing about it I love, another part of me can’t stand it.

Big phones are not meant for small hands

I’ve had every generation of iPhone so far, and one of my favorite models was the iPhone 5. For me, that 4-inch display was the perfect size for single-handed use, as I have petite hands. That’s why the first iPhone SE was a great compact phone, but the sequels that followed weren’t quite as perfect with the larger 4.7-inch display size.

Then, Apple moved to the 5.8-inch size with the iPhone X for a couple of years. I learned to manage one-handed use with that size, though it still required some finger gymnastics, but I put up with it. I was happy that Apple seemed to recognize the need for small phones when it introduced the mini size with the iPhone 12 and 13, but it sold so poorly that Apple replaced it with a large “Plus” model.

Apple eventually moved on to 6.1 inches as the standard “small” size while having a 6.7-inch display for the Plus and Pro Max. This year, the Pro Max got bumped up to 6.9 inches, which isn’t that big of a difference from the previous size.

But still, for someone like me with tiny hands, this is a behemoth of a phone, and I absolutely cannot use this one-handed at all unless I’m only scrolling through an app. When I hold the phone with one hand (typically from the bottom), the tip of my thumb barely reaches the middle of the bottom half of the screen. Reaching the top corners is impossible without two hands. And the phone’s weight causes fatigue in my hands (especially if my pinkie supports it from the bottom).

I can see why large phones like the iPhone 16 Pro Max appeal to those who are the opposite of me and have large hands, whereas the regular iPhone 16 Pro could be “too small.” But after spending time with an iPhone 16 Pro Max, my very first Pro Max model after all these years, I learned that I was right — it’s simply too big for me.

The battery life is great, though

I have to give credit where credit is due. The battery life on the iPhone 16 Pro Max has been fantastic. Out of the entire iPhone 16 line, the iPhone 16 Pro Max has the most battery, followed by the iPhone 16 Plus.

As someone who has been using the smaller Pro models for the past several years, I can definitely appreciate having a battery that can make it through the day and then some. It’s the same feeling I had when I went from an Apple Watch Series 5 to an Apple Watch Ultra.

My old iPhone 15 Pro, which I have had since launch day, already has a degraded battery that fell below the 90% threshold. That means I’ve been having to charge it up at some point in the middle of the day. I also have the regular iPhone 16 Pro, which appears to have better stamina with the battery, but the iPhone 16 Pro Max takes it to a whole different level. It’s like some of the larger Android phones I’ve tried, like the OnePlus 12 or Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Perhaps if I didn’t have trouble with such a large phone, the iPhone 16 Pro Max would be my personal device. The battery really is that good.

The Camera Control placement is wrong

One of the big selling points for the entire iPhone 16 lineup is the new Camera Control button, which is located at the bottom right of the frame on all models. A single press opens the Camera app (but you can change it if you want), another click captures your photo or starts recording, and you can do light presses and slide gestures to adjust various settings. The Camera Control button makes your iPhone 16 feel more like a standalone camera.

While I’ve tried using it on both the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the placement of the button itself is not practical. It’s even more of an issue with the Pro Max because of its larger size.

If Apple had just put the Camera Control a smidge lower on the frame, closer to the rounded corner, it would have felt more comfortable for landscape photos. When I use the camera in landscape orientation, my index finger is wrapped around the side. But with the current position of the Camera Control, I can’t reach it that way and need to obstruct part of the screen/viewfinder to press it.

Again, this issue isn’t just for the Pro Max model; it’s not great on the smaller Pro either. But the larger size of the iPhone 16 Pro Max just exacerbates the issue.

A powerful iPhone, but not for everyone

This is the first time I’ve used Apple’s large-size phone since the Plus versions, and while I love that extra battery life and seeing more on the display at once, the size just isn’t for me. Props to those who like the big size of the Pro Max, though! It’s just impossible for me to use it comfortably.

I am glad that Apple at least gives us a choice with the iPhone lineup. This year, there’s feature parity with both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. That means those who prefer the smaller size aren’t missing out on major features, unlike last year. Now, the choice just comes down to whether or not you want a big phone or a small phone — and that’s how it should be.






iFixit Teardown Provides Look Inside iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max

Earlier this week, repair site iFixit took apart the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus to demonstrate the new battery removal process that uses electricity for adhesive removal, and today, iFixit is back with a teardown of the iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max.

Apple’s ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models do not have the same simplified battery removal process as the ‌iPhone 16‌, with Apple instead using traditional stretch release adhesive for its pricier iPhones. It’s still easier to get inside, though, because you can do so through the back of the iPhone rather than the display, which can be easily damaged.

Apple encased the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ battery in metal like the ‌iPhone 16‌ models, but the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max does not have the metal casing around its battery, and it’s not clear why. iFixit called the decision to use the metal-encased battery in just the 16 Pro and not the 16 Pro Max “perplexing.”

The LiDAR Scanner is more accessible, which makes it easier to access for repairs. In prior Pro ‌iPhone‌ models, it was under the main camera assembly. The camera modules are almost identical, but not quite interchangeable due to a different cable length and a screw positioned in two separate locations inside each model.

Apple moved the mmWave antenna to make room for the Camera Control button, and in the 16 Pro models, it’s in a hollowed out space near the top of the device. iFixit says that mmWave signal could still suffer due to the titanium frame of the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models.

USB-C port removal is “massively” simplified, but iFixit points out that Apple does not sell replacement USB-C ports. The logic board can also be pulled out with only the removal of the upper speaker assembly, which is a major improvement to the design.

Notably, the teardown revealed that the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models are using a Qualcomm SDX71M modem, which is a custom version of the SDX70M modem used in the iPhone 15 Pro models. Rumors had suggested the Pro models would include the Qualcomm X75 modem, which doesn’t appear to be the case.

iFixit gave the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models a repairability score of 7 out of 10 due to the design changes and the availability of repair manuals.

iPhone 16 Pro Demand Has Been Lower Than Expected, Analyst Says

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo today said demand for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max has been “lower than expected” since the devices became available to pre-order in the U.S. and dozens of other countries on Friday. Kuo said his data is based on a “supply chain survey” and shipping estimates listed on Apple’s online store.

Kuo estimated that sales of all four iPhone 16 models reached about 37 million units in the first weekend after Apple began accepting pre-orders, which is down nearly 13% compared to first-weekend sales of the iPhone 15 series last year. The analyst said a key factor for the decline is the lower demand for the Pro models, with first-weekend sales of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max estimated to be down 27% and 16%, respectively, compared to iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max sales during the equivalent period last year.

The standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have seen higher demand than the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus during the first weekend of sales, but this has not been enough to offset the lower demand for the Pro models, according to Kuo.

Kuo said a major reason for the iPhone 16 Pro models having lower-than-expected demand is that Apple Intelligence will not be available on the devices when they launch on Friday. Instead, the first Apple Intelligence features are rolling out with iOS 18.1 in October. In addition, the analyst said the iPhone is facing “intense competition” in China.

iPhone Upgrade Program members are able to choose their preferred ‌iPhone 16‌ model and complete pre-approval steps that include checking upgrade eligibility, securing credit lines, and confirming shipping details.

Apple has offered a “Get Ready” feature for several years now, providing customers with a streamlined way to pre-order their iPhones with the tap of a button.

Pricing on the ‌iPhone 16‌ starts at $799, while the ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus is priced at $899. The ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ is available starting at $999, and the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max is available starting at $1,199.

New iPhone 16 Pro Color Could Have Bronze Appearance

Several iPhone 16 Pro rumors have suggested that Apple will eliminate the Blue Titanium option that it used for the iPhone 15 Pro devices and replace it with a rose or gold color. Now, the latest claim is that the new color is actually bronze or has a bronze-like appearance.

According to the Weibo-based leaker “Fixed focus digital,” a new iPhone 16 Pro Max color resembles a “bronze hue,” while the surrounding frame has a titanium-like appearance. Earlier this month, another Chinese leaker suggested that the color code for the new iPhone 16 Pro color is simply “Rose,” not the previous “Rose Gold” color that Apple first offered back in 2015 for the iPhone 6S.

It could well be that the two claims are not contradictory and are in fact referring to the same color, but as seen under different lighting conditions. It’s worth mentioning that today’s leaker only mentions the iPhone 16 Pro Max in relation to the new color, but it is reasonable to assume that it will come to both Pro models. Other colors that the iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max are expected to be available in include black, white or silver, and gray or “Natural Titanium.”

Another rumor suggests that Apple plans to use an improved process for finishing and coloring titanium, which will result in a glossier look than the brushed aluminum finish of the iPhone 15 Pro models. The glossy finish could look much more like the stainless steel that Apple used in prior years, but it will be more resistant to scratches.

Apple typically releases its new iPhone series around mid-September, which means we are about six weeks out from the launch of the iPhone 16 series. Like the iPhone 15 series, this year’s lineup is expected to stick with four models, but with the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max handsets getting slightly bigger display sizes. iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

In the last few years, ‌iPhone‌ lineups have launched with five color options. This year, however, Apple could buck that trend for the 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 16‌ and 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus. At least one of the standard models will come in more color options than ever before, claims one rumor.

According to the Weibo-based leaker “Fixed focus digital,” Apple’s upcoming larger 6.7-inch ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus model will come in as many as seven colors that either build upon the existing five colors in the standard iPhone 15 lineup, or recast them in a new finish.

The leaker in question did not provide any more context for the rumor beyond the model name, therefore it is not clear if they are claiming that the seven color options are exclusive to the ‌iPhone 16‌ Plus.

On the other hand, the leaker may have only seen materials for the larger device in the supply chain, in which case the same colors could also be coming to the smaller 6.1-inch ‌iPhone 16‌. Given that the two models are expected to be identical apart from their size difference, this possibility seems the most likely.

Apple typically chooses four, cooler-toned colors for its ‌iPhone‌ Pro models. For last year’s iPhone 15 Pro and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, for example, Apple introduced a titanium chassis that came in four muted finishes: Natural Titanium, Blue Titanium, White Titanium, and Black Titanium.

According to one rumor out of China, the existing Blue Titanium color will be dropped from the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ lineup in favor of a new “rose” titanium color, while Black Titanium will allegedly be replaced with a “space black” color, which is said to be similar to the iPhone 14 Pro color of the same name.

Additionally, the same source claims that the Natural and White Titanium colors will be slightly different on the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models. Natural Titanium is said to be returning, but with more of a gray tint to it. Meanwhile, White Titanium will appear more like a “silver white” color, which is also said to be similar to the silver version of the ‌iPhone 14‌ Pro.

Last year, Apple surprised some ‌iPhone‌ fans by not offering a gold option. Gold was available through the ‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌ 5S to the ‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌ 8, and then on the ‌‌‌iPhone‌‌‌ XS to the ‌‌‌iPhone 14‌‌‌ Pro. Given the popularity of gold, the rumored new “rose” color could well be the titanium version of a gold-like shade.

According to a rumor from another source, the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models will be available in “Desert Titanium” and “Titanium Gray” color options. These names suggest there could be some overlap with the separately rumored rose color and the tweaked Natural Titanium.

In another twist, a recent rumor out of Korea claimed that Apple’s upcoming ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models will use an improved process for finishing and coloring titanium. According to the source, the new process will make the ‌‌iPhone 16 Pro‌‌ and ‌‌iPhone 16 Pro‌‌ Max look more polished than the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models, which have a brushed finish.

The improved manufacturing process will allegedly result in a glossy appearance that is more akin to the heavily polished stainless steel material used in earlier Pro devices before the ‌iPhone 15‌ series. However, the new titanium finish will be less prone to scratches compared to stainless steel.
