A Guide to AutoCAD Ribbon Customization | AutoCAD Blog

Contributed by Autodesk Community member Arshdeep Singh

One of AutoCAD’s greatest features is its ability to be customized to your specific needs. With a little bit of customization, you can set up your own tabs and commands in the ribbon. Adding your most frequently used tools under a single tab not only saves time but also streamlines your design workflow. In addition, you can organize the commands in a logical grouping to help reduce time spent navigating through different menus.

You don’t need any programming experience. The Custom User Interface (CUI) makes it very easy to build menus and preview the changes. This blog post explains how to get started with AutoCAD ribbon customization, helping you tailor the platform to your specific needs. At the end, you will successfully be able to modify the AutoCAD ribbon.

AutoCAD Ribbon Customization: Understanding the Basics

Before we move any further, it’s important to understand the terms ribbon, tabs, and panels.

Ribbon: The ribbon is the horizontal interface at the top of AutoCAD which contains all the tools. It organizes and displays commands in logical grouping using tabs and panels for easy access.

Tabs: Tabs are part of the ribbon and categorize related groups of commands. For example, Home, Insert, Annotate, etc.

Panels: Panels are subdivisions within tabs that group related commands further. For example, the Block Panel under Home Tab contains tools related to blocks like Insert, Detect, Create, Edit, etc.

Working with the Customize User Interface Editor

To get started, you will need to open the Customize User Interface (CUI) Editor, which can be accessed under the Manage Tab – Customization Panel. Alternatively, you can also type CUI on the command line to open the Customize User Interface (CUI) Editor.

AutoCAD screenshot of CUI File Location

A cuix file stores all the interface customizations like the menus, ribbon tabs, and workspaces. It controls how the commands are organized and displayed on the Ribbon Tab. In addition, you can also add custom commands, keyboards shortcuts, LISP files, and change command images as well.

Once you open the CUI, All the customization files loaded into your AutoCAD will be listed under Customizations in Main File. The acad.cuix is the default customization file that is used by AutoCAD.

It’s always a good idea to backup the current customization file before making any changes. The customization file path is listed in the Properties Tab under General and Filename. Browse to the folder and make copy the customization file/s to a backup folder of your choice.

In this tutorial, we will add three very helpful commands to the Home Tab:

1. SAVEALL – This command saves all open drawings in your current AutoCAD session.

2. CLOSEALL – This command closes all open drawings, including the one currently displayed.

3. CLOSEALLOTHER – This command closes all drawings except the active one.

These commands are a part of the Express tools library which are provided with AutoCAD 2025 default installation. Enter EXPRESSTOOLS at command line to activate the Express Tools tab.

1. Launch the Customize User Interface (CUI) Editor.

2. In the left panel, expand the Ribbon Tab and the expand the Panels Tab.

3. Add a new panel and three rows. Give the panel a meaningful name, such as “Home – Drawing Management.”

4. Add commands to the rows. Simply search the command you want to add in the command List section and drag and drop it to the Row under the new panel we just created.

Pro Tip: Not all the commands have icons assigned to them by default. You can simply add the icons by clicking on one of the button images while the command is elected under Command List. You can also add meaningful descriptions under the Description field which will display when your hover over the command.

AutoCAD screenshot to add rows to panel

5. Set the Button style to SmallWithText for all commands. Panel Preview window will update the preview on how it would look on the Ribbon.

Screenshot of AutoCAD panel preview

6. Select the “Home – Drawing Management” panel and give it a meaningful display text like Drawing Management.

Screenshot of AutoCAD panel display text

7. Drag and drop or copy the new panel “Home – Drawing Management” to the bottom of the Home-2D Tab under Ribbon.

Screenshot of add new panel to ribbon tab

8. Press Apply and OK. Just like that, the new commands are added to the ribbon and are ready to be used.

Whether you are adding commands like “SAVEALL,” “CLOSEALL,” and “CLOSEALLOTHER” as we just covered in this blog or your most frequently used tools, customizing the ribbon can make your AutoCAD experience more tailored and productive.

Trump Administration Wants to Help Get Professional Misogynist Andrew Tate out of Romania

Off in the depths of the QAnon and PizzaGate corners of the internet, conspiracists swear Donald Trump is quietly preparing charges to bring down notorious sex trafficking circles operated by celebrities. Back in reality, the Financial Times reports the Trump administration is pressuring Romanian authorities to let Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan Tate travel freely despite facing charges of sexual misconduct and human trafficking.

Per the report, Trump officials have been pushing for Romania to return the Tates’ passports and lift travel restrictions on the brothers, who have been banned from leaving the country until their criminal case concludes. The pressure campaign started on phone calls last week and then got raised in-person when Trump special envoy Richard Grenell, who met with the Romanian foreign minister Emil Hurezeanu at the Munich Security conference.

Grenell—who served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany during his first term only to get iced out by German leaders for cozying up with the far-right, Nazi-aligned (and now Elon Musk-backed) Alternative for Germany (AfD)—has been publicly supportive of the Tates. In a post made earlier this month, Grenell seemed to suggest the Tate brothers were the victims of a concerted effort to target “conservatives around the world,” which he believed was funded by USAID programs.

So, okay, that’s one potential explanation of what happened to the Tates. The United States government, through a series of funds indirectly directed to Romania, successfully influenced the nation’s law enforcement apparatus to pursue anti-woke personalities and charge them with fake crimes in order to make an example of them.

Let’s try another one, just to see if it might make a little more sense. Tate, a self-described misogynist and “king of toxic masculinity” who was credibly accused of sexual abuse, fled his home in the United Kingdom and went to Romania as local law enforcement investigated allegations against him. While in Romania, which he claimed to have chosen in part because of the country’s lax laws against sex crimes, he and his brother operated an exploitative camgirl and porn website which allegedly included luring young women—some as young as 15—to their home and forcing them to partake in sexual acts on camera. Money made from the operation funded the Tates’ extravagant lifestyle, allowing them to develop a cult of personality that targeted disaffected young men and tempted them with the allure of their obscene image of masculinity.

All of that is pretty well documented, including by the Tates themselves who happily brag about all the people they have ripped off along the way. But maybe there’s an extremely elaborate international conspiracy afoot! Hard to say which is more likely. Occam’s razor is pretty dull these days.

In 2022, the Romanian government indicted the brothers on charges of human trafficking, sexual misconduct, money laundering, operating an organized crime group, and committing rape. As prosecutors continue to attempt to move the case forward, the Tates are prevented from leaving Romania. All the while, cases keep building against them. Last week, a woman in Florida accused the brothers of trying to recruit her into their webcam sex ring.

Meanwhile, the Romanian government might be more receptive to the Trump administration’s pressure soon. Last year, far-right politician Calin Georgescu unexpectedly won the first round of presidential voting in the country, though that victory was annulled by the nation’s highest court over concerns that the election process was corrupted by an outside influence campaign. Vice President JD Vance criticized the Romanian court over the decision, so should Georgescu take the highest office, communication between the leadership of the two countries might become more friendly, and Romania might be willing to hear the Trump administration’s calls to let up on the accused human traffickers.

visual studio – CMake trying to compile using multiple SDKs

I have build the Qt source on Windows 10 using Admin x64 Native Tools Command Prompt for VS 2019 and the command:

configure.bat -debug-and-release -platform win32-msvc -opensource -confirm-license -force-debug-info -webengine-proprietary-codecs -feature-vulkan -no-schannel -openssl-linked -prefix "C:\Qt\6.6.0" -- -D OPENSSL_ROOT_DIR="C:\Program Files\OpenSSL"

After the compilation have finished configure.bat > cmake --build . --parallel > cmake --install .

I had compiled the source many months ago until today I had not modified anything else in the sources or in any file on C:\Qt\6.6.0.
I did a small modification on qtextdocumentlayout.cpp and then i open Admin x64 Native Tools Command Prompt for VS 2019 again cd C:\Qt\6.6.0 and called ninja.

It started compiling the modifications and stopped with this error:

Thousands protest Elon Musk’s DOGE in NYC on Presidents’ Day

More than 10,000 protesters gathered in New York City on Presidents’ Day to speak out against the current Trump administration and the actions in particular of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

It was one of several protests that took place Monday in major cities across the country and came during the same long weekend that smaller protests sprouted up at Tesla dealerships across the country.

Protesters who spoke to TechCrunch from Washington Square Park, raised concerns about DOGE’s access to sensitive data of millions of Americans and the group’s dismantling of federal agencies. They said that they view Musk’s work with DOGE as a veiled attempt at a financial power grab, and expressed frustration that Musk, an unelected official, has gained unprecedented levels of power over the federal government.

“I think it’s extremely dangerous that [Musk] has access to our personal data,” Dmitri, 53, an architect who asked that his last name not be used, told TechCrunch. “He’s kind of a futurist fanboy who’s basically living in a sci-fi fantasy and trying to implement that, and has the resources to do mass amounts of damage. He’s tinkering with something that he doesn’t have the ability to actually understand.”

A 55-year-old retired teacher who identified himself only as Tom and who held a sign that read: “No one voted for Musk,” told TechCrunch, “As much as I dislike the fact that a significant number of Americans voted for Trump, it is absolutely the case that no one voted for Musk.”

Tom noted that he didn’t believe the average MAGA supporter voted for Musk and worried that DOGE’s cuts would hurt Americans on a state, local, and individual level.

“The consolidation of power under billionaires is a frightening thing,” he said.

Trump signed an executive order on his first day in office to create DOGE, giving Musk, the billionaire owner of SpaceX, Tesla, X, and other companies, the reins to root out government fraud, waste, and abuse of taxpayer dollars.

Since then, DOGE has fired nearly 10,000 federal workers who handled everything from managing federal lands to caring for military veterans. Another 75,000 workers have accepted the Trump administration’s buyout proposal, which in late January offered federal workers eight months pay and benefits to leave their posts if they resigned in early February. DOGE has also cut 104 government contracts related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility programs and dismantled the U.S. Agency for International Development.

Trump also granted Musk’s DOGE team access to the Treasury department’s digital payments system, which controls trillions of dollars in payments to Americans, from Social Security benefits to tax refunds, despite questions about their security clearances, their cybersecurity practices, and the legality of Musk’s activities.

Supporters of Trump and Musk applaud their on-paper efforts to root out corruption, inefficiency, and red tape. Opponents object to the way DOGE is going about its stated goals, and warn that the team’s actions will lead to more corruption and national security risks.

A wave of legal challenges has followed that allege a lack of transparency and data privacy violations.

The protesters in New York started at Union Square and marched to Washington Square Park, congregating under the iconic memorial arch dedicated to George Washington, the nation’s first president. They chanted “Hey, hey, ho, ho, Elon Musk has got to go,” and held signs that touted a range of causes, but Musk and DOGE were a common theme throughout.

The New York Police Department estimated the number of attendees to be more than 10,000.

Victoria, who identified herself as a 37-year-old teacher, held a sign that read: “Stop the coup,” echoing comments made to The Guardian on Monday by Arizona’s attorney general, Kris Mayes, who told told the outlet, “In the U.S., we appeal rulings we disagree with – we don’t ignore court orders or threaten judges with impeachment just because we don’t like the decision. This is a coup, plain and simple.”

“This is not about us disagreeing with Republican policies,” said Victoria, bundled up against the cold winds whipping through the city, where though sunny, temperatures hovered around 32 degrees Fahrenheit. “It’s the fact that Trump has handed over the power of the purse to Elon Musk, who is unelected.”

As people played music and shouted chants, their homemade signs raised over their heads, a 39-year-old small business owner who identified himself as Corwin said of Musk, “he’s so conflicted and it’s so clear that his antiregulatory attitudes benefit him personally and financially.”

Musk has targeted several agencies for reduction or dismantling that regulates industries in which his companies operate. Earlier this month, Musk said he wants to eliminate the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, which would regulate X’s planned expansion to financial services, posting on his social network X “CFBP RIP,” punctuated with a tombstone emoji.  He has stated an intention to go after the Federal Aviation Administration, an agency he’s clashed with before and one that regulates SpaceX. He has also called for ending a rule that requires automakers to report crashes when autonomous driving technology is engaged.

Musk’s actions at the federal level have affected Tesla’s brand image. During the automaker’s 2024 fourth-quarter earnings, analyst Thomas Monteiro of Investing.com noted that the hype around Tesla is trending downward due to, among other things, “severe brand devaluation.”

Stories are cropping up of people selling their Teslas out of a desire to no longer support Musk’s businesses. Some Cybertruck owners have reported instances of vandalism and harassment. The automaker’s sales, which were already beginning to suffer due to increased competition in the market and a stale lineup, have begun to plummet in Europe after a gesture by Musk, at the president’s inauguration, was interpreted by many as a Nazi salute. Poland’s sports and tourism minister Slawomir Nitras lobbied for a Tesla boycott, and in Germany, several companies have cut ties with Tesla in reaction to Musk’s support both for Trump and the far-right political party Alternative for Germany (AfD).

These Are the Best Smart Devices for Amazon Alexa in 2025

Privacy

Amazon’s voice assistant makes it easier to control the devices in your home, set timers and find out how long your commute to the office will take. Privacy has become an increasing concern as smart speakers and displays grow in popularity. Reports that Amazon keeps transcripts of your voice conversations, even after you’ve deleted the Alexa audio recordings, led to concerns over user privacy. Sen. Chris Coons, a Democrat from Delaware, wrote a letter to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos seeking answers about Amazon’s Alexa user data and how it’s stored.

Amazon has since introduced the “Alexa, delete everything I said today” feature. The tech giant says it’s also working on new ways for customers to delete their transcripts. For example, the Echo Show 8 comes with a built-in camera shutter, unlike earlier Echo Show devices.

Amazon isn’t alone in its privacy concerns. Its subsidiary Ring and other major tech companies such as Facebook and Google have faced their own privacy issues, prompting questions about data usage. Amazon and others appear to be working to win back consumer trust, but it is still an important factor to consider.

Type of smart home device

There are literally thousands of Alexa and Alexa-compatible devices that you can buy on the market right now, from smart speakers and home security devices to smart lighting and smart thermostats. Before you make a purchase, consider how you plan to use your Alexa device so you can be sure to find the one that best suits your needs.

Installation and set up

Amazon makes installation seamless with the help of Alexa voice commands. Plus, many of the best Alexa and Alexa-compatible devices offer a companion app to help with installation and controlling the device. Before buying an Alexa device, consider your other smart home devices, too. It wouldn’t necessarily make a ton of sense to buy an Alexa device if your smart home is already made up of an ecosystem of Google Assistant or Siri devices.

Price

Cost is always a factor. The good news is most of these Alexa devices are budget-friendly, ranging from $30 to $300, depending on the device.

It’s all part of the lovable lineup of seven games joining the cloud this week.

A Match Made in Gotham City

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy vs. regular Snapdragon 8 Elite: Is there a difference?

This year’s crop of flagship Android phones represents something of a victory lap for Qualcomm. Half a decade ago, Apple successfully scaled its A-series phone chips up to the laptop and desktop level. Now, Qualcomm is experiencing a similar leap in reverse. It designed laptop and desktop-class Snapdragon X Elite chips and brought their staple custom Oryon cores to the mobile system-on-a-chip (SoC) level with the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform.

As my colleague Harish Jonnalagadda recently confirmed in benchmark testing, the Snapdragon 8 Elite crushes what MediaTek and Google comparatively offer. However, Samsung and Qualcomm threw us a curveball when they co-designed the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy processor. It’s a custom chip based on the Snapdragon 8 Elite platform but tailored to the Samsung Galaxy S25 series of smartphones.

How to Extend the Lifespan of Your Commercial Roof

Owning a commercial building is a big investment that needs maximum protection to ensure every part lasts as long as possible. While each part of a commercial building relies on each other for all-round protection, the roof usually plays a more critical role in protecting your building. It keeps harsh elements from affecting your property’s structural integrity, ensuring longevity.

If a commercial roof isn’t well taken care of, it might not last to serve half of its lifespan. Planning for a roof replacement midway may not also be financially viable. To enjoy the full lifespan of your roof, here are some practical tips you should consider.

Schedule Regular Professional Repair and Maintenance

Even with a perfect installation, a commercial roof needs regular maintenance and repair to perform well in all seasons. Commercial roofing professionals are the first line of defense in roof maintenance and repair and will always help prevent damage escalation. They identify potential roofing issues early and take effective measures to ensure the overall health of your roofing system.

If you live in an area with severe weather conditions such as high winds, storms, or hail, ensure you schedule more frequent inspections after a weather event. This will help with timely repairs and maintenance processes.

Keep Your Roof Clean

A dirty roof full of leaves, branches, and debris is prone to water and ice damage. If you have trees close to your commercial buildings, it’s important that you have your roof cleaned more often to reduce the risk of damage. Simple cleaning routines like cleaning downspouts and drains can prevent minor roofing problems from compounding into significantly costly issues.

When debris is left to build up, it can clog your roof’s gutter or ventilation system, leading to water drainage issues and damage. If yours is a flat roof, ensure it’s cleaned more often, as these can hold onto more debris than steeper roofs.

Trim or Prune Nearby Trees

While trees offer good shade around your office and protect your roof from strong winds, they can also cause damage when left to grow irregularly over your roof. The dropping leaves and dead branches can be a pain to clear off your roof and a risk to your roof’s structural integrity.  Branches can also scratch your shingles and puncture or tear your roof membrane, leading to expensive repairs.

Trimming or pruning the trees next to your roof can minimize the risks of tree damage on your roof and reduce maintenance costs. Always keep an eye on every tree around your roof and alert a professional team anytime you notice signs of weakness in tree branches or an entire tree.

Limit Foot Traffic On Your Roof

Not every problem with the roof can be solved by climbing up there. Increased roof traffic can weaken roof features, causing expedited damage. Limit foot traffic to the very necessary tasks on the roof, like cleaning, professional inspection, and repair. Only allow professionals access to the roof when they’re offering a service.

A roof walkway system can be installed across the roof to allow workers to access your roof
