‘Specialists aren’t required’ anymore: How to stay valuable in an AI agent workplace today

ZDNET’s key takeaways

  • Polymaths will be in high demand in the age of AI.
  • These adaptable professionals will embrace agents.
  • They will ally AI skills with deep subject expertise.

Experts recognize that agentic AI is changing the workplace. From the deployment of intelligent assistants to the rise of autonomous businesses, agents are expected to fulfill a range of activities traditionally carried out by professionals.

While there’s agreement that agents will have a significant impact on operations, there’s less consensus on the role humans will play in the agentic-enabled workplace of the future.

However, what’s already clear is that the future of work will require a careful blend of human expertise and AI capabilities, with professionals working effectively and productively alongside their agentic counterparts.

Also: The new enterprise AI expert every company needs – and why

For Gerrit Kazmaier, president of product and technology at Workday, finding the right balance between human and AI agency presents new opportunities. He said earlier this year that agentic AI amplifies workers’ strengths, allowing them to function as polymaths.

Experts suggest the term polymath has its roots in Ancient Greek and describes someone who excels in multiple fields.

In the age of agentic AI, as suggested by Workday principal strategist Julie Colwell in a recent blog post, the rise of the polymath is associated with a shift in labor demand away from specialists who know everything about a single domain to professionals with knowledge across multiple disciplines.

Also: How Workday and other software providers plan to survive AI

Kathy Pham, vice president of AI at Workday, also acknowledged the rise of the polymath and told ZDNET that professionals who can work with agents across multiple areas simultaneously will be crucial.

“These are the gaps that we need to fill, and maybe we can then redirect our energy to higher-value areas, because we’ve now automated the less valuable parts of our working lives that took our time,” she said.

So, what will a successful polymath look like? Business leaders told us that two core characteristics will be crucial: adaptability to AI-enabled change and the confidence to make valuable decisions that agents can’t.

Embracing agentic change

Chris Kairinos, senior director of global modern workplace technology, client services, and technology operations at A+E Global Media, recognized that the polymath-like capabilities of adaptability and flexibility will be crucial as agents continue to take hold.

“Everybody needs just to embrace technology,” he told ZDNET, suggesting that a focus on expertise in one area is being replaced by the aptitude to work across many.

“I don’t think you need to master technology, because I don’t think there is a way to master it now,” continued Kairinos, insinuating the key components of technology-enabled work are likely to change on what feels like an almost constant basis.

Also: The 3 types of people who will excel in the AI agent era, according to tech leaders

Kairinos used the analogy of a musical instrument to explain skills development in the AI era. Rather than learning to play a piano once, professionals must be able to tune their skills to embrace modified instruments quickly and effectively.

“It’s as if 30 different keys are being added to a piano. The shape of the piano is changing; there are now three layers of keys on that piano, and there are an extra three pedals,” he said.

“If the piano is changing all the time, how are you ever going to become a master? In those conditions, you can’t. You’ve just got to be adaptable enough to be able to use it.”

Such is the pace of change with AI, said David Minahan, director of digital, data, and technology at UK charity Young Lives vs. Cancer, that business leaders must create a learning and development strategy that acknowledges the demand for polymath-like capabilities.

Also: AI agents are your new colleagues – how to get the best results

But there’s a twist. While tightly defined specialists are out, in-demand polymaths are unlikely to be expected to work across multiple functions.

“I think generalists are too broad,” he told ZDNET, referring to the shift. “Specialists aren’t required in most businesses anymore because AI leverages knowledge differently. For this reason, I’ve deliberately taken a strategy to create ‘versatilists.'”

As AI completes repetitive and mundane work, Minahan said his versatilists should be comfortable applying their skills across many areas, such as discussions with business stakeholders to identify valuable digital transformation projects.

“I’ve got that approach in my internal strategy,” he said. “Our people are expected to work across the tech stack. And it’s a deliberate point: generalists aren’t necessary, but versatility is.”

Also: 40% of enterprises will scrap AI agents – 3 ways to ensure yours don’t fail

Crucially, Minahan said his team can also see the benefits of becoming versatilists.

“There is a history in IT where people get pigeonholed in certain things, and it’s difficult for them to move,” he said. “So, I’ve created this language and pathway that means actually, if you’re smart, you’re motivated, and you’re talented, you could do any of these things.”

Adding extra value

Ankur Anand, group CIO at recruiter Harvey Nash, also recognized the importance of professional versatility.

Yes, becoming a polymath — someone who can move beyond traditional role definitions into new areas — resonates, but in a particular sense: the best professionals will use AI to extend their specific skills rather than becoming generalists across multiple areas.

“Every professional who’s actually pulling ahead right now is an expert whose specialism has stretched to include directing, questioning, and correcting AI that works alongside them,” he told ZDNET. “That split is different [from] becoming a jack of all trades, and it’s a much more useful goal for anyone building a career around this shift.”

Also: AI is causing cognitive fatigue. Here’s how to work with more haste and less speed

Rather than juggling multiple careers, Anand suggested successful professionals will use AI to boost their current working practices.

The key to success will be whether your expertise is deep enough to know when an agent is making the wrong choices.

He gave the example of technology firm Snowflake, where on an average day, engineers work with multiple agents. One head of engineering spends 20 to 30 hours a week directing five agents, reviewing their design choices, and deciding when code is good enough to ship.

“His deep technical background is exactly what lets him catch the agents when they get something wrong,” said Anand. “Someone with only a shallow, general grasp of engineering would have nothing solid enough to check the agents’ work against.”

Also: Forget productivity: Here are 5 strategic shifts that drive real AI value

As these highly skilled polymaths become the norm, versatility won’t just be a core skill for IT professionals.

Minahan said responsibilities in all functions will change as employees work alongside agents.

“For lots of organizations’ operational aspects, whether that’s in sales, marketing, HR, finance, administration, service delivery, or product creation, you will have an expanse of people possibly in very different job descriptions in a few years as part of a versatile workforce, leveraging tools like AI for specific knowledge and insight,” he said.

Anand can see this pattern emerging in his own industry, recruitment. Yes, an AI sourcing tool can scan thousands of candidate profiles against a job spec faster than any person. However, the placements that matter, the senior technical hires and the roles with genuinely scarce skills, still come down to a consultant who’s spent years inside one specific market, knowing what skills and experience work best for the hiring manager’s needs.

In short, the best polymaths will be the professionals who use their experience to add the valuable human touch that no AI can provide.

“They’re the specialists who know a candidate who looks like a moderate match on paper might be the far better fit, while one who ticks every box on the spec sheet would walk out within six months,” said Anand.

“That judgment is built from pattern recognition earned over years in a narrow field. No AI tool builds it for you, and no amount of general knowledge substitutes for it.”

Saber CEO scorns writer who says she was fired in favor of AI with confusing, combative statement

After noticing the announcement of upcoming driving sim Rideshare Stimulator, writer Stella Sacco commented on social media that she’d once been the game’s lead writer but had been fired in favor of ChatGPT. The game’s publisher, Saber Interactive, denied the claim, stating that while it did use generative AI in the development of Rideshare Stimulator (which has not yet been disclosed on its Steam page), the story was written “entirely by real people.”

Sacco acknowledged that the studio may have changed direction since she was removed from the project in 2023, but stood by her recollection. That could have been the end of it, but now a confusing, combative follow-up from Saber CEO Matt Karch is raising eyebrows.

D23’s Kingdom Hearts Panel Will Only Be Streamed Live

It’s been two months since the surprise drop of a new Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer during a Nintendo Direct livestream, and fans have a new reason to get their hopes up for more news very soon.

Disney is celebrating the 25th anniversary of Kingdom Hearts in 2027. That celebration kicks off this weekend with a special panel at Disney’s D23 fan expo that brings together some of the key developers and voice actors behind the franchise. Anyone can watch the whole thing on YouTube — but only if they tune in live, Square Enix says.

The “Deep Dive into Kingdom Hearts” panel will stream on the official Kingdom Hearts YouTube channel on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. EDT. According to Square Enix, the livestream will not be made available as a video on demand afterward. In other words, if you don’t watch it live, then you probably won’t be able to watch it at all — which seems like an odd choice considering the fact that YouTube probably makes it pretty easy to just publish livestreams automatically.

kh panel d23 promo image Image: Disney

The hourlong presentation will feature Nana Gadd of Disney and Pixar Games alongside Square Enix developer Tai Yasue. Haley Joel Osment and David Gallagher, the longtime English-language voices of Sora and Riku, respectively, will also appear, as will Disney Character Voices executive Renée Johnson.

“Join us for a journey through light and darkness as we commemorate 25 years of Kingdom Hearts,” Disney’s official description reads. “Discover how this saga united Disney, Pixar, and Square Enix, with insights from the creative minds, character voices, and more behind the magic.”

The panel has officially been framed as a “behind-the-scenes look at the making of the games,” but Yasue’s presence has fans wondering whether Disney and Square Enix might also offer another look at Kingdom Hearts 4. After all, celebrating 25 years of Kingdom Hearts technically involves the trajectory of the series and its future. Neither Disney nor Square Enix has confirmed outright that Kingdom Hearts 4 will appear during the panel.

Square Enix first revealed Kingdom Hearts 4 in 2022 during a 20th anniversary panel, but updates remained virtually nonexistent until the new trailer dropped in June 2026.

The D23 anniversary panel feels a natural venue for Square Enix to share more, even if that amounts to behind-the-scenes details rather than another extended preview. Though a new English-language trailer with a release date confirmation does sound like an exciting way to end an hour-long panel like this. The June announcement did confirm a multiplatform launch across Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Does that mean the launch is sooner rather than later?

Disney is promising that the Deep Dive livestream will “surprise and delight” Kingdom Hearts fans. That could mean news about the next game, new details about the franchise’s history, or simply the opportunity to hear Sora and Riku’s actors chat about 25 years of friendship, rivalry, and some very complicated lore about Darkness, Nobodies, and a lot of characters with X in their name. Whatever happens, fans will have to tune in live to see it.

How to Become a Certified Arborist: Complete Guide

How to Become a Certified Arborist
Deposit Photos

Working with trees involves much more than cutting branches. Arborists study tree health, soil conditions, pests, structural defects and safe work practices. They may work for:

  • municipalities
  • tree-care companies
  • utilities
  • parks
  • nurseries
  • consulting firms

In Canada, the path can seem confusing at first. You may encounter:

  • ISA credentials
  • college programs
  • apprenticeships
  • provincial trade certificates

Every option serves a different purpose in your career. For most people, to become a certified arborist means earning the ISA Certified Arborist credential. However, some provinces also offer separate apprenticeship and trade-certification routes. Understanding this difference will help you plan your next steps properly.

Understand What ISA Certification Represents

The International Society of Arboriculture offers the ISA Certified Arborist credential. It confirms that you passed an exam covering broad arboricultural knowledge. The program is available in English and French – which helps Canadian applicants.

ISA certification is not a government licence or provincial trade certificate. It also does not give automatic permission to operate a business. Local laws, insurance rules and municipal requirements may still apply.

However, the credential can support applications for municipal or private-sector positions. It shows employers and clients that you understand accepted tree-care principles.

Use Education to Reduce the Experience Requirement

Relevant education may reduce the amount of required field experience. However, your completed program must include enough arboriculture-related coursework.

A two-year degree with two relevant courses requires two years of practical experience. A four-year degree with four relevant courses requires one year. Certain assessed certificate programs may also reduce the work requirement.

Submit official transcripts showing course names and completed training hours. Do not assume every forestry or horticulture program receives automatic approval.

Ask ISA to review unclear education before planning your exam date. This step can prevent delays during the application process.

Explore Provincial Apprenticeship Options

Canadian apprenticeship rules are different across all their provinces and territories. You should check the skilled-trades authority where you plan to work.

Ontario offers an Arborist apprenticeship combining workplace and classroom instruction. The program generally includes 5400 workplace hours and 720 classroom hours. Apprentices study tree identification, health care, pruning, removal, rigging and safety. Graduates can write a provincial certifying examination afterward.

British Columbia uses a progressive arboriculture training system. Arborist Technician training includes eight weeks of technical instruction and 1,600 workplace hours. Workers must complete this level before entering the Climbing Arborist program.

Provincial training can develop practical skills before an ISA application. However, completing an apprenticeship does not automatically provide ISA credentials.

Apply for the ISA Examination

Once you meet the requirements, create an account through ISA’s credentialing system. Complete the online application and upload your supporting documents.

Self-employed applicants need additional proof of their experience. ISA may request three reference letters, invoices, contracts, or business records. Submitted applications are generally reviewed within five United States business days.

Approved candidates can choose between these examination formats:

  • Computer-based testing is available through Pearson VUE centres.
  • Paper examinations may be offered through ISA partner organizations.

The current application fee is US$40 for ISA members. Non-members currently pay US$50 for their application. Examination enrolment costs US$295 for members and US$369 for non-members. Check current pricing before applying because fees may change.

Prepare for the Certification Exam

The examination contains 200 multiple-choice questions. Candidates receive three and a half hours for completion. Twenty questions are unscored trial questions, although candidates cannot identify them. The current passing score is 76 percent.

Your study plan should cover every exam area:

  • Tree biology and identification require regular review and field practice.
  • Soil management includes irrigation, fertilization, aeration, and root health.
  • Diagnosis covers pests, diseases, disorders, and environmental damage.
  • Pruning questions test objectives, methods, timing, and tree responses.
  • Safety includes climbing awareness, equipment, electrical hazards, and job planning.
  • Tree risk topics include defects, targets, likelihood, and recommended action.

Use the official exam outline before buying study materials. Divide your study time according to each section’s exam weight.

Practise answering questions without books or online notes. The actual examination does not permit reference materials or mobile devices.

Maintain Your Credential After Passing

Passing the exam does not complete your professional education. ISA certification remains valid for three years.

You can renew your certification after you become a certified arborist by successfully retaking the examination. Most arborists instead collect at least 30 continuing education units during each cycle. ISA also requires a recertification payment and a renewed agreement with its ethics rules.

Training workshops, approved courses, conferences, and webinars may provide eligible units. Record each activity rather than waiting until your final year.

Pixel 11 introduces a new way for deaf users to communicate with people who don’t know sign language

Google’s new Pixel 11 series devices bring more than just hardware upgrades. One of the lineup’s most interesting new features is designed to break down the communication barrier between deaf and hard-of-hearing users and those who don’t know sign language.

Pixel Camera can now turn sign language into text

Google has introduced a new sign-to-text accessibility feature that uses the Pixel Camera to recognize sign language and automatically convert it into text, so users can sign as they normally would instead of stopping to type a response. Google says the goal is to turn the phone from a one-way listening tool into one that supports natural, two-way conversation during spontaneous, face-to-face interactions.

SL2T is our breakthrough sign language-to-text model powering new features for Deaf and hard of hearing users on @Android.

Starting with American Sign Language-to-English on Pixel 11, people can sign directly into Gboard and Live Transcribe instead of typing. pic.twitter.com/p9Vx7tJtLT

— Google DeepMind (@GoogleDeepMind) August 12, 2026

The feature runs on a new AI model called sign-language-to-text (SL2T), built by Google DeepMind, which the company says marks a breakthrough in translating sign language at scale. Once the Pixel Camera captures a user signing, the model translates it, and Gboard converts it into text anywhere someone would normally type, including web searches, messages, documents, and Gemini queries.

At launch, the feature supports American Sign Language to English translations on the Pixel 11 series, with Google saying more languages and support for additional devices will follow.

Built with privacy and real-world signing in mind

To protect privacy, the system tracks the location points on a signer’s body on-device instead of analyzing raw video, sending only those coordinates to Google’s servers for translation before discarding the original camera feed. Google DeepMind says the model was trained on more than 100,000 hours of data across more than 50 sign languages, and that it specifically tested performance for left-handed signers, who make up about 10 percent of users, and for one-handed signing, common when someone is holding the phone in their other hand.

The company says the model scored higher on a standard sign language translation benchmark than any previous system, though it hasn’t published data on how it performs in less controlled settings, poor lighting, or fast, casual conversation.

Translating sign language is a fundamentally different problem than translating speech, since sign languages have their own independent grammar and vocabulary instead of word-for-word mapping. An estimated 70 million deaf and hard-of-hearing people worldwide use sign language, and Google DeepMind says this marks the first time sign language AI at this scale has reached a consumer product. Whether SL2T holds up in fast, everyday signing, rather than the benchmark conditions Google has published so far, will determine if it becomes a genuine communication tool or another AI feature that undersells its own demo.

Saber admit Rideshare “Stimulator” features generative AI writing, but deny they replaced taxi game’s lead writer with ChatGPT

When Saber revealed Rideshare “Stimulator”, Oisin was guardedly interested in the unofficial Uber simulator. You play a taxi operator picking up and dropping passengers around town while listening to their stimulating conversation. You thought the name referred to a different kind of stimulation? Get your head out of the gutter.

Though, maybe not too far out of the gutter. After all, since its reveal, Rideshare’s gained more attention for its odd swipes at Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford and that time he left a USB stick at a Medieval Times restaurant which contained sensitive business documents and videos he described as “barely legal porn”. Saber CEO Matt Karch told Gamefile “The dig is because Randy took shots at Embracer in Borderlands 4. Without Embracer, Randy is performing magic tricks at birthday parties for a living.”

However, now Rideshare is coming under even greater scrutiny because the game’s former lead writer, Stella Sacco, said on Bluesky that “Saber replaced me with ChatGPT midway through development”. And, while Saber denies her account, they have admitted the game features generative AI. Use they’ve not disclosed on the game’s Steam listing, contravening Valve’s AI policy.

India’s Yulu raises $93M as quick-commerce boom fuels e-bike demand

As India’s quick-commerce platforms race to deliver everything from groceries to smartphones in minutes, electric mobility startup Yulu has seized the boom, raising $93 million in fresh funding.

The Bengaluru‑based startup offers electric two‑wheelers on weekly subscription plans, so delivery drivers can jump straight into the gig economy without buying their own vehicles. With around 50,000 vehicles in its fleet, Yulu reports that it logs about 1.6 million zero‑emission miles each week and powers more than 750,000 deliveries a day. The new funding will let Yulu grow that fleet to 200,000 bikes over the next two years and launch faster electric two-wheelers aimed at new logistics use cases.

The Series C round comprised $63 million in equity led by GEF Capital Partners and $30 million in debt financing. About $5.5 million of the equity component was used to buy shares from seed investors whose funds were nearing the end of their investment life, co-founder and CEO Amit Gupta said in an interview.

The deal valued Yulu at about $170 million post-money, people familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. Gupta declined to comment when asked about the valuation and did not dispute the figure.

Existing investors Bajaj Auto and Magna International did not participate in the round after waiving their pre-emptive rights, allowing GEF to acquire its target ownership stake, Gupta said. He added that the startup expects this to be its final equity fundraising before an eventual public listing, with future fleet expansion financed primarily through debt and lease financing.

The business moves toward becoming profitable before interest and taxes next year, after achieving positive EBITDA last financial year, Gupta told TechCrunch. The startup also grew its revenue seven-fold between fiscal 2023 and fiscal 2026, he said, without sharing specifics.

The COVID shift

Founded as a bike-sharing startup for urban commuters in 2017, Yulu found its biggest opportunity during the COVID-19 pandemic as demand for food and grocery deliveries accelerated.

Today, Gupta told TechCrunch that about 95% of Yulu’s revenue comes from renting electric bikes to gig workers on weekly subscriptions, while the rest is generated by its station‑based rental service in Bengaluru. The startup has also dropped an earlier plan to sell bikes directly to consumers.

To fuel its next growth phase, Yulu is introducing a full-sized, higher‑speed electric scooter, called Yulu Express. It is designed for longer‑haul e‑commerce deliveries, bike taxis, and express parcel services — areas that its slower fleet could not previously cover.

About a third of the planned 200,000‑vehicle fleet will be made up of this new model, Gupta said.

While Yulu’s current low‑speed fleet is built by Bajaj Auto, the new high‑speed scooter comes from a different Indian manufacturer that Gupta declined to name.

About 500 of the new bikes are already running in Bengaluru and are being trialed in three additional cities, Gupta told TechCrunch.

Currently, Yulu operates in 12 Indian cities, running its own operations in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi‑NCR, and Hyderabad, while partnering with franchisees in eight other markets. The startup, Gupta said, aims to reach roughly 20 cities within the next year, with Chennai and Pune among the key targets for expansion.

Gupta stated that Yulu partners with almost every major quick‑commerce, food‑delivery, and e‑commerce platform — including Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart — though its customers are the gig workers who rent the bikes, not the platforms themselves. He compared Yulu’s role to “the AWS of mobility,” supplying the infrastructure that lets delivery workers operate without any third-party logistics providers taking a cut.

Samsung is Starting to Catch Up to Apple on Hearing Health

Samsung today said its Galaxy Buds Hearing Aid feature has been cleared by the U.S. FDA, which means hearing aid capabilities will be coming to the Galaxy Buds in the fourth quarter of 2026.

samsung galaxy buds 3
Samsung will join Apple in offering over-the-counter hearing aid functionality. Apple added an FDA-cleared hearing health feature to the AirPods back in 2024, allowing them to be used as a clinical-grade hearing aid.

Like the AirPods, the Galaxy Buds can replace a hearing aid for mild to moderate hearing loss, and Samsung is introducing a Hearing Test option like Apple did. Galaxy Buds users can do a self-administered hearing test in five minutes and the resulting clinical-grade audiogram can be used to adjust the built-in Hearing Aid feature.

The Galaxy Buds will amplify the sounds users have difficulty hearing, like high frequencies or whispers, which is also how the AirPods work. Noise elimination and beamforming also help Galaxy Buds users by focusing on the sounds in front of the user and suppressing background noise.

Samsung says it worked with the National Acoustic Laboratories and Samsung Medical Center to develop the hearing aid feature set. Hearing Aid features will be available on the Galaxy Buds3 Pro and the Galaxy Buds4 Pro. A newer Samsung Galaxy smartphone that supports One UI 8 or later is required.

After introducing hearing aid features in the U.S. in iOS 18.1, Apple has expanded availability to over 150 countries and regions. Apple had a two-year head start, but Samsung is now starting to catch up with a Galaxy Buds hearing health option that matches most of what the AirPods can do.

Laptop Charging Port Warning Signs in Frisco, TX

How Can I Tell If My Laptop’s Charging Port Is Failing in Frisco, TX?

A laptop charging port may be failing if the charger feels loose, charging starts and stops when the cable moves, the laptop only charges at a certain angle, the port looks damaged, or a known-good compatible charger still does not work reliably. These symptoms can also come from the charger or battery, so professional diagnosis is the safest way to identify the actual problem.

At PC Geeks, we help Frisco-area laptop owners determine why their computers are not charging properly and what repair makes the most sense. Charging problems can be frustrating because several components can produce similar symptoms, including the AC adapter, battery, charging port, USB-C controller, and motherboard. Rather than replacing parts based on guesswork, a proper diagnosis can isolate the source of the failure and help prevent unnecessary repairs. Whether you use your laptop for remote work, school, running a business, gaming, or everyday tasks, addressing an unreliable charging connection early can reduce the chance of the problem becoming more serious.

Laptop Charging Port Problems: Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

A failing charging port usually becomes noticeable through an unreliable physical or electrical connection. The problem may begin intermittently before the laptop eventually stops recognizing the charger altogether.

Dell recommends inspecting charging ports for dust, debris, bent pins, and physical damage when diagnosing a laptop that will not charge. Dell also notes that charging problems can originate from several sources, including the AC adapter, battery hardware, charging port, software, or drivers.

What Are the Most Common Signs of a Bad Laptop Charging Port?

The clearest warning sign is charging behavior that changes when the connector moves. If your laptop starts charging only after you wiggle the plug or position it at a particular angle, the connection between the charger and laptop may be compromised.

Common warning signs include:

  • The charger feels unusually loose inside the port.
  • Charging repeatedly connects and disconnects.
  • You must hold or position the cable at an angle.
  • The laptop does not consistently recognize a compatible charger.
  • The charging port has bent components, cracks, or other visible damage.
  • The connector will not remain securely seated.
  • A USB-C charging port also has intermittent data or display problems.
  • Charging stops when the laptop or cable is moved.

For USB-C laptops in particular, movement-related problems deserve attention. Dell identifies intermittent functionality when a USB-C cable moves as a potential sign of cable or connection damage. The company also documents how improper handling can contribute to loose ports, damaged connectors, cracked port housings, and broken internal solder joints.

Do not repeatedly wiggle or force a connector to make the laptop charge. That may place additional stress on an already damaged connection.

How Do I Know If the Problem Is the Charging Port, Charger, or Battery?

Testing with a known-good, correctly rated charger is one of the simplest ways to narrow down a charging problem, but it does not replace a complete diagnosis.

If another compatible charger works normally, your original adapter or cable may be the problem. If multiple compatible chargers produce the same intermittent connection, particularly when movement affects charging, the laptop’s port becomes a stronger suspect.

Battery problems can look different. A laptop that recognizes its charger normally but cannot maintain battery capacity may have an aging or defective battery instead of a damaged port. An adapter with insufficient wattage can also power some laptops without properly charging the battery, according to Dell.

Before assuming the port has failed, check:

  1. The wall outlet: Confirm it works with another device.
  2. The charger: Look for fraying, bent components, overheating, or cable damage.
  3. The connection: See whether the charger sits securely without needing pressure.
  4. The port: Look for lint, debris, cracks, or obvious physical damage.
  5. The laptop’s specifications: Make sure the charger provides the correct wattage and that the USB-C port, if applicable, actually supports charging.

That last point is important because not every USB-C port supports the same functions. Dell notes that some laptop USB-C ports support power delivery, while others may be intended only for data transfer.

Why Do Laptop Charging Ports Become Loose or Damaged?

Physical stress is one of the biggest threats to a laptop charging connection. Pulling on the cord instead of the connector, tripping over a plugged-in charger, or repeatedly placing sideways pressure on the plug can damage the cable, port housing, or internal connection.

USB-C connectors are engineered for extensive everyday use. The USB Implementers Forum specification rates the USB Type-C connector family for a minimum of 10,000 insertion and extraction cycles under its durability testing requirements. That durability does not mean the port is immune to accidental impacts, sharp bending, contamination, or sideways force.

To help protect your charging port:

  • Unplug the charger by gripping the connector, not pulling the cord.
  • Insert and remove the connector straight rather than at an angle.
  • Avoid using the laptop where the charger is stretched tightly across a walkway.
  • Keep food, liquids, dust, and debris away from the port.
  • Do not rest objects against a USB-C connector while it is plugged in.

Dell specifically advises avoiding sharp bends and twists near USB-C connectors because excessive stress can damage cables and shorten their working life.

When Should I Have a Laptop Charging Port Professionally Repaired?

Seek professional help when charging becomes consistently intermittent, the port is visibly damaged, or multiple known-good chargers fail to make a reliable connection.

Continuing to use a damaged port can turn an inconvenient charging problem into a more complicated repair. Some ports are separate replaceable components, while others are attached directly to a laptop’s motherboard. Internal damage can also occur even when the outside of the port appears relatively normal.

Dell notes that damaged USB-C connections can include broken solder joints inside the device, which may cause the port to lose functionality despite limited visible external damage.

For laptop owners in Frisco, TX, dependable charging is particularly important for people moving between home, school, offices, and coworking environments. Frisco’s hot North Texas summers are another reason to treat laptops carefully. The City of Frisco describes the area as having hot summers, with an average August maximum temperature of 96.1°F. Avoid leaving laptops and chargers in hot vehicles for extended periods, and give electronics adequate ventilation while charging.

PC Geeks can evaluate the charging system and determine whether the issue comes from the adapter, battery, port, or another internal component before recommending the appropriate repair.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laptop Charging Ports

Can a loose laptop charging port be fixed?

Yes. A loose charging port can often be repaired or replaced, depending on the laptop’s design and the extent of the damage. A technician should inspect the port and its connection to the internal hardware before determining the appropriate repair.

Why does my laptop only charge when I move the charger?

Charging that cuts in and out when the connector moves can indicate a damaged cable, loose connector, worn port, or damaged internal connection. Dell specifically identifies movement-related intermittent functionality as a symptom associated with USB-C connection problems.

Can dirt inside a laptop charging port stop it from charging?

Yes. Dust, lint, and debris can interfere with the connection between the charger and port. Dell recommends inspecting the charging port for debris as part of troubleshooting, but avoid inserting metal tools or forcing objects into the port.

Does a laptop that won’t charge always need a new charging port?

No. A failed charger, damaged cable, worn battery, insufficient adapter wattage, software issue, or USB-C controller problem can also cause charging failures. Proper testing is important before replacing the port.
