US: Russia Has Launched an Anti-Satellite Weapon

The US government has accused Russia of launching a new anti-satellite weapon. The object, which Russia has refused to positively identify, appears to be operating in space near an important US satellite. Independent sky watchers can confirm Russia’s new satellite is suspiciously close to the US asset, but no one outside of Russia’s Defense Ministry can say what exactly it’s doing up there.

The mysterious satellite launched into low Earth orbit on May 16. At a recent Pentagon briefing, Major General Patrick Ryder was asked about the Russian spacecraft by a US ambassador. Ryder confirmed the government was monitoring the object and believes it to be an anti-satellite weapon.

“Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we assess is likely a counter-space weapon presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit,” said Ryder. The general did not elaborate on any reasons the Russian satellite has been identified as a weapon rather than just another surveillance operation.

On X (formerly Twitter), astronomer Jonathan McDowell has confirmed that the Russian satellite, known as K-2576, is indeed hanging around US 314, an equally mysterious satellite launched in 2021. US 314 is managed by the National Reconnaissance Office, which suggests it is a spy satellite, but the press briefing didn’t go into detail on that, either. McDowell notes that K-2576 is in the same orbital plane as US 314, but the closest approach is currently several hundred kilometers. He notes that K-2576 will probably close the gap to shadow US 314 soon.

In a follow-up post, McDowell expresses skepticism that K-2576 is an anti-satellite weapon. He correctly points out that Russia has launched numerous satellites that simply observe US assets in space but do not attack them. On the other hand, Russia launching a space-based weapon would not be out of the ordinary, either. The Russian Defense Ministry has tested anti-satellite weapons in the past, and the country regularly boasts about its ability to interfere with orbital assets belonging to foreign adversaries. Russia has not followed through on those threats just yet.

Ryder mentioned several past examples of Russian anti-satellite weapons in the briefing. An alleged test of a Russian satellite killer in 2021 produced a cloud of debris that threatened the ISS the following year. NASA was able to move the station out of harm’s way. Still, there is grave concern about what could happen to the nation’s orbital assets if multiple satellites were destroyed in a coordinated attack. Such an escalation could also threaten SpaceX’s Starlink constellation, which Russia has directly threatened due to its availability in Ukraine.

Latest Google Pay updates aim to simplify your online shopping and checkout experience

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Google Pay will now display relevant card benefits during checkout for select cards.
  • The “Buy Now, Pay Later” options are expanding to more online stores and Android apps.
  • Autofill in Chrome and Android will now allow users to fill in all card details, including security codes.

Google has announced a series of updates to its online payment platform, Google Pay. This is not to be confused with the Google Pay app, which is used for peer-to-peer payments and is being phased out in the US in June. Both are separate from Google Wallet, a digital storage solution for various credentials. I know; Google *needs* a lesson in intuitive naming.

Nevertheless, the company highlighted three key areas of improvement, addressing user concerns about security, convenience, and smart spending tools.

Card benefits visibility

Google Pay displaying card benefits at checkout

Among the most notable changes is a new feature that displays relevant credit card benefits during checkout. This feature is currently rolling out for select American Express and Capital One cardholders using Chrome on desktop. It aims to help users make informed decisions by highlighting cashback percentages, point multipliers, and other perks associated with each card. Google plans to expand this functionality to more cards in the future, potentially making it a valuable tool for savvy shoppers.

More BNPL options

Google Pay is expanding its support for “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) services for US shoppers. This feature, which allows shoppers to split payments into installments, was initially piloted earlier this year with select merchants. Google Pay is now integrating BNPL more broadly across various online stores and Android apps, partnering with providers like Affirm and Zip.

Autofill convenience

Google Pay autofill verification update

Google Pay is enhancing the autofill feature in Chrome and Android to expedite the checkout process. Now, instead of manually entering your card information and security code, you can choose to autofill all details, including the security code, by using your device’s existing unlock method (fingerprint, face scan, or PIN).

For added security, users can opt to set up device unlock, which requires unlocking your device before Google Pay reveals the full card details. The company claims that Google Pay may still require manual security code entry in certain situations, such as when suspicious activity is detected.

Overall, these enhancements aim to make Google Pay a more user-friendly and secure payment option for online shoppers. Whether Google’s security measures will adequately protect sensitive card data remains to be seen.

Should you play Hellblade 1 before playing Hellblade 2?

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is here to continue, well, Senua’s saga. Hellblade 2 picks up an indeterminate amount of time after 2017’s Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

The events of Hellblade 1 have a definite effect on Hellblade 2 — specifically on Senua — but do you have to have played Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice to enjoy Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2? Let’s break it down.

Should you play Hellblade 1 before playing Hellblade 2?

The short answer is: You don’t have to play Hellblade 1 before playing Hellblade 2.

There’s a handy (skippable) recap movie when you start a new game of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. What’s more, the events of the Senua’s Sacrifice are more backdrop than foundational to the events of Senua’s Saga — they’re good to know and they flesh out the world, but they’re not strictly necessary.

Hellblade 2 image from the recap video

Image: Ninja Theory/Xbox Game Studios via Polygon

Regardless, when you start a new game, you’ll get a five-minute video with carved megalith visuals that covers all of the events of Hellblade 1. It’s thorough enough to get you up to speed for Hellblade 2 without too many questions.

If you missed anything in the video, though, here’s the crash course to get you ready for Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2: Senua hears voices (the Furies). Her mother heard voices too. Senua’s father was a bad man and killed her mother because he thought the voices were evil. Senua fell in love, but it didn’t go well. People died. Senua continued to hear voices, and now had another voice in her head — her father’s (The Darkness and, later, the Shadow). Senua went to Hel(l) to retrieve her lost love and kill a god. She was half-successful, finally learning to accept loss as part of life (but still stabbing a god). She learned to live with the voices as a part of her.

That last part is why the voices you’ll hear throughout Hellblade 2 are kind of neither encouraging or discouraging — they’ve taken on a role more as observers or commenters (or a Greek chorus) than as antagonists.

    result = subprocess.run(command, capture_output=True, text=True)
    print(result.stdout)
    print(result.stderr)

if __name__ == "__main__":
    main()

Question:

How can I configure VSCode to properly execute the DeepEval package within the debugger? Is there something wrong with my launch.json configuration, or is there a better way to set this up?

Linktree surpasses 50M users, rolls out its social commerce program to more creators

Link-in-bio startup Linktree said on Wednesday that it has surpassed 50 million users.

The figure represents a significant uptick from the 2.7 million users the company had in 2019. The company has been growing consistently, adding nearly 10 million users (or Linkers, as Linktree calls them) in the span of just five months: In December, the company told TechCrunch that it had 41 million users, and it reported over 47 million users this March.

Linktree is considered one of the top link-in-bio tools on the market, with its rivals owning a significantly smaller portion of the pie: competitor Later has around 7 million users, whereas Beacons has over 2 million.

“It’s astounding to see the scale we’ve reached by being Linker-first — now empowering more than 50 million Linkers with a space that they own, to grow and monetize,” Linktree’s co-founder and CEO, Alex Zaccaria, said in a statement to TechCrunch.

The company said it is also launching the beta of its social commerce offering. The new program, which was in alpha back in March, lets creators add storefronts to their link-in-bio pages and take a 12% to 15% commission on sales. All users will be able to apply to join the program later this year.

The experiment initially launched with a few brands (Revolve, Sephora, and Urban Outfitters) and was only available to a few creators. Starting today, Linktree is opening it up to more users and has added over 2,000 brands, including Adidas, Lululemon, New Balance and Net-a-Porter. Creators can access a huge product catalog featuring thousands of items that they can highlight on their storefronts.

The company also added a new feature in tandem with the beta launch: Users can now upload user-generated content to promote relevant content from their social media accounts alongside recommended products.

Linktree’s social commerce offering could prove helpful to influencers, as it gives them the means to effectively monetize their audience. The global market for social commerce is predicted to reach $1.2 trillion by 2025, according to Accenture.

“The goal of the program is to supercharge the organic social commerce activity we’re seeing on-platform, making this easier for both Linkers and brands,” Lara Cohen, Linktree’s vice president of brand development, told TechCrunch. “We estimate that Linkers are driving upwards of $6 billion in annual [gross merchandise value] via their Linktrees already. We want to reduce friction and increase conversion by cutting down the number of clicks required to make a purchase, and enabling customers to discover the products that Linkers love directly on their Linktrees.”

The new program is indicative of Linktree’s intention to evolve into a more versatile service with more revenue streams.

Linktree had over 240 million commerce clicks from links in the past month, converting to approximately $300 million in monthly commerce sales, a company spokesperson said, citing proprietary data.

Linktree has come a long way since its inception in 2016, and is today used by everyone from part-time content creators to celebrities like Demi Lovato, Paris Hilton, and Robert Downey Jr. Even The White House uses the link-in-bio solution to direct U.S. citizens to online resources.

The company also made significant investments in the past year, acquiring two smaller startups in the link-in-bio space, Koji and Bento. Linktree declined to comment about what it plans to do with both platforms.

But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. In June 2023, Linktree laid off 27% of its workforce, seeing many employees in Australia and New Zealand let go from the company. In a memo to staff, Zaccaria said the layoffs would help Linktree shift its focus to furthering growth in the U.S., the company’s largest market. The layoffs followed a round of cuts in 2022, which saw 17% of staff let go.

Linktree has raised more than $165 million in funding to date and is valued at more than $1 billion.

The Future of the AEC Industry: Exploring BIM Modeling Trends for Companies

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is now an indispensable tool for more and more building projects in today’s quickly evolving architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. However, what does the future hold for this field? What trends should you watch out for?

BIM modeling services are changing the AEC industry in ways you may not know. From enhanced efficiency to improved collaboration, there’s no denying how beneficial BIM is. This article explores the emerging BIM modeling trends for companies.

BIM modeling adoption

What’s the effect of BIM modeling adoption on manufacturers? BIM is critical as more and more companies, governmental entities, and private clients recognize its value. Architects, engineers, and interior designers have started to adapt their practices to integrate BIM technology into their work.

The professionals turn to BIM objects that manufacturers, EPDs, and LCAs provide for accurately assessing their designs and environmental impact. BIM adoption is vital for manufacturers to stay competitive and adhere to the increasing demand for BIM objects in construction projects.

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Integrating AI with all its promising benefits is starting to change the construction industry. Manufacturers are among the main stakeholders that this trend will affect sooner or later. With the help of AI algorithms, it will be easier for manufacturers to analyze all project data, acquire insights into their products’ performance, and reach data-driven decisions for their improvement.

AEC1

When used in the construction industry, AI can help monitor performance and detect problems before they occur. This also improves quality control and can come in handy for analyzing vast quantities of data and determining patterns that will further optimize the design and construction process.

For example, artificial intelligence can be used to examine data that can help predict possible delays in the schedules of construction projects. Tools powered by AI, like chatbots, can also be a great help for customers as well as other stakeholders. These tools can answer questions that can improve the overall satisfaction of customers and reduce the workload on the part of the customer support teams. If you still find these lacking, AI is also great at analyzing data on building components and materials to pinpoint areas with room for sustainability, efficiency, and cost improvement.

Automation

Automation is also an emerging trend expected to transform the BIM world. Construction automation uses applications, robots, and digital processes to achieve and complete tasks with the least human input. Automation has numerous perks, including being more cost-effective and reducing safety hazards.

Automating the BIM model production process allows manufacturers to collaborate more effectively with engineers, architects, and other stakeholders involved in the construction process. The use of automation in BIM helps the manufacturing process as well. Automation technologies like sensors, AI, and robotics enable manufacturers to improve the quality of their products and streamline the production process. These can lead to better adaptability and flexibility in changing the requirements for production. It allows manufacturers to better cater to the demands of the construction professionals who use BIM.

RELATED: Industry Rates for BIM Services & Building Information Modeling Costs

BIM mandates

It’s a big no-no for manufacturers to fail to adhere to BIM mandates now more than ever. BIM mandates are a requirement instead of a mere option in the construction industry because of their numerous benefits, including increased efficiency and better project outcomes. Technological advancements aren’t the only ones that drive the trend; even politicians strive to improve a country’s competitiveness, productivity, and environmental and social welfare.

Manufacturers can enjoy a strategic edge by adhering to BIM mandates and coming up with BIM content to enhance their product offers and better meet the needs of their customers. Manufacturers must keep up with the newest BIM requirements to stay competitive.

Cloud-based technology

Numerous benefits are associated with cloud-based BIM, such as real-time updates, accessibility, and improved collaboration. Information management is a vital benefit where BIM objects play a significant role. Thanks to this technology, building project stakeholders can update and access BIM models worldwide to collaborate on projects.

AEC2 (1)

Manufacturers can make the most of this trend by ensuring their products are accessible on cloud-based BIM platforms. As a result, it will be easier for stakeholders to have their products integrated into BIM models. Real-time updates are also available on cloud-based BIM to help teams keep up with progress and project changes.

On the other hand, using onsite premises may require stakeholders to work with obsolete information or wait for updates, leading to errors and delays. With cloud-based BIM, stakeholders can access the most updated information about the project and engage in real-time collaboration. This trend will likely continue as cloud-based technology infiltrates other industries. As an increasing number of stakeholders welcome the idea of using cloud-based BIM, it’s expected that accessibility and collaboration will further improve, thus transforming the construction industry as a whole.

Prefabrication

Prefabrication is an up-and-coming trend that might already be familiar among manufacturers. Prefabrication and BIM are similar to two peas in a single pod. The prefabrication process involves the offsite creation of building components and assembling them on the site.

During prefabrication, BIM has a critical role to play as it lets manufacturers develop digital models of the components that allow easy integration into the building model. Manufacturers can enjoy numerous benefits from using BIM during prefabrication. These include accuracy, increased efficiency, and better collaboration with the rest of the stakeholders.

All of these allow quicker and more efficient onsite assembly of the components. Combining BIM with prefabrication will enable manufacturers to seamlessly develop components fitting into the building model.

Internet of Things (IoT)

Greener, faster, and better building processes are what BIM is all about. Stakeholders can take advantage of sensors and IoT to gain insight into the operation of their building projects. The construction industry can use IoT to control and monitor building systems and automate repair and maintenance tasks for improved safety at work.

Integrating IoT data with BIM software can give construction professionals more detailed and accurate information on the building systems’ performance, including lighting, product design, and other equipment. Manufacturing services can also use IoT to understand the needs of end-users and construction professionals to develop improved products that cater to their customers’ competitive needs.

Digital twins

AEC3

As digital twins continue rising in popularity, the construction industry is also set to enter a new dimension of simulation and design. Digital twins can be likened to replicas of physical assets like machinery or buildings, which help stakeholders view and assess the performance of their structures in various scenarios. Digital twins can provide real-time data that optimize performance, improve decision-making, and anticipate maintenance needs before they happen.

Digital twins can accurately predict and simulate the behavior and operation of a product according to conditions in the real world. It allows manufacturers to come up with educated decisions regarding support and maintenance needs that optimize the performance of a product. This reduces rework and waste, hastens the design process, and enhances the product’s overall quality. The identification of possible bottlenecks before they happen is among its significant benefits.

Virtual Augmented Reality

The rise of augmented reality technologies significantly impacts BIM processes. These are starting to be further integrated into the construction industry to provide various means of interacting and visualizing BIM data. The technologies allow picturing and simulating construction projects so stakeholders can understand them before construction.

Virtual augmented reality is a technology that will enable easier and faster inspection of large-scale 3D models to offer stakeholders a clear and comprehensive image of the development and design process. The technology is also expected to improve the BIM modeling process in the future by providing a comprehensive look at the different stages of the design process.

It’s an impressive way of presenting designs and products to customers to give them a chance to understand better what they will get before deciding to buy. Virtual augmented reality also allows visualization of product designs and improved collaboration among project teams. This cuts down errors and enhances the overall quality of the project through the identification and resolution of problems before the start of construction.

Possibilities are almost infinite as far as the future of BIM modeling for AEC companies is concerned. Cad Crowd operates as a platform where you can find BIM modeling & design services and architectural BIM modeling experts who can help your company keep up with the changes taking place in the industry.

PepsiCo’s competitive strategy turned into KPIs

In 2016, PepsiCo launched their 2025 Sustainability Agenda, a detailed overview of PepsiCo’s business model that was to focus on “products, planet and people”. PepsiCo supported each of the strategic goals with KPIs and defined targets for them. Recently, the company published their Q2 2017 results, at which we will look from the perspective of BI consulting.

PepsiCo's strategy translated into KPIs

PepsiCo’s KPIs to build the portfolio of healthier products

We’ll focus on one of the pillars of 2025 Sustainability Agenda – PepsiCo’s healthier product portfolio. Here is how this strategic initiative is expressed in KPIs and relevant goals that the company aims to reach by 2025:

Target KPI Goal
Reduce added sugar Share of Pepsi’s global beverage portfolio volume that has 100 calories or fewer from added sugars per 12-oz. serving 2/3
Reduce saturated fat Share of Pepsi’s global portfolio volume that does not exceed 1.1 grams of saturated fat per 100 calories 3/4
Reduce salt Share of Pepsi’s global foods portfolio volume that does not exceed 1.3 milligrams of sodium per calorie 3/4

These KPIs are specific, measurable, relevant and time-bound. In other words, they are in line with the well-known SMART approach. However, will these KPIs contribute to the company’s success?

Can PepsiCo boast of its success?

If at first PepsiCo’s decision to differentiate and to offer healthier products might have cast some doubts upon sceptics, the doubts should have lessened after PepsiCo published their Q1 2017 results. Recently, the company announced the Q2 2017 results showing organic revenue growth of 3.1%.

Can now business intelligence consulting practitioners add PepsiCo to the list of best practice examples of how to successfully translate a corporate strategy into KPIs? So far, it seems too early for that. Pepsi’s efforts to make their product portfolio healthier are evident: the company divided their brands into good-for-you and fun-for-you categories, as well as adopted the practice of indicating product content clearly on packaging. Still, it’s difficult to say how much PepsiCo progressed in achieving their KPIs.

Undoubtedly, PepsiCo oversees how they advanced in KPIs. What’s more, the company signed an agreement with Partnership for a Healthier America to monitor their progress against previously outlined goals. However, the results have not been published yet.

So far, we can suppose that good financial results and the progress in KPIs are interrelated, as in April 2017, the company reported that more than 45% of PepsiCo’s revenue had come from its “guilt-free” beverage and snack division. “Guilt-free”, a term that refers to PepsiCo’s product portfolio, means beverages with fewer than 70 calories per 12 oz. and snacks with lower amounts of salt and saturated fat.

To sum it up
