If you were expecting a brand-new Samsung smartwatch with a clicky, physical rotating bezel this year, you’re out of luck. A new leak suggests Samsung is scrapping the rumored Galaxy Watch 9 Classic and is instead focusing its efforts on a revamped Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.

The latest rumor from tipster GalaxyTechie on X suggests your dreams of a 2026 Classic model with a mechanical ring are officially on ice, but you might get a more premium Ultra model with thinner bezels to make up for it (via 9to5Google). That’s a setback for early regulatory chatter and FCC docs that had fans hoping for a big dual-release this year.



Toyota Is Being Sued For Allegedly Stealing the Recipe For African E-Trikes



Sometimes you read an allegation of a deed so harsh, but simultaneously so low-reward, that it’s almost impossible to take it at face value. That’s the situation with a lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California last month. If you take the law firm Brithem LLP at its word, a nonprofit established by Toyota called the Toyota Mobility Foundation (TMF), which is run by Toyota’s executives, allegedly stole secrets from a Mauritius-based, Zimbabwe-operated electric trike company, and handed them over to a company elsewhere on the continent of Africa so that company could turn a profit while Toyota (allegedly) burnished its do-gooder image.

According to the New York Times, the plaintiff, Mobility for Africa, is the creator of an e-trike called a Hamba, a slow-moving, three-wheeled trike with a 60-mile range, ideal for transporting agricultural goods along dirt roads from homes to marketplaces. The company is led by South Africa-based Shantha Bloemen.

Bloeman told the Times her company has a mere 300 Hambas. Mobility for Africa provides charging infrastructure, and leases out the trikes—ideally to women, apparently. A Hamba has a pickup truck-style bed “that can carry 400 kilograms (about 880 pounds) of cargo and a bench seat designed for women wearing skirts.”

The TMF took an interest, according to the Times, and “created a pilot program in Kenya that used Mobility for Africa’s model and described the program as a partnership with Ms. Bloemen’s organization, according to the suit.”

But Bloeman now claims that the TMF also secretly provided Los Angeles-based Exa Innovation Studio with the intellectual property behind Hambas, allegedly allowing it to form another company in Kenya: Songa Mobility, which, sure enough, makes e-trikes with bench seats and pickup truck-style beds.

 

The Times quotes the suit as saying, “The commercialized Songa Mobility solution is virtually identical to the program [Mobility for Africa] developed and shared [with Exa].”

The Times says according to the text of the suit, Mobility for Africa had a contract with TMF specifically holding onto its intellectual property, and disallowing Toyota from sharing it with other entities. It also says the TMF’s actions have allegedly made it hard for Mobility for Africa to fundraise and make good on its plans to expand beyond Zimbabwe.

It should be noted that all of these e-trikes are—visually at least—similar to inexpensive vehicles that are widely available from suppliers in China.

The Toyota Mobility Foundation told the New York Times it was “aware of this matter and is investigating,” and declined further requests for comment.

NASA Is Testing A Rover That Can Drive Faster And Lift Its Wheels To Climb Obstacles



NASA’s Mars rovers have accomplished a whole lot since the first one landed on the red planet in the late ’90s, but even the latest members of the fleet still have plenty of limitations. For one, they’re very slow; Perseverance, which NASA considers a “standout,” achieves a top speed of just under .1 mph on flat ground. On top of that, the rough terrain is hard on the rovers’ wheels, and steep slopes with hazards like rocks and sand pose a real challenge, sometimes requiring long detours to reach certain targets. But this week, NASA showed off its progress on a prototype that boasts more advanced capabilities: the Exploration Rover for Navigating Extreme Sloped Terrain, or Ernest.

The space agency has been testing Ernest in the Colorado Desert, exploring new approaches that could be used for future missions on Mars and the moon. Ernest has four wheels, in contrast to the current Mars’ rovers’ six, and is four feet long, though a version that would be used for an actual mission would be double the size. And, it can individually lift its wheels to step on or over obstacles. In the recent tests in the desert, the prototype drove for a total of over 37 hours across seven days, covering roughly 16 miles, according to NASA. It hit a top speed of about .6 mph.

“You could do a science road trip across the Moon — or Mars — with this vehicle,” said James Keane, a JPL planetary scientist working on lunar missions. Going back to NASA’s Sojourner rover, the Mars rovers have relied on a passive suspension system, the rocker-bogie system, to keep the weight constant across their wheels. Now, though, engineers are trying out active suspension with Ernest to achieve greater mobility. “Two powered joints in front articulate a gimbal that allows the rover to drive using different gaits like squirming, wheel-walking, and obstacle-climbing,” NASA says.

It can switch between active and passive suspension depending on the task and energy needs, and thanks to its four steerable wheels, it can drive in any direction. There have already been multiple iterations of the Ernest prototype since the program began in 2022, and the team has tested nearly a dozen active suspension configurations. The latest version also has “enhanced independent decision-making capabilities.” The goal with Ernest is to develop the technology for rovers that can cover more ground than those that came before them, and faster, with less reliance on human controllers back on Earth.

Ghost at Dawn is about Fear, Empathy, and Questionable Choices


The ESRB rating for this game reads like a rap sheet. You would be forgiven for thinking this is another over-the-top, gory, exploitation horror game – because you’d be right. But you’d also be glossing over the fact that Ghost at Dawn is, at its very core, a game about empathy.

The central location of the game, The Pines Hotel, has all the trappings of a film noir setting – the seedy hotel littered with corpses, the dames to kill and die for – but the reason our reluctant detective subjects himself to the nightmare within these walls is that Emi Kosuke is missing, and nobody but her sister seems to give a shit.

It’s 1947, and private eye Ben O’Hara would rather be at the bar than digging around an abandoned hotel with a couple dozen too many stiffs in it. He’s got his own problems. The docs tell him he has something called “shellshock”. He ain’t been the same since coming home from Germany, and even though a little whisky or a quick smoke usually sets him right, he’s a little in over his head on this one. He’s used to tracking down cheating spouses and deadbeats. This is a job for the coppers.

Except the coppers don’t care. You see, Emi is Japanese, and her papers aren’t exactly in order, if you catch my meaning. And the other gumshoes in town? You think they care if there’s one less Japanese girl in Seattle? Let me tell you, my friend, they do not.

And that’s where Ben O’Hara comes in. Because “Ben O’Hara” ain’t his real name. It’s Benjiro Ohara. And as far as Emi’s sister, Yuhiko, can tell, Ben’s the only Japanese American private detective in the city.

But here’s the thing. Ben can leave the hotel whenever he wants. Or I should say you can decide when he leaves. In fact, that’s the only way to end the game. You decide when you’ve seen enough. You’ll see an ending cutscene based on the clues you’ve found during your investigation.

Ghost at Dawn pays homage to the Survival Horror classics that inspired it but also takes that formula and twists and turns it in unexpected ways. The ending mechanic is one example. Another is the permadeath system.

Ben only has a limited number of lives before the game erases your save, and you’ll have to start your investigation over. So maybe you’ll want to check out of the hotel before it’s too late.

Or maybe you push through. Because you know if you don’t find her – no one will.

Signal’s Meredith Whittaker wants you to remember that AI chatbots ‘are not your friends’


Asked about the privacy implications of chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude, Signal President Meredith Whittaker answered, “These are not your friends. These are not conscious beings. These are not sentient interlocutors.”

Whittaker made those comments in a broader interview with Bloomberg about policy, privacy, and Signal. She acknowledged that she uses AI tools “to format a document here and there,” but insisted, “I don’t ask them questions. I’m very serious about my thinking and writing, and I don’t want the process of working through an idea […] to be foreclosed or eclipsed by the response of a system that’s averaging what’s already out there.”

As for Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman’s prediction that users could let Microsoft Copilot handle all their Christmas shopping this year, Whittaker argued this scenario — where Copilot is eavesdropping on the family group chat to determine who wants want — means giving it “access to my credit card, my browser, my Signal, the ability to message my siblings on my behalf, my home address [and] my calendar.”

“What you’ve just described is a system with very pervasive access across multiple applications and services,” Whittaker said. “In the context of Signal, it would constitute a kind of a backdoor.”
