Top 5 Prototyping Mistakes to Avoid in Product Development (And How to Fix Them)

What are the top prototyping mistakes to avoid in product development? For every business that focuses on creating a product, prototype design services are an essential step that leads to the final product. It allows testing concepts, ideas, and other factors to make it feasible without having to spend a lot of money, resources, and time. But sometimes, it can be overwhelming as the final product does not always align with our vision. To make it all worthwhile, the concepts must be transformed into something significant and useful for the competitive marketplace.

In order to have a feasible product, all startups must undergo product testing, prototyping, and experimentation. However, not deeply knowing prototyping can be your business downfall. In this blog, you will be able to explore the top 5 prototyping mistakes as well as the solutions for them.

What is a prototype?

A prototype is a version of a test product that has been produced for observation purposes. Prototypes help you simulate real scenarios and settings to gain better insight and to check if it is ready for mass production or if some parts still need to be improved for the market. A prototype does not have to be perfect, as it serves as a basis for identifying items that are not appropriate for the process. Prototypes are typically only preliminary versions of the finished product. It is a kind of trial and error where one learns; it is not utilized for marketing. These prototypes are usually basic and crude. As previously mentioned, it is simple because it is not flawless.

Why is Prototyping Important?

Prototyping is an important step as it focuses on improving the product for mass production. All of the required parts and components must be in optimal condition in order to avoid manufacturing delays and costly damage that might hinder progress before the market launch. Rapid prototyping firms also allow you to have a better perspective to identify faulty and defective parts and features that will give you plenty of time to reflect and iterate on your product. As the development progresses, you can refine more and explore your prototype and upgrade it to its optimal use.

With prototyping, you also have the chance to examine every raw material to make sure it is appropriate for what you intend to produce. You must always remember that your raw materials can withstand extreme conditions, such as heat, cold, pressure, or force. Aside from having your own feedback on the prototype, your product design team or any market survey can provide feedback for you, as they will be the ones who will be using your product. This is a kind of fresh point of view that may help you identify weaknesses in the product aside from what you see.

You can also utilize the feedback to improve and expand upon something that any consumer or target user would want. It would be extremely difficult to accomplish all of the objectives without prototyping, as there would be no foundation for improving what is being built. It will result in a confused state where the product does not belong and is inappropriate for its materials and purposes. Despite the efforts, time, and money that were put into it, the result will be ineffective.

Types of prototype:

  • Low fidelity prototype – The simplest of all prototypes. It usually consists of traditional sketching, paper drawings, and cardboard. Anything that can be used for sketching. It is the least expensive one because you are just utilizing what you already have. You are not just sketching, you are also exploring your idea.
  • Mid fidelity prototype – Mid Fidelity Prototype involves the use of digital tools such as 3D printing services to have an improved and functional model for a client to see. It can have in-depth details that can serve as an overview of how a product will function. High Fidelity
  • Prototype – This is the most detailed and realistic version among the three prototypes. It looks like the replication of the product based on its design, appearance, and its function.

Here are some common prototyping mistakes in product development and tips on how you can fix them:

1. Trying to make the prototype perfect too early

Prototyping can be a process that needs time to make it perfect, and some clients would want to have a perfect prototype in just one trial. The problem with this is that there needs to be a trial to actually visualize the materials used, functionality, features, and others.

How is this a problem?

Although anyone would want to not waste a lot of money in a trial-and-error phase in new product design services, prototyping is not something that you can build in an instant. Prototyping is a phase for improvement, testing what ideas and concepts align with the goal of the product. When you only focus on making the prototype perfect rather than identifying what needs to be improved, you are wasting your own time and resources, and hindering the development process to have a unique product suitable for your target market.

How to fix it?

Begin and create a prototype that is not expensive. A low-fidelity prototype is suitable for starters since it serves as the first physical version of your product. Paper, foam, clay, simple 3D printing design, bottles, and even cardboard may be used for this. To create a low-quality prototype, try not to spend too much on expensive materials and just utilize materials that you already have. After this, you can focus on the validation of the concept if it is attainable, practical, and functional. Once done, at a later stage, you can refine and build more on what can still be done to have a working product.

2. Ignoring user feedbacks

Feedback is a helpful way to gather opinions about your products and help you improve them. Owners should be taking advantage of the feedback given, whether it’s good or bad, to see what the things are that need to be focused on.

How is this a problem?

Sometimes, owners can be too confident that their ideas will work out perfectly. When it comes to product concept design services, they tend to forget market research and target customers based on what they want, and gather feedback. The presence of feedback is a helpful way of making it improve, yet when this is not considered, you are risking every chance of creating a product that is impractical and does not have any use.

How to fix it?

The prototype must be tested by the target or potential users, or even on people who can provide detailed and proper feedback without any bias. Test this as early as you make your prototype to know what things should be done on it. As you conduct interviews, don’t forget to ask them questions related to the prototype they used in terms of functionality, relevance, and what other factors they think must be improved. Using this as a foundation for your prototype can lead you to a product that will last not just in the market but also in the trend.

RELATED: Designing Prototypes: 3D Design Services for Inventors and Companies

Analyze every feedback and always remember that opinions can be given in a good or bad way, which any owner or client must take as constructive feedback. Constructive criticism must be handled carefully because this is where the improvements start. Target sales are attained when taking into consideration what motivates clients to buy and refer your product to others. When a customer feels heard, they are more likely to be satisfied with the way you handle the problem, and they will keep buying and have faith in the goods you are producing.

3. Skipping iteration

As the word of mouth gets around quickly, as a prototype manufacturing designer, be careful in making improvements and fixing any errors. If an individual has already tried your product and was not satisfied with it, they might not promote your product, therefore making the iteration useless and pointless. This can be an inefficient and costly expenditure on your part.

How is this a problem?

Nothing is perfect in just one try. Skipping this part of the iteration phase means you are missing the opportunity to create an efficient prototype. Iteration is a state where you repeat the process, improve it to make it effective in the final phase. The chances of having to find out what the functional components are or those unnecessary features might be forgotten when iteration is being disregarded.

How to fix it?

Make sure to learn and adapt the process of iteration where you build a prototype, test it, gather feedback from the users, and improve it based on the feedback, and then repeat the process until you make it a perfect one.  In each cycle, the product gets better, more accurate, and more reliable, leading to the product’s success. It comes from continuous improvement and not just a one-step process to perfection. Do not rush the time, what is a product done quickly when it is not up to the standards and gives a low quality. It can just be another waste of resources. Make sure that all of the components and parts are suitable with each other, it should be functioning and can be an aid to those who are the target market of the product.

4. Using the wrong type of prototype

How is this a problem?

When you choose a prototype that does not align with what you want to create and does not match your aim, it can affect the product development process, which causes a delay. In addition, it wastes time and resources that can be used for other things. It should be taken into mind that as the stages develop, it also needs a different prototype.

How to fix it?

Create a prototype that is identical to your desired outcome. You can then have a workable prototype because designs are already stable. Product rendering experts must choose the right prototype that is based on what you want to aim for, as well as your objective. Make a preliminary sample of the materials you intend to utilize for the product that are sufficiently robust. Additionally, utilize a structure that is already of high quality.

5. Not considering real-world constraints

Think about the cost, resources, and materials that are involved in the creation of the prototype. Sometimes, owners or clients tend to be ambitious about their idea, which can be complex and impractical. The expenses that may be required should also be taken into account. The cost of production per unit, packaging, and design should all be considered. Every element you will require, including materials, packaging, and logistics, has to be listed.

Determining the product’s total cost may be aided by listing it from beginning to end. Adhering to the budget isn’t always a smart idea. Although preparation is essential, it is better to account for the potential for unanticipated costs. When you know and confirm the price of your items, you are making money and not losing it.

How is this a problem?

The clients would want to have a high-quality product that is already optimal. They would just want to see the visuals, its aesthetics, without thinking about the factors that are involved in such materials. It is important to have a prototype that is not just aesthetically pleasing but also practical. When creating it, it must not be an impulsive decision.

How to fix it?

From the beginning of conceptualization, consider the factors such as production costs, the materials and their availability, the manufacturing processes, as well as the durability and usability of the prototype. By having the chance to work with product modeling experts, such professionals can minimize errors as well as they can make a product that is more developed, which guarantees that the idea can be achieved in real life.

Having a successful product is not just about making it look like a perfect one that can be used in an instant, yet it must be feasible and practical in order to mitigate all of the risks that can happen along the development process. Prototyping is not just about building, it comes with the learning experience, exploration of the one you are creating, which can lead to a product that is already improved and is maximized to its potential. All of the mistakes, errors, and risks are just part of the whole process, as they say, you are not building and creating a product when you have not undergone the process of failure.

Mistakes are a part of the development process, but this can be minimized and avoided, allowing you to have a significant and a big chance of success. When done correctly, prototyping acts as a tool that anyone would want to have and be part of their process, as the chances of succeeding are at their best. Prototyping is a crucial step since it provides a basis for understanding and improving what you already have. Every single version tells a story and motivates you to do more since you are learning every step of it. Make it with care, take your time, test it as necessary, and never stop honing it. There is no need to rush, as it takes time to create a successful product in this competitive market.

Microsoft’s Layoffs Extend Beyond Xbox

Microsoft is cutting 3,200 jobs in divisions outside of Xbox today, mostly targeting the organization’s Commercial Business segment. The layoffs come in addition to a large but expected firing spree that also hit Microsoft’s Xbox arm on Monday, July 6.

Microsoft EVP and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman announced the Commercial Business layoffs in a blog post reading, “During my time at Microsoft, I’ve seen this company reinvent itself again and again. What makes that possible has always been our people — their resilience, creativity, and willingness to keep learning.”

Microsoft is firing 4,800 people across Xbox and other divisions today, equating to 2.1 percent of its global workforce. While Coleman made it clear that AI will not immediately replace the eliminated employees’ jobs, she hinted that this could and probably would happen in the near future.

“I also want to be direct that the roles eliminated today are not being replaced by AI,” Coleman wrote, apropos of nothing. “At the same time, what is true is that AI is changing how work gets done. Some of the tasks we do every day can now be automated, and that means we all need to keep learning, keep building new skills, and keep adapting as the work evolves.”

We knew the Xbox layoffs and studio sales were coming, but the additional loss of 3,200 non-gaming employees landed as a surprise on Monday.

In the case of Xbox, Microsoft laid off 1,600 employees today and is preparing for a further 1,600 firings in the coming months. Additionally, it’s spinning off four studios — Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Ninja Theory and Undead Labs — and potentially shuttering a fifth, Arkane.

Xbox employees have been bracing for layoffs since an ominous memo sent out by new CEO Asha Sharma and COO Matt Booty on June 10. They wrote that after a decade of massive studio acquisitions and poor current-gen hardware sales, the Xbox division was over-extended and losing money. Sharma reiterated these sentiments with more force in a blog post formally announcing the Xbox layoffs on July 6.

One week before the job cuts, Xbox union members under Communications Workers of America urged Microsoft to engage in good-faith negotiations around job security and layoff processes. Microsoft fired 9,000 people across its divisions in July 2025, including hundreds of Xbox employees, and it laid off 1,900 Xbox employees in early 2024.

Bentley’s first-ever fully electric SUV will be called Torcal

Bentley has officially named its first-ever fully electric vehicle Torcal, marking one of the biggest milestones in the British marque’s 107-year history. The luxury SUV will make its global debut on September 23, becoming Bentley’s fourth model line alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur, and Bentayga.

The announcement comes at a challenging time for premium electric vehicles. Luxury automakers that once rushed into electrification – including Porsche, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, and even Ferrari and Lamborghini – have slowed EV plans or doubled down on hybrids as demand has softened in key markets. Bentley itself postponed its goal of becoming an all-electric brand from 2030 to 2035, choosing a more gradual transition.

The Torcal could define Bentley’s electric future

The Torcal takes its name from El Torcal de Antequera, a limestone landscape in southern Spain. Bentley says the name also derives from the Latin word torquere (“to twist”), referencing torque and the effortless performance that has defined the brand for more than a century.

Bentley Chairman and CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser described the Torcal as “the most considered car in our history,” saying it raises the bar for craftsmanship, comfort, and performance. While Bentley has yet to reveal full specifications, the company has confirmed the Torcal will be a Luxury Urban SUV measuring less than five metres long. According to reports from Car and Driver and Road & Track, it will ride on Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture, shared with the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric and Audi A6 e-tron.

Bentley has previously revealed that the SUV will support ultra-fast charging, adding approximately 160km of range in seven minutes, and is expected to offer more than 300 miles (around 480km) of driving range. Spy images also point to an enclosed illuminated grille, crystal-inspired LED lighting, and a redesigned digital cabin featuring a curved portrait-oriented touchscreen.

Bentley’s first EV arrives during a difficult moment for luxury electric cars

Bentley is entering the EV market at one of the toughest moments the luxury segment has faced. Over the past two years, demand for premium electric cars has weakened, forcing several high-end brands to rethink their strategies. Lamborghini delayed its Lanzador EV after saying customer demand had “gone almost to zero,” while Ferrari pushed back its second EV. Audi discontinued the Q8 e-tron after citing falling demand in the luxury EV segment, and Porsche has taken a multibillion-euro writedown as it scaled back its electrification plans. Bentley itself postponed its all-electric target from 2030 to 2035, highlighting how even established luxury brands are taking a more cautious approach.

That challenge won’t be easy. Luxury EV demand has cooled across Europe, the US, and China as affluent buyers increasingly favour plug-in hybrids over fully electric models. Several premium manufacturers have revised their electrification timelines, highlighting that the transition may take longer than originally anticipated.

Bentley appears to be responding with a measured strategy. Instead of chasing volume, the company is positioning the Torcal as a luxury-first product that happens to be electric. The shared PPE platform provides proven technology, while Bentley’s focus remains on bespoke craftsmanship, performance, and exclusivity.

More details about the Torcal will be revealed over the coming weeks ahead of its September 23 global debut. Whether it can revive enthusiasm for high-end electric SUVs remains uncertain, but the model will serve as Bentley’s clearest indication yet of how it plans to navigate the industry’s shift toward electrification.

Canadian spy agency says it hacked drug traffickers, extremists and a ransomware gang last year

Offering a rare glimpse at the priorities of a top spy organization, Canada’s Communications Security Establishment said it conducted a handful of state-authorized hacks last year in order to disrupt the operations of drug traffickers, violent extremists, and a ransomware gang.

The disclosures in the Canadian intelligence agency’s annual report underscore some of the main national security threats that face Canada and its closest allies: ranging from the import of illegal drugs to cyberattacks. The spy agency, CSE, is tasked with collecting foreign intelligence, defending government systems, and disrupting online adversaries.

Published last week, the report says the CSE last year carried out three foreign “active cyber operations” — the term agency uses to describe its cyberattacks on overseas operations that threaten Canadian national security and public safety.

One of the operations, per the report, targeted cybercriminals outside of Canada who were brokering the sale of chemicals used to create the synthetic opioid, fentanyl. The CSE collected intelligence on the brokers, then conducted an operation that “disrupted and diminished their ability to operate,” the report said.

Another active operation involved the collection of signals intelligence — data produced from electronics and internet-connected devices — on an overseas extremist group that was spreading violent ideology and recruiting members, including in Canada.

The report said the agency analyzed the group’s organization, reach, and potential vulnerabilities to conduct an operation that “successfully undermined the group’s credibility and limited their ability to radicalize and recruit new members.”

Another operation involved disrupting a ransomware-as-a-service operation that let hackers rent access to a ransomware gang’s infrastructure to launch destructive extortion attacks. The CSE said its signals intelligence unit identified how the gang worked against the healthcare, transportation, and business sectors in Canada, then used an active cyber operation that “rendered the group’s infrastructure inoperable.” The operation also deleted much of the data on the gang’s servers.

The agency said it undertook concurrent “technical disruptions” against 10 of the most significant ransomware gangs targeting Canada to “make parts of their infrastructure unusable.”

The report did not say where the hackers, extremists or the ransomware gang were located, or the specifics of the operations that the CSE used to target them. It’s not uncommon for spy agencies to conduct cyberattacks against their adversaries, but such operations are seldom disclosed or detailed to protect the methods and techniques used.

Fort Meade, Maryland-based Cyber Command, which conducts cyber operations for the U.S. government, regularly carries out “hunt forward” operations that involve sending cyber teams to allied nations to secure their networks and disrupt cyber operations launched by adversaries. The number of U.S.-led hunt forward operations have risen from a few handful during 2018 to more than two dozen during 2025.

Canada’s CSE said it also carried out one defensive cyber operation during the year to target a phishing campaign aimed at Canadian federal government institutions and other important systems. The agency said it disrupted the group’s infrastructure and “degraded their ability” to target Canadians.

Some days I fondly recall Warhammer 40k’s first Inquisitor was called ‘Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau’ and he’s still too powerful to be retconned.

I think we can all agree, Warhammer 40k’s Inquisitors are cool customers. Once you put aside their whole shtick of being able to commit genocide on a whim, exterminatus-ing planets that have fallen to the predations of Chaos, they’re basically Witch Hunters hanging out in a moody and noir-ish sci-fi future. There’s a reason folks are excited for Dark Heresy.

They get to wear fun hats, run around with inquisitorial warbands filled with strange characters and xenos, and they get cool names like Ravenor, Eisenhorn, Adrastia, and Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau. Wait, what was that last one? Oh, you aren’t familiar with the work of Obiwan Sherlock Clousseau.

He’s well known across the stars for solving uncrackable cases with his astute deductions, fighting xenos with a legally distinct laser sword, and just generally bringing balance to the For- I mean Imperium. In fact, he was the very first Inquisitor depicted in Warhammer 40k, introduced in the original Rogue Trader back in 1987 and illustrated by Martin McKenna. You can see this model of Imperial virtue below.

I’m not sure why, but gazing into his eyes I feel like he’s saying “You best start believing in daemon stories. You’re in one!” And if you’re thinking this image gives off some serious Fighting Fantasy vibes, McKenna did also contribute illustrations to those books. The entry in Rogue Trader reads:

House of the Dragon stars explain why their season 3 reunion is so nerve-wracking to watch

At the end of season 2 of House of the Dragon, Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) cut a deal with her childhood best friend-turned-political rival Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) that would allow Rhaenyra to take over King’s Landing but protect Alicent’s children. The bargain quickly went wrong as King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney) secretly fled the city. Alicent and her daughter Helaena were caught trying to do the same. House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3 deals with the fallout from the failed escape, as Alicent finds herself a prisoner in her old palace and tries to figure out how to work with Rhaenyra to protect her family and the Seven Kingdoms.

“They’re sort of at opposite ends of a seesaw or scales,” Cooke told Polygon in a virtual interview. “Both of them can’t have power at the same time. But I think when Rhaenyra sneezes, Alicent catches a cold. No matter where they are, they can’t help but feel the ripple effects of each other’s actions and also recognize and see what each other are going through because they’ve been in these positions themselves.”

Alicent helped rule Westeros when her husband Viserys’ health declined, and Rhaenyra gets a taste of just how hard that was during this episode as she has to grapple with food and candle shortages and a rat infestation. The burden of leadership is especially heavy given Rhaenyra is still reeling from the death of her son Jace in the Battle of the Gullet.

“Her journey to the throne comes so in the shadow of her son’s death that I feel like she’s sort of acting on his behalf,” D’Arcy said. “This is a political family whose personal relationships are so fundamentally enmeshed with this political ambition. If Rhaenyra’s name enters the history books, her son gains a kind of immortality.”

Unable to execute Aegon, Rhaenyra kills Alicent’s father Otto Hightower, who had conspired to rob her of her inheritance and put Aegon on the Iron Throne. Episode 2 ended with Alicent seeing his decapitated body, a moment Cooke says inspires “white-hot anger” in her character.

“Alicent doesn’t know if Otto has been Rhaenyra’s prisoner this whole time, and this is the first thing that she’s done as the ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, this big showy political act,” Cooke said. “She doesn’t know if the bargain she’s made with Rhaenyra has been fulfilled on her side either. Has she just been another pawn in someone else’s game? I think she’s just like, OK, well fuck you. It’s on.”

Despite that feeling of betrayal, Alicent has to try to come to a new understanding as she and Helaena are locked away in the Red Keep.

“There’s an element of her love for Rhaenyra that is preserved from when they were girls and from their best friendship, but I think there’s too much water under the bridge and I think [their relationship] is beyond saving,” Cooke said. “They can never go back to who they were. They can never have a simple relationship again. It’s marred by betrayal and death and too much time having passed.”

House of the Dragon season 3 episode 3 airs at 9 p.m. ET Sunday, July 5 on HBO.

Is the Oura membership worth it? 5 reasons why I think it is

The new Oura Ring 5 is out, and its smaller profile is definitely turning heads among current Oura users and prospective ones, myself included. However, in addition to the $50 price increase over the Oura Ring 4, there’s another cost to consider: the Oura Membership.

The Oura Membership isn’t required to use the Oura Ring, but the companion app’s functionality will be quite limited without it. The $5.99 membership brings a host of features to the app and unlocks a bevy of capabilities that you wouldn’t otherwise get.
