First look: The Galaxy S26 FE just popped up with a real-world image

The Galaxy S26 FE has shown up on the Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) database, spotted by 9to5Google. There’s not a ton of information on this page, but it does reveal that the handset carries the model number SM-S741. It also offers the real-world image you see below this paragraph.

Based on this image, the Galaxy S26 FE will look very similar to its predecessor with one notable difference — the rear camera bump. It appears the FE will adopt the raised camera bump Samsung added to the Galaxy S26 series. Strangely, this camera sits far closer to the top and side than we’ve seen on either the Galaxy S26 or Galaxy Z Fold 7.

As there’s still a lot of missing information about this smartphone, it’s unknown when the Galaxy S26 FE will launch. We’re likely still several months out from its release, so don’t expect it any time soon. But that leaves plenty of time to learn more about it before it comes out.

OpenAI unveils Lockdown Mode to protect sensitive data from prompt injection attacks


OpenAI announced a new feature that it says will provide additional protection from prompt injection attacks, where malicious chatbot instructions are hidden in webpages and other content sources.

Among other things, Lockdown Mode will disable live web browsing (so you can only access cached content), the retrieval and display of images from the web (you can still generate images), deep research, and agent mode.

The company says that even with Lockdown Mode turned on, ChatGPT could still be vulnerable to prompt injections — which could, for example, “appear in cached web content or in an uploaded file, and could still affect the behavior or accuracy of a response.”

But the goal is to reduce the likelihood that sensitive data gets shared in the process.

“Lockdown Mode is not intended for everyone,” OpenAI says. “It is designed for people and organizations that handle sensitive data and want stricter protection from data exfiltration risks related to prompt injection.”

The company says it’s currently rolling Lockdown Mode out to self-serve ChatGPT Business accounts, as well as eligible personal accounts.

The AI vibe shift is real: Why the backlash is growing


You’ve heard of AI vibe coding, one dictionary’s phrase of the year for 2025. As of this week, 2026 is shaping up to be the year of the AI vibe shift.

You wouldn’t know the shift existed from the tech world’s top pronouncements of late; it is, after all, always sunny in Silicon Valley. Microsoft’s Build conference, like Google I/O in May, featured tons of techies talking about tokens, the metric by which AI prompts and answers are measured (a token, weirdly, is about three-quarters of a word on average).

Both conferences also centered claims about frontier AI that are dubious to say the least. DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis at Google I/O: “Artificial General Intelligence is just a few years away… we are standing in the foothills of the Singularity.” Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman: “scaling laws are holding… we are building towards what we call Humanist Superintelligence.”

Wall Street was still buying it, but investors were wavering. The ultimate AI bellwether, Nvidia stock, tumbled for a few days, rallied after CEO Jensen Huang insisted AI agents will run everything, everywhere in the future (presumably once they’ve stopped deleting databases), then got pummeled again on Friday.

Still, for now, Anthropic, OpenAI, and SpaceX continue to chase trillion-dollar IPOs, the latter based in large part on the untested concept of AI data centers in space.

Regardless, outside the AI bubble, a backlash has been brewing for some time — and not only among students booing pro-AI commencement speakers.

Just 10 percent of Americans say they’re thrilled about the future of AI, a Pew poll found in March; that same month, some 80 percent of registered U.S. voters in an NBC poll said neither Democrats nor Republicans are doing a good job on the AI front.

That number also appears in an April survey of white-collar workers: 80 percent are straight-up refusing to use AI even when it’s mandated. In the last 30 days, 54 percent of workers reported bypassing company AI tools and completing jobs themselves.

Those numbers suggest general strike-levels of discontent with AI across every industry, out there in the real America beyond Silicon Valley and Wall Street, if not an outright revolutionary mood.

Data center protests, fueled by the 70 percent of Americans who say they don’t want data centers near them, are only likely to grow going forward — especially now that they are producing tangible results.

At least 48 data center projects were blocked or delayed in 2025, according to Data Center Watch, and the fight is only getting more fierce. Take the planned Stratos data center in Utah, where local opposition just forced VC and Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary to downsize his land usage by 75 percent.

“We screwed up,” O’Leary told local TV news Friday. “We pissed off a lot of people.”

‘Let them eat tokens’

And the threat of electoral guillotines may explain why politicians are starting to propose serious action.

This week alone, Senator Bernie Sanders came out in favor of the U.S. public owning a 50 percent stake in AI companies, former presidential candidate Andrew Yang proposed an AI tax, and President Trump finally signed an executive order on AI regulation that his AI czar, Silicon Valley titan David Sacks, has long opposed.

On Friday, New York State legislators sent a one-year data center moratorium to the governor’s desk — and Trump seemed to come around to Sanders’ way of thinking on the government taking an ownership stake in OpenAI. Some who doubt OpenAI’s current worth saw it as a bailout.

The White House’s AI executive order was announced while Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella was making rosy pronouncements on AI at Build, adding to the surreal sense that we’re watching a tale of two worlds — the anti-AI people versus an out-of-touch AI regime that says, essentially, let them eat tokens.

But hold the revolution: Just below the surface (and the Microsoft Surface Ultra), the AI regime is showing signs of cracking all on its own — and it’s all down to those tokens.

Silicon Valley’s AI backlash begins

When it comes to AI true-believer companies, they don’t get much truer than Uber. The rideshare giant says 90 percent of its engineers use AI tools, mostly Anthropic’s Claude Code. As much as 10 percent of Uber’s codebase is written by AI agents.

Uber also had leaderboards that encouraged as much usage of AI tokens as possible; in Silicon Valley, this is known as tokenmaxxing, and it was really hot in 2025.

Then the tokenmaxxing bill came due. “The budget I thought I would need [for 2026] is blown away already,” CTO Neppalli Naga told The Information on April 14 — less than four months into the year.

At the time, however, the information didn’t make much of a dent in the AI news cycle — not until Uber’s COO confirmed what it meant at the end of May. Naga’s busted budget was a “head-exploding moment,” Andrew MacDonald told the Rapid Response podcast. Such spending “becomes harder to justify because AI is not free…we’re going to have to start talking about token consumption.”

Just like that, we started talking about token consumption. Axios reported an unnamed company had burned through half a billion dollars of tokens in a single month “after failing to put usage limits on Claude licenses.”

Next, we learned Amazon and Meta had shut down their own internal AI leaderboards; other companies like Walmart and Starbucks have scaled back their AI agent plans.

In a leaked email, one Amazon senior vice president told employees to “stop using AI just for the sake of using AI.” You’d be forgiven for thinking this obliterates a large chunk of OpenAI and Anthropic’s business model.

Both companies have spent years building models that, for the most part, consume more tokens. Now they’re promoting agents who can consume tokens on steroids — often as much as 24 times as a regular model.

As high-minded as their missions might be, both companies are in it to sell tokens.

Why tokenmaxxing died

Some AI leaders, sensing the shift in the wind, are starting to say that sort of thing openly. Ravi Kumar S., CEO of AI IT firm Cognizant, called tokenmaxxing “a vanity metric” at a Fortune conference on Monday. Kumar took aim at OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, accusing them of “fearmongering.”

Altman and Amodei have walked back previous predictions of an AI jobs apocalypse now that they have IPOs in the offing — reason enough for a vibe shift of its own. But what’s really hurting the two CEOs is that they’re also cashing in on user confusion over the complex cost of AI.

Earlier this year, Anthropic quietly changed the price of Claude for many customers, charging them per token. OpenAI is looking at dropping its “unlimited” ChatGPT plans — quite a change from a year ago, when Altman promised “intelligence too cheap to meter.”

The shift isn’t just happening at the two AI giants. Microsoft started cutting token costs for itself and raising token prices for everyone else — even before those rosy pronouncements at Build.

Microsoft began revoking developers’ access to Claude Code, pushing them to Microsoft Copilot instead, in May. On June 1, Github Copilot users were switched from a fixed subscription to a per-token subscription model.

Reddit filled with angry users noting how expensive their AI prompts have suddenly become. In one extreme case, a Claude user blew 50 percent of his monthly credits on a single prompt.

“At the beginning of the year,” Altman said in an OpenAI livestream this week, “people were totally happy with the amount they were spending… now, all of a sudden [it’s] a huge issue.” In a CNBC interview Monday, Altman admitted to a “ton of waste” in AI spending, and said companies were asking, “how long do I have to wait for [AI benefits] to show up in revenue?”

This was, Altman said, a “fair issue.” And the closest Altman came to an answer? “The industry will figure that out pretty quickly… in another year or two.”

Will the vibe shift burst the AI bubble?

How long OpenAI and Anthropic have to figure out this issue, however, depends largely on what happens in their IPOs.

“Nobody knows when this will all collapse, but 2026 will be remembered in hindsight as the year in which retail investors were left holding the bag,” Gary Marcus, a professor and leading generative AI critic, predicted Monday.

Marcus, who has been increasingly proven right in the AI problems he’s foreseen since 2022, may yet be off base here. But he does have a hunch, based on comments from Anthropic cofounder Daniela Amodei, that both companies had burned so much money they were “months from bankruptcy” and had “run out of options” other than to file for trillion-dollar IPOs.

In particular, OpenAI has long been losing more than a billion dollars a month — the cost of serving ChatGPT for free to hundreds of millions of people.

Financial bubbles built around technologies invariably end with an Emperor’s New Clothes moment. Eventually, enough people are pointing and laughing that courtiers can’t carry off the hype any longer.

That’s what happened to end the dotcom bubble in 2000. A business deal came along that was so ridiculous on its surface (the world’s largest media empire, snapped up by the guys who gave away dial-up internet via CDs?!) that markets couldn’t help but point and laugh. The vibe shifted. Overhyped, profitless dotcom companies began to look naked, and a stock collapse soon followed.

Human hiring and hallucinations

Times have changed, and the AI bubble is a hardier thing than its dotcom predecessor. It is built atop the one company currently making a fortune out of all this. NVIDIA has sold the picks and shovels to AI gold rush seekers for so many years now that they’ve started to seem invulnerable. Yet even Nvidia is learning lessons about the prohibitive growing cost of AI.

“The cost of compute is far beyond the costs of the employees,” one Nvidia executive told Axios in April. So even Nvidia is vulnerable to tokenmaxxing. And that’s why the hottest thing in AI these days is hiring humans, because they’re getting to be cheaper than AI — and are needed for quality control on AI’s output anyway.

Cognizant’s Kumar boasted about his AI company hiring 20,000 graduates last year, and more this year — a vibe shift if ever we’ve seen one.

So the jobspocalypse vibe has shifted. The tokens vibe has shifted. And the AI data center-building vibe has shifted, too — not just in terms of public and environmental opposition, but in the fact that there aren’t as many data centers under construction as we’d been led to expect. (Gadfly journalist Ed Zitron has done yeoman’s work here, scouring satellite photos of data center sites for signs of construction).

What’s left? Arguably, the only vibe that hasn’t shifted is the hallucination vibe, in that users still aren’t aware how often most AI models hallucinate. Google, for example, won’t say how often Gemini 3.5 Flash hallucinates, but a December Google study found that Gemini may only be accurate 68.8 to 83.8 percent of the time.

And hallucinations aren’t hard to find these days. The hallucination that OpenAI, Anthropic, and SpaceX are genuine trillion-dollar AI giants that deserve to be listed in top index funds despite being unprofitable (breaking news: as I wrote this, the S&P 500 officially opted out of that hallucination).

The hallucination that Nvidia will always remain on top, even as companies making up a majority of its business are developing their own AI chips (which is exactly why Michael Burry, the Big Short guy, continues to short the stock).

The hallucination that customers want AI in everything, when survey after survey says the opposite. The hallucination that AI content will dominate the future, when the generation that will take us there points and laughs at AI slop.

If these hallucinations fade from the fevered brains of Silicon Valley and Wall Street, the great AI vibe shift of 2026 will be complete.

Belkin’s UltraCharge 2-in-1 unseats our previous favorite, the BoostCharge Pro 2-in-1, which is still a great option. However, the latest model features Qi2 25W charging support to charge compatible devices even faster. It also has a folding design, allowing you to take it with you on the go, but it also works great as a permanent charger for your desk or nightstand. Over on the back, there’s a spot to place AirPods or any wireless earbuds with wireless charging. What’s also great is the spare USB-C port—you can pop in a cable to charge your Apple Watch at 5 watts (or another device); it just won’t charge very fast. (Belkin also has a 3-in-1 version of this model if you want a dedicated spot for the Apple Watch.) Best of all, Belkin includes a very compact 45-watt power adapter and a USB-C to USB-C cable, which is better than many other wireless chargers that cost more. iOttie Velox Duo for $33: This was our 2-in-1 pick for a while. The black-and-gold combo looks great, the magnet is strong, and there’s a weighted base. On the downside, it only charges iPhones at up to 7.5 watts. The permanently attached USB-C cable is a good length, but you do have to provide a wall adapter.

Noco X Grid XDS3 for $130: Well-made, with an eye-catching design, this 3-in-1 charger has a wide base that’s great for stability. It’s easy to remove your iPhone one-handed too, though it does have a relatively large footprint. It’s a bit bulky to travel with. You can stick your Qi2 phone to the pad in portrait or landscape, and the large bottom 5W pad is suitable for AirPods or even a second phone. It supports Apple Watch fast charging, but I didn’t like the way my Apple Watch tended to tilt to one side, and the charging pad positions are fixed (you can’t change the angle). You get the adapter, generous 6.5-foot braided USB-C cable, though, and plug adapters for different countries in the box.

Twelve South HiRise 3 Deluxe for $100: Twelve South’s 3-in-1 is an elegant wireless charger for the nightstand and gives the iPhone plenty of breathing room to rotate it to landscape mode and take advantage of StandBy. I like that the iPhone charger can swivel up and down. On the base is a fast charger for the Apple Watch that you can flip up, and the back has a spot for the AirPods or another wireless earbuds case. It’s nice and weighty and doesn’t slide around easily. It comes with a proprietary, removable charging cable, along with a charging brick, and international plug adapters for the US, UK, EU, and AU.

Anker Prime 3-in-1 Charging Station for $150: Sporting a tree design similar to our top pick from Belkin, the very latest Qi2 25W charging, fast Apple Watch charging, active cooling, and an interactive display, this is perhaps the most feature-packed 3-in-1 charger on the market. You can connect via Bluetooth and configure in the app to set wallpapers for the clock, schedule night mode to dim the display and turn off the cooling, and track your charging stats in a table. I’m just not sure it’s worth the premium. The finicky touch display is flat, so you have to sit up to see it, and it looks a bit cheap to me. It also feels superfluous when your iPhone already offers Standby mode.

Belkin BoostCharge Pro 2-in-1 Wireless Charging Dock with MagSafe for $112: This was our old 2-in-1 pick for iPhone and Apple Watch. I like the soft-touch finish, the pad on top can move through 70 degrees, and the shelf for your Apple Watch works with any strap. The braided USB-C cable is permanently attached, but you get a 30-watt wall charger in the box. I don’t remember having issues when I first tested, but using it again, I found the weight of the camera end of my iPhone 14 Pro caused it to slowly droop when in StandBy mode. It’s also kinda pricey.

Zens Office Charger Pro 3 for $85: I’m a fan of some of the interesting, out-of-the-box designs that Zens turns out, but this 3-in-1, while well-made and perfectly functional, doesn’t really stand out. It’s Qi2 certified (15W for iPhone, 5W for Apple Watch, 5W for AirPods), looks nice, and comes with the cable and charger, though it has a barrel port.

Lululook 3-in-1 Charging Station for $60: This is a perfectly competent 3-in-1 with Qi2 certification (15W for iPhone, 5W for Apple Watch, 5W for AirPods). It’s compact, you can angle the iPhone pad, and I like the gold finish of my review unit, but I prefer the Twelve South above, or the ESR if you don’t want to spend as much.

Belkin BoostCharge Pro 2-in-1 MagSafe-Compatible Wireless Charging Pad for $80: Qi2 support provides magnetic alignment for your iPhone and delivers 15 watts of charging, and there’s a spot for AirPods on this compact dual pad. A USB-C port allows you to charge something else, such as an Apple Watch, and you get a 5-foot USB-C cable and 30W power supply in the box. There is also a 3-in-1 pad ($110) that adds an Apple Watch charger on the right side.

Nomad Base One Max for $150: This was our 3-in-1 pad pick, but stock is running low, and it is being discontinued. The MagSafe charger keeps your iPhone out of sight and supports 15-watt charging, the Apple Watch charging puck sticks up for Nightstand mode, but it’s not a fast charger. I tried it with a loop band and a normal strap, and I could fit the AirPods Pro case in the spot behind the Apple Watch puck to recharge it just fine. The metal chassis is heavy and, paired with the anti-slip rubber base, this thing stays put. It comes with a 2-meter USB-C to USB-C cable, which is great if you want to plug it into your new iPhone 16 to juice it up faster, but I wish it came with a 30-watt charging adapter. Nomad sells this one that we’ve tested and like.

QDOS SnapStand 3-in-1 for £80: This clever design feels sturdy and comes flat, and you can fold out and angle a magnetic pad for charging your iPhone (StandBy mode works fine). There’s a pop-out Apple Watch charger around the back, and the base has a pad for your AirPods. You get a black USB-C cable, but you’ll need a charger (at least 25W). I like that it’s partly made from recycled materials, and it folds away very neatly, but the charging speeds are relatively slow (7.5 watts for the iPhone and 2.5 watts for the Apple Watch).

Anker MagGo Wireless Charging Station Stand for $90: This good-looking 3-in-1 charging tree is more affordable than our top pick, boasts Qi2 certification for 15-watt charging, and comes with a charger and cable. It just misses out on a place above because of the offset pad for the Apple Watch. It is slippery, so your Apple Watch may tilt, though I never had an issue with it not charging. Anker included stickers to combat this, but they are a fiddly and inelegant solution. It’s also a shame that the main pad for your iPhone is fixed, so you can’t adjust the angle. But these are minor gripes.

Anker 3-in-1 Cube with MagSafe for $90: This dinky, dense, 2.5-inch cube from Anker was our previous compact pick. It has a MagSafe pad on top (15 watts), and the top section hinges to a 60-degree angle, revealing a charging surface for your AirPods. The wee pop-out shelf on the side has a built-in Apple Watch fast charger. You get a 5-foot cable and a 30-watt charger in the box.

Satechi 3-in-1 Magnetic Wireless Charging Stand for $130: This compact, attractive 3-in-1 is a little smaller than the Belkin, so it doesn’t take up too much room, and it folds down compactly for travel. The aluminum build is attractive and sturdy (the iPhone mount is made of stainless steel). This is on reviews editor Adrienne So’s bedside table, and it recharges her Apple Watch Ultra 2 from 70 percent to full in around 30 minutes.

Case-Mate Fuel 3-in-1 Foldable for $50: Finished in a classy gray material, this 3-in-1 charges an iPhone in a case or any Qi smartphone, and it’s easy to fold flat and pack in a bag. It also has a built-in Apple Watch charger and a spot for AirPods. A cable and a 45-watt charger are included. I also tested the solid Case-Mate Fuel 4-in-1 ($150), which is quite good, but the unnecessary LEDs and Fuel logo put me off.

Best 4-in-1 Chargers

Zens 4-in-1 Modular Wireless Charger with iPad Charging Stand for $78: If you also own an iPad, why not a 4-in-1 charging station? Zens’ modular design has a main stand for your iPad, a MagSafe pad in front to float your iPhone, and a slight indentation to charge AirPods below. The Apple Watch charger is a separate section that attaches magnetically (on either side) and holds your Watch in horizontal Nightstand mode. It feels durable with a grippy, rubbery, flecked black finish made from recycled plastic. You get a 65-watt power adapter, power cable, and adapter plugs for the US, UK, and EU, which is quite handy. The main drawback with this is the large size, and you have to connect a cable to the USB-C port on the side to charge your iPad.

Journey Glyde 4-in-1 Portable Charger for $170: Former reviews editor Adrienne So almost voted for this multidevice MagSafe power bank to get a separate recommendation until she noticed the price. It’s a 10,000-mAh-capacity power bank that can charge up to four devices at a time and uses the Qi2 charging standard. However, our pick for this spot is so much cheaper, and the Glyde does not have a kickstand.

Scosche Baselynx 2.0 Modular Charging Station for $90: What if three spots are not enough? Scosche has you covered with this modular charging station. The basic stand is a 2-in-1 for your iPhone and AirPods, but you can add an Apple Watch charger, a toast rack-style vertical station with USB-C ports, or even an AC outlet with USB-C port, for a big combined charger ($220). The trouble is, it gets quite big and expensive as you add modules, and I don’t love the way it looks, but it’s a neat idea.

Avoid These Chargers

Not every charger will be a winner. Here are the ones we didn’t like.

Infinacore T3 Pro: The T3 Pro is a 3-in-1 stand that looks and feels very cheap, and it got warm when charging my iPhone. Its saving grace is that it is cheap. It also has Qi2 certification and works with StandBy mode. I also tried the fold-out triple pad Infinacore T3 Wireless Charging Station. Aside from the ugly plastic design, the weak magnets meant it did not work well when folded into the triangular configuration (this also blocks a pad).

Groov-e Asteria Wireless Charging Station with Alarm Clock: There’s a wee clock on the front of this charging station, which can accommodate an iPhone, AirPods on a pad around back, and an Apple Watch up top. It feels and looks very cheap, slides around a little too easily, the magnet is weak, and the clock seems redundant when you can set your iPhone in StandBy mode. I also tried the Triton 3-in-1 folding pad, and it was okay. They are very affordable, but you must provide your own power adapter.

Zike 3-in-1 Z557C Stand: This 3-in-1 charger works perfectly well, but there are several better options above. The iPhone pad allows for StandBy mode but is not adjustable. The Apple Watch pad flips up or can be laid flat, and there’s a spot for AirPods on the gray felt pad. It has a barrel port, so you must use the supplied power adapter. What I really dislike about this charger is the ridiculously bright, utterly pointless white LED on the front that stays on the entire time.

Alogic Matrix Ultimate: This 3-in-1 charger has a folding design, supports fast charging, includes a detachable 5,000-mAh power bank, and comes with a nice pouch, but it is kinda bulky, and the white finish picks up dust and smudges very easily. I have also had issues with other Alogic batteries failing and not supplying the stated capacity.

STM Goods ChargeTree Go: This charging tree station folds flat and can charge a trio of Apple gadgets. But there’s no quick-charge support, my Apple Watch kept sliding out of place during the night, and there’s no adapter included. It’s not cheap either.

A Quick Primer on MagSafe

Most of the wireless chargers in this guide are MagSafe wireless chargers or Qi2 certified. That means they take advantage of the magnets embedded in the back of the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone 14, iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 range. I cannot stress this enough: If you buy a case, ensure it is a MagSafe case. We have several third-party options in the linked case guides above. A normal iPhone case will weaken the pull of the magnets in the device and will not stick to MagSafe accessories well.

What’s the point of MagSafe? You don’t have to worry about misalignment with the wireless charger, meaning you won’t wake up to a dead iPhone. Technically, this perfect alignment enables chargers to deliver faster 15-watt charging. MagSafe is also available in the AirPods charging case (depending on your model). Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Pro with the wireless charging case will work with nearly all of the standard Qi wireless charging pads on these chargers (as will many third-party wireless earbuds), but if you have AirPods with MagSafe, then you can hook them up to the magnetic mounts as well. If you don’t have a MagSafe iPhone, then your device won’t be able to attach to these chargers, though we do have some recommendations for older iPhones (and the iPhone 16e).

Qi2 is the latest wireless charging standard, and Apple worked with the Wireless Power Consortium to develop it. Compared to the original Qi standard, it brings MagSafe-style magnetic charging, faster charging rates, and improved efficiency—but where MagSafe is an Apple technology designed for Apple products, any device can support Qi2. Apple updated the iPhone 12 and newer to support Qi2, so Qi2 should be a term you look for when shopping for a magnetic wireless charger. Qi2 Android phones are still thin on the ground right now—it’s officially available in Google’s Pixel 10 series—though Qi2 Ready phones add magnets using a compatible case. Expect more Qi2 Android phones soon. A Qi2 charger can charge your iPhone and any other Qi2 phones.

While Qi2 charging generally goes up to 15 watts, the Qi2.2 update, branded as Qi2 25W, can go up to 25 watts. But support for Qi2 25W is currently very limited, and includes the iPhone 17 range and the Pixel 10 Pro XL.

What Are StandBy Mode and Nightstand Mode?

You’ll see us bring up two specific modes throughout this guide: StandBy mode and Nightstand mode. What are they?

StandBy mode was introduced in iOS 17. When you place your iPhone on a charger in landscape orientation, it will turn the screen into a dock of sorts, showing the clock (with different designs you can choose from), photos from your library, or widgets. If you have an iPhone that supports an always-on screen, you can choose to have the display automatically turn off after some time when the iPhone isn’t in use or if the room is dark. Head to Settings > Standby to customize it.

Nightstand mode has long been around on the Apple Watch. Basically, when the watch is sitting upright and charging, the clockface will stay on so you can always tell the time. You can customize this on your Apple Watch by heading to Settings > General > Nightstand mode.

‘Among Us’ Showrunner Refused to Make an Adaptation Frozen in 2020-Era Meme Culture


Way back in 2023, CBS officially announced that its next animated series would be an adaptation of Innersloth’s smash-hit 2018 space murder mystery video game Among Us. Now, three years later, the show’s stacked cast of Hollywood actors called for an emergency meeting at Summer Game Fest, resulting in the surprise premiere of all 10 episodes on Paramount+.

Among Us, which is animated by Titmouse (Star Trek: Lower Decks), follows an assortment of monochromatic crewmates aboard a ship transporting junk across space. Hidden among them is an alien taking them out one by one. Their task is to put their collective noggins together and suss out which of them is the imposter before there are no crewmates left.

Ahead of Among Us‘ premiere, we spoke with showrunner Owen Dennis (Infinity Train) about how the series landed on its eclectic cast of actors, as well as his philosophy for adapting a video game into a television show nearly a decade after it skyrocketed into a global sensation.

Among Us has an absolutely stacked cast, spanning actors from video games, animated shows, and comedy. The cast includes Yvette Nicole Brown (Community) as Orange, Kimiko Glenn (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) as Cyan, Liv Hewson (Yellowjackets) as Black, Ashley Johnson (The Last Of Us) as Purple, Wayne Knight (Seinfeld) as Lime, Phil LaMarr (Samurai Jack) as Brown, Randall Park (Blue Eye Samurai) as Red, Dan Stevens (Solar Opposites) as Blue, Debra Wilson (Metal Gear Solid: Guns of the Patriots) as Yellow and Computer, Elijah Wood (Lord of the Rings) as Green, and Patton Oswalt (Goat) as White. Assembling the right group to breathe life into little jellybean-looking crewmates proved no small task for Dennis.

“One of the difficult things about casting Among Us is that all the characters kind of look the same. They have different outfits, but they look pretty similar, so [we needed to] make sure each voice definitely sounds like a different person,” Dennis said. “For us, there’s no mouth movement and no faces. Because of that, if you have a whole group of people and they’re all standing there and one of them is talking, you have to know which of them is actually talking without a mouth moving.”

He continued: “It was really important for us to make sure that we get actors who are very good and can express things using comedy, drama, or any direction that we need them to go. And also, their voice is unique enough that I know exactly which person is talking at any given moment.”

While the guidelines for what Among Us needed in assembling a crew of actors to bring its larger-than-life jellybean dudes to life were clear, Dennis admits that even then, it still proved a difficult hump to overcome, which is why he’s especially grateful they landed the stacked cast they did.

“When we landed on who we landed on, it all felt very natural and very good. I’m very happy with everyone we have,” he said.

With the show’s announcement coming three years after the game’s pandemic‑era peak, a cavalcade of internet memes burning their way into the internet’s collective conscience, and video game adaptations being a hit-or-miss venture for die-hards, it wouldn’t be out of line to guess that some fans might harbor a lingering concern that the CBS show might become a dated time capsule of that very specific moment in time. And the radio silence since 2023—followed by a shadow‑drop—likely spiked anxiety for fans who’d half‑forgotten the series was even in development until today’s surprise announcement.

When asked whether he or the writers’ room worried that Among Us‘ cultural moment had passed—and whether that possibility added pressure to make a show that was prescient rather than tethered to 2020—Dennis didn’t flinch, saying he didn’t let the noise affect him doing his job. That job, in his words, was to “make an animated show based on this video game that is supposed to be funny.” He then followed up that response with a remark that felt like the modus operandi that any showrunner adapting a video game would be wise to follow.

“Comedies are products of their time. All media is a product of its time. As much as people try to pretend that they’re making something timeless or can last forever, everything is a product of its time. You can’t escape that. But what can really make something very obviously a product of its time is a lot of referential humor. And references are sort of the lowest tier of joke because it’s not really a joke. It’s just you saying something and then someone else being like, ‘I know that thing.’ That’s not a joke. That’s just saying something that somebody knows.”

As such, Dennis made sure that Among Us didn’t lean on referential humor. Instead, the show endeavored to craft jokes that made sense for its characters, situation, and comedic tone, with an emphasis on “no big specific references or anything like that.” Plus, Dennis pointed out that trying to incorporate pop culture memes, especially in hand-drawn shows like Among Us, is a fool’s errand in the first place.

“Animation takes so long to make that if you tried to make a pop culture reference to something right now, by the time it came out, it’s dated as soon as you start doing it because it would be so many years after it came out,” he said.

“I want [Among Us] to stand on its own. I think it’s important anytime you’re adapting anything, it has to be something that fans of the thing are going to like, but also it needs to be able to stand completely on its own without having to know the previous works or the meta-narrative around the work or any of that sort of stuff. It has to be completely its own thing. If you can do that, then you can achieve something. But if you don’t do that, you end up with something that just feels weird, empty, and bizarre. I would hate to work on something like that.”

One Year On, Nintendo’s Switch 2 Impresses Me More Than Ever


A year ago, I scrambled to give on-the-fly thoughts about the Switch 2 as it arrived on shelves amid a ton of hype. The long-expected follow-up to one of the most successful game consoles ever felt like it should be a slam dunk.

My thought then was that the Switch 2 was the best gaming handheld, but not something any Nintendo Switch owner needed to buy. And that was always the paradox: For all that the Switch 2 does better than the Switch, it’s also the same proposition in many ways. It’s another Switch, but with better graphics and some new games that, somehow, didn’t include a new Zelda or 3D Mario.

In 2026, things already feel different. The economy has been brutal, driving prices of electronics and game consoles up constantly. PC gaming handhelds and Steam Decks are now climbing to prices that can reach $1,000 and higher. Years-old PlayStation 5 and Xbox consoles are more expensive too. Nintendo’s also driven its Switch hardware prices up, but not nearly as much. The Switch 2’s price is getting its first increase, up $50, to $500 on Sept. 1. A $500 price tag for a Nintendo console is a lot, but it’s now on the lower end of a price spectrum that climbs higher than I ever imagined. Console gaming is a luxury now.

That’s the thing: No one needs a game console, certainly, or ever did. PCs and phones and tablets can play tons of games. 

And yet, I deeply appreciate what the Switch 2 brings to the table right now. It’s clearer than ever that it can rival current PC gaming handhelds in graphics (although that may change soon), and I love that it includes a TV dock and modular controllers as part of the package. It’s an easy-to-like multifunction multiplayer-friendly thing, something that, somehow, competitors still haven’t found a way to mimic or beat.

The Switch 2’s first year of games had no Mario or Zelda, sure, but there were a lot of good ones. Donkey Kong Bananza wowed me, and so did Metroid Prime 4 (also playable on Switch, but it’s in its best form on Switch 2). Pokémon Pokopia came out of nowhere to be the next sort-of Animal Crossing. There were good weird wild cards, too, like Kirby Air Riders and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book.

The third-party game ports maybe impressed me even more, simply for showing that the Switch 2 can play big mainstream games. Resident Evil Requiem is really good. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle looks beautiful. There’s Cyberpunk 2077, and Pragmata, and while Madden wasn’t great, it was playable: I hadn’t been able to play Madden on the go like that in over a decade. 

There are drawbacks. The Switch 2 battery life is mediocre, lasting maybe a few hours depending on the game. I’ve come to accept it. I bring a battery pack, or redock. Also, the LCD screen is good, but not OLED vibrant. And, truthfully, the Joy-Con controls don’t feel comfy enough, and lack analog triggers. I prefer most other game handhelds and controllers.

And, there’s the price of Nintendo games, which generally trend higher than the same games on other platforms over time. That being said, Nintendo lowered the price of its own digital games going forward by $10 earlier this year, which helps a bit.

I’d still say you don’t “need” a Switch 2, but I now think it’s worth buying, especially before the price goes up in the fall to $500. Nintendo’s throwing in a free game right now for that same $500. Considering they’re also some of the Switch 2’s best games — Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokopia, Mario Kart World — and normally cost $70 and up, it’s a good deal. And in this topsy-turvy world, where I’d normally say wait for prices to drop, we may well see console prices keep going up in the year to come. 

I said a year ago that Nintendo would keep releasing Switch 1-compatible games for at least another year. Those days may be over now. Except for Rhythm Heaven, coming this July, Nintendo’s own games might increasingly be Switch 2 exclusives going forward. Indie developers may still release for both simply because there are over a hundred million Switch owners they can still reach, but Nintendo’s biggest and best games are going to be Switch 2-bound from now on.

The Switch 2 will never be the phenomenon the first Switch was, but it was never going to be. It’s an iteration. But it’s a key upgrade that powers the handheld up for big games to come, and it finally has enough great games of its own, even one year in, to justify the plunge.

But, also, you could just stick it out with the original Switch. Just keep expectations for new first-party Nintendo games low.



Steam Machine And Steam Frame Are Coming ‘This Summer’


The Steam Machine and Steam Frame are officially scheduled to land in summer 2026, Valve announced today in a blog post about something else entirely. There’s still no word on how much either bit of hardware will cost.

Valve made the big release-window reveal in a developer-focused blog post about the Steam Machine and Steam Frame being included in the Verified program, which launched with the Steam Deck and lets players know how well games will run on the handheld. The Verified program will do the same for the Steam Machine and Steam Frame hardware. For Steam Machine, the requirements for a Verified badge are nearly identical to the Steam Deck’s, Valve says.

As for the Steam Frame, Valve writes, “Like Steam Deck Verified, the Steam Frame Standalone Verified program focuses on the experience customers will have with the device out-of-the-box in standalone mode. The criteria are similar as well: the default graphics configuration needs to perform well, text and UI elements need to be clear and legible on the built-in display, and the default controller configuration needs to work well with the Steam Frame Controllers. The same test criteria apply to both VR titles and non-VR titles.”

There’s been plenty of speculation about the cost of Valve’s hardware since it announced the Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Steam Controller in November 2025. The ongoing global memory shortage has dramatically driven up prices of gaming consoles and PCs in 2026, and there’s no clear end in sight. Xbox, Sony and Valve raised prices in their existing hardware lines this year by hundreds of dollars each, with Valve upping the price of the Steam Deck by as much as $300. Nintendo has plans to follow suit with the Switch 2.

The Steam Controller hit the market on May 4 and it costs $99, which is a perfectly reasonable price for a well-crafted not-PC controller with touchpads. Of course, it only has kilobytes of RAM, and instead runs on cool haptic screams.

Valve rolled out a refresh that aims to organize the chaos of all those game ads with wider, higher-res images and more quick-look details at your fingertips. Wishlist and DLC sections have returned, and there’s a new Personal Calendar with even more game promos based on your play history. The Discovery Queue is now viewable in an overlay and infinite scroll has been engaged on the homepage.

AI fitness coach senses the muscle mechanics as you exercise and prevents rookie injuries


During the pandemic, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recorded a 48% spike in at-home exercise injuries. You might think that the culprit was bad equipment, but it was bad form. People had no coach around to correct it.  

Researchers at Drexel University and Michigan State University have built a prototype that addresses exactly that problem, in real time, using your phone camera, and there’s real potential for it to become a legitimate fitness app in future (via Tech Xplore).

What is the system called and how does it work?

The system, called BioCoach, was presented at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition in June 2026. It uses AI and live video (via a camera) to watch you exercise, analyze your body mechanics, and deliver specific, biomechanics-based corrections. 

To do this, the system processes video through two parallel streams: first uses a 3D convolutional neural network to capture your visual appearance and body movement patterns, while the second reconstructs your skeleton in three dimensions, analyzing your joint angles, range of motion, and the phase of the movement you’re in. 

Before offering you feedback, BioCoach identifies which joints are most involved in the exercise you’re performing. For instance, if you’re performing push ups, it will specifically monitor your shoulders, elbows, and wrists, offering personalized corrections. 

And I’m not talking about the generic “keep your back straight” comments that most fitness apps offer. The prototype goes above and beyond, offering anatomically precise guidance like “increase elbow flexion to 90 degrees at the bottom.” 

How did it perform against the competition?

The research team has trained BioCoach on Qualcomm’s Exercise Video Dataset, with over 200 re-annotated videos and over 2,400 new notes, to teach BioCoach to explain not just what to fix, but why it matters.

BioCoach has already been tested against similar programs from Nvidia, ByteDance, Alibaba, Salesforce, OpenAI, and MIT, among others. It outperformed Stream-VLM, which is a program from MIT and Nvidia, on text quality and judged correctness. It showed improvements in anatomy-specific feedback accuracy as well.

For now, the system is still a prototype, but the team is working on adding the ability to estimate joint reaction forces and muscle activation patterns, all from a video feed. 

The research was supported by the National Science Foundation, and this is why I strongly believe that BioCoach could be developed in a revolutionary smartphone app, which offers personalized corrective measures and encourages the right form and posture, preventing painful injuries and sustainable workout programs for people, which works both indoors and outdoors.

BioCoach is more advanced than most AI-based fitness coaches available

To give you some context, both Apple Fitness+ and Mirror offer video-based workout programs, but the feedback is pre-recorded and not dynamic like what BioCoach offers.

Peloton’s hardware offers a Movement-Tracking Camera that counts reps and flags issues, but it requires dedicated equipment like Bike+, Tread+, or Row+, and doesn’t explain the reasoning behind the form corrections and how they can benefit you.

Similarly, Google’s Health Coach and Samsung Health analyze biometric signals like heart rate and activity cadence to suggest certain improvements, but they can’t see you moving, and therefore, don’t provide any guidance for your form.

BioCoach, in contrast, is the first system to combine 3D skeletal reconstruction with a language model that explains the mechanical consequence of each correction. If it ever reaches your phone as a consumer app, which I truly hope it does, it could make genuinely expert coaching accessible to anyone with a camera.

iOS 27: All the Rumored App Features


Siri is getting a major overhaul in iOS 27, but Apple also has some big updates planned for apps like Camera, Photos, and Wallet. There are multiple new AI features in the works, plus some non-AI upgrades.

Camera

Apple is moving Visual Intelligence from the Camera Control button to the Camera app in ‌iOS 27‌. There will be a Siri mode that will be available alongside the existing Photo, Video, Portrait, and Panorama modes. When in ‌Siri‌ mode, the existing Camera app shutter button will feature the Apple Intelligence logo, letting users know the ‌Siri‌ features are available.

‌Siri‌ mode is a renaming of ‌Visual Intelligence‌, and it will make the feature more visible. Accessing ‌Visual Intelligence‌ in iOS 26 requires users to hold down the Camera Control button or assign the feature to the Action button, and many people may not even know it exists.

‌Visual Intelligence‌ can identify objects, plants, animals, art, books, and more, searching for whatever the user snaps on Google Image Search. In ‌iOS 27‌, ‌Siri‌ will be able to answer questions about what a user is looking at, providing information from the web.

Apple is adding new ‌Visual Intelligence‌ capabilities in ‌iOS 27‌, and they will be available through the Camera app ‌Siri‌ mode.

  • Nutrition – Users can scan nutrition labels on food packaging for calorie and macronutrient tracking using the Health app.
  • Contacts – ‌Visual Intelligence‌ will let users scan phone numbers and addresses on business cards and other print media, adding the information to the Contacts app.

Apple plans to make the Camera app more customizable in ‌iOS 27‌. iPhone users will be able to replace the top row of camera shortcuts with options of their choosing, selecting features like flash, exposure, timer, depth of field, photo styles, and resolution.

Camera controls, now labeled as widgets, can be placed at the top of the Camera interface in any order. Users can select widgets from a transparent widget tray that comes up from the bottom of the app and organizes widgets into categories like basic, manual, and settings.

The Camera app will have the same default layout that’s available now with quick tap buttons for flash, Live Photos, and Night Mode, but the customizable widget interface will be added as an advanced layout that will appeal to professional users.

iPhone users can currently tap on an icon at the top right of the Camera app to access all of the Camera controls, but Apple is moving that view to the right of the shutter button in ‌iOS 27‌.

The Camera app is also going to get new grid and level options that will join the existing features.

Photos

The ‌Photos‌ app will have an Apple Intelligence Tools section when editing an image with new Extend and Reframe options.

  • Extend – Extend generates additional image content beyond the original frame of the photo, filling in scenery when changing the crop of an image. This tool will support expanding the edges of an image with zoom gestures.
  • Reframe – When used with spatial photos, Reframe will let users change the perspective of an image after it’s captured.

Apple is also testing an AI photo editing feature that lets users request edits using natural language. Users would be able to tweak color, lighting, cropping, and other image parameters without having to use manual tools. The voice-based photo editing feature may not arrive in the first version of ‌iOS 27‌.

The ‌iOS 27‌ Shortcuts app will support using natural language to create a shortcut with AI. Users will be able to tell ‌Siri‌ what they want to accomplish with a multi-step shortcut, and ‌Siri‌ will generate it.

The Shortcuts app will open with a prompt that says “What do you want your shortcut to do?” with a text field to enter a description. Shortcuts that are created using AI are then automatically installed and immediately available for use.

Wallet

The Wallet app is getting a “Create a Pass” option so users can generate digital passes from scans of physical items like movie tickets, concert passes, and gym membership cards.

Users can tap on the “+” button in the Wallet app and then scan a QR code on a pass or ticket if one is available. If there is no QR code available, there will be an option to create a custom pass.

There are three pass types in Create a Pass, each with a different color. Apple is using purple for events, blue for memberships, and orange for other types of passes. Users can customize images, colors, style, and text on the digital passes.

Apple is also adding an AI bill-splitting feature that will work with Apple Cash. iPhone users will be able to take a photo of a receipt and generate Apple Cash payment requests for different people.

Image Playground and Genmoji

Apple is updating the Image Playground app. The interface for generating a new image has fewer controls and a “describe a change” option for editing images that are created. Previously created images are displayed in a grid with more rounded edges, and instead of a New Image button, there’s a “+” button.

Apple has also been testing new models that produce more lifelike images, so we could see new image generation capabilities in ‌iOS 27‌ with better image quality.

Genmoji is also getting an update so it will use fewer resources, causing less battery drain and fewer heat problems. ‌Genmoji‌ will be better quality with a new ‌Genmoji‌ model, and a Suggested ‌Genmoji‌ feature will bring up custom emoji ideas based on your media and text history.

Writing Tools

Apple is testing an expanded version of Writing Tools that will do more rewriting and text generation than the current version. There is a “Write with ‌Siri‌” toggle at the top of the keyboard, along with a “Help Me Write” option that comes up when ‌Siri‌ is activated while a text field is open.

Apple is going to add a dedicated AI grammar checker that will work alongside the current spell check. When writing in Messages, Mail, and other apps there will be a translucent menu that slides up from the bottom of the iPhone’s screen, and it will show suggested revisions next to the original written text.

Users can go through the suggestions and accept or reject them one by one, approve all of the changes at once, or ignore the changes.

Other Features

  • Wallpaper – There will be an option to generate custom wallpapers with the ‌Image Playground‌ app, with the feature built into the interface for selecting a new wallpaper.
  • Safari – Safari will get an updated start page with four tabs for switching between favorites, bookmarks, Reading List, and history.
  • Calendar – Rumors suggest the Calendar app will incorporate new AI features. ‌Siri‌ will also be able to draw on information in the app.
  • Health – With a new calorie scanning feature coming to the Camera app, calorie tracking will be more prominent in the Health app. Apple was also planning a Health+ subscription service, and while that’s been scaled back, there could be other AI health app changes.
  • Weather – The Weather app will have a new Conditions panel for switching between temperature, rain, and wind from the main interface, without the need to tap into a weather module.
  • AirPods settings – The AirPods interface in the Settings app will be simplified, with options featuring better organization. Major features like hearing health will be easier to find.
  • AirPlay Alternatives – Apple is adding a feature that will let users beam content to AirPlay alternatives like Google Cast. It could be limited to iPhone users in the EU because it is being implemented as a Digital Markets Act requirement.

System-Wide Design Changes

There are system-wide design changes coming in ‌iOS 27‌. The separate tab bar in apps like Apple Music, Podcasts, News, and Apple TV will be adjusted to combine search with the other navigation options. Apple separated search in many apps when introducing Liquid Glass, but it’s reverting to the original look.

When using the on-screen keyboard, there’s a new animation that shows the keys sliding up from the bottom of the iPhone interface, and Apple is adding redo and undo controls for easier customization of the Home Screen‘s icon and widget layouts.

Apple doesn’t plan to make major changes to the Liquid Glass aesthetic in ‌iOS 27‌, but the company is mulling a system-wide setting that would precisely adjust the look of the interface. In iOS 26.2, Apple added a slider that lets users adjust the opacity of Liquid Glass for the Lock Screen’s clock, and that setting could be expanded to the entire operating system.

Foldable iPhone Interface

The first foldable iPhone will be introduced in September. Rumors suggest that it will feature a 5.5-inch display when folded, and a 7.8-inch display when it’s opened up like a book.

An iPhone with a larger display will require major updates to iOS, and ‌iOS 27‌ will focus on building new interfaces and experiences made for a larger smartphone display.

The iPhone Fold will operate like a cross between an iPhone and an iPad, but it will run iOS, not iPadOS, and it won’t support ‌iPad‌ apps. When unfolded, the iPhone will have an iPad-like layout that supports multitasking with two apps side-by-side. Many of Apple’s iPhone apps will have sidebars on the left of the display, with Apple providing developers with tools to easily adapt their apps to the new layout.

Apple is using a wider design for the ‌iPhone Fold‌ than most foldable smartphone makers have used, and it is rumored to have an iPad-like 4:3 aspect ratio. When the iPhone is closed, it will have a standard iPhone layout that looks like the version of iOS we have now.

Apple is working on several new satellite features for the iPhone, and it’s possible some features could be introduced as soon as 2027.

Apple is prioritizing cleaning up the iOS code and removing anything that’s outdated, which could mean upgrading apps to improve performance and rewriting some existing features to be more efficient. The code updates could provide a more responsive, faster version of iOS.

Apple is also aiming for efficiency improvements that could translate into tangible battery life gains.

Launch Date

Apple will preview the new iOS features at its WWDC 2026 keynote event on June 8. Developers will get access the same day, and a public beta will likely be available in July. ‌iOS 27‌ will launch in September alongside new iPhones.
