Hackers injected malicious code into several Chrome extensions in recent attack

Hackers were reportedly able to modify several Chrome extensions with malicious code this month after gaining access to admin accounts through a phishing campaign. The cybersecurity company Cyberhaven shared in a this weekend that its Chrome extension was compromised on December 24 in an attack that appeared to be “targeting logins to specific social media advertising and AI platforms.” A few other extensions were hit as well, going back to mid-December, reported. According to Nudge Security’s , that includes ParrotTalks, Uvoice and VPNCity.

Cyberhaven notified its customers on December 26 in an email seen by , which advised them to revoke and rotate their passwords and other credentials. The company’s initial investigation of the incident found that the malicious extension targeted Facebook Ads users, with a goal of stealing data such as access tokens, user IDs and other account information, along with cookies. The code also added a mouse click listener. “After successfully sending all the data to the [Command & Control] server, the Facebook user ID is saved to browser storage,” Cyberhaven said in its analysis. “That user ID is then used in mouse click events to help attackers with 2FA on their side if that was needed.”

Cyberhaven said it first detected the breach on December 25 and was able to remove the malicious version of the extension within an hour. It’s since pushed out a clean version.

css – Disable hash generation in isolated stylesheet filename of razor class libraries in a Blazor Web App

I have a .NET 8 Blazor web app named Contoso which includes Razor class libraries LibA and LibB. LibA is in the same Visual Studio solution, and LibB is in another solution.

When I start the web app, it generates the stylesheet for all libraries on the fly. I can see that in the file https://localhost:0000/Contoso.styles.css that imports all stylesheets with the CSS from the components:

@import '_content/LibA/LibA.bundle.scp.css';
@import '_content/LibB/LibB.ca3u9u6gjt.bundle.scp.css';

All external libraries like LibB have a dynamic token ca3u9u6gjt in the stylesheet name. This changes every time the library is updated and has style changes.

How can I disable this behaviour and remove the hash?

We have to include the filenames directly because some have to be in a correct order. But I don’t want to change the filename after every update. This behaviour is only since Net8.

What did I try so far?

I added this to the .csproj file of the web app and of LibB, but it does not change anything:

<PropertyGroup>
    <CssScopedGenerateSourceHash>false</CssScopedGenerateSourceHash>
</PropertyGroup>

India’s mobile payments dilemma | TechCrunch

India’s payments regulator is set to decide as early as Monday whether to curb the dominance of Walmart’s PhonePe and Google in the nation’s fast-growing mobile payments market, a move that could reshape how its billion-plus population moves money.

The decision centers on UPI, or Unified Payments Interface, a network backed by more than 50 retail banks that has changed how Indians pay for everything from groceries to taxi rides. The platform processes over 13 billion transactions monthly, making it one of the world’s largest digital payment networks. It’s also, by far, the most popular way Indians transact online.

At issue is whether the National Payments Corporation of India, which reports to India’s central bank, will enforce a rule limiting companies to handling no more than 30% of all UPI transactions.

The rule, first proposed in 2020, would particularly affect Walmart-owned PhonePe, which handles 47.8% of all UPI payments, and Google Pay, which processes 37.1%.

The uncertainty has thrown a wrench into PhonePe’s plans to go public. The startup, valued at $12 billion and backed by Walmart, would be one of India’s most prominent technology IPOs. PhonePe’s co-founder and chief executive, Sameer Nigam, said in August that the startup cannot go public “if there is uncertainty on the regulatory side.”

“If you are buying a share at Rs 100 and you price it assuming we have 48-49% market share, then there is an uncertainty about whether it will come down to 30% and by when,” said Nigam (pictured above) at a fintech conference. “We are requesting them [the regulator], if they can find another way to at least solve whatever their concerns are or tell us what the list of concerns is.”

The issue also impacts the growth potential of numerous fintech startups that are attempting to make deeper inroads in digital payments. If the regulator imposes restrictions on PhonePe and Google Pay’s ability to onboard new users or puts a check on how many transactions they process, many other startups stand to gain grounds.

The regulator is inclined to delay enforcing the cap again or may increase the limit to more than 40%, people briefed on the situation told TechCrunch. The agency has already pushed back the deadline several times, from January 2021 to 2023, and then to 2025, as it struggled with implementation. It has held talks with many stakeholders as recently as last week over the decision.

Enforcing a limitation on the market share will impact the consumer experience, some of the people said.

The situation highlights India’s efforts to balance technological innovation with market competition. UPI has been a cornerstone of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push to digitize India’s economy and reduce its reliance on cash. The system allows instant transfers between bank accounts using simple identifiers like phone numbers, making it more accessible than traditional banking services.

A market share cap would mark one of India’s most significant interventions in its technology sector, which has attracted massive investments from global companies like Walmart, Google, and Meta. These companies view India, with its young, increasingly digital population, as a crucial growth market.

Best Internet Providers in Waterbury, Connecticut

What is the best internet provider in Waterbury?

CNET’s top internet recommendation for Waterbury is Frontier, a DSL and fiber provider that combines high-speed broadband with straightforward service at competitive prices. While Frontier doesn’t have the area’s widest coverage — that title goes to Xfinity — it still serves approximately 69% of households in the city, according to FCC data.

That said, if only Frontier’s DSL network is available at your address, you may find better speeds and pricing with alternatives like Xfinity or T-Mobile Home Internet.

For those seeking both speed and value, Xfinity offers plans with download speeds of up to 300Mbps for just $35 per month, including unlimited data at no extra cost. If speed is your top priority, Frontier’s 7-gigabit fiber connection stands out as the fastest option in this Connecticut city.

What’s a good internet speed?

Most internet connection plans can now handle basic productivity and communication tasks. If you’re looking for an internet plan that can accommodate videoconferencing, streaming video, or gaming, you’ll have a better experience with a more robust connection. Here’s an overview of the recommended minimum download speeds for various applications, according to the FCC. Note that these are only guidelines — and that internet speed, service and performance vary by connection type, provider and address.

For more information, refer to our guide to how much internet speed you really need.

  • 0 to 5Mbps allows you to tackle the basics: browsing the internet, sending and receiving email, streaming low-quality video.
  • 5 to 40Mbps gives you higher-quality video streaming and videoconferencing.
  • 40 to 100Mbps should give one user sufficient bandwidth to satisfy the demands of modern telecommuting, video streaming and online gaming.
  • 100 to 500Mbps allows one to two users to simultaneously engage in high-bandwidth activities like videoconferencing, streaming and online gaming.
  • 500 to 1,000Mbps allows three or more users to engage in high-bandwidth activities at the same time.

How CNET chose the best internet providers in Waterbury

Internet service providers are numerous and regional. Unlike with the latest smartphone, laptop, router or kitchen tool, it’s impractical to personally test every ISP in a given city. So what’s our approach? We start by researching the pricing, availability and speed information, drawing on our own historical ISP data, the provider sites and mapping information at FCC.gov.

But it doesn’t end there. We go to the FCC’s website to check our data and ensure we consider every ISP that provides service in an area. We also input local addresses on provider websites to find specific options for residents. We look at sources, including the American Customer Satisfaction Index and J.D. Power, to evaluate how happy customers are with an ISP’s service. ISP plans and prices are subject to frequent changes; all information provided is accurate as of publication.

Once we have this localized information, we ask three main questions:

  1. Does the provider offer access to reasonably fast internet speeds?
  2. Do customers get decent value for what they’re paying?
  3. Are customers happy with their service?

Though the answers to those questions are often layered and complex, the providers who come closest to “yes” on all three are the ones we recommend. When selecting the cheapest internet service, we look for the plans with the lowest monthly fee, though we also factor in things like price increases, equipment fees and contracts. Choosing the fastest internet service is relatively straightforward. We look at advertised upload and download speeds and also consider real-world speed data from sources like Ookla and FCC reports. (Ookla is owned by the same parent company as CNET, Ziff Davis.)

To explore our process in more depth, visit our how we test ISPs page.

PC Gamer Hardware Awards: The best microphone of 2024

I’m forever espousing the benefits of a good microphone. It’s one of those things that you don’t think you need until you try one for yourself, or hear an awful one over voice chat and realise what a terrible curse bad audio is on the people that have to listen to you on the daily.

Many microphones have passed our desks this year, and many have failed to meet the mark. But a precious few have stood head and shoulders above the rest, so we’ve gathered together the top three, thrown them into the ring, and let them bash their little pop-filters against each other until a clear winner remains.

Emio – The Smiling Man’s Final Chapters Are A Masterclass In Suspense

As surprising as it was to see Nintendo drop an uncharacteristically creepy teaser earlier this year about a masked man known as “Emio,” few could have expected it would be related to a brand-new entry in the company’s long-dormant Famicom Detective Club series. What’s less surprising is just how riveting the game turned out to be, an expertly paced thriller whose setting, music, and atmosphere masterfully crescendo into one of the most suspenseful denouements Nintendo has ever conjured.

Spoilers for Emio – The Smiling Man follow.

The lead-up to this climax, however, is anything but straightforward. Like the previous two games in the Famicom Detective Club series, Emio – The Smiling Man is a slow-burn detective story–a densely plotted mystery that unravels methodically over the course of roughly a dozen hours. Picking up a few years after the events of The Missing Heir, the Utsugi Detective Agency is enlisted to aid police detectives Junko Kuze and Daisuke Kamihara in investigating the death of a teenage boy, who was discovered wearing a paper bag unsettlingly scrawled with a smiley face.

What’s most shocking about this scene, however, is how it eerily parallels a series of unsolved murders that occurred in town 18 years ago, leading you and the police to suspect the same culprit is responsible. The only other lead to go off of is a disturbing urban legend of a serial killer known as Emio, the “Smiling Man”–a paper-bag wearing individual who approaches crying girls at night and strangles them, placing a smiley face paper bag over their heads afterward to leave them with an everlasting smile.

With this tenuous connection as your starting point, you embark on a winding investigation, navigating a deliberately laid breadcrumb trail of clues, misdirections, and dead ends. But for all the progress you make, the answer always seems just beyond reach. Every new lead you uncover only raises further questions, and it often feels as if you are no closer to discovering the connection between the cases, let alone the culprit’s identity and whereabouts.

That is, until you reach the penultimate chapter. Following a tense car ride with Detective Kamihara, you return to the city center to canvass the locals for any more potential leads you can discover. After a largely fruitless search around town, you eventually meet two unassuming construction workers, who suddenly turn your understanding of the case upside down.

During the ensuing conversation, you present to the workers two police sketches: one of a man named Minoru Tsuzuki, a person of interest from the serial murders who has been missing for 18 years; and one of Makoto Kuze, Detective Kuze’s missing brother who also disappeared around the time of the serial murders. The construction workers claim to have just recently worked with a man named Minoru Tsuzuki, but they don’t recognize the Minoru depicted in the police sketch. Rather, they both identify the sketch of Makoto as Minoru.

Even more curiously, the construction workers recall driving Minoru home on the last day of their project. The background music suddenly falls silent as the two recount dropping Minoru off in the middle of nowhere at the foot of the mountains, then watching the strange man as he wordlessly waded through the overgrowth and up the mountainside. It’s a confounding twist, made all the more chilling by the ominous track that accompanies their testimony, reinforcing the feeling that you’re on the precipice of some horrible revelation.

The tension is only amplified as you delve into the final chapter, which begins with your arrival at Yamanba Pass, the eerie stretch of road in the middle of the mountains where Minoru was last seen. The atmosphere is immediately unnerving. The overgrown brush and dilapidated pavement make it apparent no one has been through the area in quite some time, and the only audible sound is the faint, haunting murmur of the wind blowing through the trees. With sunset quickly approaching and no other path forward, you have little choice but to enter the woods and continue pursuing your new lead.

The ascent is unbearably foreboding. As dusk gradually creeps in and you steadily make your way up the mountainside, scanning the thick foliage for any clues that may lead you in the right direction, you come upon multiple forks in the trail, most of which either double back to a previous area or lead off to a dead end. It’s tense and disorienting, and the unsettling background music that plays as you negotiate this seemingly endless forest only accentuates the feeling of unease.

But what really lends this scene an overwhelming sense of dread is the way the game deftly manipulates player expectations. Though you as the audience are aware that several characters have had brushes with the Smiling Man at different points in the story, you as the protagonist have yet to meet him yourself–which must mean your inevitable face-to-face encounter with the elusive killer could happen at any given moment while you’re desperately navigating this dark, remote mountain.

It’s a palpably tense experience, and a testament to how masterfully executed the game’s closing chapters are. And that’s to say nothing of the wrenching epilogue that unlocks after the credits roll, which ties up every loose end and lingering question in gutting fashion. Though it may not have garnered as much mainstream attention as some other releases, these climactic moments solidify Emio – The Smiling Man as one of the year’s most poignant titles, a genuinely tender, funny, and heartrending tale that will stay with me for years to come.

Healthcare organizations in the US may soon get a cybersecurity overhaul

A set of new requirements proposed by the US Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Office for Civil Rights could bring healthcare organizations up to par with modern cybersecurity practices. The proposal, posted to the Federal Register on Friday, includes requirements for multifactor authentication, data encryption and routine scans for vulnerabilities and breaches. It would also make the use of anti-malware protection mandatory for systems handling sensitive information, along with network segmentation, the implementation of separate controls for data backup and recovery, and yearly audits to check for compliance.

HHS also shared a fact sheet outlining the proposal, which would update the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Security Rule. A 60-day public comment period is expected to open soon. In a press briefing, US deputy national security advisor for cyber and emerging technology Anne Neuberger said the plan would cost $9 billion in the first year to execute, and $6 billion over the subsequent four years, Reuters reports. The proposal comes in light of a marked increase in large-scale breaches over the past few years. Just this year, the healthcare industry was hit by multiple major cyberattacks, including hacks into Ascension and UnitedHealth systems that caused disruptions at hospitals, doctors’ offices and pharmacies.

“From 2018-2023, reports of large breaches increased by 102 percent, and the number of individuals affected by such breaches increased by 1002 percent, primarily because of increases in hacking and ransomware attacks,” according to the Office for Civil Rights. “In 2023, over 167 million individuals were affected by large breaches — a new record.”

How Firms Can Create Engaging Institutional Interior Design 3D Renderings

This post covers how design firms can create engaging institutional interior design 3D renderings. Just a few words here and there won’t be enough to describe 3D rendering services and its effects on the interior design industry. The real world and the virtual world have now come together to offer a clearer peek into the space before the construction even begins.

As far as institutional settings, including offices, hospitals, schools, and the likes are concerned where aesthetics and function should always join forces, 3D renderings have an even more critical role to play in conjuring images of the final design.

:rocket: Table of contents

3D renderings and their role in institutional interior design

Institutional settings are expected to have a great ambiance without losing their practical touch. Interior design should be able to address different needs, then, while meeting the standards for efficiency and safety. It’s simple: school areas must be conducive to learning while being cozy. Hospitals, in contrast, must offer a sense of comfort without jeopardizing the safety of patients and employees. Check out below to know the key aspects where 3D renderings become priceless tools:

RELATED: 5 Business tips for creating photorealistic interior renderings for your company

Client and stakeholder communication

Let’s face it: not all clients can understand technical drawings, even more so by those who aren’t even familiar with them in the first place. 3D architectural rendering firms can offer clearer communication to ensure that all the people involved are always on the same page about the final look of the design.

Personalized choices just for you

Institutional spaces must have interiors with a customized look and feel to cater to certain functional requirements. 3D renders should give designers the chance to play around with different furniture setups, color combos, and layouts to balance out function and form to perfection.

Visualization opportunities

3D renderings can also photorealistically depict spaces. This isn’t something you can expect from flat traditional 2D drawings or blueprints. As a result, it wouldn’t take much for stakeholders to conjure images of the design with suitable spatial proportions, textures, and lighting fixtures.

Institutional interior design essentials

As far as the world of interior design services is concerned, the guidance and expertise of the experts are necessary when developing the design of the interiors of institutional spaces. It requires various elements that need cautious deliberation.

3d interior rendering services

The whole thing should meet the terms of the local regulations and rules to create a more positive learning environment. It also involves ensuring that all safety protocols are adhered to. These elements must be synchronized to give the institution its distinct character and personality. Here are some of the essentials that any institutional interior designer should never do without:

Creativity

It’s always a creative experience to learn and teach things. It means institutions where learning and teaching take place should never be monotonous, dull, and boring.  You can throw in some significant visual elements to the interior design of the institutional space to create an enticing environment for all the people in it.

You can make it happen by doing a couple of things or so. For educational institutions, the 3D interior rendering expert can add bright colors to the play areas. This works great for younger students. Interactive displays can also be added to reading nooks like libraries to keep students interested. The design of the campus’ on-site bookstore should be inviting and warm, too. The cafeteria must have enticing shelf displays and menus that will whet the appetite.

Exceptionality

Educational institutions follow some ideologies and principles of their own. Designers can help you give this distinct personality to your institution through the process of comprehensive collaboration and discussion. It’s where 3D logo design services and branding enter the picture. Make sure that these visual elements are used and incorporated wherever possible. While you’re busy creating a unique identity for the institution, see to it that you don’t put the functional aspects to the side.

Ample lighting

Natural lighting should always be sufficient in institutions to promote learning. Continuing from the example above, classrooms can be designed with large windows. Everyone is aware of the positive effect of natural light on people’s cognitive and mental abilities and in turn, this will boost their ability to grasp and learn things.

Artificial light sources should also be enough for gloomy and dark days when the sun might not be in its full force. Ample lighting in classrooms is mandatory to make sure that teachers and students alike maintain healthy vision and eyesight.

Functional layouts

Planning layouts is huge as far as institutional interior design and floor plan renderers are concerned. Make functionality your priority and base your layout on it. For primary or elementary schools, your main focus should be the corridors and passages since these areas will be crowded with students and faculty members throughout the day. Another important factor here is observing the correct distance between the student benches and the whiteboards or blackboards, whichever is applicable.

Meanwhile, practical workshops and laboratories occupy the biggest part of the layout of vocational colleges. It means that you need to set up the rest of the elements around them. In this case, start by evaluating the functionality and then work with the designers to create a layout that caters to these requirements.

Cosy furniture

Comfort should always be your foremost consideration when looking for furniture pieces to put in educational institutions. The safety and well-being of teachers and students should always be the priority here. Comfy pieces of furniture will ensure that students won’t worry about anything else and just focus on learning alone. You can talk to your interior designers and ask if they can help you look for quality furniture that won’t cost you an arm and a leg.

Adherence to local regulations

Institutional buildings must also adhere to local regulations and laws. Before you start on your project, never forget to verify whether or not the premises comply with security and safety rules for the benefit of all building occupants and visitors.

All types of institutions, from schools to universities, hospitals, libraries, and other commercial setups, meet fire safety protocols. This also applies to drainage and plumbing systems, and electrical wiring, sockets, and switches. Failure to comply in these areas may lead to some serious consequences later on, whether it is on the reputation of the institution or its monetary expenses.

3D rendering strategies for institutional interior design

To produce informative and compelling institutional interior design 3D renderings, you should always observe the combination of technical skills, attention to detail, and creative flair. The following strategies can help you achieve exactly just that:

Safety and accessibility

Safety and accessibility are the topmost priorities in any institutional setting. 3D architectural visualization designers should create 3D renders that reflect adherence to all the relevant standards and codes to make sure that they are always safe and accessible from top to bottom and vice versa. These two primary aspects are a must in any institutional design. Settings such as public buildings and hospitals should have room for and cater to different groups of people. 3D renderings of institutional interior designs must clearly show these.

They should also take into consideration the local regulations and requirements. The renders must also have elements like spacious corridors, non-slip surfaces, ramps, and elevators. These features are an assurance that the space adheres to all accessibility and legal safety requirements.

In-depth precision

Every detail should also go through careful scrutiny. All aspects and facets of the render should be accurate and in line with the requirements of the project, from the lighting fixtures to the placement of furniture pieces.

Contextual elements

Contextual elements including branding elements such as mission statements or logos, signage, and landscaping, must be included to give your renders enough context and depth.

Cultural sensitivity

It’s common for institutional spaces to turn into cultural hubs that represent and serve different communities. This means that the 3D renderings of institutional interior designs must be a reflection of this diversity. The design itself must be sensitive enough to different cultures. You can use historical references, showcase works of art, and reference other similar design elements to achieve just that. When your design feels and looks more inclusive, you can make it feel more welcoming and relatable to different groups.

Human touch

You can give your 3D renderings a better sense of scale if you add some human figures here and there. This way, stakeholders and clients can easily imagine how the space and the people in it will interact with each other, letting them evaluate its functionality.

Identity and branding

The presentations of institutional and commercial spaces have almost the same requirements. Both should align with the unique brand identity of the organization. 3D renderings from 3D architectural animation services must depict how the design will integrate with the color schemes, logs, and other similar branding elements of the institution. It will further strengthen the brand for the audience to have a stronger visual connection with it. It can also help convey the values of the institution and solidify its image in the eyes of the general public.

Interactive elements

Virtual reality or VR experiences and interactive 3D models can also be used to make the 3D renders look and feel more immersive. This will help the clients explore and navigate the space from various angles so they can make better decisions.

Positive user experience

3D renderings of institutional interior designs must also exude a welcoming environment. Furniture pieces should be arranged comfortably, color schemes must be pleasing to the eyes, and layouts should allow easy navigation.

This mini documentary about the coldest town on Earth is stunning

Kiun B’s YouTube videos are mini documentaries about her life and the lives of the 800 people who live in her hometown of Yakutia, Siberia, aka the coldest town on Earth. The creator, who narrates the videos, says she and her community are native to the region. The enchanting mini docs showcase their customs, culture, and day-to-day life — which looks quite different when it’s 95 degrees Fahrenheit below zero outside.

This installment follows a family through their day, including waking up before the sun to feed the furnace fire and melt ice for drinking water. They don layers and layers of insulated clothing just to walk short distances outside — or long distances, in the case of the schoolkids who bundle up each day to commute to class. The stories are humbling, especially as you sit in your cozy home and watch the Yakutians do such hard, backbreaking work just to keep their homes running through the winter. (Don’t worry, it gets warm in the summer — and there’s a video about that, too!)

This documentary has that easy, informative Nat Geo vibe that makes it an unchallenging watch with family over the holidays, for instance. But the creator and narrator being from Yakutia herself gives it a more grounded tone and, of course, better insight about life in the town.

While it’s never a good idea to chalk an entire culture up to one YouTube channel, I didn’t know anything about Yakutia or the contemporary lives of the Indigenous people of Siberia before watching these videos, and they exposed me to something I might’ve never learned about otherwise. And who hasn’t wondered how the people who live in the harsh climate of Siberia make it all work? To have that question answered — and to learn how those people thrive in a cold I can’t even conceive of — is a great way to spend 20 minutes.
